Getting High on the Colorado Trail-Bikepacking Hut Trip Durango to Moab-Part 1
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 жов 2024
- The Durango to Moab hut trip had been on my list of dream adventures for awhile, and I finally made it happen! The 7 day mountain bike route starts outside of Durango, and makes its way through the Colorado high country, down to the beautiful deserts of Moab. Each day is about 30 miles, for a total of about 220 miles. The best part is that you don't need to weigh down your bike with food and camping gear, the huts are fully stocked with everything you could ever want! There's even a fireplace for cold nights. For this adventure, our friends at Gates lent us super sweet REEB Six Fidy bikes equipped with Gates Carbon Drives and Pinion Gear Boxes. So smooth! In this episode, we ride about 20 miles on the Colorado Trail, starting at Molas Pass, and ending at Bolam Hut.

Day 1 was so beautiful...and there’s 6 more to go! Have any of you ever gone on an off-road bike tour? I wanna do it again, and again, and again.
Ryan Van Duzer your the best bro
Ryan Van Duzer say hi to me in the next video..
You guys are animals. It was spectacular, and it looked brutal! No off-road for me, but watching your exciting video makes me anxious to get out for our last local ride today. In two days our rainy season begins. Not as magnificent as yours, my route is paved and flat, but it has beaches...
Check out Forestyforest’s channel. He’s done several off-road bike tours that last 60ish (and longer) days.
I'll second ForestyForest. That dude gets out there. Look up the Maah Daah Hey Trail out in South Dakota as well. I've been wanting to see that.
Ha! We did this ride in August. Mosquitoes out the wazoo the first two nights. Rain, sun and FUN! Thanks for the video, brings back great memories.
Very cool! I guess the benefit of cold weather is no bugs. Stay tuned for more videos, working on them now
That Sony head am is making some amazing imagery. Love the musical accompaniment.
Just the other day, I was thinking, " It's been a long time without Duzer doing a bike tour, and low and behold, we got a brand new series of Duzer on a bike. Early Christmas present.
Ta Da!! Ask and you shall receive!
Thank you for treating us to another adventurous series! I am saving up for a good cross country/ tour bike because your videos have inspired me to do so. Thanks again :D
Hunter Does Videos awesome!!! You’re gonna love xc touring
Just what I needed; a Ryan bike tour.
Ask and you shall receive!
As a youth of 64 years in 2016, I cycled the Purgatory to Moab route on this trail. With sea level lungs, it was difficult at times, but the rewards were surreal. Thanks for the memories! Same time of year, so many similarities are present.
That’s awesome you rode this route, it’s amazing
Wowamia last day was truly biking on the EDGE. A wonderful adventure. Oh, I'm watching it again. I will send money when my grandson shows me how. Your filming is absolutely amazing. Love the travels with your friends. Hope to see you at the Rag.
Thanks so much Jack! I appreciate you watching this!
Ahhh what a way to end my Sunday evening ... Thank you Ryan ... gonna savour every
episode ...
Craig Elliott it’s Sunday midday here! Thanks for watching buddy!
Alas the drone!😭 Loving the adventure, about to bike myself from Custer state park to Mt. Rushmore today after warning up at the lodge here watching your video. Thanks Ryan, great getting your inspirational work while I'm on my x country car/biking trip of us national parks before heading to New Zealand for 3 months of walking the Te Araroa in December. Your are an true inspiration. Thanks Ryan.
Ben Haring damn dude!! Sounds like you’re on the trip of a lifetime!! Enjoy buddy
This video brought me so much joy because it perfectly captured the complete awesomeness of spending time with your close friends in the outdoors!!!
Thanks Logan!
some GREAT looking single track. I have a bunch of friends running and working at Javalina...look forward to seeing that video...maybe Ill see some of my friends. looking forward to Part Two...
Nice! I'm excited for Javelina!
Oh dear! Already love the series! This is a dream trip for me.
It was a dream for sure, stay tuned for more
"I don't know what to eat!" This hut is the 3-Michelin-star of bikepacking. One could easily put on weight with this kind of luxury treatment. Check at the back, you will find the jacuzzi. Big thanks for the book recommendation. Living a life with no regret is one's greatest ambition. Happy Cycling!
We ate like kings for 7 days out there! And enjoy the book, it's so good!
20 miles, in six hours. That's a lot of climbing and defending. Looks like a ton of fun. I'm jealous.
To shake the sleeping self is a really good book. Everything about it makes me miss my bike adventures when I did a coast to coast ride. Love the videos man keep it up.
Such a great book!
Hi Ryan, loving the videos you have been putting on UA-cam, I'm 54 from a small town in North Wales in the uk. I'm just getting into the bikepacking scene and your videos have been very informative for me to get started.
I'm going to start by doing a local three day one soon but my ambition is to do the great divide. Many thanks Nigel Jones 🏴🏴🏴🚴♂️🚴♂️🚴♂️🚴♂️
Small world! A couple of months ago I got the opportunity to ride section 25 of the CT also. The air is definitely thin at 11,000 feet, but I was able to get 10 miles of riding in. The views were absolutely amazing. Such an epic place to MTB.
I wanna ride the entire Colorado Trail someday!
Awesome video. I used to work with Matt at a bike shop in Boulder. One of the nicest, smartest, and positive guys I've ever met...not to mention an endurance lunatic.
Nice!! He's all those things and more! Cheers buddy and thanks for watching
Thanks for taking us along, Ryan! My bucket list keeps growing!
This is a great one for the bucket list, sooo beautiful! Tell Your brother I say hello
Thank you Ryan for all your awesome videos. 🏃 Running, biking and great adventures!
Jeffrey Culpepper and thank you for watching them!!
Van D on a multi day adventure is like a new season of GOT!!! Woot woot
I just wish I had DRAGONS!
Man, what a great video and how lucky you are to have a mate like Matthew. You guys are great. Thanks for doing this.
Good stuff mate on the road again!!!👍🤜🤛🇬🇧🇺🇸
Yep, feels great!
Durango is beautiful!
It's a great little town
The Duz does it again !! I can't wait to see the open desert landscape!!! My favorite. I luv how you include the flora and other creatures of our world big and small.
I love the desert too!! Stay tuned
Just watching you guys having fun out there already makes me happy from this side of the world. Thank you and I promise to finish the whole series to keep up with your joyful heart while doing this bike tour. Stay safe,be blessed. The hut is charming,by the way!
Thanks!! It was such a beautiful ride
Another fantastic video Ryan!! I've already added the Tour of Canyons trip to my bucket list because of you, looks like I may have to add another. Will be looking forward to the next installment.
Tour of canyons is a good one too!! I wanna do all their routes
That is one adventure that I would love to try. I heard about the San Juan Hut system ages ago, first time was probably in early 2000, and definitely need to plan to do that. I absolutely loved Moab, I went mountain biking there in 1994. I no longer own a mountain bike because I retired it from off road use, and gave it to an old retired Navy man who needed a bike. My next bike will be a Hardtail with 27+ tires, similar to what you're using.
Looking forward to the rest of the adventure and views
It's a pretty sweet system of huts...check em out at www.sanjuanhuts.com
And your future bike sounds AWESOME!
I have a Jamis Dragonslayer. It's a great bike for this type of multiday tour. Hard tail is just a little different riding style. More "off the seat" to save the rear end. I like the tubeless 3.0 in tires and steel frame too.
@@OGColorado Sounds like my type of bike. I have had Hardtails back in the mid to late 90's, then two full suspension bikes. Love Hardtails better for my type of riding, because I am no racer, or freerider, but love flow and technical trails.
I am hoping to be able to build up a Santa Cruz Chameleon or Salsa Timberjack with a 130mm travel fork some day. I may have to look into a Jamis also.
All are good options. Another thing about the fatter tires is their ability to cross sandy areas like dry washes in places like Big Bend.
Im so happy to see this video. I watched the tour of the canyons this morning and spent the day researching it. Then this evening ,boom another hut trip video uploaded. Looking forwards to the rest of these. Thanks
What a fun coincidence! I'm hooked on these hut trips!
That was one nice day and a great stocked hut. Can't wait for the next video. Take care and safe cycling, AL
Thanks AL, stay tuned!
Another amazing adventure! Thanks for sharing. Be safe out there.
I'm always safe...mostly ;)
Just made my first trip to our local music school (full time musician) at 10 miles round trip yesterday..technically off road.. sidewalks, bike paths, and quiet back roads.
Very cool, way to go buddy
DAMN. Hard to say what I love most! 1. the napping bee and amazing flower shots 2. the "motorcycle" sounds :) or 3. the shots you took while at this first hut. I simply canNOT wait to meet/see you at Javelina!
yay!!! I'm excited to meet you too
Just subscribed!!!! I stumbled across your channel because of the lasik eye surgery video. I noticed the Colorado flag in the background of the video and was like I need to check this guy out. We are headed to Colorado Thursday and staying through thanksgiving. I have never been so definitely looking forward to it I am dabbling in making UA-cam videos myself and have been gathering content. We are definitely going to film the journey for my Livin Life Outfitters. Anyway watched a few of your videos and I am hooked!!!! Can’t wait to explore the state!
Thanks for subscribing buddy! Enjoy Colorado and good luck with the youtube channel! cheers
This video helped with my packing anxiety for my trip this summer. Now to transfer that anxiety to the navigation stuff, lol
You’re in for a treat, and the navigation is easy
HECK yeah. Great inspiration. Thank you very much. I love these bike packing video series that you do.
Thanks Adam! This was a fun one!
Cool trip! And great gear recommendations. Someday I want to ride the length of the Oregon Trail!
That would be an awesome ride!
Out of all the places you have been this is by far my favorite!!!! Love it!
It's pretty sweet, and gets sweeter every day
Moab is very beautiful. My Grandmother live north of there. We would take the southern route from Iowa just to drive through Moab. We would usually stop and camp in the red sands of Moab. Tent stakes wouldn't hold as the sand was too loose. We would put weights in the corners of the tent to hold the tent up.
Moab is my favorite place on the planet!
Beautiful trail. Wonderful scenery. Great video.
Amazing video! Can't wait to see more of it!
Coming your way!
Thanks for sharing. There is nothing, absolutely nothing, quite so worthwhile as simply messing about on bicycles. Greetings from Downunder.
I agree, bikes bring a lot of joy
New Duzer video! What a gift. :)
YAY! It's a gift for me too
That looked crazy fun, even with the super-thin air!
Enjoying watching your videos on this beautiful Christmas Day before we mountain bike the Jem Trail with Hurricane Rim. We loved the San Juan Hut trip from Durango to Moab! Check out Colorado Back County Biker Hut to Hut trips on the Uncompaghre. It’s another good one! Merry Christmas!
I’ll check that out, thanks!!
Amazing video, Ryan you're my sherpa, you may not know it but I'm riding on your back. Thanks and stay positive!
I'll be your Sherpa any day, thanks for coming along for the ride!
It was worth the wait. Looks like an awesome adventure!! Looking forward to the rest of the videos from this trip. Thanks Ryan
Thanks! Working on the rest of the videos
This one looks fun😃! I am looking forward to it all. Wheeeee!
Stay tuned my man!
Oh, THIS is going to be an awesome series of videos! Thanks, Ryan! This is something I'd love to do by myself, but my better judgment would lead me to inviting at least one pal to ride along -- you just never know what can happen to you waaaay out in the wilderness on your own! Plus, my wife would never allow me to ride this all by myself, nor any long-distance ride where human help is inaccessible. Bike review at the end please? ;-)
Always good to have a pal with you in the middle of nowhere
Awesome episode! And that stream was SOOOOO clear! Holy crap, I've got to do that ride someday.
It was so beautiful!
Sweet single track...gorgeous views...great commentary!! Loved it😎
Thanks Nikki! Stay tuned for more
Great video. Thanks for all of your effort, time and energy you put into making these videos to share with us. I’ve added this to my. I met list. 💚
Thanks! I'm glad that you appreciate the work it takes to make these videos, cause it's A LOT of work!
I haven't, but I think it's all I've ever wanted. That hut system. . . whatttttttt??????!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's a sweet way to ride and have everything taken care of
I love your videos so much. Your positivity is so inspiring. Can't wait to see more!
Thanks!! More on the way!
Such beautiful nature! Colorado is great! Awesome trip! Have fun!
Colorado is stunning this time of year
I've been looking forward to this. Thank you! Maybe next year I can finally get to do this ride.
It's a sweet ride!
@@duzer Update - my group is leaving for this ride Sept. 2nd. I'm sharing this video with peeps on fb etc.
Just yesterday I thought there wasn't a new video from Ryan for some time. Wonder what is he up to... This was awesome. Absolutely beautiful place and a great adventure. It really makes my heart warm and my soul want to just get up and get on a bike and ride to Colorado. The ocean on the way might be a slight problem though... Happy biking Ryan and all the best from the UK!
Get a kayak and paddle over here ;)
I’m not a very good mountain biker, but I wish I was so I could do that!! Although I’d love love love to run it!
That ride looks epic! Added to the list of rides I gotta do. Thanks for another great video Ryan!

Brilliant vid thanks for uploading , love getting out on my bike you’re an inspiration 😀
Happy trails Garry!!
The downhill through the pass reminded me of Walter Mitty longboarding the hill in Iceland. You rock man.
I love that scene!!
Time for a REEB run, I'm thirsty. It must be quite a ride that REEB. If I won the lottery...I'd be driving to Lyons today.
They make such nice bikes!
@@duzer It's difficult to be in Lyons so much and not kick down for one. Maybe one of these days.
Can't wait to see the rest of the videos!
Great! Number 2 came out today if you haven't seen it yet
Another amazing adventure, thanks!
Video and trip look amazing (as always...) but my kids went crazy when you mentioned going to Javelina again (our first), hope to see you out on the trail!
Nice!! Let's make sure and meetup out there!
oh no im late, I have to catch up, colorado trail looks wonderful
Hurry up, catch up buddy! :)
I was in Durango, co for the first time earlier this year. It's beautiful place. I didn't have my bike with me so I rented one. I would bring pair of binoculars if I were you to check out those stars out there.
Binoculars are a great idea!
@@duzer If you have good pair and a dark ski you can see the Orion Nebula and Andromeda Galaxy and many more stars through out the Milky Way.
Nuttins' better than Squirrels Nut Butter!
Don't leave home without it!
If you do, it WILL make you go NUTS!
:) LOL!
You give me hope! Love you man!
Thanks Omare!
I think that's fantastic
This video is so bromantic
Always jealous of your great adventures!

Nice job on the bike commuting! 8 months a year is solid. I'll try to put together a ride sometime in the future
@@duzer thanks!
all my co workers think i am pretty nuts
Especially on rainy days
They have become my favorite
Just needed waterproof booties for my clip ons
And a 1/2 fenders on the front and back
GOLDEN!
Awesome video dude near and dear to my heart I've spent a lot of time at Molas, Coal Bank pass and Silverton and Durango.
Hey Ryan what's the deal with those sheds do you send them $$$ money and they send you a key, how does that work?
that's amazing.... Thanks for another amazing video....
PS, this time of year you had to see some very cold temperatures at night....
Yeah, they cost money, you sign up for a trip on their website, www.sanjuanhuts.com
Comes out to about 100 bucks a day, but that covers 3 meals and all the energy bars you could ever eat
@@duzer That seems like a screaming deal considering you sleep there too..
Keep kicking ass Duzer...
keep doing awesome things Ryan!
I will!
I downloaded the Audible version of "To Shake the Sleeping Self." Very engaging. It definitely is a quest story.
Boom. First viewer comment. I have been waiting my whole life for this!!! Looks like fun. You rock!
Jared Reynolds No....YOU ROCK!
Great!
Thank Mother Nature for the beauty
Looks like an epic trip 😎
It was!
Ryan, thanks for sharing these adventure with us,also with your friend Matthew.I am going to check out the book,i love a good adventure story Funny you are bringing your razor with you, unlike me you don!t have much to shave.Stupid question how do you keep it charged? You guys have a safe ride, and thanks for sharing these adventure.🌍✌
The razor stays charged for about 10 days, pretty sweet
Awesome 😎- what fun!
So fuuun!
Yaaaas 🤙🏽back to the adventure
Welcome back!
What's for dinner??? Ibuprofen!!!! Hhmmmmmmmmm. Great video Ryan! DD
that's desert!
Awesome video series! Such beautiful scenery. Weird question though, what type of eyeglasses is your buddy Matt wearing? I'm talking about the ones with the clear plastic frames that I assume he needs to see, not his sunglasses. Thanks.
Thanks! Mathew says the glasses are Zenni. Cheap too, 25 bucks
thank you...
Thank you for watching!
Awesome country !¬ Love those white rocks and that mountain stream. No soaring eagles ?
No eagles on this day, but we found some fun critters later on
Good stuff man. Those flowers were lupine not mountain bluebells. Beautiful....
You sure about that? I know my lupines, these looked quite different. Either way, both are Beautiful!
99% sure. The leaves were a dead giveaway. I'm pretty good with wildflower ID having been a naturalist for years. Obviously still make my fair share of mistakes.
Will have to go check out Reeb Bikes in Lyons!
They're AWESOME!
Dude! Why are you so dang cool? An inspiration.
Well dang, I'm not sure ;)
GREAT VIDEO 👍 got the book
Allen Jones nice, you’re gonna love it!
