I'm an electrical engineer in the Australian Power Generation and Wholesale Distribution space. I have been for 45 years. I generally have a huge problem with the EV push, system assumptions and the overwhelming science and physics arrogance on display. To give the audience some perspective, when power plants are designed the earthing grids get particular attention and for good reason. The amount of energy in and around these facilities, even from induction where their is no physical connection, can kill workers and people in general. So it's pretty serious from a design perspective and how equipment is made safe to do maintenance on. If you allow voltages to "float" because they aren't tied solidly to a common earth then a circuit for electricity to flow can be created, the conductors of which can be human beings in the worst of cases. So this kind of stuff driven by bureaucrats is extremely dangerous. At a fundamental level, installing a 350kW fast charger is like connecting a few hundred new homes to the electricity network, add four or five and it's like adding a small town or village in a handful of little boxes. This is really crazy stuff.

Hi Simon, yet another example of EV lunacy that's not been thought through. Is there nothing this Government won't do to shoehorn EV's into the "net zero" agenda.
Assuming all of the regulatory safety requirements are met, what happens in the depths of winter, when trying to fit a a cold, stiff and somewhat unwieldy cable into a relatively narrow and shallow trench in the pavement? It will be a "trip hazard" waiting to happen!

I used to drive nightliners (i.e. tour buses for music groups) and we always run cables out from venues to power the bus, usually 240v single phase but sometimes 415v 3-phase if the vehicle has an electrically operated air-con generator installed. I've never really thought about this high potential difference between different grounding points, but I can categorically claim that the issue had never been drawn to my attention. Then there's festivals where groups of 25-100 of these types of vehicles could be parked in close proximity of each other and not necessarily be connected to the same generator. Scary now to think of the potential risks involved.

In NA, ground/neutral is provided by the guy wire that holds the low-voltage wires between poles and houses with each pole having its own grounding rod. Pole-mounted EVSEs can tap into the pole's ground/neutral wire and that should take care of keeping it pretty close to the same ground potential as anything else nearby that is properly grounded to avoid having a dangerous potential difference with the nearby utility poles. In those instances, the electrocution risk would come primarily from the presence of non-code-compliant stuff around the installation site, not the installation itself.
