Lyrics:
I knew a man Bojangles
And he danced for you
In worn out shoes
With silver hair, a ragged shirt
And baggy pants, the old soft shoe
He jumped so high, jumped so high
Then he lightly touched down
I met him in a cell in New Orleans
I was down and out
He looked at me to be the eyes of age
As he spoke right out
He talked of life, he talked of life
He laughed, slapped his leg a step
Mr.Bojangles, Mr.Bojangles, Mr.Bojangles danced
He said his name, Bojangles
And he danced a lick
Across the cell
He grabbed his pants
In fettered stance
Oh, he jumped up high
Then he clicked his heels
He let go a laugh, he let go a laugh
Shook back his clothes all around
Mr. Bojangles, Mr. Bojangles
Mr. Bojangles, dance
He danced for those
At minstrel shows and county fairs
Throughout the south
He spoke with tears of 15 years
How his dog and him traveled about
His dog up and died, he up and died
After 20 years he still grieves
He said I dance now
At every chance in honky tonks
For drink and tips
But most of the time
I spend behind these county bars
Cause I drinks a bit
He shook his head
And as he shook his head
I heard someone ask him
Please, please
Mr. Bojangles, Mr. Bojangles
Mr. Bojangles, dance!

Nina was simply "Sublime" Dec. 2024
Mr. Bojangles 🗣🔥🔥🔥
An almost divine recording of Mr. Bojangles. Nina truly was one of a kind.
She was simply a GODDESS
Although you have been gone for 17 years, your music and memory lives on.
Beautifull rendition but its my favourite song respect to sammy davis also
Nina was born to sing this❤
Just discovered Nina Simone what a brilliant artist she was
Same thing I said a year ago. I first thought the first few songs of hers I heard were originally recorded by her. That's how good she could cover any song she performed. Check out the Nina sings the blues album
It’s really annoying that you can’t just forget.. like drag to bin that memory.. I’d love to find her again
Btw did you know she was born Leroy Mactavatt?? Hell of a right hook
Just like Josephine Baker, crossroads of struggles for black freedom brought Eunice "Nina Simone" Barber into exile here in France. She died in the south of France almost 2 decades ago. I still agonize over the destiny of our black heroes bridging 2 hostile continents crippled into racism against them, while their art genius and might shine over the world. RiP Nina, we deceived you. All of us. I will always cherish your art and legacy.
It lifts your soul in a sad and happy way at the same time. It's especially pertinent in the world just now. Peace.
yes makes me want to cry...
Simple the best ❤❤❤❤❤
Nice performance beautiful ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Nina Simone was a Goddess! Her version of Mr Bojangles jerks a couple tears everytime i hear her sing it. Its the lines about Mr B's dog that get me . RIP King Duke, its been over 20 years and i still grieve. I'll be joining you in a minute.
that's the part that alsotake out a tear from me always..... some day me and my old friends will be running again.
👊🏾✊🏾
lucky you.
While I respect and admire Sammy Davis Jr's love & embodiment of this American classic, Nina Simone's cover is still by far my favorite.
Lots of emotion woven into her interpretation.
You aint lying, i cry every time i hear her sing it. Sammy's doesn't do that to me.
Nobody could do Mr. Bojangles like Nina. One of a kind, beautiful lady. I still miss her.
Me too
For me personately it was Sammy Davis Jr who did it for me. He sang the hell out of this song!
Sammy Davis did it resplendently, masterfully orchestrating undulating waves of emotions. The best version indeed.
Someone like Nina doesn't die, be delighted.
Im 70yrs young...still sends me..Nina's the absolute best 👵💓💙💜💛😘
Ditto
Dude 70 is old af, get real.
@@7531monkey af???
@@7531monkey
Not for everyone it isn't look at Sylvester Stallone He's almost 80 and he looks and his late sixties
But I mean if you're a zoomer and you're 20 something years old, to you I guess 70 would be old because you don't understand the concept of old
You're like that 4-year-old child that says that 18 year old is old
I’m 75 and love listening to Nina, absolutely the best. ♥️🎶♥️🎶♥️🎶♥️🎶
Its October 2020
These youngsters these days should be listening to more artists like nina simone, they just don't know what they are missing. Her version of mr. Bojangles is just spectacular!!!!!!!!
Thank you nina
God bless you for leaving the world your voice.
I totally agree, and thank you Nina for all your music.♥️🎶♥️🎶
Sublime et envoûtant... Respect for Nina Simone !!!
Congratulations Nina Simone for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Finally getting the recognition you always deserved
This haunting version is sublime. I connect so deeply with its melancholy. On my playlist forever. Not since Billie Holliday has been there such an existentially human, sultry voice. ❤️❤️❤️
Yup. This one and her version of Randy Newman's Baltimore. Only time I've been there is when Miss Simone sings. She makes me feel like been born & raised in that hard luck city!
Billy isn't a patch on Nina, I say with respect.
Elle nous fait rêver. ....
You are so right!
This women. Had a voice like no other..there is only One Nina.. Like many super stars who are now gone.. But not forgotten..
WHY AM I SITTING UP HERE LISTENING TO THIS AND CRYING? IT'S JUST BEAUTIFUL, HER VOICE😭😭😭😭😭
This song is coming from way back in time before You Tube ube, Facebook , Spotify and all the other online platforms that play music
A voice from heaven lifts Mr Bojangles up to the greatest mundane and nevertheless poignant characters. A miracle, word after word.
This is without a doubt the absolutely the best verson of Mr. Bojangles I have ever heard. Bravo Madam Simone.
John Sheets totally agree
This song reveals more and more each time I listen to it. Love Nina's singing.
Merci pour ce merveilleux moment...
Je pense à ma maman qui me manque tellement 💕💞

Beautiful rendition of this song. Done with so much clarity
Just heard Ms. Simone's cover on the soundtrack of "What Just Happened," a 2008 Barry Levinson film with Robert De Niro. As always, Nina knocks it out of the recording studio!
Velvet voice and a lady to make a great song! God Bless you Nina!
Merci Mr Bourdeaut
This song,, the true meaning of Soul Music.,.it's what it touches...

French pride hihihi !!! I love this book ❤
Pareil
Sameeee😂
I love the book
She is a better as they say in Scotland and truly divine.
❤❤❤
For my money, this is THE version of this great, great 1967 prison song by Jerry Jeff Walker. It dramatizes every word of Walker's wonderful lyrics, puts you right there in the cell with the other inmates and a born entertainer. First verse shows the man Bojangles, an amazing dancer in rags, but "eyes of age" who not only dances but talks, "speaks right out." Second verse, with its gorgeous strings, joyful dance, its history of Bojangles dancing career and the death of his companion dog is sublime. It stops, and for second you think the song has ended. But it picks up with a surprise third verse and Bojangles' confession of why he's in jail ("I drinks a bit") and someone respectfully asking Bojangles "please .... Mr. Bojangles ... Dance." The tinkly ending disappoints me, but not that much; Nina's voice is so real and respectful of the humble man who throughout the South was the legendary Bojangles ...

My precious tears. Wonderful
This splendor of words cannot attach it
The tears which you shed would have various memories while listening to her song.
Would there be the sophisticated tears?
This song touches the depth of my soul, brings tears to my eyes very time! Thank you, Ms Simone, lots of love to you always.
One of my favorite songs.👍👍👍
just wonderful
Magnifique
This one reminds me of my days in Chicago..at Edward Palmer and Alice house. I just love Nina's voice..her musicianship.
superbe balade!! merci Nina
20 years we are all still greving for Iggy
Love never dies xx
A thousand Beyonce's and 500 Swifts wouldn't equal half the vocal talent of Nina
Nina Queen!
Un régal !
HOW DARE I HAVE TO SCROLL 8X TO GET THIS VERSION!
Best version.
Wonderful
Rest in Power, Jerry Jeff Walker
I actually think that the song is talking about Bill Robinson. We can see it when she says « Mr. Bojangles danced », since Bill Robinson was a tap dancer. Also, when she talks about the dog, he did have a travel dog apparently
@@imarim5395 Jerry Jeff Walker wrote the song Mr. Bojangles

Sammy Davis did it resplendently, masterfully orchestrating undulating waves of emotions. The best version indeed.
like listening to a thousand dreams that have been deferred all whispered in your ear, all at once.
I have never been able to listen to Nina sing it with out crying and tonight I had to stop listening.
Too much far too much. One of the truly saddest songs I have ever heard. I would liken it to the book 'Of Mice and Men'
Its America in verse and rhyme
Very well said friend. Wow👏
One of my top songs.

Oh this poor true dog I understand that Mr Bojangles is grieving for 20 years Still my cat dies I grieve forever
nice version but Sammy owns this tune. he brings it to life and fills it with emotion.
