I have the same 1.2 in my Ignis and it is such a sweet unit and the economy is brilliant with the lower 855 kg weight. Currently getting 70 mpg brim to brim on Shell Optimax, which the engine really seems to like. Low weight seems the way to go, most cars are far too heavy now.
The Ignis with its higher centre of gravity is definitely not fun round the corners (body roll is significant) unlike the Swift. It’s a great eco city car though, I used to own one

Cracking little car. We had an SX4 S-Cross a few years ago and it was great. 12V battery was replaced under warranty but 100% reliable apart from that. One of those would make great stock for you if one comes up, James.
I've had many Toyotas over the years, and recently bought a 1 year old Vitara SZ5 1.4T mild hybrid and i love it. Wish id tried Suzuki sooner. Toyota and Honda have lost their way, they're expensive and not as reliable as they once were. Suzuki build cars like Toyota and Honda used to.

I've driven the new 1.2 hybrid which is ordinary, but it does exactly what it says on the tin. Economical driving showing 66mpg with 230 miles on the clock. If you want a small 4x4 they do an Allgrip model with a slightly higher ride height. I can't recommend Suzuki enough. After several Mazda's, we swapped my wife's car for a Swift Sport new in 2022. Over 2 years it's been fab, and I am always borrowing it. Easy to drive, light, and such fun, with great real world performance. Steering lacks some feel compared to the best, but otherwise just great. Real world 50mpg no problem.
Swift Sports are awesome cars, i have owned a 2012, 2018 and now 2020 model, super reliable, fun, quick and very little goes wrong, my 2012 model bought new had it for 6 years and put 126000 miles on it with only issue being a flat battery as battery was due for renewal of course did have routine maintenance etc, let's hope they bring out a new 2024 Sports, i am undecided about the looks of this new model so hoping if new Sport comes out it is alot more eyecatching/attractive.
I liked my Swift. It was the previous model with the 1.0 turbo engine. I swapped it out for a new Fiat 500 which I find more involving to drive although significantly slower - I have to clean the flies off the back window every so often. The thing is, after driving a car capable of 120 mph and 0-60 in 10 seconds I was always stuck behind somebody going slower. Now it happens less often so I'm much more chilled out. The size of the car makes progress along the interesting lanes easier as I can always find some place to dive into if there's somebody coming the other way. Smaller, slower, lighter always makes for a more interesting drive on the kind of roads you find in the west country, Wales, the north and Scotland. If you live in the south east you have my sympathy. The ideal I guess would be an Austin Healey Sprite or an MG Midget where you can go at 100% most of the time but I'll settle for my 500 as a usable, modern daily.
Interesting to have a review from a dealer of older used cars and in many ways I completely agree. Having bought the old model last year we really like it perhaps not as roomy or flexible as a previous gen Jazz and its 6 speed but for what it is ie a new car with a long warranty we can live with a 5 speed. Worth bearing in mind if you qualify for a blue light card you can get a decent price reduction definitely going to give the new model a look in the summer.

Great engines especially if you get a Japan model can tell by where the antenna is positioned, the great gas mileage is also do to the very thin metal panels which helps with mpg but horrible and dangerous in accidents plus paint quality was poor in older models which they faded easily otherwise good car
Good of suzuki to lend you it to test etc, gotta say im not a fan of the looks of any of them tbh but thats just my personal opinion obviously, great comparison video james👍
I have the previous model SZ5 Mild Hybrid with 1.0L 3 cyl Boosterjet Engine which has 109bhp. Got to say very underwhelmed by the new model, it just looks like a facelift of my car. Slightly different at the front, and the tail lamps slightly different as well. Interior is almost identical apart from the larger infotainment screen. Overall the car is not that much different. The main disappointment is the engine only delivering a measly 81bhp, don't get me wrong I love my Swift, but to release a new model almost identical with a lesser powered engine that is so much slower is a backwards step by Suzuki. BTW having now had a test drive in the new model a couple of weeks ago and can confirm it is like a snail on valium compared to The 1.0 SZ5 Boosterjet Engine, I was actually shocked at how much slower it was. Again I absolutely love my current Swift as it has everything, but current owners will be massively put off by a ridiculous loss in performance of a so called new model, and many like myself will not purchase this 'clone' of the previous model with a woefully underpowered engine.
speaking as a new car buyer, who recently had to reject one as faulty with less than 0.5 miles on it, and am driving its replacement with other faults which the maker cannot get parts for (been waiting more than a month), I think its a bit naïve to think new car buyers always get an easy life. in many ways its more hassle than a 2nd hand car...
The latest variant is okay mechanically, but visually? Toilet seat for a bonnet and Allegro steering wheel. I'll not part with my 2015 model. Have you ever encountered a problem with the gear linkages - a weak spot on the Sports 🤔🤔 BTW using the WEF model of 'you'll own nothing and be happy'? Doesn't work. Suzuki have jacked their prices right up. A SZ4 Swift, iirc, circa 2015/16? £12999 retail - via certain schemes or discount structures, eg. with a spoiler and mud flaps, £9800. Thats less than ten years ago. Now what are they? £21-22k? Thats a huge price hike!
I swear by Japanese cars, they are absolutely fantastic, we had honda accord which was a bit thirsty but now on our third suzuki!! It wont win awards for cabin design but its cheap to run and the 3 cylinder booster jet engine is a giggle!!
The reliability of a Yaris but the handling and power to make it fun rather than just functional… might need to replace our 2011 Yaris with one of these whilst I can still buy something other than electric.
What is with low horsepower from cars these days. At least the MG4 Hybrid you get 102bho from the engine admittedly a 1.5 engine. But combined with the motor it's something like 190 ISH bhp. And that is a full hybrid. And as for MPG figures I find most of them are complete and utter tosh, not the first time people have been led to believe they will get really good MPG figures (cough Fiat for example). Also it's all of 1 gram per kilometer better than the 3 hybrid. Having owned a problematic older 3 I still think I'd have the 3 hybrid over the Suzuki tbh. Personally opinion obviously but more power not less these days. Fed up with being stuck behind people in crap cars they can't actually get some speed up when required.
I still drive 2006 swift 1.5 manual. Ultra reliable. But this new powertrains seem like step or two backwards. Slower and not much fun to drive. I heard automatic is even worse.
All those [unnecessary and undesirable?] electronics are liable to go wrong. Wait until it happens and there's the huge cost of rectifying any faults! Not like the relative simplicity of the 2005 to 2010 or even the 2011 to 2017 Swifts!! The new models are surelyfar too complicated for long term reliability, like most cars are today.
@@ChopsGarage yeah maybe but the new one has an awful bang of ugly ford off it especially at the front grill bit like a certain generation fiesta, old one to me looks much tidier and from the back the new one reminds me of BMW mini
It's also important to remember a timing chain does not mean no problems. Plenty of cars using timing chains requires replacement way before the life of the engine which a chain is supposed to last. Cam belts are far cheaper to replace then a timing chain so it's again horses for courses on the debate of timing chain Vs cam belt. And as for wet belts well I think no more needs to be said as James mentioned them anyway.
I have had the previous generation for 4 year's from new but I just don't like the look of the new one. Far too much unnecessary tech stuffed in it now like lane detection.
I bought a new brand new swift on a 65 reg for £10.000 and it was rubbish. So underpowered on the motorway, dab radio was always losing the stations they tried 4 times to fix it but still couldn’t,the dealer was rude and arrogant. I decided to get shut at 2 years old and guess what the dealer offered? £4500.00 I sold it to webuyanycar instead and got £4900.00 you have been warned.

@graemetaylor629 I have a 2011 Swift 1.2, and I can honestly say that for an economical runaround, it goes like a rocket! My dad reckons it's actually quicker than his Astra 1.6, and he never took my Swift far enough around the rev counter for the VVT to kick in!

Speak for yourself. I have no doubt that if they'd actually bothered to allocate enough components to the manufacturing of them, ford could still sell fiestas as fast as they could build them. Even if the demand for superminis does become a niche, I suspect that the right product at the right price will sell like hot cakes: not everyone is daft enough to want an oversized car!

Great Video. I would own a Suzuki as they have some great cars out there.
Cheers Henry
i have a Suzki inikis, only second owner , 20 years old even more basic than these 2 , have mobility problems so its hi to get in, only thing i wish it was auto, flew through mot had service and 2 tyres
No new Swift Sport for the UK unfortunately.
Rumour has it that's just being said to push the 1.2s for a bit, there is one in pipeline
That's fair enough, many thanks
Chops Garage. Brought to you by Suzuki...
Whose motor is it, James?
? Suzuki County in Barnstaple as I said in vid
chops is a garage i respect your very honest i love this review i want a suzuki swift.😁
Many thanks
To be honest I really quite like that car . It's rather cute and very well equipped. I'm tempted
You will love it
I have the previous model SZ5 Mild Hybrid with 1.0L 3 cyl Boosterjet Engine which has 109bhp.
Mmmm, not sure about that on an average basis. I'm sure there are examples like yours but as a rule , no.
@@ChopsGarage its not intrinsically the car, its poor PDI, poor parts supply, poor dealers
The latest variant is okay mechanically, but visually? Toilet seat for a bonnet and Allegro steering wheel.
I'll not part with my 2015 model.
Have you ever encountered a problem with the gear linkages - a weak spot on the Sports 🤔🤔
BTW using the WEF model of 'you'll own nothing and be happy'?
Exactly, horses for courses
Deliver a manual to Florida then? 😁😁
Why such a difference in tax and insurance costs?
Blue car is £35/year & group 11E.
Red car is £180/year & group 20D.
That's new cars though I'm afraid same on it all.
The reliability of a Yaris but the handling and power to make it fun rather than just functional… might need to replace our 2011 Yaris with one of these whilst I can still buy something other than electric.
Nicely put
Have you ever shifted any Balenos with the boosterjet engine? Should be reliable and a good bit cheaper than the Swifts. Just not as glamorous.
Hell- that was a long advert.☹
Really, many of the reviews are over 40 mins
The Swift Sport seats (same age as your black one) definitely do not wear well.
Oh sports seats, not the bolsters are too high
@@ChopsGarage the material & foam inside those sports seats are thin & cheap & break down easily, very similar to a 2004 Alto I had back in the day.
The Suzuki looks nice inside, but like a Japanese cartoon character outside
Thats what motors are all about, we all have different tastes
Steer clear of pcp crap finance, total waste of money
Horses for courses
I still drive 2006 swift 1.5 manual. Ultra reliable. But this new powertrains seem like step or two backwards. Slower and not much fun to drive. I heard automatic is even worse.
All those [unnecessary and undesirable?] electronics are liable to go wrong. Wait until it happens and there's the huge cost of rectifying any faults! Not like the relative simplicity of the 2005 to 2010 or even the 2011 to 2017 Swifts!! The new models are surelyfar too complicated for long term reliability, like most cars are today.
I think the older one looks better
I think headlights too big on old
@@ChopsGarage yeah maybe but the new one has an awful bang of ugly ford off it especially at the front grill bit like a certain generation fiesta, old one to me looks much tidier and from the back the new one reminds me of BMW mini
The roofline looks lower than the older one too - so with that headroom means it is TARDIS-like interior
Yes they said it has been designed to look lower
Hay James I don't like mg from china so the cars I think about if I can drive wii be a Vauxhall Corsa or a older swift
Cool
I bet that new swift would have you getting one and sell your sport
The latest Corsa has joined the wet belt club...... No thanks
@@gerryattrickbiker I would go for a older Corsa from 2005
A swift video. 👍
Thanks 👍
It's also important to remember a timing chain does not mean no problems. Plenty of cars using timing chains requires replacement way before the life of the engine which a chain is supposed to last. Cam belts are far cheaper to replace then a timing chain so it's again horses for courses on the debate of timing chain Vs cam belt. And as for wet belts well I think no more needs to be said as James mentioned them anyway.
I have had the previous generation for 4 year's from new but I just don't like the look of the new one. Far too much unnecessary tech stuffed in it now like lane detection.
Suzuki just honest cars
Well summarised
@@ChopsGarage lol. Watched too much car dealer mag. They're best dealers. Best reliability RAC call outs.
Dual carriageway, Devon style😂
lol defo
I bought a new brand new swift on a 65 reg for £10.000 and it was rubbish. So underpowered on the motorway, dab radio was always losing the stations they tried 4 times to fix it but still couldn’t,the dealer was rude and arrogant. I decided to get shut at 2 years old and guess what the dealer offered? £4500.00 I sold it to webuyanycar instead and got £4900.00 you have been warned.
Warned about what though? A small cc car feeling underpowered on a motorway and a faulty stereo?
@ChopsGarage its more a warning about the dealer not careing and the awful depreciation I have no doubt the will last though
@@graemetaylor629 welcome to new car depreciation. Unless you are buying a rare supercar or special edition you will lose 50 percent in no time. That's why I think lease is best. You don't own depreciating assets
@graemetaylor629 I have a 2011 Swift 1.2, and I can honestly say that for an economical runaround, it goes like a rocket! My dad reckons it's actually quicker than his Astra 1.6, and he never took my Swift far enough around the rev counter for the VVT to kick in!
👌👌
Having made my previous comment I also hate small cars with a passion, also the same as I hate all these bloody SUV's that people drive like they are invincible. People buy all the hype and turn into morons on the road. Test drive stuff and make your own decisions not based on reviewers and what rubbish they say. Make your own mind up what suits and works for you.
makes a change from 3 ton monstrosities
True
Front looks adopted from a Ford
Like the vids...very informitive....but please do away with th floating finger...its so anoying....
Unfortunately (for you I guess) that's always been my channel
I HATE WET BELTS!!! 😊
Interesting you mention Honda when talking reliability, because the Civic Sport and it is / the worse car I have ever had closely followed by the T Roc! And I have owned 3 Alfa's! 🙄
Exactly
Nobody wants to buy superminis now James. Housewives all want 4 x 4 SUVs sitting up high.
To say no one wants them is very general, I do a roaring trade in them. But SUV certainly popular however twice the price
This is not better than a Hyundai i10/i20😂
Absolutely is , the chassis on those is bland.
@oliverstemp9132 is that a serious comment?!
