Great video, very thorough and hit all the major points a lot of other people miss or do incorrectly. Since this video appears to be aimed at newbies, one huge safety thing to point out for those that don't know, boiled linseed oil is extremely flammable. It also gets hotter as it dries, which means any rags or paper towels you have used in the shop for treating the wood will get very hot and can actually catch fire if stuffed in a trash can after you're done working. Be careful with disposal and storage of this stuff, as it can and has burned down a lot of garages and shops.
I've come across this brand of hammer many times over the years. I live in Iowa and there are always old farm estate sales where tools have been passed down over the generations and they sell them off if the last owner dies and no one is alive to claim or if the next generations wants to sell off the land. More than half my tools come from sales like this. In fact, I prefer the older tools than to my new ones, they take the abuse a lot better. I've refurbished dozens of hammers, axes and other things over the years and you did a very good job. Keep up the good work. And tell Matt I want to see more Comanche vids pronto, lol.
Excellent video! I found some very old looking ball peen hammers at a yard sale years ago, the handles were shot. Used your technique to file and sand where it was rubbing. Took some time to get it fitting smoothly, and was able to salvage the original wedge into new handle.

I’ve inherited a lot of old rusty tools from my Grandfather and have enjoyed de-rusting the old hammer heads, painting the central sections and now I need to put a new handle on properly. Your video has given me some increased confidence with the process. Much appreciated.
I'm a fan of the Wranglerstar channel and as you may know he does similar restorations so I was critical when I saw this post. However, you did a perfect job at showing us the proper way of hanging a new handle. Well done.
It would have taken Wranglestar 45 minutes to cover the info in this young man's 15 minute information packed video. And, Wranglestar would have talked about a bunch of non related things like his family and other projects.

My big machining hammer I found in the back of an old Dodge pickup that I was scrapping for parts. Only about six inches of the handle remained and it was rotten. Scrubbed the rust off, put a new handle in it and I've been using it for years.

If you want to keep your old handle or if you don't want to buy a new one just dip the head in some water and let it sit for a few hours or overnight. The wood absorbs the water and makes it tight again and last for quite a while before the water dries up and you have to do it again. My grandfather taught me that and I still use his same hammers and axes to this day
You didn't mention it but may have done it. Wrap the end that goes through the head in masking tape and pour a small puddle in. The wood will soak it up protecting the wood and causing it to swell in the head some, giving an even tighter hold between the tool head and the handle.

Great video. Question?? and this may sound stupid but when fitting the ball peen hammer does the bigger or smaller side of the hammer eye slide down first? I have an old hammer with no markings and I’m just curious to when seating is which side goes on first. Thanks
I got a 6lb sledge hammer that wants to keep slipping off but I got a lag screw and washer holding it. Recently I found an 8" piece of 1" rebar at the scrapyard, well you can guess what I'm gonna do. 😀

For better result but some epoxy glue on the top of the hammer. It will seal the wood weidge and the metal one, prevent dust, moisture, ..

Hey you can also soak the hammer head in antifreeze to swell the wood. Propylene glycol doesn’t evaporate so it stays swollen.
