Yup. The two main stages of any technology are 1) New, exciting, interesting ⇒ unreliable, complicated, flaky. 2) Reliable, commonplace, easy to use ⇒ old, boring, uninteresting.
6:18 No, the facets were not “smoothed over”. Instead, a trick called “Phong shading” was invented, to make faceted geometry look smooth, while still actually remaining faceted. Go look it up.
2:26 If you are wondering why the image is flickering, this was what was known as a “calligraphic” display. That means the electron beam is tracing out the lines of the image directly, not scanning a raster like in the CRT in the older TVs and computer monitors that you might be familiar with. This meant there was a maximum limit to the complexity of the image, since the more lines that had to be drawn, the longer it would take to draw them, until the flicker became intolerable.
I once worked as a production tech for medical equipment that drew the display on a CRT using that same method of 'drawing'. Had to adjust the yoke on the CRT as part of the production process.
Don't forget "Tron," and also the Genesis device scene from "Start Trek II: The Wrath of Khan." That scene on ST was created by a company called Pixar.
@XanderX84 actually some guy actually set out to do just that couple of years back, independent on a mac, dont know if he finished, but i saw part of it and it was not bad
i don't think that only one person can create an animated film because the collective ideas of a group of people is what makes film so interesting. Then again, a novel is interesting and it is only the creativity of one person, so i may stand corrected.
@Neuroplasm I can't find any info on it anywhere? Are you sure it's called this? I really to use this as a reference for an essay I'm writing, but I'll have to use the original name and broadcaster.
No mainstream feature animated film can ever be made by a single person. It just cannot happen. As is a modern day CGI film takes around five or six years to make and HUNDREDS of artists and animators.
2:06 lel, they only draw lines, booooooring! *takes the sketchpad, draws anime , and i say to the 19s people- THIS IS HOW ITS DONE U LITTLE B!CHES! * xDDDD (please dont think its rasist, its just a jk)
The nostalgia has worn off, what's so great about some cheap animated pos movie? That's not progress, it's just an el cheapo excuse for not hiring real artists.
Narrator: "The most stunning images the world has ever seen"
Video: Will Smith dancing as a fish in Shark Tale

I've always wondered why some of the Autodesk tutorials seemed so obsessed with teapots.
The Utah Teapot was one of the first solid modeled shapes during Ed Catmull's time at the University of Utah, and its become a meme since.

I love how they choose Shark Tale as an example for "beautiful animation"

Who else is here from the edx course?
+Hermos i am!
may i ask which course?
CSE167x Computer Graphics
+1
Did anyone else in this course notice that the guy in the video said that the wall colour was blue when it was actually purple?
Thank you for sharing this, It is very informative and interesting. I enjoyed watching it.
this is amazing to see...how far we have come in Computer Graphics
It's come a long way since this was made.
Yeah, now even videogames look better than 2005 CGI
@XanderX84 actually some guy actually set out to do just that couple of years back, independent on a mac, dont know if he finished, but i saw part of it and it was not bad
That stuff around the 4 minute mark is amazing, it's like an early version of Flash.
@SonAvitch An interresting detail is that nvidia used the background of that video in one of their opengl shader demo's
Do you have the original source for this? I need to know the year it was made? This is for my film project at college. Thanks!
Danke, sehr spannende Doku!
The 1982 Disney movie Tron was one of the first films to ever use computer graphics.
There's a delay on the audio, but it's still fascinating! Thanks!
i'm watching this while i'm animating on flash lmao

I love that the narration doesn't add up.

Hey man, thanks for uploading the video. Do you know when this documentary came out? (It's kind of important that I know this - [project]).
Have you seen the short film 'Rosa' which is full CGI and was made solely by a young animator on his spare time?
hey im doing a rather thorough research paper on the origins computer animation. could you tell me where you got these clips from? thanks.
@XanderX84
You can never underestimate the power of one person. Be cautious, yes, but never dismiss the idea.
I wish I can see the. Whole inter behind the scenes of old film not just short clips
2020, who?
✌
2021
and I also wish that I can see behind the scenes of old games
@Neuroplasm any idea where i can download the full version? cheers
where can i get this documentary? google wont help me...:(
whats the original name, so can find the unedited version
Just mind blowing
How do you spell that theat lux thing, I really want to watch it
One animator to make a full length CGI movie!? I don't think so!
please who has an idea what website or book where i can get the history of computer generated imagery or animation. its for a term paper
Did you have any luck finding sources? I've got to write a paper too

Maybe not an entire full feature film but a simple short film I believe would be possible.
+Erin Frost Yes, it wouldn't be. Maybe if the fucker had superpowers, but that won't happen.
There was a guy who made one all by himself in 8 years
where is mr whitney in this doc?
why is this on 240p?
The Prequels, Gods of Egypt and X-Men's Apocalypse flashy colorful backgrounds say hello.
Maybe that's why Autodesk 3ds max use a tea port cuz it was the first object in the 3d world ...
And 4 decades ago - Even TRON was impossible to make!
Thanks. Very useful for our talk.
how can you show the evolution of cg at 240p??
@wolfs17 Yeah i always asked my self why a tea port why not a table !
V A P O R W A V E
Hell yeah Shark Tale baby!!!
Is that a Klingon with glasses typing at a computer terminal at 8:08?
the sync is a bit off...
Is Hunger the Troll Face?
Nice! thanks for sharing
3:57 the first flash animation! lol
I found you on random old video
well not the whole movie, but once they had all the models and shading software they could make all of the images for it.
Awesome.
0:19 best looking movie
Ravi Ramamoorthi sent me here!
2018?
I feel inadequate.
Haha, Turbo Teen's father @ 4:10 :D
EdX from computer games design
I quit watching this when he said "In the mid 1970's before the dawn of the microchip"
pon2oon I thought the microchip was invented in the early 70s. I still could be off 🤔
Oh nevermind you've already said thanks!
In the future
yea =)
0:35 BULLSHIT.

Agne Stukaite ...
Why should that be racist?
I hate the term, "boffin".
cgi animated films still ever since Toy Story still looks clumsy an lack the charm of traditional hand drawn animation.
why does everyone say teaot and this all has to do with clcokwork in roblox lol XD jk
The nostalgia has worn off, what's so great about some cheap animated pos movie? That's not progress, it's just an el cheapo excuse for not hiring real artists.
terrible voiceover
