Gamer Gate Explained and My Views

  • I describe my findings into gamer gate. I try to explain what has caused this through what I have found to be true and not just conjecture or hear say. I talk about the corruption of the video game journalism industry and paid for views.
I explain that the main stream media has only picked up on the obvious news headline of death threats to females in the industry.
I explain my thoughts on gamer gate and it's impact on the gaming industry.
I don't go into detail of who said what as there is too much to explain and it ultimately only serves to degrade the outside opinion of the video games industry

This is a very nice summary, thanks. Liked that you put it all into a point form.

Keep in mind, that if you ask 10,000 people that believe anything strongly about that issue while giving them anonymity... and then cherry pick those responses for the most hateful comments possible... you will almost certainly get "several" exceptionally hateful comments.
It doesn't matter which group of people you ask. So long as they have strong opinions and are granted anonymity... there are going to be some nasty comments in there.
Ever seen the "man on the street" polls? Its a favorite trope in talkshows. They'll send a man to walk around on the sidewalk in front of the studio and ask people that walk by some question. Then what they do is edit out all the boring answers which are typically correct. Instead, they'll only show answers that are entertaining because the person is hamming it up for the camera or embarrassing because the person got the question wrong. For example, they might ask people on the street the name of the president of the United States. Seems a really easy question but if you ask a lot of people that question... someone is going to get it wrong because they're ignorant or rendered senseless by being on TV. Those are the only people that get shown. And if you want to make life a bit easier on yourself, you'll ask a slightly harder question so you get more wrong answers. Its an old gag. And cherry picking responses to these people by only looking at the hateful comments is really the same thing.
Just because 1 in 100 people says something inappropriate isn't much of a reflection on the other 99 people. To make matters more absurd in the gamergate movement, the ratio is much higher then 1 to 100. It is closer to 1 to 1000 for hateful comments and closer to 1 to 10,000 for the death threat comments. Keep in mind that any frustrated 10 year old could be throwing out a death threat. They're not especially meaningful. No one takes these death threats seriously. Not the FBI. Not the police. Not men that receive them. And the women receiving the death threats clearly don't take them seriously either. They don't bother reporting them to the police or FBI. They immediately broadcast them to the media in direct contradiction to what the police ask them to do. And they usually do keep pre-scheduled speaking engagements despite receiving death threats. No one takes the threats seriously. Everyone knows they're just meaningless threats of zero substance. Not ONCE has any of these threats led to a physical manifestation of violence against any of these people. Not once.

Some really good points here, it seems the minority views are getting the most attention and the industry as a whole is getting a bad name

    • @diogenes848
      @diogenes848 10 років тому +3

      Acrylic Pixel
It isn't even a minority view though.
By that logic, cannibalism is a minority view. Pedophilia is a minority view.
These people that the media keeps giving attention don't represent anything. They're not the GG movement at ALL. To the contrary, GG has these anti harassment goon squads that are trolling all the social networks looking for anyone harassing. And then those voices are reported to the authorities, directly denounced, and then dog piled.
Name another movement in internet history that has taken such a strong stance against harassment? Ever?
What you're seeing is unprecedented on the internet. And the media's attempt to say this is all about death threats is attributable to what we all know as media bias... and just as bad laziness. They're not interviewing us. They're not joining our social networks. They're not talking to us.
And yet they presume to report upon us. It is beyond absurd.
The thing is the opposition keeps escalating and doubling down.
This started as a complaint against media bias with some stuff about Zoe as well which was more a QUESTION then anything else.
Then they escalated by locking all posts and censoring sanitizing all the sites and all the forums. Even 4Chan was sanitized.
      That was the first escalation.
This enraged many and the pervasiveness of it forced people to create BRAND NEW forums just to have this discussion. Which now included the mass censorship as a primary contention.
Then they responded by coming out with a coordinated series of articles through their Games Journos Pros board denouncing everyone complaining and calling them all bigots.
      That was the second escalation.
This forced gamers to respond with "not your shield" the youtube video that features lots of women, people of many ethnicities, and gender identifications all saying that the social activists do not speak for them. Furthermore, it got a lot of people that weren't paying attention to the issue in the gamer community to notice because prior to those articles most of us weren't even paying attention. I personally didn't notice until those articles. It also spawned many youtube channels that ultimately became about NOTHING but this issue. Somewhere in here Adam Baldwin came in and coined the term GamerGate... and thus what was before a lot of uncoordinated action became GamerGate.
This was basically a knock out punch in the gamer community. The journalists LOST at this point in our community. It was over.
      So they escalated again.
This time they took it to the mainstream media. It went on MSNBC, CNN, BBC, NY Times, etc. And the stories were as usual one sided basically asking Anita etc what they think and then calling that "reporting".
This is when the emails to sponsors really started happening with urgency. Some of it was going on before but at this point it bumped up again. Also we started getting support from other communities that have come under attack from these sorts of people. We have gotten support from the atheist community that suffered something called "Atheism Plus". The concept there being that you had to be more then an atheist to be an atheist. You also had to ascribe to a specific type of feminism, ablism, aspects of communism, etc. We got support from other factions of feminism that don't support this stuff.
This is when we learned what we were dealing with was "third wave sex negative Marxist feminism." Does that sound like something the gamers came up with? We didn't. This is what the feminists told us we were dealing with. And they also think these people are idiots.
We've also linked up with the Comic book people to some extent that are under attack as well. We've gotten some support from political factions which is a little difficult because many of us don't support those politics. But then again... we'll take whatever we can get if the left wing isn't going to help us. Many of us are left wing. But we're being ignored, called hateful names by bigots, and all our cries for help are being ignored by the left.
They keep doubling down and escalating.
And now something that wasn't anything has turned into an identifiable political cause. People are forming social bonds on this thing. People are grouping up and self identifying with it.
Friendships are being lost and created.
This is having an effect on a lot of people.
And we're not going to go away or stop. It has gone too far. They have escalated too much. Some of these publications have earned themselves life long animosity from people that will NEVER forgive them. Ever.
Is this going to transition into violence? No. That isn't our way. But we're going to make sure their reputation is worthless in our sphere. That is what we can do and what we will do.
And let me finish with this because it has to be said:
Anita is a con artist. She got a kickstarter for 160 thousand dollars to buy games so she could study them. She contradicts herself all the time saying she is a life long gamer in some videos and then in others says she didn't play games before doing the study. She has also come out with NO videos since collecting the 160 thousand dollars. The money was so she could buy games and video equipment to make the videos. She hasn't done any of it. The only videos she has were released BEFORE the kick starter and they featured unattributed video from other youtubers that she copied. On Stephen Colbert's show he asked her to name THREE video games. She could only manage one. Grand Theft Auto. My mother of 56 that has pretty much never played a video game could have named that one.
Zoe Quinn is also a similar type of schemer in that she has ADMITTED to sleeping with these journalists to get favor. She has outright admitted it. Not inferred or deduced. Directly admitted it. And she is currently getting about 3600 USD per month in patreon money simply for being the victim. The longer this goes on and the longer morons think she's a victim, the longer she makes more money then most people working really hard... doing nothing.
Brianna Wu is likely literally crazy. I actually feel somewhat sorry for her. She is trying to emulate Anita and Zoe and trying to get them to share the stage with her. They are outright ignoring her despite the fact that she tweets at them constantly. They never respond. Brianna is rich so I don't think she cares about the money. That said she did get 12k (she asked for 5k) in kickstarter money to port her game to PC and that was a year ago... she has not ported the game yet.
So just to be clear... con artists. And I am not singling these people out because they have vaginas. I am singling them out because they're liars. There is a difference.

Diogenes Well said. It is important to note those folks brought gender and race into all of this due to terrible "research" and self-promotion. And he doesn't find any issue with the MSM reporting what they did, that's retarded. THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO DIG DEEPER.

because it involves gamers and the suffix -gate is common for scandals. Feminism got involved because the corrupt media outlets are using the fact a female was a key figure in the original scandal to set up as a deflection.
The feminism angle was enhances as game developer Brianna Wu started harassing people and crying victim when she got backlash. Then famed lier Anita Sarkeesian stepped in and started pushing the agenda even further.

The question we should be asking is not who is right or wrong but why did GamerGate happen in the first place. I realy think its because games journalism on a whole has drop the ball, been mismanaged and has been co-opted by special interest groups and holds their own readership in contempt

I have noticed this so called "#gamergate" issue has some drawn some attention as of late. I would like to state that I am not saying this issue does not deserve attention, however the real "#gamergate" issue isn't about a bunch of misogynistic jerks/self righteous self serving media. The true "#gamergate" issue is the epidemic of cheats in all competetive multiplayer PS games. Of course when I say cheats I am referring to what some ignorant people have incorrectly labelled mods, hacks, advancements etc. The term "cheats" was coined in the late 1980's early 1990's with the creation of the game genie cheat machine. This machine allowed lesser players to handicap their gameplay with the use of cheats. Much like a novice golfer would with handicap strokes in golf. The reality of the situation however is the cheating in Video games has reached epidemic proportions and are found in every single competitive multiplayer Playstation game. This has caused the multiplayer leaderboards stats to become worthless. The multiplayer leaderboard now only serves to tell you who has been cheating others the most and succesfully. These cheaters numbers and competitive multiplayer stats are worthless as they only signify that they were clearly the most succesful cheaters. G4EG stands for Gamers 4 Ethical Gaming let us the legitimate gamers stand against the masses of cheating noobs who have fooled themselves into thinking they are gamers of value or merit. #CheatsEqualNoviceGamers #Gamergate

I literally never heard of gamer gate until I stumbled across this video. Glad I stay away from mainstream media.
Anyhow, who cares about Zoey Quinn and her corrupted journalism? You can't trust reviews anymore *(unless you're able to find the time and investigate the reviewer to see if they even bought the game or if their account was created on the day of reviewing)* , and if you're late to that fact, sorry breh.
Let's Plays and demos are more reliable than this review bullshit. IGN should've already been proof that reviews are sketchy but nah. Nah bruh nah: Nobody caught on. Nope. Y'all thought it was just limited to IGN. Now this "gamergate", lawd.
I 'spose now you're gonna claim it's limited to gamergate. But after this statement, it's gonna be claimed that corruption is limited to gamergate and IGN - Ooooooooo **wiggles hands** We got ourselves some intellectuals!
But unfortunately it's everywhere that there's reviews. It's not limited to game reviews either. It's common knowledge but it's easy to forget when the power of lazy is stronger than the power of critical thinking.

If the few assholes who are gathering an inordinate amount of attention around this "controversy" would never were assholes about it in the first place then yes we'd have a much better discourse about ethics and journalism...
We might still have that reasonable conversation if they stopped totay.
hell we might even realize that this isn't just concerning ethics in videogames journalism but is an issue with just about every subject covered by journalism.
Although I'm kind of puzzled why a game developer's sexual relationship with a games journalist was one of the catalysts that blew this up a few months ago and not the more mundane gifts for reviews examples of ethical misbehavior that has been going on for years apparently.
"And so... you can have these arguments; they are worth having.
What should our art look like?
Should our art include the category of things we traditionally call videogames?
I would argue that they should.
But if you want to disagree with Roger Ebert.
If you want to win the argument; that videogames should be considered art.
You necessarily have to let other artists into the mix
You necessarily have to let other kinds of criticism into the mix.
So when feminists critique Michael Bay movies you don't get gamergate...
What You get is people being like "ugh, it's happening again." and then lots of people watch Michael Bay movies.
    When feminists critique videogames...
What you get is you get is GamerGate.
    And that is the problem.
That's the whole circle of the problem is that the people who believe that this is their identity and these publications belong to them...
are refusing to understand and they're refusing to accept; that, that circle should get wider."
Art also changes new genres of games will come out... but that doesn't necessarily threaten existing categories of games at all.

    • @michaeltariga5285

EverNumb The reason why a game developers sexual relationship with a games journalist was one of the catalyst is because that same game developer has been garnering positive reviews from that journalist(s). Also that game developer has been feeding those same journalists that she had sex with slanders and malicious information against any rival developers or people whom she deemed to be a threat to her.
If that is not an obvious sign of corruption in gaming journalism then I dont know what it is. I am just glad that gamergate has blown over and these corrupt developers and game journalists lives and carreers are over, the same way they have destroyed the lives of other developers too.

Yeah it took a vicious post outing private correspondence to focus people on "games journalism ethics" there was at least one event that could have rallied people around the issue... but for some reason, it wasn't quite salacious enough... maybe it's fine dining to you but it smells like excrement to me...

    • @michaeltariga5285

EverNumb Everyone knows it is not going to be pretty man. On my part I also hated the negative vibes both sides are emanating, but for me it is a necessary step for gamers to stand up against the media and what these people consider as honest reporting. It is been too long and too obvious that the gaming media is corrupt but nothing is being done since everything is covered up by the gaming media and its stooges. It is so corrupt that the journalists tried their best to remove all discussions on forums and boards, using their friend moderators to halt the discussions of gamergate when it is in its infancy in an attempt to silence the truth of their biased reporting and spreading hate to garner funds to their own patreons. Trust me, I was there and it is really really an outrage to see that these journalists are trying to cover up their own shit. Remember these are the same gaming journalists who advocate free speech and bringing light to the truth.
GamerGate is the first time it is exposed how biased and corrupt these gaming journalists are and I am glad that the can of worms has been opened no matter how foul looking and smelling it is.

    • @EverNumb
      @EverNumb 9 років тому

      Mighty Roogna
Sure it's not going to be pretty but sorry if it was only about Ethics for everyone then when the person who didn't give Kane and Lynch a good enough score separated from gamespot under dubious circumstance... where was the outrage then? Wasn't that an outrageous enough example of an exchange for a review since Kane and Lynch was heavily advertised on gamespot and when it didn't get a 9 or a 10 the reviewer didn't stay on with the company?
      It should have been.
As I said it wasn't salacious enough. Now there is outrage and it's also because there's "allegedly" (I say that because unless people are deposed in court I doubt anyone except a couple of people will really know) a sex for review scandal.
Sorry, I can't get behind it. The ugliness isn't just "journos" or "SJW"s it's all over the place in this "controversy"
Sure criticize shady journalism where-ever you find it but realize that it's not just this segment of journalism but journalists who cover a lot of other areas... areas that, despite the fact that I like videogames more than politics, will impact me more than how honest games journalists are....
It is quite unfortunate that feminists criticisms of video-games is conflated (many times justly sometimes not) with journalism ethics.
~btw, the best summary I have found about how this happened was posted online as "A 'neutral' manplains Gamergate, Social Justice, and Radical Feminism" ~
I say unfortunate because as I noted above there was a real issue of game journalism lacking in ethics that could have been a point of reform years ago and also because while there are unfounded criticisms of art from feminists sometimes they are not entirely wrong either....
Additionally fears about certain types of games being no longer made or changed beyond all recognition are unfounded...
After all feminists also criticize "violent" "misogynistic" action movies yet I can still find an action movie being shown at my local multi-plex all seasons of the year. Music also has faced criticisms... efforts to ban them failed despite the explicit lyric warnings which are just another version of the movie ratings system.
As you said it is ugly.... however, it didn't have to be... not at all.
And it's unfortunate because reasonable people who try to have reasonable discussions have the shadows of the trolls (I'm talking about Anti-GG trolls, GG trolls, and trolls who have no real interest in any side other than keeping the discourse ugly) always hanging over them.
