Flawless Holly! - Wood Turning
Вставка

- I've had this piece for awhile. Never quite knew how to approach it due to it's oddly cut shape. Then I figured, what the heck, turn it as is! So, I did! The bowl turned out to be flawless. Holly is kind of a plain grained wood, no color, little figure. But, it finishes great and feels so comfortable while holding it. I really like it!
Finished in shellac.

I like the flat ends. And the coloring. The bark makes it stand out. Perfect looking wood. Love it.
Thanks so much, Stewart! 😊
Love it Phil.
I like the fact that you talk throughout the whole video. You explain what and why you are doing, and the materials you use for your awesome finishes. Thanks Bud!
I really appreciate this, Steve, thank you! 😊
I like that smooth, inside curve. The "worn effect" on the bark edge is especially nice to my eye. The wood is very pretty even though it doesn't have flashy grain. I'd be proud of a turning like this.
I like all that too, Paul. Thank you! 😊
It looks like it belongs in a museum.
You are too kind!
It's good that you do what you feel is right , if people hate your design they can look at something else.
Love the piece.
😊
Revamped my lathe sanding dust collection the other day. Had been using only a shop vac hose (2 1/4”) thru a dust port on a 4” system. It was inadequate in sucking the dust. So kept that port and added a new 4” port. Boy, what a difference. It quadrupled the amount of actual and residual dust. So thank you for the inspiration. The Holly bowl is spectacular!
Well, not sure what inspiration I provided, Robert. Have you seen my dust collection system? It's at about 14 and a half minutes into this video: ua-cam.com/video/O6gTcu-uCcI/v-deo.html Anyway, I'm glad you got yours all set up! 😊
Thanks for being a rebel and leaving the flat sides. Sometimes the piece just needs to different. Great piece!
You bet! 😊
Love that bottom “flaw” mark! It makes the bowl that much more interesting!
😊
It looks like a little boat floating in the ocean of time.
😊
🙋♂️🏴 Hi Phil I must say Holly is a beautiful lady. But it's you that brings her beauty out. I love it. Thanks Phil for another great creation.
Thank you, John! 😊
Another beautiful turning Phil. Very unique in your choices of blanks and how to turn them. I think it is safe to say, if we could look through a catalog of all the bowls ever turned, we would be hard pressed to find any exactly like yours.
Thank you, Danny! 😊
Awesome! We love it! My wife says it looks like a fairy boat! Thanks for sharing! Please keep it up!
Thank you! Will do! 😊
What a lovely piece! It looks so soft, too. Sometimes, I wish we had touch o vision. That sweet bowl is meant to be touched.
Ya just have to be careful not to drop it! LOL. Thanks, Jane! 😊
The only thing wrong with this piece of art...NO M&Ms.
Great choice of keeping square edges, it gave a very needy piece of wood a wonderful life.
Be healthy my friend.
Dennis
Isn't that the truth, Dennis! I'll remedy that! 😊
YEP, ya just never know what the wood is going to give you until you get inside of it. Beautiful bowl.
😊
Fantastic again, as always, Phil. it is always a joy to see new video posts from you. It is a pleasure to check in with you. Even though we have never met in person, spending time with you on your channel is a a treat and you feel like a long time friend. Thank you so much. God Bless. Alan
Thank you for your kind comment, Alan! 😊
Smooth as a baby's bottom. Thank you I enjoy hearing you after you finish a piece.
Sure enough, Al! Thank you! 😊
Looks like a boat with a prominent transom and bow. Nice result.👍
😊
The artist gets to chose what he creates. If someone doesn’t like it they can turn their own. I love watching you create your wonderful pieces.
😊
I love the square look,it's different. Good job Phil.👍👍👍👍👍
😊
Gorgeous! I love pieces that are a little bit different and somewhat asymmetrical. They just have more personality. Thanks!
I totally agree! 😊
The sanding really made the plain wood pop looks nice .
😊
Love your videos, watch all I can. You are just amazing, you explain your work very nicely. You have taught me a lot and continue doing that. Thanks Phil and may God bless you. Thomas Roberts
Thank you very much, Thomas! 😊
Beautiful Phil, and so glad you decided to leave the flat sides, looks like a boat from that view. Imagine if in the future we could get to feel and smell too, as well as watch ☺️
Wouldn't that be something, Derek! 😊
As always a stunning piece. I think the squareness makes it more unique and beautiful. Thanks for sharing. Hugs
😊
LMAO - you taught me a new term: "screw-whacky". Half the stuff I do is just that! Glad you're still happy, active, and rockin' in the shop! ☮
Rockin' and a rollin'! 😊
Great little holly bowl: nice contrast, bark to wood, subtle grain.
Yup, yup, yup! 😊
Perfect! I couldn't think of a better description myself. Well done Mr Hollywood. See you on the next one.
Thanks, Pete! 😊
the square ends make it look great on the holly wood bowl ,, keep them coming
Thanks, will do! 😊
I love your videos. I know I watch more of your turning videos than all the other guys I follow put together. I appreciate the way you describe what your doing as you go. I appreciate trying to learn how to orient the wood from watching your decisions being made. Keep up the good work. You are an inspiration to me.
Awesome! Thank you, Ben!
Your decision to leave it square paid off, and though the wood isn’t very flashy from a distance when you’re close you can get a good look at the quarter sawn bit and it has a nice chatoyance, it’sjust great Phil 😊
😊
Normally I am not a big fan of square or natural edged bowls. But this one screamed to be exactly what you made it. I always enjoy watching you work. I hope things in your life have calmed down somewhat. Great job on this one!
I meant live edge, but I love this piece.
I'm glad you like it, Joseph, thank you! I'm doing fine! 😊
...nice holly, by golly...!!!
Execellent job with this hunk of wood...I love the contrast between the wood and bark...👍
Matt
Me too! Thanks, Matt! 😊
The bottom looks so beautiful that you almost would want to display it upside down!!!!
😊
Plain? No way! It’s a beautiful bowl.
😃
It’s a banana boat! Awesome turning Phil!!!
😊
the wavy grains are outstanding.. I was surprised at how nice the grains looked too.. I didn't expect at all..
Sure surprised me too, Juan! 😊
I think this one is my favorite. The bottom looked almost like a pillow.
😊
Hi Phil. I didn’t know Holly could look so good. Now I know and will give it a try. Thanks
😊
Lovely little bowl. For a pretty plain wood it has a very nice grain .
I think so too! 😊
First time i've seen Holly, i was told it's a plain white wood, but seeing what you've done Phil i don't think so, cracking piece that is, great finish you've got there once again, big thumbs up from us both. All the best from Lincolnshire UK
Wow, thank you to you both! 😊
Interesting contrast between the bark and the interior wood. Beautiful.
😊
I kept hoping you would take the corners down and make the bowl more of an octagon than square. That's why we all have different eye for the "art" of a project. Good job.
😊
Phil just uploaded, my day is complete !
Thanks, Dave! 😊
Very nice! I love turning square bowls with the flat sides...I think they have wonderful personality and I love the bark!
Me too! 😊
Once again Phil Great Demonstration of how it should be done. keep up the good work you do.
Glad you enjoyed it, Tom, thank you! 😊
Phil…I REALLY REALLY Like This Piece!!! Thanks!
😊 😊 😊
It's so therapeutic watching you work the lathe. I dunno why it is, but it just is. I am not a fan of bark, but this one is really nice.
Whatever works, thank you! 😊
Another Phil episode,… in the books. 👍 thanks
😊
I like it. Very unique. I have a lot of holly around me. It's really soft when it's green and easy to turn.
😊
It's a really nice bowl. Like you said, it flawless, and it shows.
Thank you very much! 😊
Good evening from Edmonton in southcentral Kentucky. Thank you for making more magic!
Some people say vanilla ice cream is boring. I think it’s flavor is more interesting because it is subtle. To me, this bowl is like vanilla ice cream, the grain is subtle, and interesting!
Great analogy, Anne, thank you! 😊
Another beauty. From the top it almost looks like it was carved from stone.
Thank you very much, Garth! 😊
Very nice Phil. Those ends look great. Especially the one with sort of an oval shape.
Just one coat of shellac made for a perfect finish for this piece of wood.
I really enjoyed watching this one today.
Thanks,
Gary
Really good to hear from you this morning, Gary! Thank you, my friend! 😊
Thanks Buddy! Doing pretty good.
@@ThePapa1947 I knew it! 😊
I really like it. Definitely has its own character.
Thanks, Eric! 😊
Nice Phil it was an enjoyable video. Thank you for sharing. Always informative. Hope to see you next Thursday
Glad you enjoyed it, Albert, thanks! 😊
That bark is perfect for this piece!
😊
I am not sure you realize that you are teaching a life lesson by accepting an oddly shaped piece and being willingly to work with it to let it shine and glow flawlessly. Keep taking on those challenges please. We need more like you in our lives. Thank you for sharing this beauty! 💗💖
Wow, thank you, Vicki! 😊
You are so right! He is a teacher
Just love Holly Phil, thanks for sharing, stay safe, Jules, Droitwich, England
Cool, thank you, Jules! 😊
Fill that gorgeous bowl with M & M’s and it would be perfect!
😊
Oh boy, I really like this one! The bowl is so beautifully shaped and finished and the bark looks like polished antler! It's such a unique shape overall and yes, I wish we could all hold it and experience it fully. Thank you for this extraordinary piece!
Thank you for watching, Gwynn! 😊
So true. I always make the grabby-hands at Phil's work. He understands the beauty of imperfection better than many.
I agree. I am a first time watcher (just found you) and I subscribed. This bowl is so different and so beautiful with its imperfectness. I love that you left the most interesting bits and made it a piece to really look at and discover all that is there. Just beautiful. I too wish I could feel it.
@@greenmanjnj Thank you so much, Judy! 😊
Great decision to leave the flats as they are, full of character and I was waiting for that dark inclusion to come through but there you go you just never know what to expect. Fantastic looking bowl Phil.
All the best to you.
Regards Jim
Yeah, I was hoping it was going to be there on the inside, dang it! 😊
Beautiful bowl once again :). I have a rack full of Holly in my shop and now I am ready to start turning it! Thanks again. Hope you are feeling well.
😊
Another great piece of art. GOD bless you and your family.😁
😊
God knew what he was doing when he made wood!!
😊
Let the wood tell you what to do. I love it
😊
Thursday again-Phil day! Yippie! And a particularly yummie bowl to like. Keep on keeping on, my friend. I love to watch you!
Thank you, Dick! 😊
It’s the Hollywood bowl and it a beauty 👍👍👍
😊
beauty, enjoy watching you work and glad to see someone else who shares my love of wood
Glad you enjoy it, thanks! 😊
Very nice looking bowl. The white in the holly and the bark really complement one another.
😊
That actually turned out pretty nice. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching! 😊
Another gear looking piece Phil. I don't mind if certain sides are not the same size. To me that's what it supposed too look like. Shows the natural way that bowl was supposed to look like plus always love the live edge look. Until next Thursday. Have a great weekend Phil
Thank you, Bryan! 😊
Did anyone else think that the finished piece reminded them of a boat - perhaps an Irish coracle? Another lovely piece, Phil.
Yes, several people have mentioned a boat, Deirdre! 😊
Nice and creamy looking.
😊
That is a very nice bowl, Phil. Thank you for sharing 🌞
😊
Good morning Phil, That is just beautiful.
Take care my friend.
Cheers, Huw
Thank you, Huw! Enjoy your tea! 😊
I really like it and glad you left it squared kinda I like the square bowl
Thanks, George! 😊
Gorgeous bowl. I love that type of white holly, it's easy to see why it is the wood of choice for white chess pieces.
😊
Well done Phil, I love that silk feeling when a piece of wood comes up like this one. I'm making a 2 tiered cooky slab coffee table and French polishing the surfaces to get that look and feel.
Thank you, John! 😊
Oh Phil! This one made me smile. Holly is so pretty!! What a lovely job you did showing her off.
😊
Again Phil i want to hold the bowl so much, the finish is wonderful well done you :)
Thank you, Laura! 😊
I love ❤️ it too another beautiful creation.😊💟
😊
BEATIFUL I can tell by looking at it that it feels super soft. weldone. Phil
It really is! Thanks, Manjit!
Should have done that one as a live stream. Could have been "Live, from the Hollywood Bowl..."
LOL! 😊
It might not be the Hollywood but you are a star, really nice turn.
😊
I’ve never seen anyone work with holly wood. It turned out beautifully, has kind of a peachy glow to it. The bark does remind me of deer antler. And with the bigger flat side, it can stand up on its side! Great work, thanks for sharing your artistry!
I can't believe I didn't check to see it it would stand, Janet. I'll take a look when I'm done here, thanks! 😊
Edit: I forgot, I DID check, it won't stand, dang it!
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Oh darn, sure looked like it would! Oh well.
A nice simple piece, but still a real nice bowl.
😊
Hi Phil...
Beautiful bowl... I love the Holly wood and the bark does look like antler...
Great video as always...
Take care my friend...All the best.....Andy
Thanks so much, Andy! With that antler bark you'd probably make a deer out of it! 😊
The big flat would look great against the wall. The sides look similar. All in all another beautiful piece Phil. The color and contrast are excellent. I also like where you sanded the bark and some wood shown through. Have a great week Phil.
Thank you, Paul! 😊
Dido on Gwynn's comment about the antler. Wow did it ever make the piece pop. Great job Phil.
😊
Simply beautiful and beautifully simple.
😊
Beautiful piece. it looks like it cuts like butter. I think I would call that grain "ray Fleck."
Thanks, John! 😊
Holy can make beautifully smooth yet interesting bowl. This is indeed a beautiful bowl. Well done, … again.
Thank you, Doug! 😊
I love the look of this one. Looks like it would be nice to touch.
😊
Holly is a faourite wood for decorating pool cues! Phil make a pool cue!!!!
😊
Hi Phil what an awesome piece of wood I like the grain in it. The bowl you made looks unique and beautiful I like the bark on it and the shape. Thanks for a marvellous video. Amanda xx
Glad you enjoyed it, Amanda, thank you! 😊
I truly enjoy every video you put out. I learn something new each time. I do love the piece!
Awesome! Thank you, Tina! 😄
I love this one. I think the shape turned out better than I first expected, and there's nothing wrong with a more consistent coloring from that tight grain.
😊
Yup, that’s a keeper. Beautiful ….
😊
Always a surprise when you have a unique piece of wood and it turns out to be so beautiful. I love the natural beauty of each piece of wood.
😊
