The Beach Boys have a fascinating history. Their family was dysfunctional. Not only did the Wilson brothers' cousin, Mike Love, have different values from the brothers in many ways and make life difficult for the very sensitive Brian, but also the Wilson brothers' father was abusive from the time they were kids. It should be pointed out that even though the Beatles and the Beach Boys competed, they respected each other immensely. In fact, when Brian Wilson premiered Smile in 2004, playing it live for the first time ever, Paul McCartney showed up (in the second show, but still) and gave him a standing ovation.

It's always great to hear the emotions of music touch people. Whether it's with a group of friends, strangers at a concert, or people online, thats what music is about. One thing about that video that I think is worth mentioning is that it doesn't go into how the Beatles started to rely less and less on George Martin for production duties as their career progressed - Sgt Pepper and the White Album were mixed pretty much in the way the Beatles wanted them to be mixed; they'd begun to take a more active hand in production activities by that point, and George Martin and the sound engineers were basically doing what the Beatles wanted them to do. you should listen to "Brian Wilson Presents Smile". It is his finished version of the album. His voice is older and the other beach boys don't feature on it but it is a beautiful album nonetheless and feels much more complete.
In terms of biopics, my main recommendation has already been mentioned (Love and Mercy) but in terms of documentaries you should definitely check out the Classic Albums series. They have episodes on Dark Side of the Moon and Pet Sounds as well as some albums that you haven’t reacted to yet but probably will in the future (Paranoid, Tommy, Electric Ladyland, etc.) Pink Floyd also have a half hour documentary about Dark Side on their UA-cam channel (edit: sorry, Pink Floyd have a 15 min doc on their channel, the half hour one I was thinking of was made by Pink Floyd but is posted on someone else’s UA-cam channel.)
According to Brian Wilson “If you take the Pet Sounds album as a collection of art pieces, each designed to stand alone, yet which belong together, you’ll see what I was aiming at.” So the opinion piece you watched on what "Smile" could have accomplished musically if released does make some sense. Soon after Pet Sounds was released, The Beatles began working on "Sgt Pepper". Sadly, this album and more specifically “Strawberry Fields Forever,” may have been the final blow that caused Brian Wilson to abandon his work on his follow up masterpiece. Wilson apparently stated that the Beatles had already achieved what Smile set out to do.

When asked about certain songs that were inspired by Pet Sounds, McCartney shared the following; “John and I used to be interested in what the old-fashioned writers used to call the verse, which we nowadays would call the intro…this whole preamble to a song. John and I were quite into those from the old-fashioned songs that used to have them, and in putting “To lead a better life” on the front of ‘Here, There and Everywhere,’ we were doing harmonies, and the inspiration for that was the Beach Boys. We had that in our minds during the introduction to ‘Here, There, and Everywhere.”

Highly recommend watching the Beatles Anthology at some point. It’s a massive documentary that would definitely work as a series of videos on here. Probably the best Beatles doc there is too. Also it features two new tracks Free as a Bird & Real Love. Should definitely react to them after you listen to Past Masters 2.
Carl and Dennis Wilson were extremely talented, not just Brian, but you haven't heard the albums where they did their best stuff. Dennis did his best stuff on the album "Sunflower" and Carl came to the fore on the album "Surf's Up." This guy -- and you -- are singling out Brian, but he's not the only one. As for Phil Spector, what you want to react to is BACK TO MONO (1958-1969): Phil Spector which is available on UA-cam.
I made the comment LOL, forgot why I deleted it though, but I knew you’d be interested in it so I recommended this video, didn’t think you’d actually watch it this is so cool Oh and he also has a video on the Beach Boys’s 70s albums which I enjoyed
Great video as always! You HAVE to watch this youtube documentary on Yoko Ono and her relationship with John and The Beatles as a whole. A documentary that I like is "The Beatles Eight Days a Week, the Touring Years". I believe it's on Hulu. It has lots of live performances, history, commentary from the Beatles and fans. I also like the UA-cam channel BeatlesBible. You're doing a great job btw. I find myself listening to new music because of your videos.
What this video doesn't mention is that 1968 became the back to basics year. In other words, a regression totok place in the pop world, including with the Beatles, in which a drive to return to rock n' roll roots took place. There would seldom be any groundbreaking pop music after that year. I believe the maker of the video here was possibly correct to reflect that the release of Smile may at least have delayed that, considering there was rivalry. A release like Lady Madonna would have looked like giving up had Smile been release -- a forfeiture of the rivalry. Ironically, it would be Wild Honey -- the seocnd Beach Boy album that came after Pet Sounds, which today is considered one of the leading albums to herald in the back to basics movement. Would the Beatles post-back-to-basics While Album have been as highly praised following the heels of Smile? I don't think so. Bungolow Bill post Smile? No way!
Darius, I've got a list of music related UA-cam channels you should check out. Even if you don't do reactions for all of their videos, it's still great content to check out and expand your musical knowledge. Albert Genower, Alfo Media, Five Watt World, JTCurtisMusic, Mic The Snare, Noble Records, OaksMA, Polyphonic, Professor Of Rock, Rick Beato, Rick Beato 2, Speedysfilms, StreetRangerz, Swingin' Pig, Vinyl Rewind
Whenever I finish my video on the beach boys i’d love if you could react to it! I’ll go much more indepth into all of the themes NAETE talks about here, and it should help a great viewing experience😊
Love that you're watching more of these explenations on smile! just avoid some of the videos like "Trying to SMiLE - Understanding a Weird Beach Boys Album" where they do more alienating than understanding of the album.
I think you should give Smiley Smile a listen and not discount it. They pretty much took smile and re-recorded it in about a month with a different approach. It’s lo-fi and minimal and seen as an influence on a lot of home recorded and ambient music that would come much later. It was met with disappointment at the time compared to what Smile should’ve been, but it has a lot to offer in its own right. Wild Honey, their next album, is another great lo-fi home recorded album. Also a concept album about honey lmao . Would love to know what you think of them!
It’s like smile with the “don’t give a fuck” approach you mentioned at the end. A quote from Carl quoting Brian “We’re gonna make a homespun version of it instead. We’re just going to take it easy” .. just them having fun with it, despite everything that happened
I haven't watched the whole video yet, but I need to interject something. It wasn't only the music that made the Beatles shine so bright. It was them, their personality, the positivity, the quick wit and easy laughter. It was also their cheeky attitude, all in good fun of course. 😉 Where the boys went fun followed, who doesn't want to be around that kind of energy? And when the Beach Boys sang, it was predictable. You never knew what the Beatles would do next or who would sing etc... the Beatles just rule. 🤷
He didn’t mention drugs, but that also was a thing. Beach Boys and certainly Brian were into LSD, and I think Brian got addicted, and why he couldn’t create through the 70s and 80s.
Try the fan-made Beatles/Wu-Tang mashup album, 'Enter the Magical Mystery Chambers', and the officially released Grey Album by Danger Mouse. A mix of White Album instrumentals with JAY-Z's vocal stems from the historical Black Album.
Hey Darius, love your reactions! This video you watched was good for explaining the musical elements of Smile, but it didnt really get into the story and drama of the Smile creation. For that, I recommend Beautiful Dreamer, which I will link below. For the story of Brian after his mental breakdown, that what Love & Mercy is about. ua-cam.com/video/0SriaRRcA6w/v-deo.htmlsi=vDYho1aIBF-t92EN
I was waiting for him to talk more about the recording. To my understanding he made them record everything. Just went crazy during the piecing. It was waay to complicated. Imagine if theres no right answer but in his head there is, and he cant figure it out. Theres some confirmed stuff that happened during the sessions like, Brian thinking the fire song is cursed and its the reason why a building burned down in town, or piano in a sandbox, in which he wrote heroes and villains, cabinessence, surfs up, so I guess it fuckin WORKED. And yeah. Mike didnt like it. That did not help the case.
The Beatles “Sgt Pepper” was not only a music masterpiece, many hailed the album cover as a visual masterpiece as well, which incorporated a collage of cultural influences from the dark (Edgar Allan Poe and Alister Crowley), to wholesome (Shirly Temple and Lewis Carrol) to scientific (Albert Einstein and Carl Jung). Artist Peter Blake who created the cover said, “In my mind I was making a piece of art rather than an album cover. It was almost a piece of theater design.” In contrast, The Beach Boys Pet Sounds Album Cover was more literal with them feeding pets at the San Diego zoo. According to singer Mike Love: “We did the cover shoot for Pet Sounds at San Diego Petting Zoo, and when I was in India at the Maharishi’s place in Rishikesh in 1968, Paul McCartney said, ‘Mike, you really need to take more care of your album covers.’ I was somewhat chagrined, so I said, ‘Paul, we’ve always been more concerned with what’s in the sleeve than what’s on the outside.’ Well, I had to come up with something.”
One big difference between the two groups--other than record sales--was The Beatles, I guess, starting with "Rubber Soul, also wrote the lyrics to all of their songs; I believe the Beach Boys had outside help on many or most of their songs; and I don't think Brian Wilson, at least, in the main, wrote lyrics.
ua-cam.com/video/4JhKYwHyoYU/v-deo.htmlsi=wtWse9HX3l8pMQVu This is a live recording of the Beatles playing in 1962 at the Hamburg Club in Germany, just before their rise in the charts. It is not the sound quality of an album reaction, but this video shows the raw energy in their live performances before fame. Ringo’s drums are hard af and John and Paul’s vocal performances are incredible. I don’t think this material is copyrighted either 😎
When The Beatles began writing more introspective songs, leaving behind much of their early bubblegum pop songs, The Beach Boys took notice along with the rest of the world. As you know, Brian Wilson was also growing tired of The Beach Boys’ early sound and wanted to push them forward in order to be perceived as interesting and stay relevant. Brian Wilson soon began composing Pet Sounds based on the innovative new songs he heard on Rubber Soul. “Rubber Soul is probably the greatest record ever,” Brian wrote in his memoir ‘I Am Brian Wilson.' “It came out in December of 1965 and sent me right to the piano bench. It wasn’t just the lyrics and the melodies, but the production and their harmonies…(it was) almost art music.” The song that Brian composed when he went to his piano and tried to top Rubber Soul was “God Only Knows,” which Paul McCartney later called his favorite song of all time. It was what the other was lacking that drove some of the inspiration and competition between the bands. Paul McCartney said in 1990: “It was Pet Sounds that blew me out of the water. First of all, it was Brian’s writing. I love the album so much. I’ve just bought my kids each a copy of it for their education in life. I figured no one is educated musically ’til they’ve heard that album. I was into the writing and the songs.”
I will say the Beach Boys had introspective songs such as the Lonely Sea (from Surfin USA from March 1963) created prior to the band's knowledge of each other and the ballads on the next album Surfer Girl (1963)including the title track and In My Room, Your Summer Dream, etc were excellent. The Beatles didn't really land properly in the USA until 1964 at which time The Beach Boys were one of the biggest bands in the USA already, most other US bands would sink into obscurity but the Beach Boys kept up for 3-4 years, having top singles in each year of 64-66 though nothing was going to get in the way of the Beatles juggernaut.
You're killing it, bro. So, if you're interested in docs, I'd like to submit the following: Below is a doc by classical composer Howard Goodall on the influence of the Beatles. If anyone should doubt the Beatles being the greatest band ever, please let this doc be the final word. This, in and of itself, would make a great reaction doc, but I'd advise paying very close attention to the doc instead of trying to make a compelling video yourself. That said, Howard Goodall also made a doc about Sgt. Peppers, but I cannot find it anywhere. Alas, this doc is more than enough to understand the Bealtes' greatness. Enjoy! The Beatles: a musical appreciation and analysis by composer, Howard Goodall - ua-cam.com/video/ZQS91wVdvYc/v-deo.htmlsi=jwMSLwqS-GeGoYsL
If you wanna check out a Beatles doc, one of the better ones I've seen is called "How The Beatles Changed the World" by Amplified, it's on youtube. Definitely a great watch that goes in depth on how impactful they were
Well, nobody argues that Beach boys were talanted, but the main difference is while Brian Wilson and the boys were recording their sweet-sweet songs with complicated harmonies and "the wall of sound", the Beatles were making a real rock'n'roll revolution. That is why the Beatles will be remembered as long as the humanity exists and Beach boys... just remain a 60s pop act which will be forgotten quite soon. Also you can name barely 3 memorable Beach Boys songs while the Beatles hits there are so many and they are soooo distinctive that even my 2-year-old son freezes when he hears Beatles and doesn't unreeze until the song ends.
Smile, if it were released, would've been a phenomenal album. It definitely would've challenged Pepper, no doubt. Life is what happens to you while you're working on other plans. I still think Pepper is a better album. Although Smile is very close for 1967.
Before Pet Sounds and Beach Boys Today, and mostly thereafter they did play their own instruments without the help of the Wrecking Crew. Also Mike Love for a time was the chief lyricist before Brian and other's looked to other lyricists.
@@Andermander429yes up 64 , after the Beatles arrived Brian said okay we have to sound better and write better,so everyone I'm replacing u all in studio. Put your feet up 😂. Except when your live 200 times a year . . But yeah by 69 they went back in studio. For me it ruins there legacy. But not Brian's 🔥he was a certified genius
Public Enemy were kind of my hip hop Beatles. Run DMC and even Sugarhill Gang I'd think of as 50s hip hop if that makes sense. And the Last Poets invented hip hop no matter what anyone says. Ok and Dylan a little bit too. I can see that and not just on Subterranean Homesick Blues.
I love The Beach Boys. But Smile would not have mattered. Nobody bought Pet Sounds in this country. The Beach Boys were out of step with what was going on socially at the time. Jimmy Hendrix put them down. It is what it is….
Yes, from Pet Sounds on, The Beach Boys were revered more abroad than in the US. That’s probably why Brian Wilson, when on tour for his Smile album, premiered it with multiple shows in London, then a tour through the UK, before finally coming back across the pond to play in his home country.
as soon as he said a 4 man band was as powerful as an orchestra I knew it was about to be some bullshit lol. Still gonna watch the rest though probably
It’s possible to be more engaging and vibrant with a small ensemble compared to a larger ensemble. Eddie Palmieri and his group La Perfecta would go up against Tito Puente’s orchestra at the Palladium. Tito had almost a big band. La Perfecta was 2 trombones and a flute. La Perfecta would kick their ass…. And Tito is one of the all time greats…..
@@psychedelicpucho That's jazz though, improvisation is definitely easier with less people. Ultimately i don't think its a fair comparison because jazz, rock and classical music are vastly different disciplines. I still think more musicians well trained on a piece can go further emotionally with a COMPOSITION, but being as I prefer improvisational music I tend to listen to smaller groups. In that way it's down to personal preference. But depth of harmony by definition requires more instruments. For instance two trombones and a flute can only play three notes at once. This eliminates the possibility of any four or five-note chord voicings (except as an arpeggio) which is a big harmonic limitation. Now granted limitation breeds creativity but the laws of physics are the laws of physics.
Agreed on this. The Beach Boys had some really good music and Pet Sounds and potentially Smile could have competed with the best Beatles albums. But I can listen to any Beatles album and rarely will I skip a song. But, the Beach Boys, on the other hand, had lots of filler music especially after what should have been Smile. I also do agree that Brian Wilson was a music genius, probably one of the greatest musical minds of all time and Mike Love was/is a total douche bag.
rubber soul i wonder at times maybe someone else playing parts here and there. I think something like that got foisted on them and they rebelled hard against it from revolver onward
The Beatles would never had gone as far without George Martin. I mean, he famously suggested strings on "Yesterday". He also encouraged them to push recording equipment and experiment and had the know-how to make it happen, along with the engineers. Not to mention the dozens of orchestrations he composed for their songs. I love The Beatles, but no need to knock the Beach Boys' use of the Wrecking Crew. In fact, doing that would require knocking like 50% of 60's acts music that also used them in studio.
9:27 this is terribly wrong! George Martin, for example, said that the song Hello Goodbye was another gem by Paul McCartney, because of its own musical shape, and if we add songs like We Can Work It Out, Yesterday, A Day In The Life, Magical Mystery Tour (song and album), Sgt Peppers Lonely etc... )I can go on with a long list of songs li Look Up The Number, Blue Jay Way, Across the Universe, Inner Light) So they had a totally different approach to make music! This guy is missing a lot about the Beatles!!
7:07 The Beach Boys have put out some straight up gah bij. Starting around 1976, they become an absolute mess musically. There ARE gems on almost all of their albums, but some of them have more turds than not.
You don't really need to listen to the yellow submarine album, there are only 3 new songs on the first side and all instrumental by George Martin on side 2 (and is commonly regarded as the worst beatles album)
Beach Boys dont compare to the Beatles. Listen for yourself. Listen to the Beach Boys top 5 albums and the same with the Beatles. The Beatles not only make the Beach Boys sound average, but their songs are way and above better.

Where are you bro? I hope everything's alright, we're waiting for your videos ;)
Boom there it isssss
dont forget past masters vol 2!

And the O in Biopic is pronounced the same as open
100% yes. Dennis’ Pacific Ocean Blue is amazing.
The BB is just one dude Brian Wilson, and session musicians called the Wrecking crew. The rest of the band just learned what to play.
I made the comment LOL, forgot why I deleted it though, but I knew you’d be interested in it so I recommended this video, didn’t think you’d actually watch it this is so cool
Oh and he also has a video on the Beach Boys’s 70s albums which I enjoyed
Great video as always! You HAVE to watch this youtube documentary on Yoko Ono and her relationship with John and The Beatles as a whole. It's lengthy but is put together so well and goes over situations with a few other music legends too. I feel it would be right up your ally and perfect for the new channel!

It's amazing how fast you catch the sense! Lead is gold, yes, exactly!)
For some Beatle essays I recommend Elliot Roberts here on UA-cam!

A documentary that I like is "The Beatles Eight Days a Week, the Touring Years". I believe it's on Hulu. It has lots of live performances, history, commentary from the Beatles and fans. I also like the UA-cam channel BeatlesBible. You're doing a great job btw. I find myself listening to new music because of your videos.
please react to brian wilson present smile live video or cd version
I recommend the Temptations in their psychedelic days, albums "psychedelic schack" and "All Directions". Norman Whitfield was the black Brian Wilson.
Thank you Arthur! Going to be going through that list looking for related videos that pique my interest 🙏
never not gonna take an opportunity to say, "fuck mike love".
Wall of Sound production slaps pretty hard compared to Beatles records upon release before like Sgt Peppers
You're going to get a lot of Beach Boys recommendations, but as a DIEHARD fan, my vote is that you'd enjoy the Surf's Up album the most :)
I'd be curious to see your reaction to the album they *did* put out instead of Smile - Smiley Smile (yes that's really the title)

It was almost a piece of theater design.”
In contrast, The Beach Boys Pet Sounds Album Cover was more literal with them feeding pets at the San Diego zoo.
I recommend the 2 part beach boys iceberg video by claudevandog
Darius is spot on at 16:00. Rubber Soul changed the game.
You should bring up this channel at the beginning and end of every video if you could. Found this at random.
Yes correct, and the beach boys used studio musicians to play there parts. However Brian was 100 percent genius

This is a live recording of the Beatles playing in 1962 at the Hamburg Club in Germany, just before their rise in the charts.
It wasn’t just the lyrics and the melodies, but the production and their harmonies…(it was) almost art music.”
The song that Brian composed when he went to his piano and tried to top Rubber Soul was “God Only Knows,” which Paul McCartney later called his favorite song of all time.
The Beatles didn't really land properly in the USA until 1964 at which time The Beach Boys were one of the biggest bands in the USA already, most other US bands would sink into obscurity but the Beach Boys kept up for 3-4 years, having top singles in each year of 64-66 though nothing was going to get in the way of the Beatles juggernaut.
you should watch "Why Did The Beatles Break Up?" by James Maharaj!!
There are at least a couple great albums after Pet Sounds. Sunflower and Surf’s Up are both damn good
You're killing it, bro. Enjoy!

Brian Wilson lost his mind after listening to The Beatles competition with...go fugure 🎉
Well put. It’s almost like the Beatles unlocks a door into the child like wonder of the world, in all humans minds. IDK. It’s magic!
Will be forgotten quite soon? It's 60 years now and their music is still relevant
@@stevebeye1585 Exactly!
Has bro ever heard pet sounds? 💀🙏
@@okipullup8025 yes, honestly tried a few times, couldn't like it. God Only Knows is a good song, the rest is just soooooo boring.
Smile, if it were released, would've been a phenomenal album.
It definitely would've challenged Pepper, no doubt.
Life is what happens to you while you're working on other plans.
I still think Pepper is a better album.
Although Smile is very close for 1967.
Paul and Brien had a little competition going, but The Beach Boys we’re never at the level the Beatles were.
Umm the Beatles actually played there own instruments. Also they wrote there own lyrics nuff said 😊
Before Pet Sounds and Beach Boys Today, and mostly thereafter they did play their own instruments without the help of the Wrecking Crew.
Pet Sounds 8 Track..Sgt Pepper 4 Tract..go figure ❤
No underestimating Carl Wilson ! He was a really talented songwriter too.
I know when I first heard Smile in 2011 I was just stunned. Love it or not, there's no other album like it.
Beatles never need the help of the Wrecking Crew.
rubber soul i wonder at times maybe someone else playing parts here and there. I think something like that got foisted on them and they rebelled hard against it from revolver onward
@@JJJJJVVVVVLLLLLyou mean George Martin on In My Life? Small little part.
@@robbielux8353 no
The Beatles would never had gone as far without George Martin.
They almost always needed George Martin's help.
52:32 Brian Wilson not related to drugs??? Bro dig deeper
What happened to all your other videos?!?!?
You don't really need to listen to the yellow submarine album, there are only 3 new songs on the first side and all instrumental by George Martin on side 2 (and is commonly regarded as the worst beatles album)
Beach Boys dont compare to the Beatles.
Listen for yourself.
Listen to the Beach Boys top 5 albums and the same with the Beatles.
The Beatles not only make the Beach Boys sound average, but their songs are way and above better.
Definitely not better than the Beatles but still a good band
