  • I finally went to find one of Osaka's lesser-known but impressive technological wonders: a pedestrian tunnel under the Aji River in the Kujo/Nishi-kujo area. The tunnel was built in the 1930s, is well-maintained, still useful for area residents, and free to use. Fun look at something you can't quite get anywhere else!

    Standing watch in that tunnel would be about the most boring job I can imagine.

    I love these forgotten infrastructure locations. It reminds me of the Greenwich and Woolwich foot tunnels under the Thames in London. I guess workers use to use them in droves back in the day.

    I like how you said you were asking about weird people in the tunnel and you became the weird guy in the tunnel. I want to go back to Germany for Christmas one day. I enjoy your travel videos.

    Over river bridge excellence. Nice to see a police officer patrolling the walk way.

      Not a police officer, just a sort of guard. But yeah, nice to see him keeping an eye on things

    Osaka is so clean - no trash lying in the streets. Quite unlike Oakland California.
    I wonder what the reason for their cleanliness is?

      Culture. Singapore is the same way.

      And you see this cleanliness in the tunnel. No anti-social graffitti. Spotless floor and walls.

      And the great paradox - not much litter, but not many public trash cans either. You just carry your trash home, or as long as it takes before you find a trash can (like on train platforms)

    Interesting this tunnel was completed near the end of WWII. Quite a feat considering that vast majority of Japanese resources was directed towards its war effort.

      Right. I assumed it actually had something to do with the war, but apparently not

    That tunnel guard is not bored anymore, he has a story to tell of the weird guy with the camera asking if he's bored! 😂😂

    Wherever you take us, Jeremy, to the wilds of Montana or under the rivers of Japan, you make me want to go there. I love your childlike curiosity. Childlike, not childish. I once took the train under the Shimonoseki Strait and felt the magic of brave engineering. Are you still planning to take us on the monorail train that hangs below some structure? Is it cold and snowy there in Japan now? Do you ever visit any of the Japanese islands? I know it's not your focus, but I'd love to know more about your life as an American ex-pat in Japan. -- charlie, sacramento CA

      Thanks Charlie. I have noticed that the internet tends to be cynical, but traveling is still full of fun and wonder. Even for a tunnel under a river! Yes I am still planning (someday) to go ride that hanging train new Tokyo. It's not snowy here in Osaka; it usually doesn't snow much but will be getting a lot colder (around freezing) in a few days, they say. I'd like to go up north to see some snow this winter. And there are lots of islands in the Seto Inland Sea I'd like to go to -- by ferry. When I get a chance!

    Always something new to discover. How fun! I prob would've asked the guard if there were ever any leaks or worry of leaks. Lol Thanks for the adventure!

    Why the spikes on the ceiling?

      @T1DWanderer  6 місяців тому +1

      By pure chance, I was recently back in this tunnel and I looked at the spikes for you. They seem to be bolts, coated in some rubber sealant. (That's coming up in a video in a couple weeks, so watch out for that!)
