Always love watching to Wayne the way he expresses himself with sound rather than words, but what’s even more impressive is Sarah understands exactly what he’s getting at.
Lets have some love for the boys, Calvin Richardson's solo work was fanastic, really looking forward to it with full orchestra and voice. Frederico Bonelli shows his versatility and strong partnership skills.
Not enough superlatives for Sarah Lamb. As well as an amazing, sensitive dancer, she's also one of the most articulate, thoughtful and well informed dancers I've ever heard in an interview. An extraordinary woman in my view.
I love watching Marcellino! He's not only very handsome and fit, but he has such discipline and professionalism in his work. Great respect for the arts and as a ballet dancer!
I absolutely adore watching both of these choreographers work in the studio, and of course the gorgeous dancers. Thank you ROH for online access to another brilliant insight evening!
i just wish there was a boom mic above the dancers, i would love to really hear what they are saying cause i love seeing the collaboration happening! so beautiful!!
Lets say that audio is not looked after well by ROH videos...how many extra sounds from the presenter's mic! The piano is too loud. But it is so interesting to watch them...
Wow, WOW! This may be my favourite video on ballet rehearsal! Federico and Calvin were so elegant, so strong, yet so poetic and Wayne knew exactly how to get the mood and expression right. Highly appreciate the boy dancers ♥ Wonderful, wonderful!!
So lovely! I was blown away by Wayne McGregor's choreography. I also liked Christopher Wheeldon's. So good to see my country being represented by a beautiful brazilian ballerina (Maiara Magri :)
From Christopher's work, anyone else get a "Rubies" vibe? In particular, the speed of the steps to music, "tinkly" piano, angular limbs and positions and perhaps most notably the arm play @1:09:10 that is nearly identical to what happens at the end of the famed Rubies PDD...).
yes, instead of Calvin Richardson, who seems stiff in his upper body and pretty emotionless as a partner for Sarah... Every time Wayne shows the moves he does them so much more intensely... a pitt
Very very difficult choreography ,brilliant dancers,so quick steps and changes to Bernstein's music which is SO demanding for a dancer to dance at-by the way bravo to the pianist as well-but personally I like ballets that have a story to tell not just abstract movements. But again this is a personal taste.
I think Balanchine once said "Put a man and a woman onstage together and already you have a story." Just saw Liam Scarlett's Frankenstein, which DEFINITELY has a story! Absolutely brilliant.
Much as I love Chichester Psalms, I find Wayne's choreography more exciting without music. The extraordinary plasticity of movement seems hampered by hearing the beats. (Did I write this before?)
Just as this portion of Bernstein's Serenade seems an hommage to Stravinsky while remaining Bernstein, Wheeldon seems to be paying homage to Balanchine's Rubies while remaining Wheeldon. Brilliant.
Corgina: To my mind, Sarah is the closest one can imagine as being a sprite in human form. Lithe, and perfectly formed, she even has a little elfin face to match! Magical, captivating and all those other superlatives I am reading and enjoying in these comments.
Sarah is such an amazing dancer, great physique, musicality, emotions, and just a well rounded dancer. That piece has to be such a joy to perform. It is so wonderful to watch I couldn't imagine how elating it must feel to perform.
to the dancer Calvin Richardson he keeps saying “more decay”, meaning more fluid especially in his arms and rounding the torso and moving more down flowing etc... i wonder if this is what you heard.
This is choreographer language! You hear it most in more modern styles of dance. Hip hop and street dancers are super fluent it it. There's not a whole lot of reason for it other than that's how the music/beat is accented. Instead of saying "1, 2, 3, and 4" over and over again, choreographers started making random noises and saying nonsensical phrases like: "goom cha, buh-boom and PUSH off with the back leg". Wayne seems to prefer "ti-yum way" but you can also hear him say "wah, shhiah, bay, wum-bu-duh-dum". It definitely seems really silly if you've never heard a choreographer or dancer speak like that before 😋 If you want to hear what it sounds like in a different setting with a lot more frequency, check out any of the Watch A Dancer Choreograph videos on Steezy's youtube channel
While this is beautiful, as a dancer, it would get so annoying to stop after every 2 movements for correction. These dancers have so much patience as the choreographer constantly updates and revises movements.
ca. min. 19-22, the solo of Calvin Richardson, he is so stiff in his upper body, and the poor chorrographer keeps saying “a bit more decay” and more fluid... I mean he is a great dancer, but maybe not so much for this style? so rigid from the waist up. There have been many great dancers in the last 50 years that were so much more expressive. what is happening to the youth? am I crazy?
LOL ever notice in dance (not only ballet but other genres too), the choreographers are whores for attention while the dancers who are actually busting their guts are barely acknowledged (if at all)? Even in this vid's description the choreographers are fully named TWICE (in addition to the title) while not a single dancer is credited. At least the announcer gives them an introduction.
Members of the Royal Opera House get early priority to buy tickets for events. The more expensive your membership the earlier you get to book. In the main theatre it means they get the best seats. At events like this in the studio with only around a hundred seats the biggest donors will get the whole lot! If you check the ROH website every day and you are lucky sometimes more tickets are put up for sale and you get a chance to go to an event like this. which I have managed to do in the past. www.roh.org.uk/support/membership
I love to see professionals like McGregor and Wheeldon casually dressed for a rehearsal. I can't bear those elitist frogs saying you should be dressed fancy (and afford dressing fancy) to go to the opera... I prefer nice people dressed casually than badly educated people in suits. (and yes I can save to go to the opera even if it takes me a year for a single ticket, but I won't lose time and money for a 50€ dress. Priorities.)
except that “casual dress” is also not cheap, all fashion statements and expensive clothing... but i hear what you mean. I think it’s important to look clean and presentable, however you interpret that...

Such a thrill to watch Wayne’s and Chris’ process with the extraordinarily gifted dancers of the RB. I was riveted. Bravo!
Mayara & Marcelino both dance with such joy, I love it. Really hope these two are cast for the live cinema

Wayne knows his stuff!!! What an utter joy to watch him choreograph. Thank you for posting this video.
Wheeldon's ballet is very playful and beautiful. Love it!
This is like a kinesthetic Inside the Actors Studio for the ballet. My new favourite YT pass time :)
Caren Gaskins agreed 100% - mine as well! Adore RB content / live rehearsal footage! ❤️
I dont know much about ballet but everytime when i see a vid.like this i'm literally dying. It's so beautiful i wish i could dance like this
Marcelino and Mayara! This rehearsal makes me keen to see them in Prodigal Son together.
sarah lamb is so amazing!!!
Ballet is so beautiful... I am mesmerized.
Love the intimacy of the these rehearsals.
A privilege to watch a genius at work thank you 🙏

Beautiful!😍Just Simply Beautiful... Thank U 4 letting me c inside this Amazzzzing World of Dance!!oxmelissa💋
Love getting to watch Sarah Lamb, especially with Federico, and seeing her work with someone new (to my eyes--the partnership, not the dancer!)
Amazing. … a perfect way to spend an evening 😍😍😍

sarah lamb= WOW!, and wheeldon's choreography is amazing, makes me think of gene Kelly's American in paris dream ballet
Mayara is such a queen. Brazilian power😍
Saw it live! So good
Great dancers. Great choreography. Is there anything else that could be needed!?
The part from 25:59 is so beautiful.
Calvin is an incredible Aussie ballet and tap dancer!
I Love Ballet
Wayne McGregor is quite incredible - as are the dancers.
She’s perfect 😊
Sarah lamb is so beautiful!
yes she is except at 1.21:15 her face and head is such a weird shape
I wish Wayne would perform!!!
yes, instead of Calvin Richardson, who seems stiff in his upper body and pretty emotionless as a partner for Sarah... Every time Wayne shows the moves he does them so much more intensely... a pitt
Thank you I just came across this.

Sarah Lamb is amazing in this part!!!!
What a privilege to just watch this 😘😂❤️
Mayara só orgulho 💚💛

Thank you ROH for reposting it!!
how do dancers not fall in love with each other constantly?
They don’t have time lol 😂 10 hour rehearsals daily then dying at the end of the day leaves little time for anything else
I love this
I’d love to work/dance at the royal ballet, it would be a dream come true ❤️ but I am not as perfect as the dancers in here 😢
Is that even possible its magic
*I am entranced*

can you imagine Sarah stage diving and crowd surfing, magic
Beautiful
Is Sarah really a human??
Corgina: To my mind, Sarah is the closest one can imagine as being a sprite in human form. Lithe, and perfectly formed, she even has a little elfin face to match! Magical, captivating and all those other superlatives I am reading and enjoying in these comments.

what are the repeating phrases that Wayne is keeping saying? sounds like "Jiang wei" or is saying "jump way"? does anyone know?

who is the dancer at the beginning ?
Wonderful😍
Wonderful but had to chuckle when the choreographer nearly fell over at 9:24 😆
14:47, 25:55,1:05:10,1:08:47,1:11:20,1:15:47
If you like music, go watch Bernstein`s lectures on youtube.

I'm with you Megan. Too much correction all at one time .... very annoying, but necessary I guess ... at times, but NOT at nauseum! :-)
Is he speaking Chinese?

Wayne makes me kind of anxious watching him. Is it nervous energy I feel from him? IDK but he seems more than attentive... he seems "antsy". 🐜

lol these choreographers ha ha
Loved Wheeldon's ballet, McGregor's - a bit less. The music for Wheeldon's though is disappointing...
McGregor's gymnastic floor exercises, I'm so bored with him.
Ballet definitely skews towards an older demographic. Lots of grey and blue haired ladies in the audience.
Aves Raggiana Bet the demographic of those watching here is much lower though, and there’s many more of us.
