I was homeless for nearly three years living in a tent. I'm a Veteran. I wouldn't have sneered at anything in that MRE. There were nights that I told my cat were survival nights- the only goal was to be alive in the morning. Your video brought back a few memories. I have no criticism. People could carry minimal gear and survive because they watched your videos.

For all you nasty naysayers, go back to the beginning of Steve’s vlog journey. He is no stranger to hardship. He makes these vlogs because we have followed Steve, and perhaps relate to him, and appreciate the fun adventure. Watching him camp lets us live the outing vicariously. He entertains us because he is humble, folksy and humorous. Each week he tries to find another way to have fun in the outdoors or some unusual camping adventure. Most all of his subscribers beg him not to stop making the vids. And who doesn’t love “Steve-isms”.
Keep up the awesome vids Steve; we love you.

I spent months, years outside. I loved it. I remember one particular morning waking up at 4:30 staring at Venus in the eastern sky. I had to get cleaned up so I could donate plasma for my allowance. It was 17 degrees out F. I knew if I cut a sweat riding my bike to where I was going if I stopped to rest I would freeze to death. Came back about 3:30 p.m. in the sunshine warm and healthy after completing my shopping errands on a Schwynn. Love your videos. Take care!

50 of 74 years a hobo. I pay very close attentions to your videos. I discovered your site from a UA-cam hobo site. Even tho I've a roof over my along with two other seniors for 6 years. BUT as our rent continuing to raise that may not be the case some day. I got very good at staying hidden wherever I was at night but can always learn new tricks. I taught lots of newly homeless folks best I could. Due to weight I always carried the least i could possibly get by with. Almost always a cheap 8 x 10 camo tarp, cheap camp pad, and cheapest but reasonably warm sleeping bag. Meals were often a can of beans plus whatever I could dumpster dive. Tho I caught on to Ramon Noodle pretty quickly instead.

In Edmonton, there used to be a stealth camp spot where quite a few people were set up. A family, a couple, and a few individuals lived there and used the bus to go to work. There was a little pond, a field and forest. Now, it's a shopping centre with a Cabella's.

This is a great channel. I first came across it as “suggested for you video” that popped up in the right column. The first video I watched was the stealth camping one. It caught my interest first because of the clandestine nature of it - wow this is exciting; will he get caught? will he have a confrontational encounter? How will he get out of it? And then there was the humor sprinkled in. Was that by accident? Or did he through that in as intentional humor? I need to subscribe to this. I need to go back and watch all his past videos. Boondocking? Wow this is adventurous! Winter camping series while going to school. Wow, this guy has discipline and focus he’s going after what he wants and he’s acquiring all these skills and talents. I see he’s getting a lot of viewers. He’s got something here. I started to think about what the great appeal was and I think it is captured in the Hunker Down Philosophy. I’ve tried to articulate it here and perhaps other could help refine it. A gift to Steve: The Hunker Down Philosophy:
Freedom in the reality that Life contains both Beauty and Challenge. Hunker Down means self-reliance, preparing for the elements with shelter by camper, van, RV, tent, igloo, screen tent; preparing for cold with a wood stove, sleeping bag, hammock, providing a good cooked meal by fire, grill or camp stove. It means enjoying the good life with good food, good drink and a good place to stay warm through the night in the places we want to be and with those we want to be with. Hunker down means I’m safe while enjoying life.

    Cold weather camping tips:
Use an appropriately rated sleeping bag (down insulation is warmest) with a liner.
Double up on sleeping pads, the ground is cold. Get a foam pad to put under your Thermarest.
Wear a dry baselayer and wool socks in bed, wear a toque too. Bring gloves.
Boil a liter of water and fill a Nalgene, tuck that in your sleeping bag. In between legs or at your feet is best.
Eat protein before bedtime, have a hot cup of tea too.

Greetings from a couple hours South, Steve! For staying warm, I put a sleeping bag in a sleeping bag.
My inner bag is a $39.99 Mountain Warehouse Summit 250XL (3 season bag) from Amazon (or a Mountain Warehouse store if you visit the W.Edmonton Mall). My outer bag is a $39.99 Mountain Warehouse Traveler 50 XL (a summer bag, I got it on sale for $24.99 from Amazon as well).
These bags are inexpensive, huge and I'm sure your Canadian Tire bag will fit in either of them, Steve. You'll be good to -30 or cooler that way. I've done -30 quite warmly in my two bags with a good wind blowing. They're not super-light ... the 250XL is 4.5lbs and the Traveler 50XL is 2lbs. But doing -30 in comfort for 6.5lbs and $80 can't be beat ... Well, at least It works for me, anyway.
