Bikepacking hut trip from Durango to Moab w/San Juan Huts

- The Durango to Moab hut trip had been on my list of dream adventures for awhile, and I finally made it happen! The 7 day mountain bike route starts outside of Durango, and makes its way through the Colorado high country, down to the beautiful deserts of Utah. Each day is about 30 miles, for a total of about 220 miles. The best part is that you don't need to weigh down your bike with food and camping gear, the huts are fully stocked with everything you could ever want. There's even a fireplace for cold nights. For this adventure, our friends at Gates lent us super sweet REEB Six Fidy bikes equipped with Gates Carbon Drives and Pinion Gear Boxes.
Here's the entire playlist of videos for this adventure: • Getting High on the Co...

Editing the best moments from this trip was really fun, what an incredible 7 days. I’ll always look back on this adventure with fond memories. Do any of you have a favorite 7 day stretch of bike touring?
This trip are moments a lot of good.A lot of beautiful places and bikepacking what very nice. Congratulations for your's. 👏🙏
Total jerk move at the 10-minute Mark with the cattle drive you should have gotten out of the way and let the cattle pass you should know better.
@@inbliss2 wow
Steve Brown we did get out of the way, but it was too late, they had already been spooked.
@@duzer weren't you on state forest land I'm pretty sure at least where I live its illegal to graze cattle on state forest land
Thanks Ryan. I'm a recent fan. "These are my things", 4:30 , says it all. Happy trails my friend .

I’m heading out with old friends and new, in nineteen days, for this ride. Thought I’d get a preview of what I’m in for. Love your video!
You’re gonna love it
I just finished the Durango to Moab San Juan Huts route last week, and it was so awesome that I had to come back to your videos to relive it again. One thing I noticed, and one of the reasons why I love your channel, is that even through the parts that I know were super difficult you definitely kept a much better attitude than I did!
So cool that you did this route, it’s so beautiful!!
Last hill... made me think "famous last words" :)
Really enjoyed this Series! Great content!
Thanks for sharing.
This is how life should be lived. Thanks for these videos. 🙂

This is the best video I have seen! Colorado looks amazing! Love all the different shots ... different angles. Keep it up! Hope your heart is healing up. Thanks for sharing it.
Thanks Noah! Appreciate the kind words. My heart is doing much better, time heals...so does being in nature
A wonderful compilation of an amazing trip. Love seeing all the little critters along the way. That's the thing about walking or cycling, you become so much more aware of the natural world. Thanks for sharing this, Ryan.
I agree, you go slow enough to check out all of nature's gems
Awesome job editing this down. Beautiful! I was getting nervous on the rocky ledges you were navigating. Views were absolutely amazing. Thank you for a terrific video.
Thanks! It took a long time to pull all the best parts and make it flow together, but I really like it.
Loved this series! Very inspiring! To be able to convey such passion and excitement is a real talent so thank you for doing what you do. 🤙🚲🇨🇦

Brice Stella thanks!! I’d love to this again without documenting it and just ride!! next time!
Perfect timing, video popped up on my notifications right when I was getting my bike ready for a ride on such beautiful day here in Oklahoma. Great motivator!

Awesome! I'll hold onto these memories for a lifetime
I admire your passion to follow your dreams! Keep it going as long as you can!
Thanks, I’m planning on it!
As always Ryan, you do incredible work putting this video together.I really enjoyed the original multi part series, and this was the frosting on the cake. Well done!
Thanks my man!
Beautiful film making Ryan. I LOVE how your videos mix up the shots, instead of simply doing POV. The music selections are awesome. Your candid tenacity for staying so positive through even the worst of situations. THIS truly makes me want to do a GDMBR trip!!!
Thanks! It’s a lot of work to get all the shots, but it makes the videos a lot more dynamic
I have truly enjoyed all of the different adventures I have watched over the last week. I’ve watch many and your positivity and general outlook on life is refreshing and inspiring. I don’t know I’ll ever have the opportunity to do the same type of adventures as you, but you have inspired me to find ways to do a few short adventures in my home state of New Mexico! And Matthew’s “you’re stronger than you think you are, you can do more” was a saying I used this weekend on a tough ride! Enjoyed watching and look forward to many more videos!
I wish you all the best on your future adventures!!! Happy trails
Superb. Telluride is awesome too.
Super recap of a great trip and series!
Thomas Daniel thanks Thomas!
Fantastic another bike video!!!
Yay!! Bike videos are the best! :)
This is such a wonderful piece of film. I love the nature shots, the landscapes and both of your enthusiasm for being outdoors. Great work buddy.

Ryan the San Jaun huts look amazing thank you for showing us I did not know about them . Keep doing what you do , changing peoples lives in the most amazing ways . ps. we love Mathew....
It's a pretty sweet system they have put together.
Love your videos. We're going to sign up for this trip tommorrow! It's been on our list for years. You guys inspired us to do it!
You’re gonna love it!!
If I were a bee, I would take a nap in my honey. My son at 32 has a car free life. He can't ride a bike due to spurs in his knee. But he walks to work and home every day. He doesn't mine either. You don't miss what you never had. That is the key. Back in the 1970's, I walked to work over 7 miles one way. I could afford a car, but never saw a reason to really buy one. Nature gives you everything you need, but not everything you desire.
Very impressive example you set for your son, love it!
Yes that was a great shot!
:)
Love your enthusiasm bro! Great video.
Thanks!
I love this
Such an incredible representation of artistic license. Absolutely awesome. You are for SURE "going places" with your creativity & popularity...and inspiring thousands of people along the way :) Cheers!
Katie Anne Mertz awwww!! The warmest of warm fuzzies!
What a fun highlight reel of this adventure! I am so stoked to see your subs count growing! Your love of life, experiences and of Mother Earth is much needed in this current climate. Keep cranking out the amazing content!
I'll keep cranking, you keep watching! deal?? :)
I am a patreon, so you better believe I am going to keep watching! Also, keep dancing and stoked to hear you got a new drone! I preordered the Mavic Mini, I am excited to see what I can capture with it! I post on IG. I am not skilled enough or make the time to create content worthy of UA-cam.
Ckblab thanks for your support!! It helped buy a new drone. And have fun with the Mini, looks really cool
Great video Ryan, so many things to say about the cinematography music and editing....all compliments and so much hard work.
Andrew Danly thanks my man! Appreciate the kind words. It was a ton of work to get all these purdy shots, but made the editing so much fun

BIKE LIFE!!!
Nice recap video of your trip. Nice to ride and not hear cars flying by you on the Highway I bet 😋 seen a saying on the internet thought you would like. It goes ( I don't ride bikes to add days to my life. I ride bikes to add life to my days ) 🚴🚴😀 keep on biking..Go Explore
Good catch, no vehicle noise for an entire WEEK! It was so nice.
Epic!
I found this video on Bikepacking.com
Brilliant video and you are so lucky to have such a fantastic place to travel around. Cheers for the upload.
Nice! I've never heard anyone sing "happy Thursday" before, Ryan. Maybe it will catch on. Wish we had trails like those and mountains like those....... All of my multi-day bike tours have been on-road but I recently bought a new 'gravel' bike (actually, it's a cyclocross one) but it's a bit of a dog, so I will probably sell it and stick to the road for the foreseeable future. C'est la vie!
Brian Ward I like all types of bikes travel, but staying off road eliminates so much potential danger.
Ryan Van Duzer I’d say off-road gets you to amazing places a road bike will never do.
@@tonyhussey3610 True - and I've just learned of one such, and it's not too far from me, soooo.....
Brian Ward sounds good...
I've done both routes, and am signed up to do Tel-Moab again soon. Some day, I'd love to do it in the Fall!
These routes are so fun!!
Nice video
Thanks!
Yes you have told me that you love the desert, but you know what?... Love you man. Peace
Chris Barker awwww,,thanks Chris!! Back atcha
Happy Thursday song 🎶🎶🎶
It's your song!
I agree. Things don’t buy happiness, but what the “western” world also provides is the ability to have enough wealth to go on pleasure trips. People chasing things are wasteful, but I’m also glad I don’t have to be a farmer and work hard every day just to survive.
We are moving to Durango / Pagosa Springs and I definitely plan to do this trip.
AustinBikepacker awesome!!! You’ll love it
@@duzer Our crew starts the ride Sept 2nd THX for the videos!
Where is the next adventure Duzer? There is some great cycling and great people/places around the KCmetro area... I want to ride with ya, if you can't make it here I'll make it there in the spring...Keep up the great work! Thanks for the great inspiring videos.
Not sure...we'll see! I'll let you know if I make it to KC someday
That's fun
I sure think so :)
Oh, bee hive , Ryan ...lol
12:10 R.I.P. drone 🙁 I’m sure you’ll soon be flying again and giving us those breathtaking views. Great series and channel. Thanks!
I got a new one, all ready for the next adventure!! Thanks for watching and stay tuned for more
@@duzer sweet! Which one did u end up with?
Amateur Hour Adventures got the mavic air again, I like that drone
"Who put all these rocks on the trail" total dad joke that my dad would always say when backpacking in my youth
Hannah Sharp yep, I’m a dork;)
I love your videos!!!!!! What’s up next?
Sleep! haha. Trying to put one last adventure together before the end of the year
I’m always impressed with your videos. Do you mainly use the Sony 3000 camcorder for most of the video aside from of course the drone footage? If so, I might have to get me one of those. Shots are really good!
I use a bunch of cameras, the Sony Action Cam is mainly my helmet cam, the prettier shots are with the Sony Rx100v and the A6500.
Great work Duzer. You are doing MTB videos right!
Thanks!! So fun out there
New subscriber and nut roll lover (LOL)! Lov'n the vids, inspirational and educational. I've got a 326-miler tentatively scheduled early summer. Hoping that will still be a go. A couple of questions if ya don't mind. 1) What brand of shaver do you use? (I hate having facial hair) 2) What brand of chamois do you prefer for long tour rides. Lov'n the channel, getting lots of ideas! Thanks!
haha, Welcome to my channel you Nut Roll LOver!! I use a Braun shaver, got it at target for like 70 bucks, and my fav bike shorts are made by ElevenPine, look em up, great Boulder brand!
Hi Ryan, I'm just having a binge watching of your fantastic contents. That's an enormous effort to put all that online, what a powerhouse ! About Pinion gearbox now, I've followed your advice and booked my Priority 600x, and was just wondering : can the gearbox be submerged when passing a stream, and which is the safest way to clean it once it's full of mud? Thanks for your kindness and skill
Hello!!
Yes, the gearbox can be submerged, I’ve ridden mine through many puddles, they’re sealed so that nothing can get inside. All you have to do is splash it with water to clean it off. You’re gonna love the 600x!
Ryan, was Matthew able to keep up his practice of running every day through out the entire trip? Saw he did it the 1st day but no mention of it on other days. I got to believe you guys were wiped out after each day's ride. Keep spreading your message of love, peace and getting out there in Mother Nature. Life's too short to spend it on the couch! You should think about starting some Team Duzer charters!
Steve Derr yep, we went on short runs everyday. We were tired, but always had energy for a little more!
Heard that you went through the LaSals ... did you get very close to Manti, Utah at all? That is near where we lived when we were in Utah. So that name really stood out to me when you talked about it.
I do t remember hearing that name
Really great video. Looks like a trip I need to take. Any hints on how you kept the cameras charged? or did you pack a bunch of batteries?
I just packed a bunch of batteries, that's my fail safe when I know power will be limited.
I want to do this so bad one of these days! My question is how did you get back to the starting point
There better be a salted nut roll interlude...just sayin.
haha. not this time :)
Awesome trip. What percentage was single track?
Depends, there's an alternate single track route that you can take everyday. I'd say about 60% singletrack
Planning on trying this in September 2021. What did you do about clothes? Especially the shammy. Wash with water, squeeze it out then hang dry overnight? Just curious as I noticed you packed pretty light on clothing.
Great job Ryan...No crashies...No flaties...I get...But what the heck are “No whammies”?
Reference to a phrase used in 1980s TV game show "Press Your Luck" -- hitting a whammy would bankrupt the player and s/he would have to start over at zero bucks. Players would press a button and as it went around before hitting their choice the would say "no whammies!"
Brian Sutton exactly!!! Whammies are bad news
“OK...OK”... I get that they’re BAD news...But what are they???...l need to know so that I know when and if I ever get one.
Dick Thomson you’re thinking too much about it;) a whammie is anything really bad, like something catastrophic. If you want a specific example, how bout a bear chasing you down a trail, then a swarm of bees start in on the chase, all while volcanoes are spewing out streams of lava!! ;) WHAMMY!!
What is the daily elevation gains like on average? Loved the videos on this.
I forget exactly, but it’s a lot of UP
Ryan enjoyed as always. I got Priority 600 but what did you think about the pinion and belt drive on this kind of a bicycle ? Are there very many detractors?
I love this Pinion and belt on this mtn bike, I'll be doing a review video soon. Stay tuned.
@@duzer thanx
You Earned A New Sub!!!I Love Your Video!!!You Enjoy Your Live Unlike Me 😂.Well Have A Nice Day!
ZeroSAN welcome to the channel!! Thanks for subscribing and hope you enjoy my content
Were those trails near the end as dangerous as they look on the video? It looked like a slip of a tire or a small mistake could send one plunging into the gorge! Would you recommend that only advanced MTB riders do this?
Ryan, Love your channel. I'm looking for your thoughts. Planning a 50th Birthday adventure next year and based on your videos I am thinking of doing both the Durango-Moab Huts and then the Moab-Grand Junction huts in one epic trip. I found you on UA-cam because I was interested in the Trek 1120 and have sense purchase one. Do you think the 1120 will do well on the Durango-Moab section of my trip? Thanks.
Sounds like an awesome 50th Birthday!! The Durango to Moab ride is sooo epic, and it's great because you can invite 7 friends to your bike party :) The 1120 would work, but I must say that you'll want front suspension if you're taking the alternative single track options. It would work...but I was VERY happy that I had suspension up front. Hope you make it happen!
@@duzer Thanks so much for your insight. Keep pushin' those pedals.
@12:29 - that looked like one scary vertical drop😅
Yep, that's where my drone went, haha!
@@duzer haha, better the drone than you. A lot of things you said in this video were inspirational. Made me reassess my own personal life. Cheers mate!
Hey Ryan, what's your go to shoe for a ride like this?
Any type of MTB shoe with SPD has worked for me
Would you be able to do that on a gravel bike?
Steve LaChappelle I wouldn’t recommend it...especially if you take the daily alternative single track options.
I assume, this is a big advertisement for this hut company? Is there shown a hint I missed?
Looking for the location of the huts on their website, I find nothing....? - but a price tag of 150,- per night....???
it's about 100 dollars a day, depending on how many people sign up...and that includes all three meals, water and daily energy bars and snacks. I don't think they give the location of the huts until you sign up.
Ok, how did you charge all your video equipment for this adventure? A solar charger would only get you so far I assume.
Could you give some advice on starting a UA-cam channel?
Just start doing it. Your first video might be crap, but you'll get better with every new upload. Best time to start is NOW!
i thought all bikepackers had long beards
haha, I guess that I'm the complete opposite of that :)
Joke:
How do you know if somebody’s a happy cyclist?
They have insects in their teeth. 😂😂
YES!!! So true
Total jerk move at the 10-minute Mark you should have gotten out of the way and let those cattle pass you should know better! Only thinking about yourself.
Steve Brown you’re assuming a lot here buddy. We were flying down a dirt road in the absolute middle of nowhere and didn’t expect to run into a cattle drive. Once we saw the herd we got off our bikes and let them pass, but most had already been spooked and were running into the woods.
Leaving comments like this...total jerk move, only thinking about yourself;)
@@duzer cattle move away and back together fairly easily..no worries about the cattle drive...but be more careful around bison..they will just knock you off your bike...lol
Susan Scorah yeah, I’d steer clear of those guys!
