One other simple trick: To ensure your camera is pointed straight down, put a piece of mirror glass on your surface. You then can see the reflected camera lens in the viewfinder so you can then adjust your tripod head to centre it precisely in the middle of the frame (optical zoom is handy). This will give you perfect vertical alignment ;)
