It’s a tragedy of our copyright system when a channel like this one that does nothing but INCREASE interest and sales in classic recordings gets copyright blocked or demonetized. There should be a better way of recognizing ACTUAL fair use.
Fair use, but the bureaucracy
Yeah if anything the music company should be loving this guy's channel, because it makes people that maybe missed it, or heard it and forgot about it, want these albums n songs
I don't follow the logic, companies spend millions (if not bollions) of the music bying peoples revenue on commercials but when someone points the same crowd on their artists for free, they lauch copywrong claims. It's not the record companies that are paying you, it's the viewers, either by add revenue or by monthly subscriptions. So they don't loose any dough. The only thing they could claim is that you are making money of other peoples work. But even that is nonsense. You do the analysis, you point out the brilliance of their work, you make your audience appreciate, what they didn't before, or appreciate what they allready appreciated in a whole new manner. They should put you on a shield. They should cherish your efforts and there could be a claim made that they should enlist you. If I had a record company I would love a dude like you on my side. If I was the industry, I would like that too. This is such a weird world we live in. Who gave the industry all that power over the consumer? And who will return it to us?
Almost after every video I watch from his I’ll either go listen to the original album and/or song it just gets me in the mood for that artist
It's ABSOLUTELY insane how labels and other copyright right sharks absolutely refuse to see this. It's literally just free press. If anything, vids will only draw more attention to your content and boost streams, engagement and maybe even physical purchases etc.
Digging the Greats is some of the best content on the internet. I appreciate all the hard work you put into your videos. Patreon, here I come!
Can’t wait to say what’s up over there 🔥 make sure and download the phone app - super slick experience

The sad irony is, I've bought a dozen or so albums in the past year because of your breakdown videos. Your love of the music is very infectious and it's a shame the lawyers can't see you're helping the artists they represent.
Hope this awful copyright situation can be sorted out for educational channels like yours
This fight has been going on for more than a decade. It's not likely anything will change sadly
We need to revamp copyright laws their stupid as written down. They're literally stopping history from being taught in the guise of protecting the creators work. It's an oxymoron at this point the best to hear about Marvin Gaye is talk about him and not hear his music. Because the topic of video about the musicians or any works outside should be able to within reason be played or seen. We're not talking full length songs we're talking 15-30 sec clips with context and at times transformed from the original work. But it will never change as long as maximum profit is the ideal. Not the longevity or historical meaning behind it.
@@holdenhurdle8831 stuff like this will never change because it doesn’t benefit the pockets of those near the top of the food chain unfortunately (edit: you’re right about it needing a revamp though)
It will never will, this has been an issue for last several years;. The shortsightedness of label company is just crazy, can't wait for the new generation of music talent render them useless. The fact UA-cam is working hard to drive creators away is also a mistake but they are so big, so they don't give a fxxk.
Who has money to fight Disney in the courts? Because that’s who you are up against. They will not allow copyright and trademark laws to be changed.
This video started sad, but actually ended hype AF.
🔥🔥🔥
It's crazy how these labels are so quick to judge and strike you down, but your content is literally a celebration and free promotion for them.
You're doing God's work man, I really love the informative content you put out. A lot of the music you breakdown is the shit I grew up to that deserves flowers especially in this current moment. Thank you so much for all that you do!
🙏🙏
Profit. Its like drug cartels not liking when a new player starts selling merch in their hood
Hey I’m not saying I agree with the way these record companies operate, but keeping it real: Micheal Jackson doesn’t really need any promotion
@@trashyraccoon2615 but micheal and the rest of the greats! Could always use more education on their greatness! There are a lot of dumb and ignorant kids out there who won’t take to time to research mj or j dilla! So they will just take the rumors about them as fact!
Digging in the greats provide education! It’s really an AP music class!!
I support you man.
What's crazy about UA-cam copyright is it's giving music label too much power. Artist has to decide the usage of their musics and it's necessary to ask them about it.
Strong support. BUT ! You Tube meaning GOOGLE dont give labels any power, and they dont even pay artists corretcly ! And btw. its also about publishing companies plus collecting societies ASCAP etc.....
If DOOM were here today he’d call out this bs in an instant
In most cases it isn't the artist making the decision but rather the label itself. They are fiercely protecting their investment while not realizing they would make more if they just made a 50/50 split instead and accept the split as an advertising cost.
Great explanation!!!! We appreciate you, your channel, and all you do. It doesn’t go for granted or unappreciated. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you!!!!!!!!!!
🙏🙏🙏
Its so sad that legitimate education and important documenting of music is *illegally* banned by UA-cam + Record Labels. I hope you can keep doing this it's so meaningful
I appreciate the support 🙏
Just signed up. 5 quid a month seems fair and people making this sort of content need supporting. We need the next Ken Burns doing a 10 hour epic on the complete history of hip hop.
Yes 🔥 can’t wait to meet you over there!
Record labels are just stupid, youre literally helping them and they want to screw you.. You are awesome, please keep this up. real music lovers love this channel
This channel is so insanely good and it's a shame the copyright system is so broken that you have to compromise the crazy amount of work you put into these videos
The vagueness of fair use, especially with music criticism, analysis, covers, EVERYTHING is so grey, and up in the air on UA-cam. Im glad you're able to move to crowd funding with Patreon. Your breakdowns are amazing.
🙏🙏
Ironically almost all the content on early UA-cam was copyrighted material
This is self-defeating by copyright holders. People no longer listen to radio to discover music - especially older recordings. UA-cam content like Digging the Greats is a great way for us to find great music we have never heard. An 8 second clip is just a teaser and I've gone on to add many albums to my Spotify listening after watching one of your clips. Even albums that I already had as CDs but didn't listen to any more (like Madvillainy) have entered my Spotify listening. For example although I loved D'Angelo's first album, I never got into his subsequent work because there were no dancefloor fillers in them (at the time) and so much other music to enjoy. In retrospect I have (thanks to the Soulquarians breakdown) I started listening to his full discography.
I’m a 60 year old guy who loves music. I’m what I’ve always called a hybrid hippie/ punk… But I love so many genres of music. In fact as a bearer of psychedelia I’ll show you where I’m coming from musically… the 1990s were the most psychedelic decade of music…. Even more than my beloved 1960s… and part of that is due to the plethora of hip-hop in the 1990s. Your channel really touches on music that affected my life from many directions. The way you break down and explain the songs, the meanings, etc is so engaging and puts words to those feelings music lovers feel but sometimes just cant express with the right words. So seeing this video about how UA-cam & the record industry is giving you such a hard time that you are moving to Patreon (along with stay here on UA-cam with edited videos)… Well you are the channel/ creator that has finally made me go sign up with Patreon as well as joining your Patreon at the Kick-It level. I’ve been thinking about starting to play guitar again after 30 plus years so I might eventually switch to the Producers membership so I can get your bass samples to jam along with… But that’ll come with time. I’m so happy that you aren’t giving up but are getting deeper involved in creating your videos. Your videos not only show the beauty of the music but the intelligence of the artists in how they made these brilliant records. And please pat yourself on the back for being a damn good musical educator… Even to old farts like myself who knows a great deal about music but always keeps an open mind because you’re never too old to learn. And you do know how to school (and old school). Congrats again for sticking it to The Man™️. ✌🏽❤️🌬️🍃🍄
Damn that Madvillany breakdown was so crazy informative and entertaining. UA-cam is wrong for that.
This is the most informative channel for up and coming producers and people that want to learn. Always supporting you bud 👏🏼
🙏🙏
The fact that you're educating people about music, is a blessing. I wish when I was a music student in school I had a teacher like you. Keep on digging the greats 👍🏾😁👍🏾
🙏🙏🙏
Very awesome that you went through all the systems put in place the right way but you definitely need to be on Patreon, your stuff is too good and you deserve to be paid for it. If a channel was smart they'd hire you and give you your own show but this way you can control everything yourself and I'm stoked for you. We gotta support this kind of stuff in a world full of tiktok dancers and influencers pulling pranks on hard-working people in the real world.
Appreciate you 👊
More power to you, man.
I was waiting for this moment to come, like I've seen all of my favourite music channels making "worse" videos because they can't risk the copyright strike. It's honestly a moment to teach everyone about the power music labels have, and how the one man is left to fend for himself.
I can't understand UA-cam's side of the argument, when they have no protection in place for their creators. They're all about a "creator" platform when it interests them for their personal gain but then leave those same creators high and dry, when facing these issues.
I want to thank you for putting so much effort into your videos. They were a great source of knowledge, fun and made for a curious community.
It’s very frustrating, especially since UA-cam SAYS they fully support fair use. Don’t worry - you’ll still get weekly videos here on UA-cam, just the copyright clear version
It's a shame because you are right: your videos are HIGHLY enthusiastic ads for such a diverse array of music. You encourage viewers to listen more intently, seek out older artists sampled by newer artists, and connect musical threads across generations. Fair use is such a strange law because it often always sides with the copyright holders. Excited as hell for your Patreon. Keep it up.
Never in my life have I even considered the thought of giving anyone a patreon sub. But at the same time, I don't see anyone else this deserving of their fan's money. This channel is a constant discovery, and little intricacies in songs I may have missed come to life here. Many more people yet to be reached, but they will come. Huge love from Ireland man🇮🇪
UA-cam has done this to so many of my favorite creators and I'm so glad you are the first to do this Director's Cut version of Patreon. We need more creators like you!!!!
As a music creator on UA-cam I feel your pain on a deep level. So many music creators have given up on their channels for this exact reason. Record labels cant even fathom the idea that a UA-camr can make a couple bucks while using a few seconds of "their" song. Then when we finally give in and let them take our money, they block the video or take it down. This has led to interest in music as a whole declining since there aren't channels for people to come together and share their love for the art.
The craziest part about all of it is the record label's would get MORE streams/sales if they allowed UA-camrs to share the music (obviously in accordance to Fair Use).
"If you wanna skip the story and go right to the end..."
Who in the world clicks on a Digging The Greats video and SKIPS +the story+?!?
The story IS the thing w/ DTG!
😂 I appreciate you
I am with you all the way. UA-cam wants us to be dumb and unoriginal in our taste and spending.
I’ve had lots of these same copyright issues! The problem is that it’s not a level playing field… if we (UA-camrs) abuse the system we get penalised with copyright strikes, but if the record label abuse the system by handing out unjustified demonetisations, even if we then successfully dispute their claim, there is no negative repercussions for them! So the labels are fully incentivised to push their luck and squeeze as much money out of us as possible!
It’s so crazy that artists and labels harm creators who are actually helping them out by highlighting their music. SMH. I’m definitely signing up for your Patreon.
Thank you for this breakdown of all the copyright bollocks. I for one am hugely glad to have been presented a simple way to support you every month! So much gratitude to you for doing what you do !!
This bout to be the easiest Patreon sub I’ve ever done. It’s also the first but Digging the Greats is most convincing reason to download it and support you best of luck with it all 🙏🏽🐐
I appreciate you 🙏 make sure and download the app - SUPER slick experience - so excited to have our own corner of the internet 🔥
Some weeks ago I was binge-watching your videos and thinking "how this isn't a Patreon show". Registering myself right now, thank you for the videos!
Thank you 🙏 very excited for this next phase!
Man I’ve always wondered HOW you navigating this. The last escalation is always scary in terms of the owner needing to take you to court. Glad you’re on patreon now!
It's crazy indeed, I've actually bought many records on vinyl by enjoying the education you provide here because I'm digging - like many others - the Digging the Greats channel. I also appreciate that you made this announcement and will head to Patreon for sure! Keep up the great work
Your transparency is so admirable - thank you!
this channel is taking me to school every time you drop a video., content is high quality and youre a very likable person. Get it!
Love you man and I one hundred percent support everything you’ve done for the community, thank you brudda thank you!!
Man, this sucks. Love your videos and the way you dig into music.
Can imagine this takes away your motivation to continue.
Big thanks from this internet stranger for the content your made & shared!
I appreciate you 🙏 to be clear - I’ll still be here on UA-cam of course, just the copyright clear version - full DTG experience over on Patreon - excited to be able to just make great stuff without jumping through hoops
I love your effort and your craft. Thank you for sharing what you love with us
This is such an awesome channel and I'm sorry to hear of your copyright struggles. The world is insane (in many ways, this is just one of them) but I'm glad you've given us the Patreon option! I'm going to check it out!
Thanks for educating us on this page. I'll definitely be going to the Patreon
I am going to support your patreon. I appreciate what you do.
As a music lover I only found your channel this year but wow! the amount of research, history, background, and presentation is off the charts. Plus visiting, as you say, all the tracks again instantly available on streaming. I look forward to new content. I never usually subscribe to content but I’m heading over to Patreon now… it’s only the cost of a coffee per month but so much more value. All power to you man.
the work you do is genuinely so insightful and well-made and respectful, artists would probably be happy to sign-off on the work you do covering their music.
I love your work man, when I found it I felt like a kid again just wanting to hear more and more amazing stories being told in the best way ever. The Patreon sub I'm sure will be well worth it. I think Nebula would also be another good potential place to share your work but wherever it is I'll follow it!
Appreciate you 🙏 I looked into nebula too but it’s invite only so Patreon it is 🔥
yeah the Patreon is great but something like Nebula might be a better incentive for viewers, as it's a subscription for a wide range of various content creators in the edutainment. I mean even paying a small monthly fee for every creator we follow can be very expensive very rapidly.
This is such a great channel. This channel promotes music, includes showing samples, which make people to want to search out the original (sampled) artists, I had a channel back then, only uploaded previously unseen footage from different bands. Was pretty popular, but after a few years, in one day I got multiple copyright claims and basically shut down my channel. Fine. Whatever. What annoys me, seeing some of my previously uploads copied then uploaded from other people (which includes my subtle edits) and they get a lot of views... and are STILL online! I've seen a channel getting their musical box cover of a song being removed/muted because of copyright. I do respect that you are fighting just to have your videos to be seen.I hope your Patreon gets successful. Your channel is a great learning tool, to see/hear music history!
Appreciate all the work you do! I took a visit to A-1 records in NYC because of you, after living here all my life and I bought records supporting these artists. I’ve always wanted to get into MF Doom and your video sold him for me. Even music I was into before, I got so much more out of them because of your work. The Midnight Marauders video touched me specially being a queens native. I had my first kiss to D’Angelo, and the dance floor call at my wedding will start with Rock With You. I’m glad this stuff hasn’t discouraged you from creating, and i hope my comment breathes a new life into your work bro!
"For the love of money is the root of all evil"... I appreciate you brother
As long as you are making content I promise I’ll be supporting!! The passion for the music needs to be supported!
I joined ✊ really want to support your awesome work and want to see the uncut versions 😎
You might just be a first patreon I support, I absolutely love your work!! Makes me enjoy these tunes even more. Thanks for all your work, it’s a shame UA-cam doesn’t see it
Downloaded patreon asap, I’m loving these EDUCATIONAL videos, and I love hearing the samples and outcomes. Fully supporting a channel like this and your decision. Peace.
Your Music analysis and history lessons in rnb & hiphop are great, entertaining and appreciated.
I for one am happy you are on patron now because I get to support you better.
You''ve always made dope content and I'm sure it'll only get better. Much success on the new situation
Thank you for all your contents ❤️
You are one of the few channels on UA-cam that definitely deserves my patron subscription! Thanks for your content!
Just signed up! Looking forward to more great content!
Just joined your patreon bro, more than happy to be supporting your content. You stay dropping gems on quality music culture. The labels should be grateful you’re supporting quality music culture, praising, promoting their content.
Not gonna make this comment all long winded. This sucks.
You’re a legend.
I’ve never ever been one to shell out the sheckles for a creator’s Patreon, but your content is well worth the $5 a month. Keep doing what you love man.
I just want to thank you for your work. It has helped me find some of my favorite songs of all time.
Brandon! I just discovered you and this channel is amazing! It’s been too long, glad to see you sharing your love for music here! Cheers
Just signed up. Keep up what you’re doing. You’re the best! 🤩
You a real passionated man, and goes all the way to your vision. That makes you a winner. A real G. Thank you for doing what you do.
You got all my support. I wish you the best for this new chapter of your career.
Stay Blessed. Much Respect. 💎
Man, the whole copyright thing on UA-cam is a mess. Always has been - eg was non-existent to start with and now extreme. I’ve had strikes too. Dumb. Hope it gets better and I’m glad you have found Patreon to help with what you do.
I whish you the best of succes on Patreon. And look forward to keep seeing new videos on UA-cam.
We love you and your video's man!! Thank you for everything!!
Thank you for being so transparent and informative with your video. I want to do something similar with South African Hip Hop music (which is where I'm from) but the struggles you described have put me off.I don't know how to navigate it.
Great videos, good to see ur on Patreon now, Larga Vida a Digging the Greats
It's really sad what happend to you and your great work of explaining music to the people
Good luck man appreciate all your work on the videos and feel your pain dealing with copyright nonsense.
LOVE this response to the problems you've been running into, Brandon! Just went and signed up... can't wait to dig in! Is Nebula another possible arrow in the quiver for DTG? Other music channels have had good luck operating over there, so just curious if it might work for you, in addition to the Patreon.
It's truly a shame that UA-cam's Fair Use system is such a mess, and inherently weighted towards the labels. Google really needs to find a way to side with creators who are clearly operating within legitimately creative, Fair Use boundaries, while still keeping labels happy. It's almost certainly going to take some big, risky, landmark lawsuit to start to change the Copyright / IP system on the whole, but I really do believe the current state of things is unsustainable and will inevitably be replaced with a set of laws more appropriate for the times and technology.
Copyright law, on the whole, is SO outdated and just a complete and utter mess. The world we're living in, creatively & musically, doesn't even remotely resemble the one the laws were written in, and for. I really hope that in my lifetime, we can figure this out, because there is a way where everyone can win.
Sometimes our limitations create the greatest opportunity. This is gonna smash. 🎉
Your videos always makes my day. Love you and your work 😢❤️❤️🔥
🙏🙏🙏
love your content...keep up the good work, homie!
This is so frustrating….. I’m sorry you go through this. I’ll be supporting you.
You deserve all the good coming your way, but there will be people holding you back. Keep up the good work, We the fans love you and will keep supporting you.
Great video as always.
I appreciate you 🙏
Just joined. Super proud of what you've accomplished thus far bro! Here for all of it!
Thank you so much 🙏 I appreciate you - meet you over there!
