Thanks Andy when I first found your channel years ago you had a identical boat to mine in your shop and you gave a lesson in buffing gelcoat on it since then I have learned so much from watching your videos weather it is a quick tip or a major in depth repair you always teach me something thank you for sharing your never ending knowledge you are a wealth of information and a very good teacher. Thank you
Keep the technic videos coming. Its nice to see you progress on your boat, but our boats have 2 different projects. I love coming here learning a skill and then putting it to use on my boat.
I am not at all surprised you didn’t have a sawsall. I see people on site too often grab it for jobs where another tool would be more appropriate... slower, but more appropriate. You are the type of guy who chooses the right way over the easy way.
Your on the cusp of stardom my friend. Great production quality, and at that subscriber level where exponential growth can launch from. Amazing content!
I've learned so much from this channel, not just knowledge but the confidence that comes with it. ironically, with the boat rebuilt and ready to splash my last step is.... buffing it. so yes, this video is timely as i didnt even know you had to use a special machine. i thought you were using a grinder because... hell, it looks like one. i got to practice my epoxy skills when i stuck a buffer thing on my 7" grinder. grrrrr.
SAWZALL, you do know Andy is a Festool GUY right, and the dust collection will be a factor will way heavy on his choice (for good reason), I am sure that what we see will be the BOMB, thanks Andy, I was counting on your OCD for the Transom replacement, glad you did.
Hello Andy i've never done fibreglassing and the transom of my boat i've just purchased was rotten. Thanks to your videos i have started removing the wood and practicing how to glass on an old pond. The only thing is a lot of the products are not available in western australia. I have managed to track down West Boat no one knows what 1708 is. Great work keep it up
Andy. Would you please consider a segment where you review your tools, pros and cons with their p/n? Thanks for the great videos. Sorry about the transom but, I was one of those who voted to dig in from the get. Thanks again.
Hey Andy, thanks for taking the time to make this great video. I don't own a fiberglass boat, but the education I get watching your video is priceless. For example, I'm plan to use my knowledge to rebuild a fiberglass battery box in our RV that the previous owner literally cut the bottom out where the bottom meets the sides, then supports it with some homemade angle brackets from underneath. Now the box collect road grim and dirt when traveling. I'm looking to use TotalBoat 5:1 Epoxy Resin, 3 Oz Chopped Stranded Mat to form the corner, and 3 or 4 layers of 1708 Fiberglass 45/45 DBM Biaxial fiberglass to tie it all together. The box will have to support, worse case, @ 130-140 Lbs, if I go with 2 lead acid batteries. Do those ingredients sound reasonable? Thanks.
Out of all the cool tools you own....you don't have a Sawzall????? Lol Your videos have have given me the confidence to refurbish my 1994 falcon super striper boat. Keep them coming
When you buy the Sawzall, look for the scraper blade that fits it. That thing is the nuts for removing caulk or soundproofing. (And I imagine floor tiles which is probably what they intended it to be used for ...)
When you said "but the true test is how's it smell... kinda like vinegar and a$$" for some reason that was hilarious! #IKnowYouHaveSaidItBefore #ThatWasFunny
Hi Andy. That buffing technique and compound is good for gelcoat and Alexseal paint. I have an old 1985 Hatteras and it's painted using IMRON paint. Pretty much all older Hatteras were like that out of the factory. What would you recommend for this type of paint? I've tested on a small area 3M medium corse compound (with polish) and the results are ok but I feel it could be much better. Thank you for all you time and effort you put into those videos. Richard.
I need that buffing compound, that was the first thing I saw was it was out of stock. Some of the better stuff I've used over the years they no longer make. I really want to try this stuff. Aquabuff just doesn't do the job like I want. But Flitz, will put a hell of a shine on it, if you get those scratches out first. If I can't get some soon, I might try the old school "stick" compounds. I hate them but they work. I've got so much sanding and buffing to do this year, it just isn't funny.
Curious for the next installment to see whether you use the method or removing the plywood that I did. I also used an air chisel with a broad blade to remove the skin. Hard on the ears, but easier on the shoulders than a pry bar. :)
Question Andy I learn so much from you so thank you for all your stuff. Hope I can ask a question. I was given a cedar strip tornado which I would like to convert to a small solar electric cat. My question is..... is there a way to use polyester resin with the cedar core. For health reasons and cost I would prefer not to use epoxy if possible? Also does total boat have a canadian distributer?
Andy, I like you projects! I am going to fabricate a new transom out of 2 layers of 3/4" Bluewater 26 Coosa board. Should I use matt between the layers OR just thickened epoxy or a layer of 1708?
I have 5 sawzalls i'll mail you up one. you really should have two types, 1: milwaukee super sawzall, 2: the mini sawzall to get into tight places. you helped me a lot so i will return the favor.
Andy, some time ago you had asked suggestions on the transom and I had mentioned to put your excellent skills to work and make an outboard bracket as part of the boat. Is that what you decided on? You mentioned on making the stringers through the existing transom - was just wondering.....
Hi is there a reason why you chose a Bertram moppie to do all your repairs or videos. By the way I have never seen any one that can make everything look so easy! Or so neat and clean ! Keep them coming!
Love it when you get into the building aspect of the boat. Any chance to make the videos a bit longer ? Say a half hour or so,I'm just getting into it and your rapping up. LOL Anyway, I look forward to your videos every Sunday, stay safe and hopefully this whole virus thing will clear up soon. :- )
So I learned that you use a compounding pad to do compounding 👍. Never realized that’s what that wool pad was actually called. But then what should I be using when waxing? You say you never use a buffing pad so I’m assuming you don’t use that for wax. Do I wax with a compounding pad but on a lower speed? What are those foam pads with the dimples used for?
Hi Andy, awesome job on this! I've got a gelcoat question for you- Can I apply marine paint over no-wax gelcoat to cure it? Or must I use a wax additive? Thanks.
What are your thoughts on water ways ie designs in your nonskid. When I was in the service our deck guys did some amazing designs and patterns in our nonskid.
Hi Andy from Perth Australia, keep the technical videos coming, they are great. Is it ok to keep buffing the boat each year or will it take off too much gelcoat over time? Cheers
Serious question how far into a project boat do you get before you question if its worth it? For me I'd have stopped on the Bertram a while ago but you're about to replace the transom.
This boat is well worth it. Plus Andy is supplying the labor and getting paid from UA-cam and patrion to show us how to do do these jobs right the first time. If you were paying someone to do everything it would cost a ton but just watch Florida Dream Boat builders they get paid to fix boats like this to better than new condition with customers paying $100k to $150k for a 25 year old boat. Do it yourself and save a ton is what Andy is teaching. Good day 👍
Do you know the make/model of the pry bar you use, or do you know where you bought it? I like the flat "head" on it and can't seem to find one like that in the length you have.
What are the pros and cons of rotary vs. dual action for compounding? I was told that a rotary can do a lot of damage if not used properly so I've avoided them.
question: I'm rehabbing a 14 ft flat bottom fishing boat, almost ready to start laying glass. outer hull gelcoat has spider cracks throughout. was planning on regelcoating after reglassing and replacing floor and transom. as far as gelcoat goes, what methods would you se to prep for replacing gelcoat?
I am replacing transom on Bertram 20 and following along. The 20 has a single plywood collar 2", but the rest of transom is cored withe 2 layers of balsa below water line and 1 layer above. All covered in single layer of roving. Do you have balsa under there? My boat is a 1966.
You need to run coring over the entire transom from port to starboard and at least to the height of the original coring and you need to tie the stringers in too. When that hull was an I/O there was very little stress on the transom and the transom therefore was lightly built. As an I/O the weight of the motors and the majority of the stress of forward thrust was on the stringers. With a bracket the weight of the motors and the thrust they apply will be almost entirely on the transom. The bracket magnifies the forces too as it cantilevers the forces and weight further aft. You need to rebuild the transom for the stresses of the bracket and outboard motors rather than rebuilding it the way it had been previously.
Man wish I'd seen this months ago! I learned what he said about compounding pads after about $200 worth of purchases and a lot of wasted time... Don't waste your time, go with a compounding pad all the way!!!
The use of the vacuum to exhaust the cutting debris must make it easier to be able to handle the fiberglass dust. I am terribly bother by fiberglass dust. Terribly itchy for me.
Hi Andy, I noticed at time 10:54 you grabbed the buffer and when you touched the pad there was a lot of dust that came off. Is there a correct way to keep these pads clean before doing a job?
Yeah. Use compressed air to blow loaded compound/paint slurry out of the pad. And when the compressed air isn't getting enough compound out any more, switch to a clean pad, and throw the old one in the laundry. AmmoNYC has a whole show on pad choice and care. Generally speaking, automotive technique applies for all this sort of thing.
Even though I do not understand every word, my impression is that you show very well what has to be done and why. As I am a German native speaker, I would be glad if you could speak just a litte bit slower... Best rageds, Ben
@@jamesadams1064 Funny you say that, I've never drank corona, until lately, due to what's going on. Found some, went back for more, Now, I can't find it ! !
That glass looked like it came off the plywood a bit too easily. Personally I would not be looking forward to removing the plywood from the outer skin. I am guessing that will not be a fun task.
Thanks Andy and I hope you keep doing the tech tips they are a great help 👍👍
I had worked in the marine industry for 8 years was never shown the way to use buffer like that. Good advice thanks
Raises hand for a real-time buffing tutorial :)

I love the diy tips. Please keep them coming.
Hey man you give the best information out here by far thanks for the videos
Good call on opening up the transom, I'm glad you did that. Maybe it wasn't the popular vote, but it was the right decision.

Exactly how I did my boat. 1976 Fiberform. A whole bunch of work, but lots of fun, great experience, and well worth it after going for a ride.
Knew that transom was a bad hombre! Glad you broke into it, do it right do it once :D
Great tip and another great video!👍👍
After watching your last video went to Total Boat and ordered the compound and was put on back order.... hope to get it soon!

Im a big fan of your work. I’m restoring a 1984 21 paramount, what resin do you recommend for transom, and stringers?
I have 5 sawzalls i'll mail you up one. you really should have two types, 1: milwaukee super sawzall, 2: the mini sawzall to get into tight places. you helped me a lot so i will return the favor.
That , is one HELL of an offer !!!!!
Absolutely agree. I have the super, its great for big jobs, but you also need something smaller, battery powered.

I'm rebuilding my boat and putting in a new transom from the inside, whats the best way to secure it while it dries, I don't have big clamps to do it.
How do you handle buffing the junction of gelcoat to bottom paint?

Hopefully your going to replace that wood, with abs plastic sheet. this way you dont have that same problem EVER.
just build a whole new boat from scratch already

I noticed that too. I've been given to understand that polyester resin doesn't really want to adhere to wood, at least not the way epoxy will.
