This is LITERALLY the only video on UA-cam to explain the natural vibrato and fake vibrato differences. I’m guilty of doing the fake vibrato lol because that’s how I always thought to do it. But nobody explains any of this.

I've been a deathcore vocalist for about 15 years, and I occasionally did clean singing. Everyone told me I had a very nice singing voice but I never really played with it much until recently. Deathcore vocals are very difficult to learn, and I thought I had a pretty excellent command over my voice until I started trying to ACTUALLY sing. I have to relearn fundamentals lol.
This was a great tutorial, easy to understand and emulate. Much appreciated. I'm working on a Sleep Token cover for "Are you really okay" and their vocalist is a master with Vibrato so this is a great start.

THAT MAKES SO MUCH SENSE I always have vibrato when I am running out of breath but I can't seem to do it otherwise. With this video along with the Power to Sing videos I finally understand what vibrato really is, how it should feel, and how to get it. Thank you!

After a few of your videos and doing the exercises, I was finally able to control my vibrato - for the first time! I have a great sounding vibrato but could never control when I produced it. I suddenly had an Aha! moment and nearly cried. Thank you so much!! I have a lot of practice ahead of me but I at least know what control feels like and will keep replicating to master it. 😊❤

I think I found it! My natural vibrato! The "voice flying away from you' image and the constant reminder not to fall into 'gunshot vibrato' really helped! Im new to singing, so for now it feels like a baby chicken I need to nourish, but hearing it for the first time was amazing. Thank you so much! :D

I never knew what vibrato was until a woman at church told me I had a beautiful vibrato. I finally decided to look this up to see what it is. Now I will work on contolling it and being more relaxed more of the time. Thank you!

If I may add a little thing of mine (for others still struggling despite these wonderful tips in this video) i discovered while achieving a nice controlled vibrato:
    It's to :
    A) start with a metronome and think vibrato as bi tonal A B A B A B and increase speed to at least 130 (150 ideally). It's to train the "muscles" to that movement and get some flexibility.
    B) to stop thinking about "bitonal" vibrato and more of a main note to hold and a "shadow" note . Visualize mentally a rubber band (that helped me).
Music theory and solfege days are too far for me to remember (lol )but I think the vibrato is like less than a half tone if i'm not mistaken or maybe it's half tone idk xD. But thinking that way helped achieve a more natural vibrato, more controlled and stable not sounding like a two tones alamr siren (pi po pi po pi po)
And obviously all the standard tips for singing: relax, phrasing etc.
Songs to train: all the songs from the great american songbooks. "Somewhere over the rainbow", the autumn leaves, as time goes by. (slightly) Excessive use of vibratos back then, but perfect opportunity to train it and enjoy your journey to getting the vibrato :D
PS: i love your expression "stuck in straight tone" I laughed so much you really made my day XD

I couldn't say I have the time to attend a class, but my job allows me to hear your lessons through headphones. I do the exercises in my car in-between accounts, but you are the first person in a long time that has brought truly valuable lessons to me. Thank you, sincerely.

I'm really grateful I accidentally encounter your channel. I've been watching a lot of vocal exercises and advices from different coaches here in UA-cam for years now but I'm still stuck. Fortunately, I found yours and you gave me a different perspective of vocals and not just doing random exercises and said to magically upgrade your voice. Your videos are fun and informative, I always enjoy watching your videos. Though I still have a long way to go but I can see some improvements in my vocals thanks to "Victoria's, Victorious Vocal Tips" (I always go along with these lines every time I watched your videos😅)

Two things that I discovered while learning vibrato (from you of course 😉) I had to record myself and listen for it, using my phones voice recorder app. When I got in my head during a song, I simply walked from my kitchen to my living room while singing. This helped me get out of my own way. Once I accomplished learning how to hear my vibrato and releasing the tension by walking to get out of my way, I was able to get better and better. Now I can stand and sing normally. It wasn't an easy task. I listened to many hours of lessons from many different teachers. When I stumbled across your page. The video of you explaining how to do sirens and sounding like a ghost 👻 that's when it all came together ❤ Thanks Victoria for such a fantastic 📹

I just ❤ you. Vibrato is elusive for me. I’ve been praying for a beautiful voice since I was s kid now I’m 70. By praying I mean litterally asking ‘please let me open my mouth when it counts, in front of and with other people or when I just want to sing out loud’ but I wonder if my anatomy isn’t built the way it needs to be when I don’t sing with vibrato with ease. I can get it sometimes. I appreciate your mention of lightening up. I sang acoustic bluegrass for many years & belted to be heard over the loud instruments like banjo. I’ve taken voice lessons countless times since the age of 15. I always quit because I give up. I think you are correct when you say alot of it is mental. I will keep praying and trying and thank you for these lessons ..now I couldn’t afford to pay an instructor. Im in choir rehearsals right now it’s only for 6 weeks. There are many trained voices in choir. They’re phenomenal. Maybe one of your videos you would sing a popular song not classical or operatic. yourvoice is flawless. I just wonder if you ever sing popular songs from any era. I’d love to hear you. I tried to sing a few patsy cline songs. I couldn’t do them any Justice because of the elusive vibrato.

Hello Ms. Victoria, I don't want to waste your time, so other than to say, I love you and your an inspiration, I'll get to the point... I'm a 39 y/o autistic man, and I've been broke, and very depressed sometimes. Discovering your videos has helped me rediscover the joy I've always gotten from singing. This has lifted me out of a very dark place, and I could never hope to thank you enough. I was wondering if you knew maybe a student or something that would be willing to give me supplementary vocal lessons for a small tip? It's for a good, very specific reason: I'm autistic and have dyspraxia, and intero and propreocetion issues and need to ask very specific questions in order to make my larynx do what it needs to do. I promise you, if anyone wants I will explain more, but basically, I get my body to move and do things and a different way, using a different part of the brain etc. So, what may relax almost everyone, may actually make me more tense. Your references are perfect for neurotypical people, but theres just no way you could anticipate a student like me. lol. My dad has been a guitar teacher, my stepmother a singer for 52 and 30 years respectively and they would not hesitate to tell you the same. A year from now, I will be in a much better financial position to actually afford to pay to hire someone as amazing as you. I come from a family of musicians, my father, 78 and still a rock musician in a band, and still a guitar teacher. He used to be in vegas show bands in the 70s among many other things as you can imagine. He met my mother on tour, she was the bartender at the venue. lol. Personally, I go for the drummer, or base, but since gay drummers are at a premium, I'll even flirt with the sound guy for all I care. lol. Sorry if this wasn't the appropriate place to write this comment, but those who care to read it, will surely feel the sincerity behind these words of gratitude. I've watched most of the people I love die over the past 5 years, a few old, most young. I know how important it is to tell people how they have impacted your life, and the positive effect it's had. At the risk of it not being read by the right person, and being read by the wrong people, not having a typical sense of social norms. I really don't give a fuck. If anyone gives me shit for expressing love to another human, in this day and age and this social climate, then I especially love them for their passion and courage to give me shit. Have you seen what's on cable television lately? If you flip through the channels, and realize that people paid money for those programs....theres gotta be at least one person that appreciates my eccentric, over self-expressive comments. Much love to you Victoria, and to everyone who read this far...you deserve recognition for your courage and bravery for listening to a gay autistic nerd ramble on UA-cam. I think you've more than done your good deed for the day. Much love! Peace Now!

I meant you don’t put it on, a former teacher told me it comes naturally when the voice is free. A lot of bad information out there, more people need to hear what you are saying.

Thanks for another helpful video, Victoria! When aiming for the feeling of release, is the larynx movement during vibrato completely involuntary? Or are you slightly guiding / initiating the movement along with the airflow? I've always been confused about that part. Thanks!

      @Victoria-Victorious  2 роки тому +2

If you are working hard at moving the larynx, then that is not going to help you "release" or "relax" at the vocal folds. However, the "wild & crazy" exercises, plus the exercises with the fast moving, up & down pitches do help to free things up without excess manipulation.

My wife and I been watching your videos for 2 months now. You are truly a great voice instructor. My question is, can someone over 40 years old can still learn to do a vibrato even just a little bit? Thank you for your great videos. We both subscribed already. You are fun to watch.

This is one of the best videos teaching vibrato, Ive always struggled with vibrato, usually when i sing with vibrato it sounds half natural half forced and mt throat would get sore everytime I sing vibrato, and this video has really helped me open up my vocal chords more, but I am still cant fully do vibrato and still get a sore throat and I have a singing audition coming up, do you have any advice?

If you get a sore throat, you may be going into the squeeze. See my playlist on Thoat Tension.

I suspect that if I had some professional training I'd be really good. I'm self taught and there are these rare moments where I tap into something I simply can't explain and I can sing pretty well. Then other times I sound questionable. Still discovering and finding my voice. Vibrato is one of the few things I can do very well and I don't believe it's the fake kind

I do a "strum" motion with my hands to consciously signal the timing of the release for vibrato.

Although I have a good, natural and controllable vibrato, I'm not a singer or even a musician so pardon if this is a dumb question but what do you think of singers who have a natural tremolo rather than vibrato? It doesn't sound at all like the "fake vibrato" that you demonstrated and is difficult to discern from a vibrato other than it being a variation in volume rather than being a variation in frequency. Professional (non opera, of course) singers who have/use it include Jane Olivor and Freddy Fender among many others with the most obvious being Aaron Nevill as his is slow and stands out.

      2. submitting a video for evaluation: www.healthyvocaltechnique.com/product/video-review-of-your-singing/

I do have beautiful vibrato when singing while simultaneously holding a jackhammer. I never run of air too with the air compressor. On a serious note, mine just comes and goes it seems on some songs it comes some doesn't. I wish I could control it. I will have to be disciplined and do the note switching to help release tension. So far it does work but it may one day.
