My friend is the guy who shot this video that nite. Unfortunately a security guard spotted him and made him stop midway through believer. My friend had 2 tapes on him and when the guard demanded he turn over the tape, he gave the guard the blank one and kept the recorded version you see here. I saw Randy at his last show in Knoxville Tennessee March 18th 1982...Amazing show and after the show we went down to where the tour bus was parked and stood on the railing hoping to get a glimpse of the band as they were leaving and Randy came out and waved at all of us...I remember thinking how small he looked lol....We were all so happy after the show and then the next day we heard the news he had been killed...Seems almost surreal..I can still see him on stage that night...Everytime I see the Civic Coliseum I think of him...R.I.P. Randy, You were the best!
It was the end of August in '81 for me. To this day I am awestruck at the memories I have of that show at the Grand Rapids Civic Auditorium. It was a small, dynamite place to see Def Leppard open for Ozzy. I remember saying to myself at the time, that guy is so tiny compared to that guitar. Randy railed that LP all night, the sound... I could not believe what I was seeing, and hearing from this short, thin young man with really long hair. For some reason, I thought his hair was longer -

Considering Ozzy nearly killed himself drinking after he left Sabbath, this is amazing. His hope and happiness returned. Ozzy admits a lot of that is due to Randy.
The whole band was really great and brought their A game .I agree ozman did deliver seeing him live many times I've heard him attempt to hit a note and not quite get there of course he was 20 years older and had much substance in between but he tried more than I can say for today's talent they just won't even attempt to try Ozzy don't give a fuck and is great no matter but for Randy he's spot on and no longer with us it's his day.theres not many recorded live performances of his this is like the fourth one that I've seen that was actually ok.but sound quality has been issue this is great save it cause it's the best I've seen my friend keep rocking
I agree. Even though he carried on with great stage presence in the years after, in the performances Ive seen, his vocals werent as good as the early 80s ones.

Randy's playing was so clear, neat and rhythmically perfect that even through the far from perfect audio quality of this video you can clearly appreciate all his talent and the soulful power of his sound. God bless Randy Rhoads. 🎸🙏🏻☀️🎶
Randy was such a brilliant guitarist. I saw him regularly at the Starwood when he was in Quiet Riot. He never let the audience down, he rocked every single time! 2 shows a night!
Yeah, he was a great live performer with a ton of energy and charisma. Too bad there isn't more video footage out there to show just how great he was on stage!
My photo album has a picture of me being held by Randy when I was just 2 years old. My sister bundled me out to a concert, and afterward she got backstage and ran into Randy and asked him if he could do a photo with me on his lap. I will always treasure it.
Seeing a humbled Randy Rhodes talking about his '1981 Best New Talent' award and saying "I don't want to stop here...." just brings so much sadness....God Bless you Randy - we miss you and can only imagine what you would have done had you lived. Damn world is full of hip hop crap, no talent singers and boy bands.....

Right? Pandurate...youve got your head up your ass. Randy was one of the best guitarists ever. I remember when he came out it WAS Eddie VH. But when Diary came out, that was it. Randy was the new guy and EVERY guitar player realized...I can't say they forgot about Eddie, but there was a huge turning over to Randy Rhoads because of the classical thing. Uli Roth and Blackmore had used classical but Randy took it a step forward. I met him and he had the most humble personality. You'd think someone that good would be lofty and snobbish or full of himself. Randy was neither. Randy was ready to move on though. Anyone who knocks him either doesn't have any inclination of proficiency or lack thereof any knowledge of music from a technical point of view.
Just read a comment about Randy being the loudest guitarist. In Dallas during this tour Randy hit a artificial harmonic that ....and I'm not exaggerating...split my head down the middle. Almost like he found a way to separate both hemispheres of my brain. To this day, when I get a headache, the part of my head that hurts is the same part Randy "found". That harmonic was worth it!
mike eaton Ted Nugent did that in Greensboro in 1987 opening up for KISS. He hit a harmonic so loud and so high that it was on the threshold of not being registered by the mind! Wished I could have seen Randy - the guy was a real workhorse and was dedicated to the guitar.
This means that you listened music with high volume during your life no cause Randy. High Level makes a deaf damage and broke your brain. It's funny but if you are around the speakers the sound smelt your head, RR Did the same like all metal guitarists, very loud and heavy.

The solo to Crazy Train is incredible, it's so angelic that you can't help but shed a tear every time it's played, Randy was gone way too soon, his legacy will live on and continues to teach me and many many others everyday

@Gary Roberts Eddie was very threatened by Randy, you can tell by the way he talks about him in early 80's interviews....saying ridiculous things like "everything Randy does he got from me." Randy played nothing like Eddie, he was his own genius.
I saw the show on same tour May 4th in the Springfield Mass. I went to high school with Randy's half brother name Dan Rhoads in Winsted Connecticut, I had huge privilege to know Rhoads's family. I met Randy and whole band that night, I will never forget how generous and kind Randy was? After 37 years later I still think of him, How great he was? and even How greater he could been?
My sister took me to see the blizzard tour on August 14,1981at Nassau Colusium Long lsland..I still have my tour shirt brand new in the bag with the crosses on the back. I couldn't believe how clean and powerful he was live.. I had tickets for the Diary of a Madman tour on March 28, 1982. He passed away of course 10 days earlier. I wouldn't go, it was to depressing at that time..
@@mickcostello3668 I saw the Diary show at MSG and to this day it had to be the saddest most disappointing and just total bummer of a show that I've ever been to. Not getting to see Randy is still probably my biggest letdown of my concert going life. I don't listen to metal much anymore but love coming out here and seeing what I can find of Randy. On top of the tragedy of losing him way too early... it's also a travesty with how little video there is of him. You can go see crystal clear videos of any band from the 60s and even earlier...yet there's so little clear videos of him. What's also ridiculous is how it's a fact that there is a gold mine of concert videos that Sharon has from the Blizzard and especially Diary tours cause they did professionally shoot a bunch of concerts..as well as Bob Daisley has the Holy Grail that includes great recordings of Randy in concert, sound checking, and working out the songs along with videos of them on tour..yet that bitch Sharon won't release them and for some reason Bob Daisley won't either. It makes no sense considering how many millions of people would kill to see them. It's such a bummer knowing that there are tons of great quality recordings yet we may never get to hear or see them.

I still have my hand painted Blizzard of Ozz denim vest that I used to wear back in the day. I was so crazy about Randy and Ozzy at the time and although I don't really listen to metal anymore I still love coming out here to see what I can find with Randy. This is incredible. Ozzy’s voice is at its peak. Singing in the same key as the album. Sharon Osborne deserves a special place in hell for not allowing any filming of ozzy shows during this era.
uh, pretty sure that wasn't due to sharon - 40 years ago most large venues and artists forbid filming/recording bands due to the lucrative world of bootlegging.
I love the way Randy's leads bounce off the back of the hall! His feel is all his and no one can deny he was a very gifted musician and person. Everyone who has ever met him says so. He was angel as they used to say.
+T50 ASMR it was good but don't be fooled: they used to tune their instrument a half step down live, here the sound is half-step up, so his voice sounds brighter and higher than it actually was by a whole step, which is a lot. It's a problem with the audio. Either it's faster, or it's just sharp for some reason.
I saw this first leg of their tour in September in Davenport, Iowa at Palmer Auditorium. Best concert I've ever seen hands down. I was going to see the second part of their tour in Des Moines, Iowa, where he bit the bats head off but, I couldn't find a ride so, I missed it. There's no way to explain the sound of Randy's guitar. No recording, great or other can give you the feeling of hearing him live. I'm amazed that this concert was recorded on video because at Davenport, myself and everyone else had been frisked really well, looking for any recording device. Funny thing, this concert was when they only had released one album and the opening act was Def Leppard also, with one album out. Both played a couple songs from their second album. What an experience! I'll never forget it. I was stunned when I was riding in a friends car and heard on the radio that Randy had died in a plane crash. It's one of those moments where you remember where you were and what you were doing. Cheers, Randy. RIP.

Saw first tour with def lep at cape cod collesseum in Yarmouth ma incredible......this show is right befor he did I believe.and yes I remember being at has beach party and all the girls crying and guys in shock......

I was 15 years old at the time when I shot this film! I also shot iron maiden AC DC Michael Schenker and Motorhead If anybody has any questions? please feel free to ask?? I saw a Randy play 6 times this was the 3rd time. I was ready front row Loge. The second roll of film broke in the camera and I tried desperately to fix it but it wouldn’t work shortly after that Randy’s guitar amp blew up and they had to stop the show for about three minutes. But this is Randy’s best performance of any of the shows that I ever saw he was on fire that night having played two shows I also filmed Motörhead that night because I love the motorhead two rolls of 15 minute I’ve often thought God I shouldn’t of wasted the roll-on Motörhead and kept them for Ozzie but I was planning on doing two of each before the last roll broke.
Steve Love Hi Steve that was a typo. Randy’s guitar amp blew up it was his Marshall and he would have been playing Mr. Crowley at the time so it was probably the polkadot guitar that he was playing I saw him six times he made it look so easy every time
I was only 11 when Randy passed & there was jus something that drew myself 2 him!!! Thank u Jesus 4 these videos, there will never ever b another!! The mold was broken big time. Awesome seeing a master like Randy play! He will always be one of the greatest ever to pick up a guitar. Class act all the way and simply an incredible guitar player. I will never forget how he changed the world of guitar when ' Blizzard of Oz ' came out. Eddie Van Halen blew us away prior and then Randy was the next to do the same. Both were incredible forces that changed guitar with their incredible skill, styles, stage presents and vision. We were blessed to see talent like them. I will never forget how exciting it was at that time being young and having someone like them to look up to and learn from. They were like the Clapton, Hendrix and Page of our generation. This is the mark of a great guitar player: as shoddy as video was at the time, Randy's brilliance STILL shines through, and you can hear every note he played. What a tragic loss for the guitar world. Good lord even with the crappy sound of this old recorded vhs footage randys guitar sounds incredible, the solos were amazing and truly godly. To play that good live only few can. I saw megadeth when chris broderick was lead on the countdowns 25th anniversary tour, they played perfect live, kk and glen from priest sound perfect live. When i say perfect i mean it sounds as good or better than the album live and that is rare for lots of bands believe it or not, the late great randy rhodes played perfect every show. Agreed the greatest live guitar player of all time, EVH had his moments but he was never nearly as good live as his studio recordings and that's what sets them apart for me

I always thought the same as well. Their unique, and will never be the same. To this day I don't know who preformed with Ozzy. Just Zakk of course. Drummer and basis. Couldn't tell ya. Not that it matters to me. The best aren't playing anymore with Ozzy.

Its great that concert footage of Randy playing is starting to come out. Its so weird that all we ever had until the past few years is "Tribute" which most of us probably had as the bootleg "Bat's Head Soup" years before. No videos only that one recording. I Love Randy Rhodes... During those interviews clips at the end, Randy shows himself to be such a gentle, humble guy, with a good soul- You all prob think I'm nuts, but I get a really good vibe from him. I've not had the chance to see any of those clips before- Great Post, thanks a million

You know the rest of that story. To this day there is none like him, and I love him as much as I ever did. And as for the misspelling, it must've been my system; spellcheck, something like that. To be sure, I would've never misspelled his name, disrespecting him in such a manner. But I thank you for pointing it out.
His fire was unbelievable, in every riff, guitar fill and solo, it just flowed out of him. He was so good live in this video (these so little footage of him live thank you for this). It’s such a tragedy, what a gifted ground breaking kid that didn’t every really get to live! long live Randy!
Years ago,, Ozzy Osborne was coming to the Sam Houston Coliseum on February 17th (1982). Since first hearing Ozzy’s “Blizzard of Oz” solo album, his new guitar player Randy Rhoads had become my guitar hero. I didn't know much about him, nor did I even know what he looked like, because Ozzy's album pictures really didn't distinguish who was who in the band photo. To this point, I had assumed that the dark-haired guy (Rudy) was the guitar player I had recently come to idolize. Anyway, my girlfriend Mindy and our housemate Chris quickly found a way to score some tickets for the show. I figured if we showed up at the arena early enough, we might get a chance to meet the band before the show. It was a warm afternoon in Houston when Chris, Mindy and I arrived at the concert hall. We made our way around to the loading dock side of the building to look for tour buses or any other sign of band life. The road crew had already arrived and was setting up the elaborate stage for the “Diary of A Madman” tour. Surprisingly, the atmosphere was very relaxed. We were able to simply walk in and observe at our leisure without anyone hassling us. This went on for the better part of the afternoon. As we loitered about the premises, I befriended Randy’s guitar tech. He informed me that the band would be showing up around 5pm to do a soundcheck. In the meantime, he invited me into a makeshift dressing room to have a look at Randy’s guitars. They were sitting on guitar stands right in front of me. Just feet away from my hands were Randy’s signature cream Les Paul with the snakeskin strap, along with three custom made “V” shaped guitars. His polka-dot V, white pinstripe V and a black one, the latter two sporting the name “Jackson” on the headstocks. At this point, I was not really familiar with his guitars. And this was also long before Jackson Guitars became a household name. Needless to say, I was quite intrigued by them. Luckily, I had the presence of mind to bring a disposable camera with me. I asked the guitar tech if I could take a few pictures of the guitars. He didn’t mind, so I began to snap away. Just as I was photographing the assortment of guitars, a rather large and in charge road manager walked in on me and freaked out. “What the f#$k are you doing in here??? Gimme that efffing camera, those are custom made guitars!” he barked. The guitar tech tried to quell the big fellows concerns, but he would have no part in negotiating any compromise. “Gimme the effing camera if you wanna see the show” he demanded. As a 22 year old punk kid, I was in no position to argue, so I reluctantly gave the Paul Bunion looking troll my stupid camera. The guitar tech apologized for the road managers over-reaction and allowed us all to stay and hang out. Like clockwork, the tour bus pulled into the loading dock at 5pm. Tommy Aldridge, Rudy Sarzo and Randy Rhoads soon stepped out. Randy was wearing blue jeans, a black pleather jacket with no shirt under it with a white towel draped around his neck. Absent from the group was Ozzy, who apparently didn’t do soundcheck with the rest of the group. I quickly made my way over to who I thought was Randy and asked for an autograph. Slightly unprepared, I only had a small piece of paper that I had found nearby for them to sign. Rudy signed one side of the paper and Randy Rhoads signed the other side. I managed to make some small talk, at first thinking that Rudy was actually Randy. Up to this point, (As I said, I wasn’t entirely sure what Randy actually looked like). “Man, you’re a great guitar player” I said. Rudy looked at me sort of puzzled and pointed me in the direction of the actual Randy Rhoads. Needless to say, I felt like a douche. Randy was very unassuming, soft-spoken and frankly humble. He happily complied with my autograph request. He had to lean the small piece of paper onto the side of the cinder block wall in order to write his signature. He simply wrote, "Randy Rhoads". After several minutes, the band disappeared inside the arena and we followed along like lemmings. During their soundcheck, I stood directly in front of Randy Rhoads as the band ran through the song “Mr. Crowley” in its entirety. Randy was playing his cream Les Paul and never sounded better. I was in awe that afternoon, watching this soon to be legend warming up for the impending show right before my eyes. Except for my girlfriend Mindy, Chris and myself, (and a few road-crew guys), there was nobody else in the arena. A few short weeks later, Randy, twenty-five years old, was killed in a plane crash in Leesburg, Florida. I was devastated. His autograph remains framed on my studio wall to this day. Also, a few weeks earlier on March 5th, John Belushi died of a cocaine overdose. You could feel a chill in the psyche of the masses around Houston who had just absorbed the news of both of their untimely deaths. Both tragedies were a stark reminder of my own mortality....Can you imagine what would have been captured on my disposable camera had I been allowed to keep it??? Bob daisley and Lee kersak were the actual bass and drummer for the recording of this album and Bob wrote a majority of the lyrics as well.. Rudy and Tommy came on board for the tour and stayed until Randy passed
I was at this show, my first time seeing Ozzy. Motorhead opened. Saw him 3 months later at Nassau Coliseum. Had tickets to another Nassau Coliseum show in '82, Randy died in the plane crash a week before the show. They played anyway, but I ended up not going. Glad I got to see Randy twice, one of the best ever.

I saw Randy at day on the green and I have to say that I've seen a lot of the greatest guitar players in the world but Randy is the best live guitarist I have ever seen. The world has lost a true humble legend.
Ozzy only did two autograph signing sessions in his life ! One Columbus Ohio, Me and my band went in our leathers, soon as we walked in he locked eyes on me ! He started the NMT tour here "his last tour " and went to Tower Records on Guadalupe after he told the show so everyone was there.. they had to stop after 5 minutes cause the crowd was so packed the windows were bowing in they let 5 ppl at a time in I was in the next group to go in pressed against the glass the terror in the employees faces as they saw the windows bowing in had me worried myself they were about 12 ft tall if I'd of gone through it might of been my end
The Palladium doesn’t even exist anymore, demolished in order to build a twelve-story residence hall that students of NYU affectionately referred to as “Palladium Hall”. It’s a shame, it was an amazing room for bands.

I was at this concert. It was my 20th birthday. Motorhead opened . My ears rang for 2 days after, but a great show. The one thing I remember is that behind us, some jackass lit his seat and the seat next to him on fire. I never saw a person get such a beatdown in my life. The fire was put out in a matter of maybe 10 seconds, and the bouncers beat this guy almost to death, which was a great thing for all involved. A very memorable night. Ozzy and his white-fringed jacket!!!
When I was in high school in the mid to late 80s Randy had already made it it to a sort of sainthood with we metal heads already. Words fail me now as I watch a master at his craft. I just sit back and smile.

My friend is the guy who shot this video that nite. Unfortunately a security guard spotted him and made him stop midway through believer. My friend had 2 tapes on him and when the guard demanded he turn over the tape, he gave the guard the blank one and kept the recorded version you see here. I saw Randy at his last show in Knoxville Tennessee March 18th 1982...Amazing show and after the show we went down to where the tour bus was parked and stood on the railing hoping to get a glimpse of the band as they were leaving and Randy came out and waved at all of us...I remember thinking how small he looked lol....We were all so happy after the show and then the next day we heard the news he had been killed...Seems almost surreal..I can still see him on stage that night...Everytime I see the Civic Coliseum I think of him...R.I.P. Randy, You were the best!

It was the end of August in '81 for me. To this day I am awestruck at the memories I have of that show at the Grand Rapids Civic Auditorium. It was a small, dynamite place to see Def Leppard open for Ozzy. I remember saying to myself at the time, that guy is so tiny compared to that guitar. Randy railed that LP all night, the sound... I could not believe what I was seeing, and hearing from this short, thin young man with really long hair. For some reason, I thought his hair was longer -

The whole band was really great and brought their A game .I agree ozman did deliver seeing him live many times I've heard him attempt to hit a note and not quite get there of course he was 20 years older and had much substance in between but he tried more than I can say for today's talent they just won't even attempt to try Ozzy don't give a fuck and is great no matter but for Randy he's spot on and no longer with us it's his day.theres not many recorded live performances of his this is like the fourth one that I've seen that was actually ok.but sound quality has been issue this is great save it cause it's the best I've seen my friend keep rocking

My photo album has a picture of me being held by Randy when I was just 2 years old. My sister bundled me out to a concert, and afterward she got backstage and ran into Randy and asked him if he could do a photo with me on his lap. I will always treasure it.

Randy was the new guy and EVERY guitar player realized...I can't say they forgot about Eddie, but there was a huge turning over to Randy Rhoads because of the classical thing. Uli Roth and Blackmore had used classical but Randy took it a step forward. I met him and he had the most humble personality. You'd think someone that good would be lofty and snobbish or full of himself. Randy was neither. Randy was ready to move on though. Anyone who knocks him either doesn't have any inclination of proficiency or lack thereof any knowledge of music from a technical point of view.
Just read a comment about Randy being the loudest guitarist. In Dallas during this tour Randy hit a artificial harmonic that ....and I'm not exaggerating...split my head down the middle. Almost like he found a way to separate both hemispheres of my brain. To this day, when I get a headache, the part of my head that hurts is the same part Randy "found". That harmonic was worth it!

I saw the show on same tour May 4th in the Springfield Mass. I went to high school with Randy's half brother name Dan Rhoads in Winsted Connecticut, I had huge privilege to know Rhoads's family. I met Randy and whole band that night, I will never forget how generous and kind Randy was? After 37 years later I still think of him, How great he was? and even How greater he could been?

My sister took me to see the blizzard tour on August 14,1981at Nassau Colusium Long lsland..I still have my tour shirt brand new in the bag with the crosses on the back. I couldn't believe how clean and powerful he was live.. I had tickets for the Diary of a Madman tour on March 28, 1982. He passed away of course 10 days earlier. I wouldn't go, it was to depressing at that time..

Not getting to see Randy is still probably my biggest letdown of my concert going life. I don't listen to metal much anymore but love coming out here and seeing what I can find of Randy. On top of the tragedy of losing him way too early... it's also a travesty with how little video there is of him. You can go see crystal clear videos of any band from the 60s and even earlier...yet there's so little clear videos of him. What's also ridiculous is how it's a fact that there is a gold mine of concert videos that Sharon has from the Blizzard and especially Diary tours cause they did professionally shoot a bunch of concerts..as well as Bob Daisley has the Holy Grail that includes great recordings of Randy in concert, sound checking, and working out the songs along with videos of them on tour..yet that bitch Sharon won't release them and for some reason Bob Daisley won't either. It makes no sense considering how many millions of people would kill to see them. It's such a bummer knowing that there are tons of great quality recordings yet we may never get to hear or see them.

+T50 ASMR it was good but don't be fooled: they used to tune their instrument a half step down live, here the sound is half-step up, so his voice sounds brighter and higher than it actually was by a whole step, which is a lot. It's a problem with the audio. Either it's faster, or it's just sharp for some reason.

Randy is on fire here, man....what a loss. There's so little material yet even after all these decades I never get tired of it.
I saw this first leg of their tour in September in Davenport, Iowa at Palmer Auditorium. Best concert I've ever seen hands down. I was going to see the second part of their tour in Des Moines, Iowa, where he bit the bats head off but, I couldn't find a ride so, I missed it. There's no way to explain the sound of Randy's guitar. No recording, great or other can give you the feeling of hearing him live. I'm amazed that this concert was recorded on video because at Davenport, myself and everyone else had been frisked really well, looking for any recording device. Funny thing, this concert was when they only had released one album and the opening act was Def Leppard also, with one album out. Both played a couple songs from their second album. What an experience! I'll never forget it. I was stunned when I was riding in a friends car and heard on the radio that Randy had died in a plane crash. It's one of those moments where you remember where you were and what you were doing. Cheers, Randy. RIP.

I saw a Randy play 6 times this was the 3rd time. I was ready front row Loge.
The second roll of film broke in the camera and I tried desperately to fix it but it wouldn’t work shortly after that Randy’s guitar amp blew up and they had to stop the show for about three minutes. But this is Randy’s best performance of any of the shows that I ever saw he was on fire that night having played two shows I also filmed Motörhead that night because I love the motorhead two rolls of 15 minute I’ve often thought God I shouldn’t of wasted the roll-on Motörhead and kept them for Ozzie but I was planning on doing two of each before the last roll broke.

Awesome seeing a master like Randy play! He will always be one of the greatest ever to pick up a guitar. Class act all the way and simply an incredible guitar player. I will never forget how he changed the world of guitar when ' Blizzard of Oz ' came out. Eddie Van Halen blew us away prior and then Randy was the next to do the same. Both were incredible forces that changed guitar with their incredible skill, styles, stage presents and vision. We were blessed to see talent like them. I will never forget how exciting it was at that time being young and having someone like them to look up to and learn from. They were like the Clapton, Hendrix and Page of our generation. This is the mark of a great guitar player: as shoddy as video was at the time, Randy's brilliance STILL shines through, and you can hear every note he played. What a tragic loss for the guitar world. Randy was just way ahead of his time, and his attention to his tone was just amazing. Can't say enough good things about him. Thanks for sharing this vid. Your friend is a warrior.

Good lord even with the crappy sound of this old recorded vhs footage randys guitar sounds incredible, the solos were amazing and truly godly. To play that good live only few can. I saw megadeth when chris broderick was lead on the countdowns 25th anniversary tour, they played perfect live, kk and glen from priest sound perfect live. When i say perfect i mean it sounds as good or better than the album live and that is rare for lots of bands believe it or not, the late great randy rhodes played perfect every show. Agreed the greatest live guitar player of all time, EVH had his moments but he was never nearly as good live as his studio recordings and that's what sets them apart for me

I always thought the same as well. Their unique, and will never be the same. To this day I don't know who preformed with Ozzy. Just Zakk of course. Drummer and basis. Couldn't tell ya. Not that it matters to me. The best aren't playing anymore with Ozzy.

Its so weird that all we ever had until the past few years is "Tribute" which most of us probably had as the bootleg "Bat's Head Soup" years before. No videos only that one recording. Raymond Keenan My bad brother. I have been fascinated by Randy ever since my older brother and all his friends used to rave about Randy when I was about 11 years old, in 1981. You know the rest of that story. To this day there is none like him, and I love him as much as I ever did.
And as for the misspelling, it must've been my system; spellcheck, something like that. To be sure, I would've never misspelled his name, disrespecting him in such a manner. But I thank you for pointing it out.

Years ago,, Ozzy Osborne was coming to the Sam Houston Coliseum on February 17th (1982). Since first hearing Ozzy’s “Blizzard of Oz” solo album, his new guitar player Randy Rhoads had become my guitar hero. I didn't know much about him, nor did I even know what he looked like, because Ozzy's album pictures really didn't distinguish who was who in the band photo. To this point, I had assumed that the dark-haired guy (Rudy) was the guitar player I had recently come to idolize. Anyway, my girlfriend Mindy and our housemate Chris quickly found a way to score some tickets for the show. I figured if we showed up at the arena early enough, we might get a chance to meet the band before the show.
It was a warm afternoon in Houston when Chris, Mindy and I arrived at the concert hall. We made our way around to the loading dock side of the building to look for tour buses or any other sign of band life. The road crew had already arrived and was setting up the elaborate stage for the “Diary of A Madman” tour. Surprisingly, the atmosphere was very relaxed. We were able to simply walk in and observe at our leisure without anyone hassling us. This went on for the better part of the afternoon.
As we loitered about the premises, I befriended Randy’s guitar tech. He informed me that
the band would be showing up around 5pm to do a soundcheck. In the meantime, he invited me
into a makeshift dressing room to have a look at Randy’s guitars. They were sitting on guitar stands right in front of me. Just feet away from my hands were Randy’s signature cream Les Paul with the snakeskin strap, along with three custom made “V” shaped guitars. His polka-dot V, white pinstripe V and a black one, the latter two sporting the name “Jackson” on the headstocks. At this point, I was not really familiar with his guitars. And this was also long before Jackson Guitars became a household name. Needless to say, I was quite intrigued by them. Luckily, I had the presence of mind to bring a disposable camera with me. I asked the guitar tech if I could take a few pictures of the guitars. He didn’t mind, so I began to snap away. Just as I was photographing the assortment of guitars, a rather large and in charge road manager walked in on me and freaked out. “What the f#$k are you doing in here??? Gimme that efffing camera, those are custom made guitars!” he barked. The guitar tech tried to quell the big fellows concerns, but he would have no part in negotiating any compromise. “Gimme the effing camera if you wanna see the show” he demanded. As a 22 year old punk kid, I was in no position to argue, so I reluctantly gave the Paul Bunion looking troll my stupid camera. The guitar tech apologized for the road managers over-reaction and allowed us all to stay and hang out.
Like clockwork, the tour bus pulled into the loading dock at 5pm. Tommy Aldridge, Rudy
Sarzo and Randy Rhoads soon stepped out. Randy was wearing blue jeans, a black pleather jacket with no shirt under it with a white towel draped around his neck. Absent from the group was Ozzy, who apparently didn’t do soundcheck with the rest of the group. I quickly made my way over to who I thought was Randy and asked for an autograph. Slightly unprepared, I only had a small piece of paper that I had found nearby for them to sign. Rudy signed one side of the paper and Randy Rhoads signed the other side. I managed to make some small talk, at first thinking that Rudy was actually Randy. Up to this point, (As I said, I wasn’t entirely sure what Randy actually looked like). “Man, you’re a great guitar player” I said. Rudy looked at me sort of puzzled and pointed me in the direction of the actual Randy Rhoads. Needless to say, I felt like a douche. Randy was very unassuming, soft-spoken and frankly humble. He happily complied with my autograph request. He had to lean the small piece of paper onto the side of the cinder block wall in order to write his signature. He simply wrote, "Randy Rhoads".
After several minutes, the band disappeared inside the arena and we followed along like lemmings. During their soundcheck, I stood directly in front of Randy Rhoads as the band ran through the song “Mr. Crowley” in its entirety. Randy was playing his cream Les Paul and never sounded better. I was in awe that afternoon, watching this soon to be legend warming up for the impending show right before my eyes. Except for my girlfriend Mindy, Chris and myself, (and a few road-crew guys), there was nobody else in the arena. A few short weeks later, Randy, twenty-five years old, was killed in a plane crash in Leesburg, Florida. I was devastated. His autograph remains framed on my studio wall to this day. Also, a few weeks earlier on March 5th, John Belushi died of a cocaine overdose. You could feel a chill in the psyche of the masses around Houston who had just absorbed the news of both of their untimely deaths. Both tragedies were a stark reminder of my own mortality....Can you imagine what would have been captured on my disposable camera had I been allowed to keep it??? Bob daisley and Lee kersak were the actual bass and drummer for the recording of this album and Bob wrote a majority of the lyrics as well.. Rudy and Tommy came on board for the tour and stayed until Randy passed

I was at this show, my first time seeing Ozzy. Motorhead opened. Saw him 3 months later at Nassau Coliseum. Had tickets to another Nassau Coliseum show in '82, Randy died in the plane crash a week before the show. They played anyway, but I ended up not going. Glad I got to see Randy twice, one of the best ever.
Back in the 80's Halford said Nassau crowds were the most enthusiastic in the U.S. Can you confirm?

Yes Ozzy Metallica 86 legendary plus almost every show from 83-89 for any top rock act. I was at most.
Randy was a small guy but he was a giant monster guitar player and miss him a great deal I still listen to his music after 42 years . Thank you for sharing a great talented icon

I saw Randy at day on the green and I have to say that I've seen a lot of the greatest guitar players in the world but Randy is the best live guitarist I have ever seen. The world has lost a true humble legend.

Ozzy only did two autograph signing sessions in his life ! One Columbus Ohio, Me and my band went in our leathers, soon as we walked in he locked eyes on me ! He knew I was the guitar player, with my long blonde hair ! Meeting him and getting his autograph is , to this day! A priceless memory ! That and partying with AC DC on their tour bus 👍
I doubt that's true. Unless the other one was in Austin Texas in 91. He started the NMT tour here "his last tour " and went to Tower Records on Guadalupe after he told the show so everyone was there.. they had to stop after 5 minutes cause the crowd was so packed the windows were bowing in they let 5 ppl at a time in I was in the next group to go in pressed against the glass the terror in the employees faces as they saw the windows bowing in had me worried myself they were about 12 ft tall if I'd of gone through it might of been my end

The Palladium doesn’t even exist anymore, demolished in order to build a twelve-story residence hall that students of NYU affectionately referred to as “Palladium Hall”. It’s a shame, it was an amazing room for bands.

I was at this concert. It was my 20th birthday. Motorhead opened . My ears rang for 2 days after, but a great show. The one thing I remember is that behind us, some jackass lit his seat and the seat next to him on fire. I never saw a person get such a beatdown in my life. The fire was put out in a matter of maybe 10 seconds, and the bouncers beat this guy almost to death, which was a great thing for all involved. A very memorable night. Ozzy and his white-fringed jacket!!!

When I was in high school in the mid to late 80s Randy had already made it it to a sort of sainthood with we metal heads already. Words fail me now as I watch a master at his craft. I just sit back and smile.

I was there , I was 17 years old, they did 2 shows that night,one at 8 p.m. & one at midnight with Motorhead as backup..., I saw both shows that night,& I was tripping on mescaline....One of the Best nights of my life...
