Mr. Ballard; Clay, THANK YOU DO MUCH !!! I Have not hot a fat, thin or topped a shot since I watched this video. Also, your breaking 90, 80, & 70 have helped me imencly. Also the Driver series. I always prided myself on "never taking a lesson" and getting to 82 (scoring by rules of golf). However, I feel next season will be a big year once my arm heals (elbow surgery ) and your advice will get me to 80 or better. Anyway, Thanks again and I'll keep watching.

Great video Clay. This is a quite a misunderstood area of the golf swing. You are very right to say that if you keep your right arm attached to your body the swing will look very pretty but the ball won't go that far. I used to do the drill with the head cover on but after taking it off and let the right arm go a bit higher I started hitting the ball over 220 yards. Only thing I won't do is to let the elbow go out and keep it in front of the body.

Thanks Lionel, glad you liked the video. The flying right elbow is fine too as long as you bring it back. Some people just don't have the flexibility or mobility to no fly their elbow. If they don't then they'll be limiting themselves. Jack Nicklaus had a flying right elbow and he was pretty good ;-) Play well ~ Quentin | TSG Instructor

Great video Clay. Especially like the way you model and show what you are teaching on your own swing. Too many sites just talk about it but never show it at real speed. Nice work.

Clay, I've watched a lot of your videos (possibly not all of them) and haven't ever seen this question addressed: Are you activating/using your forearms/wrists during your release when the club reaches the parallel-to-the-ground point (see vid mark 3:04)? Another way to put it, are you physically releasing the club at this point or are you letting gravity move your wrists/forearms to the club?

My takeaway is that the lead bicep is connected to the chest until the ball is well gone. That’s a good foundation in my mind.

I golf and play tennis. Does doing that screw up both swings? Is there any benefit from playing both or should I give up one?

I try to explain to high handicappers how they have to work on co-ordination by saying ask any good tennis player if they can hit a good 2 handed shot and unless they learnt as a child forget it!
However Ive just realised that if youre from the USA, baseball has prob trained your left and right side to work in harmony!
I still think making a swish 2 handed with a tennis racquet is good golf training for us Brits!

Disagree in that although nowadays I hardly ever do it,towel etc under arms 1/2 swing drill gives you the basic connection, body release etc that enables you to fully release/fling your arms through impact, or in the short game keep them relatively soft/passive.

      Now disagree with myself!
Having been overconnected for years,Yes it does give you a great shortgame and a straight long game but I am now hitting it further. I used to take everything back together through together but I now slightly disassociate/disconnect on the backswing ie I slightly start the swing from the ground up so that my arms are fractionally the last to move.I do this by coiling my right side into the ground to start the swing.

Cheers for the video content! Sorry for the intrusion, I would love your opinion. Have you thought about - Paneevelyn Swinging Clubsman (do a google search)? It is a great exclusive product for revealing an effortless golf swing technique without the normal expense. Ive heard some extraordinary things about it and my mate at last got astronomical results with it.

Clay, what about the left arm/shoulder connection during the back swing? You address the right arm in the back swing however I am curious about the importance of the left or lead shoulder's ability to stay down and connected in the back swing. For example, if the left shoulder rises in the back swing (in an effort to increase width/depth) instead of staying down and connected wouldn't that result in a loss of leverage and power?

Hi, thanks for the comment. The only place that it is important to be connected is at impact. You actually need to get some disconnection at the top of the swing in order to create more space to accelerate the club and get speed. Trying to stay connected at the top can result in loss of distance. You also want to disconnect to in the follow through to ensure that you're letting all that momentum go. Play well! Glad to hear a different opinion than GolfTEC. They tell me the pro average shoulder turn at the top of the swing is 90 degrees. I'm always over 100 and it feels a lot better. I watch pro swings and there's no way they average 90. Dustin Johnson is probably in the 120's.

Hi Dan, yeah, the pro average shoulder turn is 115-120 degrees. There are definitely guys who are well under that and some that are about it too. You're right, I'm pretty sure Dustin Johnson is probably close to 130. He is a crazy athlete. Play well ~ Quentin | TSG Instructor
