  • Not many people actually wear a hammer out, but after 12 years Jaime has to retire in his trusty Stiletto hammer. Jaime makes it fun by building a custom cardboard box fitting for his hammer to try to return it on a “warranty claim”... He begs Stiletto in an enclosed letter to replace the hammer for free. You’ll have to watch to find out what happens.
    The Perkins Brothers have a long history using different Stiletto hammers over the last 20 years while building one-of-a-kind custom homes in the Great Smoky Mountains. This video gives a behind the scenes look at Jaime’s trusty hammers of past and gives a glimpse into how much of a crazy tool guy he is!

    These hammers are great for 80% of uses in the field, but when you start driving 12 or 16 penny nails, you really need something with more weight. 14 oz just doesn't cut it.
    Pro tip: if you want to try a 14 oz hammer and don't want to spend that kinda cash, check out DeWalt's 14oz, it's only $50 and is an awesome hammer.

    • @abewilcox4560
      @abewilcox4560 4 роки тому

      @EvilShake101 absolutely true. You can't discount mass, and attempt to make up for it in speed. If you swing on a 16 penny nail with a 14 oz hammer it will have a tendency to want to bounce off or slide off. You don't have the same reaction with a heavier hammer. It's simple physics.

      @@abewilcox4560 Driving 16 penny nails is where the stilleto shines. As someone who has been building, the 14 oz with a wood handle is ideal as a nail driver, use the length of the handle and swing it like you mean it. You will be less tired, especially when u have to do weird swings. The weight only helps u with downward swings, which are the easiest swings to do, and do not require weight or a special hammer to drive. I think you are ignoring the physics of velocity. Velocity will increase ft lbs of energy exponentially, mass increases energy linear

    Buy a Martinez hammer dude, you’ll fall in love all over again and wish you made the switch a long time ago. Different swing takes a minute to get used from the stiletto, but not having that head on the stiletto turn away from the magnet slot is a nice upgrade, so is the straighter claw on the Martinez. Plus the sticker comes right off on the Martinez 😂. It’s the little things. You can also get an axe handle for a looser grip on a strong swing without having it slip out.

    • @MsElijah16

      Bear Hands Does the head have locating pins in it so that it doesn't spin

    • @michaeldahm214
      @michaeldahm214 4 роки тому

      Bear Hands have to agree the Martinez looks very nice and the head on the stiletto turning and not aligning with magnet slot occasionally is a slight issue. But it’s still a joy to use and hardly a day I don’t reflect on how great it is. Never felt that way about my old estwings or plumb. I got mine 10 years ago for only $199 in Australia (clearance sale). At the time $au was on parity with $us. Haven’t seen one in a tool store since then! (In Australia)

    • @burrr1047
      @burrr1047 4 роки тому

      The Martinez hammer does not have locating pins because it does not need them. Mark Martinez is the designer and original creator of the infamous stiletto hammer. He has since left Stiletto and redesigned that hammer and now has his own company Martinez Tools. The “M1” Framing hammer has a few upgrades the stiletto was lacking. For one, the head of the M1 is one solid piece. Don’t quote me on this, but I’m almost certain the head is steel, because it feels too heavy on its own to be titanium, but the body and through tang of the handle construction are all one solid piece of titanium. Handle grips and heads are also both easily interchangeable, however one thing about the M1 I do not like it’s that once your handle grip is on, it’s on. You must cut it off in order to change to a new one. Kinda sucks but I suppose it makes sense as you don’t ever want it falling off or slipping off mid swing. Can also find quite a few colors in the body of the hammer as well on his site. I just see the M1 as the updated stiletto and it essentially is exactly that. To clarify once again, the M1’s nail slot will never rotate or become unusable unless your magnet or slot is so full of metal shavings/dust/mud that you can’t put one in there, but clean it out, good to go.

    • @ibrazeau3044
      @ibrazeau3044 4 роки тому

      Elijah - never has an issue with the head, claw or whatever breaking. I've seen Stiletto hammers break claws and handles popping out, I've seen the same with Martinez hammers. Not a whole lot for either but it does happen. These are not demo hammers and the claws are also thinner then the rest of the head. Martinez heads can be replaced, Stiletto's cannot. In my opinion, if you break an Estwing and are very rough with your hammer, stick with Estwing. Titanium hammers are tough but they are hammers, expensive ones at that, so I wouldn't start whacking all kinds of stuff with them and presume they won't break... they will. I have a titanium hammer because of the weight and the impact it gives on nails and stakes. My elbow needed something lighter and less shocking on strike. Estwing hammers are good all around hammers and I still have 3 of them (16 curled, 20 straight and a 28 straight) that I use for rough demo stuff. Separating 2x boards is no problem for Martinez or Stiletto but do it intelligently. If I were you, I would get a titanium for daily work on nails, stakes and what not but I would keep a straight claw Estwing for digging and demo work. If you broke an Estwing claw, I would think it was defective from the factory... Estwings are tough friggin hammers. Just my thoughts.

      I Brazeau I actually asked my Tongan mate to pull a concrete nail out with the last hammer I had that's how it broke

    Hey, Can you please do a TB2 VS TB3 Comparison
    I want to know is the handle more durable on the TB3
    And does the curve of the claw on the TB3 make it easier to pull nails than the TB2
    Thanks

    A ‘real’ wood working individual would have built a ‘wooden’ box in which to send off his BFF. And said box would have had dovetail joinery with an inlay of the hammers name. And we all know what Jamies’ hammer name is!

    Hold the handle of the hammer farther back, it takes a bit longer to get better at aiming, but then the pendulum of the hammer will do more of the work for you.

    man its really sad you bought this hammer,the stilletos dont have the same quality and they are now made in china, the magnet is made with that brass insert to makes it special(so you cant fix it with another simple magnet and epoxy) the martinnez have standard magnets and the grips are replacable and costumizable,the striking face are also replacable and steel (i started a fire on a job because the titanium sparks if you bang a piece of steel)nice look but the martinez are winning a lot of popularity. I use a vaughan california framer 23 oz with and hachet style handle that i stripped and refinished with boiled linseed oil

    250 for a hammer! An estwing or vaughan will perform just as good. Our forefathers would laugh at overspending on an accessory such as that.
