- Experience the joy of ultralight backpacking. In this episode, I fine-tuned my kit for summer camping, reducing fully loaded pack weight to 8.7 lb (3.9 kg). The pack was so light that I hardly noticed it.
Changes to the kit were inexpensive. You don’t have to spend a lot to go ultralight. For example, in this episode I replaced a $65 Hennessy HEX FLY tarp with a $15 Ozark Trail Sun Wall nylon tarp. Both tarps are equally waterproof. However, HEX Fly is thicker and more durable.
The ultralight kit used for this trip included:
Osprey Trip 20 Daypack 0.77 lb (0.35 kg)
Nylon Ground Cloth, 8 Al stakes, 0.90 lb (0.41 kg)
Pillow (Bear, Socks, Washcloth, Plastic Bag/poncho) 1.10 lb (0.50 kg)
Sterno Stove and GSI Cup, 0.88 lb (0.40 kg)
Blue Sky Mosquito Hammock, 1.34 lb (0.61 kg)
Ozark Trail Sun Wall Tarp 6x10 ft and Cordage 1.10 lb (0.50 kg)
eno Atlas Hammock Straps, 0.70 lb (0.32 kg)
Medical Kit, Compass, Map, Light, 0.29 lb (0.13 kg)
AL trowl, Paper, Bug Repellent, Lighter, 0.24 lb (0.11 kg)
Sawyer Squeeze Water Filter, 0.16 lb (0.07 kg)
ANKER Battery Charger for Phone, Camera 1.21 lb (0.55 kg)
Total weight without food and water: 8.71 lb (3.95 kg) *
Food for one overnight: 1 lb ( 0.45 kg)
One quart of water: 2 lb (0.91 kg)
Most water was filtered from the lake
Weight of Sol Escape Bivvy 0.53 lb (0.23 kg) was
excluded because it was not used
