      Hi Jess! Thanks for watching 😊
      I'd recommend studying some uni subjects for a year and apply for the undergraduate route whilst also studying for the UCAT! That way you can apply to all the undergrad schools. Do subjects you enjoy and can score well in! Then, worst comes to worst, you finish your degree, do the GAMSAT and apply for the post-grad schools! Best of luck, and I hope to see you in the field soon!

    I graduated UWA dent 2019. And yea following on from your comment the CSP places in UWA compared to USYD and Umelb is large and therefore big cost difference. Also at least 1 of those eastern states school require 5k+ of extras each year. So UWA dent is 10k a year on your HECS while the others are what, 50k a year in cash/loans?

    • @peterhnguyen
      @peterhnguyen  2 роки тому +1

      Hey shivon! Some options are:
      1. You can retake the UCAT next year and take a gap year if you want to apply for undergraduate schools! That way your ATAR will be used for entry.
      2. You can study a non-dental undergraduate such as Bachelor of Science, and take UCAT. The dental school will use your GPA and UCAT to rank you for entry into their course.
      3. You can study a Bachelor of Science and take the GAMSAT, then apply for post-grad universities using your GAMSAT and GPA. This is the route I took!
      Hope this helps!

    Hi peter!
    i just had a few questions: I'm currently in year 11 and I was wondering if I want to do post grad dentistry instead of undergrad bc I probably won't get in due to the competition:
    1. what undergrad degree would you recommend doing? eg. Bachelor of science or doing a bachelor of oral health?
    2. do you reckon it's easier to get into dentistry straight after the HSC or doing an undergrad degree and then proceed to do a post grad in dentistry?

    • @peterhnguyen
      @peterhnguyen  3 роки тому +2

      Hey Chloe!
      To answer question 1, as an undergraduate degree I'd recommend something that you really enjoy and are confident that you can get good marks in for your GPA, and then focus on the GAMSAT. Keep in mind that UniMelb and USyd post-grad courses have some prerequisite subjects that you may have to complete!
      To answer question 2, it definitely depends on what you are looking for. Undergrad will be generally a shorter degree, but most undergrad dental schools have a relatively high ATAR and UCAT requirement. Post-grad pathway is not necessarily easier because you have applicants from all ages and backgrounds, not just Year 12 students, and that can potentially broaden the scope of the competition.

      All universities have their pros and cons! I would suggest looking closely at the course outline to see which course is the best fit for you! However, keep in mind that bachelor courses start relevant dentistry content pretty much straight away, whereas post-grad courses such as UniMelb and USyd require an undergrad that is often quite irrelevant to the dentistry content itself.

    Hi Peter, did you need to do alot of volunteering work for your postgraduate application at uwa? My friends told me in order to stand out, it is best to do health related work/volunteering so that you have experience. Apparently you need to write a personal statement and a portfolio for the application. Is this right? I am worried because I don't have much volunteering hours at the moment.

      @@garay_riveros hi! great to know you're keen about those programs but unfortunately, i didnt try out any of those to have an opinion on it but i opted for medify instead! its great because you can do it at your own pace and time unlike having to go to the actual venues like the programs u mentioned, but yeah i'd say go for it if you wanna know what helps you the best/ ask others opinions who actually attended the programs. I tbh wasnt in for such programs because ik the atmosphere would be too intimidating and uncomfortable for me having so many other competitive people beside me and stuff yk and i find one-on-one tutoring is the best hence why i dont opt for the big ucat classes but its a petty reason to not try it out. Since you're starting early, early preparation and periodic practice is most important (dont be like me pls i swear you'll regret it TT i keep procrastinating) leading up to the big test and medify (or other ucat course websites) can assist you w that! i hope this helps, if anything feel free to reach out to me. u got this !!!! i believe in u ^^~~

Also, is it hard getting accepted into dental school at UWA? Any tips to boost my GPA too :) Thankyou :)

    • @peterhnguyen
      @peterhnguyen  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Marie!
      It's definitely competitive to get into dentistry, and all my colleagues in dental school are incredibly driven! I have a friend in Dentistry who also studied biomed majoring in pathology and lab medicine at UWA, so it is definitely a viable option! The scores change every year so I won't be able to give you accurate advice, but I'd aim to score High Distinctions in the coming semester for all subjects and doing well in GAMSAT!
      I'd recommend completing the GAMSAT in March so that you are eligible for the 2023 entry cycle as well as 2024 entry, and it's also easier to maintain a high GPA for one semester than two semesters!
      Best of Luck!

    Thanks for your video Pete. I living in Gold Coast and really interested to take dental study at Griffith Uni because close from my house but I can't find that their online chat support useful for me. I feel blind and need some advices for this field. Here my situation:
    1. I still waiting to get my Permanent Residency/PR (it might grant in next 2-3 years), I think I will waste my ages if I apply study after I get it but the tuition will be less than international fee. Do you think I can pay tuition like a PR/citizen while waiting to get my PR? or they will charge me as an international student. Do you think is it worth it to wait in next a few years then start study?. Remembering my saving only enough for PR cost 🥺
    2. Do I need to take IELTS test if I apply study after I get my PR? remembering english language isn't my mother language.
    3. If I take study with international fee for the first 2 years, do you think I can change my payment plan when I get my PR? or they keep charge me as international student until graduate.
    4. Is there any opportunity job after finish undergraduate study while waiting to continue for postgraduate?
    5. If possible, could you mind to pass me some informations or steps to apply study from your friend the one from Griffith? 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
    I hope you can help me to answer it even though only 1 or 2 questions. Thanks in advance and keep update your video, it is so helpful 😀🙏🏻

      @peterhnguyen  2 роки тому

      Hi Yoseva! Thanks for your comment!
      Honestly, I'm not too sure about international/permanent residence fees but I can emphasise and understand that it is quite a financial burden, so it would be important to fully consider your financial situation and support you might have from family/relatives etc. I would try to call the uni or dental school directly to discuss this as I don't have that information and cannot give you definitive advice about that.
      My friend used his university GPA only to apply for Griffith dent for 2020 entry, but I believe that they are introducing INTERVIEWS and UCAT from this year onwards.
      Thanks for your support and good luck 😄

    Hello Peter! How are you? Hope you are safe and doing well. I loved your videos as they convey a lot of important info that benefited me. Im an international student, and i would like to hear your opinion about some questions that i had:
    1- im currently an 11 grader in high school, and i want to apply for Direct Pathway To MD program (im assuming you know it.) As you know, it’s highly competitive and requires high standards students. So, is there a range of ATAR that you think would be safe entry into the program-i know it differs from year to year, but i would like to hear your opinion (:
    2-What is UWA interested in as for a school leaver: i mean, what kind of activities that the medicine of UWA wants to see a high school student
    Ill name a few and if i missed out any i would love to hear the rest from you:
    (Academic achievements, internships, volunteering, leadership skill)
    3-finally, as you know the costs of the program is quite a bit expensive, so do you know anything that can help me with finding a scholarship not offered by UWA (because those offered by them usually aren’t for international students)
    Ofc we are talking about direct pathway of MD…
    Last but not least, i would love to further see the city (especially the health campus at Monash avenue 😂) by your cameras and nice edits 😉
    Keep the nice work up👏🏻👏🏻

      I think it depends on the university, they all have different pre-requisites so it can be super confusing. In the Bachelor of Science, the science can be quite intense or easy, it really depends on the units you choose to undertake and where your interests lie!
      for example, I really enjoy Psychology so I did well in those units, whereas I had friends to excelled in Physics and Chemistry so they scored high in those subjects.
      Hope that helps!

      study.unimelb.edu.au/find/courses/graduate/doctor-of-dental-surgery/entry-requirements/
      I don't think BOH course contains the pre-reqs required for DDS but you can enrol and study the pre-req units outside of your course!

      @@peterhnguyen Thanks! 😊 I didn’t know that was possible, do u know the process of enrolling and studying the pre-req units outside of my course? Do I need specific prerequisites for it?
