    Excellent Video, this brings back fond memories, my 2nd car was a 1968 Oldsmobile Toronado with the 385 horsepower 455-ci and the fastest top speed I got it to was 137-MPH and it was still was pulling, in 1985, I bought a 1969 Chevelle SS-396, 375-hp, and had a drag racing friend build the motor, it was bored out and balanced with a hot cam, hooker headers, 650-cfm holley double pumper spread bore carburetor, a mallory 50,000 volt coil and 8mm ignition wires, dana 60 posi-trac rear end with 456-1 ring gear, it was pushing 600+ Hp. new subscriber.👍🇺🇸

    Like many guys of the era, I grew up in a town of ford lovers and so claimed them to be the best. Five years go by and general motors set up dealerships in our area. We now drove like forty miles to find a rig and since they tended to be a bit cheaper than the ford for a few years, they swarmed the market. My dad was a mopar guy and so we had plymouths or dodges, and the family chryslers were also around. I was a mechanic for dad and it set me going with my career in mechanics. We learn too late what is what and what you can do with little money.

    I learned to drive in a 1973 El Dorado convertible. 500 cubic inch displacement, and burned nothing under 100 octane leaded fuel well. Passed anything on the road except a gas pump...😂

    Notice that most of these cars are powered by either Ford 260/289 or Rover (Buick) 215 V8s, which were probably the most reliable things about these car models...

    I tuned up an Olds 455 when I was a kid. I had to climb into the engine compartment and sit on the engine to work on the distributor. The distributor was in the rear of the engine next to the firewall. It was in a big Vista Cruiser.

    Its strang the Olds 455 horse power was rated over the Buick but buicks better rod ratio gave it a stronger pull from 60 -100 MPH. G.M fudged the horsepower numbers of those engines rating the Buick only for torque but how could it not make the horsepower with a better Rod ratio than the Pontiac or the Oldsmobile with their taller ports to go along with it. Even the 454 LS6 which had a far bigger cam and higher compression radios and the Buick would give it one hell of a run for its money leaving you wondering if the Buick had all the high performance stuff the Chevy had you would have to go with the Buick.

    • @gordonborsboom7460
      @gordonborsboom7460 3 місяці тому +2

      Olds HP numbers are all BS prior to the intro of Net HP. 400HP in a 1970 W34 Toronado but 370 in a W30 442. Bullshit. A much bigger cam duration in the W30 with a 4 spd.
      The Buick cylinder heads are much better than the Olds heads

    • @tonysendrick6347
      @tonysendrick6347 3 місяці тому +3

      Each 455 had a different bore and stroke... Buick had a over square block..olds had a under square block.. and Pontiac had a almost square block...

    • @shawnbirt4161
      @shawnbirt4161 3 місяці тому +2

      @tonysendrick6347 yeah the cubes were the only thing they shared, back then each division of GM made their own stuff. One thing Pontiac had over the other divisions was the internals are interchangeable from the 389-455 engines. Chevy,Buick and Olds didn't have that.

    • @analogkid4557
      @analogkid4557 2 місяці тому

      Rod ratio has nothing to do with it. That only changes valve timing requirements. The intake runner length has more to do with torque and hp.

    • @analogkid4557
      @analogkid4557 2 місяці тому

      @@shawnbirt4161 but the blocks were the same from 287-455. That is why there is no big block or small block Pontiac.
