  • Before Star Trek: Picard Season 3 premieres on Paramount+ on February 16, Collider’s Steve Weintraub spoke with the showrunner, Terry Matalas, about his vision for the final season of this chapter of Star Trek. During his interview, Matalas discusses avoiding “over-saturating” the universe and fanservice vs just existing within said universe. He teases familiar characters and locations for fans, promises more to come, as well as a satisfying conclusion to Star Trek: The Next Generation. He also reveals how he included a reference to the Transformers movie from 1986 in the season...
Though the first two seasons of Picard disappointed some fans, Patrick Stewart returns as the titular Jean-Luc Picard in what’s being called a “love letter” to Star Trek. Season 3 sees the return of Next Generation’s Gates McFadden as Dr. Beverly Crusher, Jonathan Frakes as Will Riker, Marina Sirtis as Deanna Troi, Michael Dorn as Worf, LeVar Burton as Geordi La Forge, and Brent Spiner as Lore. Michelle Hurd is also back as Raffi Musiker, as well as Star Trek: Voyager’s Jeri Ryan as Seven of Nine.
Picard Season 3 isn’t just about bringing back familiar faces, the show is also introducing fans to new talent, including Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut and Mica Burton as Sidney and Alandra La Forge and Amanda Plummer as the villainous Vadic. Others joining the fray are Todd Stashwick (12 Monkeys) as Captain Shaw of the USS Titan, and new series regular and associate of Beverly Crusher, Ed Speleers (Outlander).

Give this man control over new Star Trek shows going forward. A breath of fresh air who respects the franchise and wants to see it do well. Thank you Terry! First real Trek in years. Fire that hack Kurtzman.

It still wouldn’t be Star Trek. Secret Hideout are opposed to making what Star Trek was. But after 14 seasons of content they should at least be good at making NuTrek. If the reports are accurate Terry has shown the way. But this is Secret Hideout, and I expect their next project will hard swerve in a new direction under a new showrunner.
2024 is the next election? NuTrek will probably tell a story about ‘ICE is bad’ ‘Tear down walls’ and cast an active political figure as an important political figure in Trek who carries the hopes and dreams of everyone…
Matalas’s PS3 looks like an accident of good show running when you consider he moved on from Secret Hideout. And while he could come back… it won’t be for the next show, where they might well recall Kurtzman into the showrunner chair.
The problem is Secret Hideout have no fan confidence left. And even if PS3 is the pearl necklace from an abusive spouse that symbolises the promise never to hit the fans again, the fact is the fans still flinch when Secret Hideout talk of another project in the works
… Creidt where it’s due. PS3 has been the biggest marketing push designed to change peoples views. This NuTrek series impressed RMB and DCullin, and on them Secret Hideout have managed to turn some of NutTreks opinion around. But when you consider that Star Treks heart and soul reside in the Orville, what we have is still just a lifeless soulless corpse that’s been presented well, with a better puppeteer pulling its strings, while Secret Hideouts marketing pull the fans.

Terry Matalas is a lucky fan who got the dream job. I'm certain there's a million Trek fans out there who would have done just as good a job as he did. I don't think it's a case that "he did really well and deserves all this praise" but rather the focus should be on the people before him doing such a bad job and allowing the first two seasons to happen. What were they doing working on this franchise in the first place when they know very little about it? I just think that unless you love this show and know it well, you shouldn't be part of the creative process. Actors I can forgive.

Pretty sure that was always the deal when Patrick Stewart first sat down and agreed to do just 3 seasons of it in the first place, something like "do whatever you want for first two years, just make sure we get our damn reunion arc by the end!" Terry Matalas writing being the desperately needed icing on the cake we were extra lucky to have, might have again in few years
