One note: It can be a tremendous advantage on METALS to have a "cold", non-invasive, marking that doesn't disrupt the surface being marked. We make high-precision molding pins and such for the medical industry. This is typically out of a tool steel, a stainless steel, or a specialty copper alloy like Moldstar 90. Sometimes these parts are smaller, with polished surfaces, and very tight tolerances (e.g., .0002" total tolerance). Depending on the part, it can be a disadvantage to have a laser "engraving" that's burning away material, technically creating raised edges of the lettering, and might warp/deflect a surface (depending) due to heat. With a UV laser you are able to (as I understand it) get a durable marking on the surface without actually damaging that surface to do so, and there's little to no heat impact on the part.
So, what about these subsurface laser engravers that can etch 3d pictures into three inch sheets of acrylic? I looked one up, it was over 20,000 dollars. Please answer this question. I find it difficult to get info on this.
