Not a “western”. It’s a Civil War movie set in Tennessee and Mississippi which isn’t that far west although it was in the “Western Theater “ of the Civil War. Still it is one of my favorite John Wayne movies in spite of historical inaccuracies as to uniforms and equipment. It’s loosely based on Grierson’s Raid in 1863. One inaccuracy is that Andersonville Prison didn’t open until 1864. POWs in 1863 were still exchanged. When Vicksburg surrendered, the garrison was paroled and spent the rest of the summer in parole camps. They returned to duty in time for the Chattanooga campaign that autumn and the Atlanta campaign the next year. Grant noted that many of the prisoners he captured at Vicksburg had also been captured at Ft Donelson in 1862. He was getting tired of capturing the same men again and again. That was one reason the exchange system broke down by 1864 resulting in Andersonville.

Director John Ford was notably sentimental about the actors and crew who had worked with him over the years in his film 'family.' Among these was an old stunt man and western wrangler, Fred Kennedy. Against his better judgment, Ford gave Kennedy a stunt ride in "The Horse Soldiers." Kennedy's horse fell, breaking the old actor's neck. The scene was retained in the final cut. But Ford was broken-hearted with guilt
The screenplay was written to follow them to Baton Rouge rather than end movie at bridge, but due to Ford being devastated at Fred's death, he finished it there.
@@DH.2016 Actually, in the scene where Wayne is discussing their movements with his officers, he reveals they are not going back north after destroying Newton Station, but proceed to join up with Union Forces at Baton Rouge.

While this was directed by John Ford, it simply isn’t the best John Wayne western. Ford directed The Searchers as well and it makes this movie feel almost formulaic by comparison. Three years earlier The Searchers had everything: a superior script, greater supporting cast, and iconic cinematic shots. It stands as an example to be taught in film schools world wide. In it, the Duke isn’t really a wholly sympathetic character. Playing against type really made him loom larger than usual. When UA-cam contributors make outlandish or unsupportable claims (clickbait) it’s usually to sell something or push individual taste. Go watch the Searchers and you will understand why this is true.
The Horse Soldiers 1959. During the Civil War, Colonel John Marlowe (John Wayne) is tasked with leading a Union cavalry division to raze a Confederate railroad depot. Marlowe faces further challenges as a result of his frequent disagreements with the regiment's surgeon, Major Henry Kendall (William Holden), and the presence of Miss Hannah Hunter (Constance Towers), a Southern belle who overhears Marlowe's secret plans and is brought along to prevent her from spreading the word.
FYI, Ken Curtis, Denver Pyle, Hank Worden, and Jack Fennick (the Sgt. Major in the beginning) were all in Waynes' THE ALAMO. If I left a few out, sorry about that.
John Wayne's best American Civil war film...... An immediate historical note btw near the start they talk about Andersonville Prison. That did not come into existance till February of 1864. And by the end of the film they had mentioned Andersonville about 20 times..... Just to clarify this film is about Grierson's raid which took place in April to May of 1863. At that point no Andersonville. In that point in the war the Union and the Confederacy were still exchanging prisoners so, Henry Kendall, will be home by early Autumn if not late summer.

There are several great Ford Wayne movies, Stagecoach, They were Expendable, Red River, the cavalry trilogy, (Rio Grande, She wore a Yellow Ribbon, Fort Apache), Quiet Man (another one of my favorites). A good rule of thumb is that - save for one, maybe 2 exceptions - anything he made before 1939 is junk churned
out by small studios, aimed at 10 year olds. However, in one of them he was the first singing cowboy in movie history,
it was awful. By the way, the Duke would be the 1st to agree with me.
21:48 Great way to contaminate their drinking water. Smart doctor!😂

One of my favorite Ford flicks, even if there are a few cheesy parts. I heard though that it wasn’t that successful, may have lost money. There are several great Ford Wayne movies, Stagecoach, They were Expendable, Red River, the cavalry trilogy, (Rio Grande, She wore a Yellow Ribbon, Fort Apache), Quiet Man (another one of my favorites). Oh yeah, the Searchers! But my favorite western from that era was Shane. I never cared for his politics though for a guy who avoided military service during WW2 when other top actors went to serve, was kind of like a certain slob with feet problems going to occupy the White House who talks big but made sure he didn’t serve.
Great movie, actually, I enjoyed it a lot when I was a teenager (now, I'm 67).😂
Great movie, but not a western, it’s all on the east side of the Mississippi.
Considering they are in enemy territory they make plenty of noise with their mobile choir lol, Dennis
De las mejores peli.del Oeste ❤❤❤
Macho man. You are the answer
Too many adverts (no I wont pay to stop them) so watched it elsewhere ad free
Use brave browser as it has ad blocker.
In reality John Wayne never would have fought in the Civil War.
The coward avoided all wars off screen.
He was in his 30's when he would have been called, a bit old technically. He also had a family and several children by then.
Gee a Few Smart Folk can tell the Difference between a Western & Civil War Movie 🎬
Who Care's , it's a John Wayne Flick ..
"Der Letzte Befehl"!
Por favor se podría subir a Yotuve en Castellano?
More of a war movie than a western (it's actually set in the Southeast) but a great film anyways.
Miss Hunter is a Gr8 Look'in Southern Belle ... Yes Mame 😅
