Basic De La Riva Sweep for White Belts with Position Details
Вставка
- Опубліковано 21 гру 2018
- Today's question is from Andrew who requested a De La Riva Sweep.
In this video I first talk about some basic ideas of the De La Riva position (commonly written as DLR). These are techniques and ideas I show to my White Belts in class.
Again, with any attack we plan to use in Brazilian Jiujitsu. We start with control of the position.
I also show a very easy entry into the position that I show to my BJJ White Belts in my gym.
After the basics of DLR I show an incredibly basic sweep often called a Hook Sweep.
It's a very common and not very complicated sweep. And I find that a lot of my White Belts are able to take this BJJ technique and use it effectively.
Make sure if you plan to use this technique for your Brazilian Jiu-jitsu game. Don't leave your legs hanging when you make your way on top. As I talk about, you can get caught in things like legs locks if you're not careful.
Thanks again to Andrew for the question. And I hope this helps any of you trying to use a technique from De La Riva.

Adams staring ability is impressive
👀
Adam
He does not blink
I tapped to it 3 times during the video
Lmaoo
Adam didn't blink for over a minute
Adam tapped me just by staring into the camera
“This is stuff white belts know” me as a white belt completely clueless of this😭😭😂
Adam has the best motivational words ever! Another great vid! 🤙🏼
One of the first sweeps I learned. Ive heard it called tripod sweep and hook sweep. I've caught a lot of higher belts with this. I transfer to this sweep from single leg x. You already have the foot
:)
Chewy, your reaction to Adam's silly hello is priceless. Your eyebrow furrow at 5:40 got me :D. Whether it's cause you're so used to his greetings that it's old to you, or if you're intentionally playing deadpan for comic relief; I love it! Thanks for all the useful White belt tips as well!!!
Simple but so effective. You are an amazing teacher.
I kept getting caught up in this and didn’t pay enough attention to really learn what it is until recently. Good vid, thanks!
Great insigts from Adam, thanks for sharing them
Adam's face in the beginning😂 It's cool you have him in your videos, he's so funny! We love Adam!
I searched this with the R not the H because I figured it was Brazilian and I was right! Lol
This video came at the perfect morning, yesterday we learned this in the am class and it was a bit new for me did well with it i guess. As feeling ambitious and went to a 2nd class that night where we did it again and of course i fumbled it right in front of professor i kinda got a bit of a scolding for not remembering it smoothly when i did it 8 hours prior..... Oops i felt bad actually and searched out this sweep. Thank you for you hard work and videos you guys help me alot with out ever meeting you in person.osss
Your professor shouldn’t scold you over something like that. If you’re just starting out, everything is awkward. All they should be doing is motivating to do better.
Great ! Thank you very much ! As a beginner I'm looking for such simple moves. Adam's stern face is funny lol
Good stuff!!
Chewy!! Your gi is on bjjhq today, you're famous!
Awesome. Thank You.
that is reallly good i will try it
Thanks Chewy, we learned this a few weeks ago and I had forgotten a couple of details. Could you please demonstrate arm drags too?
Thank you
Adam is just Adam. thats his mantra
Nice thanks!
Adam most of the time: super serious mode. Also Adam: :::jazz hands::::
I’ve been doing my sweep wrong this whole time🤦🏾♂️ thanks @chew
Love watching the closed captions and the algorithm trying to figure out what is being said - even better if someone transcribed it - day la heba
Thank you so much for your video! Could u make a video of transitioning between open guard positions like DLR to X guard, X to Single X or whatever, etc... Cant find that much information about it! Thank you and Merry X mas!
I call this sweep the puxa puxa (poosha poosha aka push pull) sweep. You can also surf over the thigh and slide for home if you've got a great grip on the sleeve or wrist.
Great!!!!
I vote for Adam to go solo. :b Great vid guys. Cool stuff as usual.
Adam looks really cool
Perfect! next can you do X (single, reverse)?
Do a video on the de La Riva back-take with the noodly woodly leg goes through-dly. It's my favorite.
A spazzy white belt may turn this into more of a de la huevos sweep by accident..
underrated comment.
Rollin from Kentucky right here
I’ve learned 4 different ways to do this so far
Nice
Wow. Such a great breakdown. Delariva is the first thing i learned in BJJ
I need to sleep. 5 o`clock alarm will wake me up. But still watching chewi BJJ class.
You get an A+ plus rating
😳Adam🤣I tapped to the stare.
This really helped me with BJJ. Thank You.
I always miss the last bit coz staring comps
Deleheava came to Australia in 2012, it was all the rage
Isn't this just called a hook sweep? My problem is never getting to DLR, it is what to do after that. I get to DLR they stuff my leg I lose position and they are able to pass. I try to set up sweeps, but most of the time they don't work.
🖒👍👍
05:03 Adam doesn't look to you,he looks through you.
👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Late stage whitebelt here. I want to expand my guard knowledge of course but am wondering why not go straight for the hook sweep after opening up the closed guard? What does the intermediate De la Riva stage accomplish? Looks like the sweep doesn't need it.
That's a good question, id be interested to know why too
Well, if we're thinking about the same sweep (we call it lumberjack), it can work but it's easier to defend, and there is a counter to the defense but I think the main thing is not as much control and options from there as from DLR.
3:40 hook sweep
Why does adam never blink 😂
Adam is what a bjj dummy doll would be like if it came to life
How do I get into contact with Chewy? I have a few videos I'd hope he'd review and a question.
If your foot gets stuck on the hip and the guy drives forward and downward, the knee can be compromised. Just ask my torn medial meniscus, sprained MCL, and sprained ankle.
I presume that basics of DLR are more blue belt level, as white belts don't really face a lot the situation of being on the bottom while the other stand up.
Wow only 7 comments!
Adam
adam adam
these gis contrast perrectly
Is Adam trying to look like the Yellow Bastard from Sin City?
bro keeps eye contact with the viewers
What if they push the right leg down right away before you get the swee
Well, part of this is that you have 1 arm, and your other leg is hooked (if your hook is strong, should be fine against an arm). If they happen to push your leg, it's pretty easy to put back but then you have to act fast. If you don't have control of the one arm, try sitting up into the front leg and then going for arm/collar drag from there.
@@af4396 Ok thank you this helped very much!

Adam? - I am Groot....
Adam disliked this vid
Adam looks like Batboy
No disrespect but aint this just like 2 different foot positions from being an ashi garami?
Adam😑
My prof. Is a black belt under De La Riva and there are so many sweeps from this position. Your right foot does not go behind his knee. It goes half way between his ankle and knee. I'm not being picky. As you know as a black belt inches matter in this game 👍
Like you say yourself there are many sweeps from this position I don’t think there is a right way to do it like your suggesting, but there are variations of the right way to doing the sweep. This being one and your way being another, and I’m sure there’s many more.
This is what makes jiu jitsu so special🤙🏼
Who's your professor?
@@JS-bk4pn Marcello c Monteiro. But as the other guy said in the comments you can adjust things as you go or depending on the situation do what you have to do. Chewy is a cool guy and fun to watch. Hope I didnt piss anyone off by the comment. It's just how I was taught bro.
@@steverager5602 Nah not at all. My coach/professor got his black belt under De La Riva too so I was just wondering. DLR was just at our school in November for a seminar.
@@JS-bk4pn damn. Now I'm jealous. Lol. I've been training 7 yrs and haven't met him yet. 🤙
adam face 5.00
this guy in blue did not blink him last minute fucking ...
I tell people I train in Chewjitsu. If they get the reference then we can be friends.
Not for white belts but for everyone .
Weeeeeeee lol 🤣
I love Chewy but for anyone with nearly any experience in JJ this will not work. If your opponent has remotely any base, they will be unphased.
A lot of higher belts say "white belt things don't work". They do, if you practice them enough and get all the nuances down. Most BJJ guys just get excited about the fancy stuff, stop learning the basics after they learn the shallow version of them. If you have that much tension on the body, there are lots of things you can do, not EXACTLY like he's doing it, but small positional changes.
Honestly, whenever I feel bummed about going to the gym, I watch your videos and they make me feel so much better. Usually it's me realizing how good I have it (environment/coach wise) and it makes me stop belly-achin and get at it.
Happy to hear it! Thanks for the message.
@@Chewjitsu No, thank you Chewy.
