      Thanks for your comments and subscription... this was such a great project as far as saving money and creating a useful space, my wife and i just love it.... its funny, the deck above it doesnt get much use because of the sun, we have an umbrella and a patio table up there and rarely use it..... so in our estimation it was really worth it, Mike

    First, thanks for putting these videos up. I just got back from Menard's with my steel panels and other supplies to do the same thing. My question in this video is why did you need the thin foam gasket things that you put the wax paper over the sticky? Does that keep the panels from making noise in the wind? Mine is inside a screened in porch, so I'm thinking I won't need them.

    • @michaelmason636
      @michaelmason636  6 років тому

      SORRY IT TOOK SO LONG TO REPLY....The foam was mostly used as a moisture and bug preventer, and of course above my panels is a full deck, and thru that deck i get lots of moisture from the rain, hope this helps and thanks for watching

    Hi Michael - very helpful video and a great job. Two questions and may be they are connected. What approach did you use to insure you had proper drainage to the gutter. Second - with the boards you installed to screw the panels in to, doesn't that inhibit or block the drainage??

    • @michaelmason636
      @michaelmason636  5 років тому +1

      For proper drainage, if i can describe it ?......most of these boards i custom cut and they were all from the door wall where the first board was installed, its thickness was 1/2", 1 foot away, the next one was 5/8" thick, the next one was 3/4" etc... till i got up to an inch and a quarter thick, this created the pitch that was necessary to make the water flow to the 2X12 where i hung my gutter. As for the boards inhibiting the flow all i can say is if you look closely at the panels they are in a zig zag pattern, creating a flat V at each end every time it goes up and down, so as the board goes across the panel there is about an inch and a quarter or one inch space that the water goes in or under the board, creating the flow necessary to drain the water, i think to imagine this just think of the flat wood going across a zig zag pattern. This leaves a space for the water. I did have people ask me if i thought that was enough room for the water, i replied, even if its not the water will just build up and go over the top of the board, then when there is less flow it will just continue underneath the board. Hope this answers your questions, and again, my rational has always been even if it only last 5 or 6 years, i could do the whole job over again 4 times before i would even come close to the price of Timbertechs underdeckment. Hope this helps, and good luck with your project!!!! Mike+

      Thank you very much Michael - I have a 16 X 16 and hope to tackle this over the week of 4th of July. I think I've got it figured out and your video was extremely helpful. Like you, I'm purchasing my materials from Menards.

      @@tomharmening4384 Menards was great... you could order the panels in the exact size...within reason. and they even had the color matching screws you could buy.... Good luck on your project, i am glad i could help provide a visual guide for you!!

    GREAT video Mike. I plan on doing the same thing next month. A couple questions for you...it looks like you have color matched gutters. Did you have to special those from Menards too? Roughly how far away from your house is the end of your deck? The wood braces that you used to create the proper drainage...did you use pressure treated wood? How far apart did you make these? Oh...and how did you determine how many screws to use? I am at a loss on how many I need to special order. Thanks again!

    • @michaelmason636
      @michaelmason636  5 років тому +1

      Okay, in answer to your questions...1 the gutters were stock at menards, bought them right off the shelf...2 the distance between my house and the gutter is approxiamately 11'-6".....3 yes, i did use pressure treated lumber, i cut a couple of pressure treated 2x4's length wise to the appropriate sizes.... 4..they were about 2' apart approximately, it might have been 18" and the thickness i cut started at 1/2"

    Do you get condensation (sweating) ever ?

    • @pipefittermike636
      @pipefittermike636 Рік тому

      have never seen any condensation.. but the deck boards above have 1/8 inch slots every 10-12", And as you can see at the front is my gutters that are open to the atmospere, so thats probably why no condensation. I have stated before in my comments that even if this stuff doesnt work out and something happens to the individual pieces, it is so cheap to replace, it would take me replacing the whole project 3 times to get to the price of the legitimate underdeckment. Hope this helps, i loved this project, i saved tons of money, thanks for commenting, liking, and subscribing, i appreciate it, Pipefittermike

    Now that it’s been up a while, have you had any leaks? I’m going to do this to my deck. I’ve been debating if the panels should go upside-down, so the water is traveling on the surface it normally does. I’m convinced it will work this way if you haven’t had leaks yet

    • @pipefittermike636
      @pipefittermike636 2 роки тому

      oh yeah..... no leaks anywhere, and its been 8 years, i really thought the snow and ice would get it but no, i wasnt to worried cause i always thought if it all screwed up i would replace it anyway, it was 5x less tthan the brand name underlayment..... hope this helps.

      forgot to mention, make sure you use the screws that go with the siding, they have a small metal washer with a small rubber washer, i am sure that prevents leakage, depending on your area, you will probably put in hundreds of these screws..... good luck with your project....Mike

    Very nice, clean work.
    Isen’t that roofing panel up side down? I understand the finished side looks nice, but the channels seem small when used this way. Have you had any issues with debris damming up behind the wood strips you used to attach to?
    I ask because I am working out the plans to do this to my deck. Thanks

      Hey, thanks for you comment and liking and subscribing, i appreciate it.... in answer to your question....no not a stich of heavy or even small debris, but you have to remember the decking up top only allows about 6 or 7 1/8" by 3/8" weep holes so only a really small piece of debris can get in there.... where i installed the gutters at the end away from the house, out the rain chain gutter i made i have only found the small be be's that comes off my shingles occasionally from a large rain or wind storm, other than that the occasional small dead bug or dead wasp etc, is all i have found... and thats about alll that fits in that hole, if you would like me to send a video of the weep holes and the gutter just leave your email address or send it to mine which is masons2go@yahoo.com and i will reply with the video or email your phone and i will text you the vid, good luck on your project i am glad you could glean something from my videos..!!! Sorry so long to reply..... but if you wish to watch part three of this series it does show a basic understanding to how they are already installed, you can see the gutter hangers in the video and the whole install is easy, just make sure it is pitched to where you want to drain all the water..... the guys at Menards and homedepot are real knowledgeable how this stuff goes together, they will be happy to help you, hope this helps and here is the link to part 03 of this video that shows the gutters.....ua-cam.com/video/4AXSexdECEo/v-deo.html

    I’m so glad I just watched the tail end where you mentioned being able to see the lip, and wished you’d installed it the other way. That’s something that would have bothered me, so I’m thankful for your advice. Turned out great looking.
    I only wonder if you gave it enough slope to handle settling water? Any issues yet?

    • @michaelmason636
      @michaelmason636  5 років тому

      No issues at all.....in fact i was worried that the water would get trapped in there and freeze during the winter..... never happened and to this day i look in there thru the cracks in the deck board on the above deck and i dont see anything in there..... i once summized to myself that if something did happened i could replace it for the original cost or above a little and still be installing cheaper a second time instead of using the brand name underdeckment..... if you do some careful planning i am sure it will turn out beautifully.... we love ours and wouldnt change a thing...(except for that lip of course, LOL). Thanks for commenting, subscribing and liking, i really do appreciate it, good luck, Mike
