Lyrics:
Tell me what your heart wants
Such a simple thing
My heart is like paper
Yours is like a flame
I can't make you see
If you don't by now
I'll get through these changes
Somehow, somehow
#RayLaMontagne #SuchASimpleThing #Live
How can someone’s voice be so powerful and soft at the same time.
So well put
Without a doubt!!!
I’m agree with you Brandon Baggott
So powerful and sooooo sensual at the same time !!!
Totally right! Blows my mind!
I would fall asleep to this song , laying in the hospital battling cancer . Ray, you sir have a voice of an angel , All Love
I hope you won the battle against the bully .
5 years clear
@@chromeheart6597ME TOO, KEEPING YOU IN MY THOUGHTS, STAY STRONG MY FRIEND. MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU ALL MY FRIEND'S. 🎄✌️😎🏴
It's been 2 years, you still there?
@@richardyoung7415 Appreciate those words!
Every now and then , the universe sends a vibrational frequency to occupy a physical body that knocks it out of the ball park.
Excellent.
Omg this comment is everything. Total truth.
I totally agree!! He has one of the best Male singing voice's of ALL TIME!!
Thank you Heather.
Amen
I will always remember that.So true of many artists over the years.Great analogy,kudos\love to you, thanks👍💕
Doesn't matter how many times I hear this song, it still makes my eyes water, so much raw emotion..
The man is a quiet genius. Unassuming underrated and fucking brilliant.
To convey so much emotion and truly sing from his soul, this man is as good as it gets.
That’s what separates good music from bad music! It’s the deep thoughts of the soul that make a good song! This is a good song!
Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
I could not agree with you more.
Y ES! ! He has such a beautiful voice.
Props to the bass player crushing those harmonies 👏.
I'm not sure the world currently deserves a song like this....it's so beautiful and honest
"not sure the world deserves a song like this" that thinking would never have a song like this
@@romuluscreative relax dude, it's just my way of saying how beautiful I think the song is...🙄😒
Yes it is!!❤
Absolutely beautiful. Play this at our 35 wedding Anniversary soon.
I agree beautiful song
His voice just puts everyone else to shame in my opinion. You can tell who he is with one word. Completely unique. Beautiful and devastating
Completely agree!!!
Chris Stapleton is pretty unreal too
I put Paolo Nutini in the same category.
👍 🎤 🎸 Performance! I’m going on 70 now and the 1st time I heard Ray was in a 2016 (IIRC) DVD of the ‘Love for Levon’ (Helm) tribute concert done @ the Izod Center, in East Rutherford, NJ. He was part of a large group of various artists - some no longer with us, and others who are still well known today. IF I had to put him in a certain category/genre I’d say he’s close to being ‘country’, like Chris Stapleton - although neither is REALLY a true, classic country singer. THIS is one example where, imo, Ray’s voice is a talented ‘mix’ of more than just a single one! I’ve only been aware of Jools Holland from watching him in some duets with other artists who have been familiar to me for a # of years, but as more of a ‘background’ player in them all.
My mom showed me this after a 13 year break up and custody case for my daughter I'm thankful to anyone who shows people music like this thank you and stay BLESSED
This is just one of those songs that hits differently when you're going through something
A voice like butter. A heart like razor blades. Such a talent.
26 days sober and this song is breaking my heart....I wanna feel this way for someone....real...
Great job!
I need somebody to love....
You will, you are on your way
Keep it up man!!
Stay with it
I'm cheered by the very positive comments below. Ray is a true gem. His songs are pure poetry and performed with an exquisite voice. He is not a major star -- yet -- but should be.
PS: Several months ago I heard "Roll Me, Mama" on the radio. It was so beautiful I wept and assumed that it would be a hit. Silly me; it wasn't. I feel for those who never got to experience it.
This has to be the most beautiful song I’ve ever heard 😢
Ray, this song is such a simple thing, yet so good, deserves Grammy song of the year.
That's a good call. I'm not a big Grammy fan, but this song is certainly nomination worthy.
Grammy's are irrelevant.
Look at the garbage they prop up.
Kill your tv
Sonic Prayer Sure they are - I don't disagree. However, to some artists they are the World Cup. Maybe not for Ray, though I was speaking in terms of pure recognition. Not the fluff. #KillYourTV
Worth him having that Grammy for sales, streams and reaching a newer fan-base who will see what REAL music sounds like.
Daniel McIsaac Yes. This song is my anthem these days.❤💔
I just heard this today (6/15/2024-Saturday) on my spotify account, as I was showering- with UBL speaker blasting! Simply beautiful!vi just envisioned myself sitting around the wagons with the cowboys, around a burning fire, and him singing this song as we sipped our coffee-It doesn't get any better than that, SUCH A SIMPLE THING!!!
Wow! I just heard this beautiful song while driving around in my police vehicle. I had to stop and suddenly had tears in my eyes. 🇺🇸
Thank you for being out there and doing your best.
Good too know people like you are out there with honest souls are looking after the rest of us, keep keeping it real my friend
I'm sitting at my desk but had exactly the same reaction. Ray's music does that.
Thx for serving our country your homeland soldier we appreciate you and glad to hear a cop has feelings lol
Thank you for all you do....people have no idea how much our Police and Military sacrifice to keep them safe.
Absolutely my favorite male singer of all time. I saw him sing 🎤 in Maine before the pandemic and I was completely in awe of his beauty and talent! ❤️❤️❤️
You are so lucky u got to see when would love ❤️ to see him so much,Nov.25,2022.God bless everyone
One of the best voice I ever heard
If you like this, then you might enjoy "City and Colour" aka Dallas Green. Check out his song called Paradise
I like Ray. You should check out Paulo Nutini. His voice is amazing, and one of the best I’ve heard.👍
Just Ray fan. That’s why I’m here.
It is one of the best. I've heard him in concert a couple of times.
For sure!!!! He's OUTSTANDING!!
NO DOUBT... Ray its still one of the best male singer ever...
The first time I heard this song I stopped in my tracks. Whoa, it’s so beautiful live!
Love your pupp❤
you should definitely go and watch him sing live. you can literally hear a pin drop he so transfixes with his voice. he is so much better live, if that's possible
Same.....👌
Me too in 2022
The first time I heard this was literally in the audience of this performance. I was blown away.
John Stirratt coming in strong with the harmonies. Beautiful performance all around.
This man is extraordinary! My favorite male singing voice of all time! I'm about to turn 54 in May, so I've had plenty of time to decide!
He has a TRUE gift from God! Pure talent, and he's so soft spoken and humble.
Dear Grammy members.....GIVE THIS MAN ALBUM OF THE YEAR!! Shame on them for not nominating "Monovision" for a ton of Grammy's!!
My heart is like paper... yours is like a flame..
What the Mirror
Like paper.. not a paper.
Jason Ryan Thanks.
So sad to say this is the first time i have heard this song . Understated perfection . Simply stunning in every way ,if this doesnt hit you ,you are not alive .
That IS sad!! He is SOOOOOO talented... So many different moods and styles. I can listen to every song of his back to back, all day long. ❤️😌
I wouldn't consider it that sad.. I remember hearing this the 1st time and I was getting chills. . My mind flooded with good memories and flashbacks of my life.. whether it was good or bad.. it was like a soundtrack being played.. so it was like hearing perfection crossing past your ears for the first time... it was the most ive gained from such a simple song.
Thank goodness for shows like Jools Holland. Real music that would be overlooked elsewhere.
I hope he reads comments now and again .so he knows how much his voice has impact on others. Gives me goose pimples everytime .
Sad, moving & beautiful at the same time
He uses the exact same chords and progressions in all his songs, but they all sound unique. Just shows how good a story teller he is, and singer
HA yeah i was thinking is this pretty much the Joelene progression? I don’t care though- as you say its unique :-)
What were the chords?
He works smart not hard.Just kidding. Lol
Glad someone recognized that too!
But that voice is something special.
@@AztecJimmy Basically G-C will get you through. Add in D, and the occasional Am or/and Em.
How can someone sound so good live?
We should be able to 'like' this every time we visit it because the recorder is not getting enough credit for his works
Quite possibly the most beautiful male voice on the face of the planet ...
I'm so ashamed at the state of my life and there's no escape.
Pain and grief and loneliness and rage and guilt and terror and regret:
these feelings are so intense, they rape my soul.
I wish for nothing more than real friends and true love.
Will I ever have these?
Been there. I was drowning in my decisions and consequences. On 9/02/86 I watched Billy Graham and he said the loneliest people were divorcees, singles, single parents, and college students. (I was all) He said Jesus will never leave you nor forsake you. Jesus is a friend forever.
I pray that you find true love in Jesus then the rest will come, bless you I hope you are in a better situation by know 😊
So, just reading this, I immediately thought of your talent at expressing your emotions with words. That is magical, I hope you have come on with life and continue to use this talent for both self-reflection and to help others in their search for coping with life.
Ray is one of my favorite singers. Love listening and singing this song. Thank you ❤️✝️❤️
oh how I missed the old acoustic/soft/simple arrangements Ray! Welcome back!!!
Welcome HOME!!!!!
Ray, you have such a beautiful gift. I love that you honor it. I fell in love with your music with 1st song I heard. That song was "TROUBLE". Thank you for sharing that part of yourself.
Man Im a singer myself and let me tell you now not many singers can sound so on point live thats mastery of craft take's more work than people imagine.
true, "tell me what your heart wants", this part is hard to sing like he does, without using the head voice...
I cover this, and do a pretty good job, although I’ve had to lower the key. I nearly choke up on the “Tell me what your heart wants”.
The old Ray is back......A voice for the ages.
Is that the bass player from Wilco ??
‘Tell me what your heart wants, it’s such a simple thing’ it really is simple when your heart is honest and open. Ray is so talented.
having had the absolute honour of having seen Ray live, I can hand on heart, say he is a billion times better live. Still blows me away to know I've been in the same room as such a beautiful soul
Hello dear, it’s nice meeting you on here.
Went to his show last weekend, unbelievable talent!
Better voice in this cruel world 👍
Shocked I have never heard this gorgeous song before…so moving. 👏
I absolutely have chills listening to this. Quite possibly the most beautiful song I have ever heard...
Hello Dear, it’s nice meeting you on here
Oh So SWEET! ........Can You Hear My Heart Beat? 💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔

❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
This song was the first song we used for our wedding ceremony.
Let me tell you that this piece of art, in such a beautiful moment and with the acoustic of a church is something I'll remember for my entire life.
Hauntingly simplistic and flawlessly honest.
His voice touches the depths of my soul, TY!!!
This man.... Is holding keys to souls.
This song really helped me get through a tough time. The words “I’ll get through these chains somehow” was something I’d repeat to myself even though I didn’t know how I would at the time. Thank you Ray for such a beautiful piece of music, I am forever grateful.
"changes"...but the intent is similar 👍
Still hurts....no ...feel it ray...thank-you...Stoke- on -Trent .....love you...keep the music coming
This is perhaps the most beautiful song ever. I can't hold back the tears.
Always think his songs are solid gold - smokey velvet.
They're like a cowboy has sat down and sung their heart out against a wall, weary by the days trials and heartbreaks.
Let’s make this type of music more mainstream!
Sit in your rocker chair or on your bed,, play this. Close your eyes, see yourself driving through the canyons or through the mountains, imagine that it's lightly snowing as your driving the winding road.. you just left someone or just had a fight.. sounds like a good song for a movie..
Ray is probably the best singer I have ever found. His voice is a gift from God!
I will never get bored of his voice and his beautiful sons.
Hey, Ray! Come to Brazil at least once.
Tell me what you're feeling
I can take the pain
Tell me that you mean it
That you won't leave again
Tell me what your heart wants
Such a simple thing
My heart is like paper
Yours is like a flame
I can't make you see
If you don't by now
I'll get through these chains
Some how
Some how
Take it if you want it
I'm so tired I just don't care
Can't you see how much you hurt me?
It's like I wasn't there
Tell me what your heart wants
Such a simple thing
My heart is like paper
Yours is like a flame
My heart is like paper
Yours is like a flame
I can't make you see
If you don't by now
I'll get through these chains
Some how
Some how
Tell me what your heart wants
Such a simple thing
My heart is like paper
Yours is like a flame
My heart is like paper
Yours is like a flame
Change chains to changes
Hello dear, it’s nice meeting you on here.
I mean what I'm about to write in the very best way; so please, no hate. Seeing this took me back to seeing folk singers on television back in the 70's. Kind of reminds me of Cat Stevens or James Taylor. I really dig this! Donna D'Errico put this as a clip on a post very recently. That's how I got here. Great music! Thanks for posting.
A beautiful song can grab you in an instant and stay with you for a lifetime... this is sublime; even more moving and wistful than the studio version.
i come to read the comments it makes me feel so good to know how many people ray has touched
Finally the Ray sound I’ve been wanting to hear
Is that a new word..RAY-SOUND??...
If not it should be...
RAY-SOUND: adjective.. to describe RAY LAMONTAGNE'S vocal at it's optimum max.
SONIC FOXX MUSIC he has such a beautiful, soulful voice, and I hate when he doesn’t use it. When he sings like this there’s nobody like him.
Max Fit exactly @carlos.elsel
Fuck you mean finally? lol His voice and music have been some of the most honest and amazing since day 1
@@romuluscreative I don't think it was an insult just that that this song really does it for him. No need to get upset, each of us likes different things man :)
Mr Lamontagne, like your name your are on top of the mountain! Great voice and the words holala
I'm so tired I just don't care. God, that lyric resonates with me. You fight and fight and you just need to rest. I'm too tired to care anymore.
tom headley We have all been there. Not minimizing yours now. I learned the value why Jesus said I came that you might have life abundantly.....John 10:10........not without problems or suffering but with comfort and purpose. Tim Keller from NYC has a great book on suffering. Redeemer Presbyterian Church. Special regards to you
Sometimes I feel same way .But I say one day at a time, yes I fight every day for another day.God bless
Same here man. We're in very dark times and It's very tough to keep caring
I’m there now bud. I’ve not talking to anyone I care about in awhile. I work n go home n not talk to anyone.
@@randyl6699 hang in there man. I get caught up in the routine too. I hope you find someone or something to motivate you to keep going.
We have had the good fortune to see Ray perform live many times. Hoping to again.
this song is breathtaking and with his voice, i'm at the verge of tears, so beautiful
You nailed it Thecanadianwitch....nice one.
It actually makes me cry, nearly every time I hear it. I'm not sure that was the intended result on the listener, but it certainly seems I'm not alone!
@@nickybrindley3084 I'm a grown ass man and this song draws tears easily with every listen.
I could listen to this guy forever ❤️
There is something so beautiful about Ray’s voice. It’s like a healing balm for the Soul. I found his music just a few years ago, and now it is part of my morning meditation. Thank You Ray for sharing your gift with the World. 🙏❤️🌹
A friend of mine from my hometown just shared Rays music with me almost two week ago. I was enamored, immediately and added the part of his collection to which I had access to my Apple Music, and have found he’s been my go -to! Just love this music!
So soulful and just makes me lose myself while listening!
I read he’s from New Hampshire and was discovered in Maine at a festival in the early 2000s. I know he was the best hidden secret in his own family for a long time! Thank goodness we all can enjoy now!
Hello Dear, it’s nice meeting you on here.
Jesus thank you for giving the world a talent like this
Amen Friend
I feel Christ Himself singing this to the world who continue to live like He is not watching.
Thanks Ray, for putting such beatiful words & melody to what I couldn't say. Hopefully it reaches her tonight. Otherwise, I've grown to tired to care. Hate the waste tho. Work your magic & break that diamond wall around her stained glass heart. Cheers from AZ🤠👍
This man IS an OLD SOUL!!!
Wow this guy is great! Thanks UA-cam suggestions!
Amazing! Also a pleasant surprise to see Wilco's John Stirratt there beside Ray lending his harmonies to this amazing track. Its like The Rolling Stones "You Can't Always Get What You Want" mixed in with The Eagles.
Hello dear, it’s nice meeting you on here.
i can listen to that voice all day ❤
I’ve just heard this song for the first time today and I haven’t stopped replaying it. So beautiful, so sad, so simple...it’s the raw emotions for me 🥺 easily on the list of my top favorite songs of all time 💕
Hello dear, it’s nice meeting you on here.
I hope you find healing from the things that hurt and linger your mind. Tonight, I’ll find it here. Thanks Ray…
The world deserves this beautiful voice.
We hang onto what brings us together.
This one helps ❤️
Thank you!
Tell me what your heart wants...
To listen to this man's voice forever. So gentle... but so powerful.
Capturing all the feelings in one song? Amazing!
HIS voice is unbelievable, so right in so many ways, so gentle in so many ways, so many emotions in this ! Love it !!
So raw its so beautiful its speaks volumes no one can match. Thank you so much
He returns to his roots with that vibe.
Freakin good
Getting ready for post covid life and Ray continues to be my stepping stone through life.
Been following Ray for a while and have all his albums. This is by far the most poetic and profound song ever by any artist!!! Paper vs flame? Genius.
How about "Empty" ?
There is only one small draw-back to listening to RAY LAMONTAGNE songs...it very simple.
Trying not to end up spending all day reading the comments from other "RAY-FANS" through his songs, who seem to be one of the nicest, most honest and genuine bunch of folk that you could ever wish to spend time around in the you tube area.
It's not rocket science with this man...quite frankly he has the ability to blow minds with a single word in the songs he launches out there. I'm totally convinced this is still a rare talent/gift..
One word Ray, from one songwriter to another.....THANKS.
Just one of the best voices I've ever herd, 5 cords and lorry loads of pure talent. Incredible!!
I love this guy, period. I saw him returning from Halifax same day but in Calgary and my flight was delayed and I'd had 5 hrs sleep and 19 hr day I was almost sleeping in the show because he can melt one with that voice but I kept my eyes open and got everything in thank God
Wherever I am when it comes to me, it forces me to slow down and appreciate the beauty of life.
YUP...take some earphones, walk into some woods and play WINTER BIRDS...it's like cutting the world out and going back to nature itself.
Ray Lamontagne has nailed it.
It's excruciating, to be honest, but I know beauty when I sense it. Which is probably why I fell so hard for her. But the heartache gives this song, and so many other gems, that much more meaning to them. I have that, I suppose.

Finally. This is the old Ray I have missed over the past 5-6 years. Back to the right formula. So pure and simple.
Ray is my number one. I have every one of his albums and I must say that this song is one of his very best. An instant classic.
I love his first 4 unreleased albums too, Green Album, Acre of Land, one lonely Saddle and Introducing Ray Lamontagne. Brilliant album's
