In this colloquium Steve highlights some examples of emerging new concepts that have built on the advances of the last 50 years, including the history of global volcanism, understanding of cyclic volcanism, the dispersal of volcanic ash, the nature of magma reservoirs, and the formation of economic copper deposits.
