One of the most beautiful visions of 1940s films was that of Veronica Lake. Veronica was known for her peek-a-boo hairstyle and was an iconic image of film noirs. Some of her famous movies of the time included 'This Gun for Hire,' 'The Hour Before Dawn,' 'Hold That Blonde,' and 'Out of this World.' Veronica was a big-screen name in the 1940s, and her success in acting seemed unstoppable.
By the early 1950s, Lake's career had hit the skids. Still suffering from schizophrenia and in a state of paranoia, she turned to alcohol to relieve herself from the burden. This only added to her deteriorating mental state. With the stress of three broken marriages, an overbearing stage mother, a manic depressive personality, and a self-destructive addiction to liquor, she pushed herself over the edge. After 1952, she would make only two more films, both grade B horror flicks. The beautiful superstar with the peekaboo hair who entertained and inspired so many never received the professional help that would have saved her from the mental suffering. She would endure it alone. She eventually frequented cheap hotels in New York City and worked as a bartender, where she obtained a steady supply of alcohol. She never revealed her true identity, and even her co-workers were in the dark about her glamorous past.
By the late 1960's she had reached rock bottom, holing up in her apartment out of paranoid fears that the FBI was following her and tapping her phone. Those who knew her in the '60s said that the once great beauty had turned into a worn-out mess, with rotting teeth, unwashed hair, and the pasty complexion of a bloated alcoholic. Saranac Lake native, James Quigley, recalls an encounter with her while working at a popular New York City bar at #1 Fifth Avenue in the '60s. He introduced himself as a Saranac Laker, and Veronica seemed happy to meet someone from her old hometown. Jim said, "I went to the bar at #1 Fifth Avenue, a very chic and popular bar for New Yorkers. Veronica was tending bar, and when I told her I was from Saranac Lake, she cried, kissed me and continued to work. What a moment!"
In the early 1970s, Veronica made a brief return to the spotlight with her autobiography publication, which earned her enough cash to relocate to the British Isles. She married for a fourth time- to an English sea captain, a commercial fisherman known as "Captain Bob," but that soon ended in divorce. In early 1973, she returned to the states. According to the doctors who treated her, she was already "pretty far along" with an acute case of hepatitis. She was not long in Saranac Lake before she was admitted to Will Rogers Hospital. According to her doctor in Vermont, Warren Beeken, Saranac Lake did not have the resources to treat her and the Medical Center in Burlington. On June 26, 1973, she was transferred to the Fletcher Allen Hospital.
Her presence in the hospital was not publicized- because, according to her publicist William Roos- "Frankly, I didn't think she was going to die." He was not aware of the extreme state of her medical condition. According to Dr. Beeken, her case of hepatitis had persisted for some time before she entered the Fletcher Allen Hospital, and her situation had deteriorated rapidly.
Early on July 7, 1973, Veronica Lake passed away, alone and forgotten at 50.

I think she has one of the most tragic Hollywood stories.
I think Marilyn had it the worst.......
@@jennifersun2638 sadly, she didn't
I adored her in "I Married a Witch!" She was absolutely adorable in it. I was in Middle School when I saw it and adopted her peekaboo hairstyle as my first fashion statement when I was 13. How tragically her life ended and was just overall breaks my heart. The suffering she endured must have been unbearable. I hope she is at peace now. Wherever her spirit is, I hope she knows how greatly adored she was and still is to this day and not forgotten. Tonight I will pay tribute to her memory and wear her peekaboo hairstyle tonight when I go out.
It's that many people turn to alcohol/drugs as a coping mechanism for various mental disorders. She must have struggled greatly to die so young.
Always makes me wonder what these girls went through in Hollywood to end up like this
I bet TOOOOOO MUCH
fame is overrated........
People with mental health issues can be more dynamic and to do tend to take more chances and therefore end up successful and famous. i don’t think it is just what they experience in Hollywood
So sad. Before mental health care and medication were available we lost a lot of great artists. 😔
Still do..... 😔
Her Mom send her to a theater school for therapy? Veronica needed a therapist not theater school.
The mother was not really using it for “therapy” but “hoping” it away.
If Veronica had gotten help she would have better off in her life and career.
Certainly, being under a doctor's care would have helped, but I wonder, did they really have any meds, besides sedatives, to help schizophrenia back then?
@@lisellesloan3191 You got a point. Maybe they had medicine back then I hope medicine was available back then.
That’s if they were allowed to. These stars had harsh contracts. 🤦🏽♀️ Major stigma back then.
She’s still a stunning woman, theres only one Veronica Lake.
Her autobiography is really worth reading. I read it when I was In junior high. She has a wry sense of humor. I remember thinking that she seemed intelligent and that she was a good writer. It was definitely better than most celebrity autobiographies. She probably could have had a career as a writer.
It was ghost written.
She was absolutely stunning. So underrated. She looked like a runway model before there was such a thing. It is sad that she was all alone at the end. RIP.
Immediately liked! Veronica Lake is the reason I still have my peek a boo hair style :D I LOVE HER
Her beauty and style will be forever iconic!!!!!
Sounds like a longtime trauma sufferer. God knows what happened to her throughout her life and her time in Hollywood.
Poor woman. Hope she's at peace.
A very sad story. Movie stars back in the day were so vulnerable and often isolated when they had mental illness, which only added to the pressures of being in the limelight.
Heartbreaking. She was so beautiful & gifted
Very sad story😢. She was so beautiful & talented to spite being pushed into show biz by a stage mum who could’ve helped her more by getting treatment for her schizophrenia, not acting lessons! She died so young & out of her 4 children only 1 cared enough to get her ashes? One of my all time fave films w/ her is “So I Married a Witch” she was so funny & beautiful in that film! Poor woman, breaks my heart😢💔. Jet 🧡🎸🎶⚡️🦇😻🐈⬛
Tragic story indeed. So sad. Also sad was the life of Gene Tierney who despite being so beautiful and talented had a life full of pain and disappointments . Beauty and financial success are both fleeting.
Wow thats intense she was so beautiful.
Thank you for doing this video. I love Veronica Lake. I didn't know any of this information! She was my childhood idol! It is heart breaking to hear her story!
Thank you 😊 Laura.
So sad! She had to go through all this without therapy:(
It is sad to see the demise of any person. It seems to be more so when a person has talent and great potential. The problems become amplified when it is viewed through the public eye. I will definitely check out her movies to see what I am missing. Thanks for the video!
Her favorite perfume was Evening In Paris I read. 💭🧚♀️💭🧚♀️💭🧚♀️💭
I was literally looking at buying her biography two days ago! So interesting this came out Right afterwards. Yeah, her life just didn't end up well, it's so sad.
Such an intense story! She was beautiful.
Very very sad to hear about her life. I hope she is at peace now.
Really like these kinds of videos. Would like to see videos on Ginger Rogers and Rita Hayworth.
I like the old "Film Noir" Movies best with Veronica Lake, since my Teenage Days. Such elegant, and with Style, her Dresses, always have been.
This broke my heart ❤️
So interesting. Thank you for the great video!
Laura this was excellent. Could you do stories on Vera Ellen , Betty Hutton or Rosemary Clooney? They all had challenging periods in their lives.
Hello Laura,
I really enjoyed this video on Veronica Lake! So sad of what happened to her! She was a very beautiful woman.
Thank you for sharing!
Inna ♥️♥️♥️💄👠🎀🍒🎄🦩
What happened to all these Hollywood celebrities, casting agent and directors??? They couldn’t show up for her funeral? To me that shows they felt guilty of not doing enough to help when they could. Sad.
Thank you!! I requested her.
She was so gorgeous.
There is an interview here on UA-cam that she did with Dick Cavett in 1973, just after her book came out. I watched it after I watched this video. Such a sad story. I would recommend watching that interview. It was done just 4 years after the Walk of Fame moment. Thank you for this video.
She still looked good in that late interview about her book, after all she went through she still looked good looking but older than her age. If she was well mentally she would have been dominating the film industry and she would age gracefully. You could hear her voice sound like a crack addict or an alcoholic. She was a sweetheart.
YT has a TV interview with her from 1952, soon after her Hollywood career went phfttt. She was 29 and looked 45.
I don't know if she was ever actually diagnosed with schizophrenia. I read that she was abusive towards her children, I don't know if that's true, and that's why only Michael wanted to attend her funeral.
Such a sad story.
veronica lake was one of my favorites i loved her in i married a witch
She was most times a loner. She seems to have too few friends in her social world. She had nobody for emotional support.
I have a niece who is a doppelganger of Veronica Lake. Even expressions and gestures are similar. Watching Veronica's interview in 1970s saddened me. It was like watching my niece in her senior years. As result, I am now praying for my niece to have a good future and happiness, be always surrounded by relations and friends.
Great video 💗
Hi, I would absolutely love if you would do a video about the life of Eartha kit. She is my all-time favorite actress 🌹🖤🤩
She was a singer mostly not really an actress
Geez that’s really sad 😞
She always have that mysterious look like she knew something she was very stunning
Jane Russel would be interesting if you have time.
Jane is such a doll!!!
Or hedy lamar
I was just thinking about this actor and then I see you this excellent video
In them late 1960’s we saw her working as a waitress at the George Washington Hotel in NYC
That’s crazy what was she like??
Geez, so tragic
This story makes me so sad…I’ve found her to be the most gorgeous of the actresses of the 40s period. She’s an iconic woman and it’s a shame she never got the help and her passing was so undignified…I would have liked to have met her…
Idk who she is but man what a sad life!
Hopefully she's in a better place
She was beautiful!!!
could you find out how her hair was done in the early years? How about Barbara Hale (Perry Mason)? Thanks!
Her story sounds a little similar to Louise Brooks especially when she left Hollywood
Next can you do Josephine Baker?
Could you please do a video on Jean Harlow?
nice video
This has to be one of the worst stories ever from Hollywood. This woman lived just to suffer. Great beauty and talent, all wasted. And to think that if she recieved health treatment, her story could be brighter and happier...
So sad
So sad what happened to Veronica, my 86-year-old father thought she was gorgeous and had photos of her on his bedroom wall when he was a teenager, along with photos of Hedy Lamarr and Lucille Ball. Kim Basinger played a Veronica Lake lookalike in the movie L.A. Confidential, thought she did a good job. Other Hollywood beauties who have had tragic lives are Gene Tierney and Frances Farmer.
Wow so sad!!
So devastating 💔
How sad!!! Oh how sad...
Do you have anything on her beauty secrets or morning routine?
Three shots of Vodka first thing upon rising.
@@brkitdwn stfu
Sad
How about Linda Darnell, she died young...
So sad.
This was entertaining but sad 😞
Hi Laura, Veronika lake wow! She's very glam, for your hair aboveall than make up and dress!! Different beauty, anybody never talks about her but she has very style and talent!
Do a Susan Hayward video when you can ♥️ please and thank you
So so sad. I understand her pain.
Poor woman, what she must have been through.
Thank you for video. Could you please make a video about her makeup products 💞 xx
I refuse to look like a bloated alcoholic. Love her
They could never make you hate you Veronica
She looked like a modern day ig “influencer”
Not at all
@@chrystianaw8256 are you kidding? Hahaha
@@MissFitDaniNicole I think she looked a bit more elegant/glamorous than and IG influencer
She will always be my ultimate Hollywood crush - Ms VL.
It’s sad how her mom didn’t even care about her 💔
I doubt she had schizophrenia
A few years ago I saw an old interview with her. I think it was in the 70's. Her hair was cut very short. Kinda like a pixie cut. She said that she hated the pic a boo hair style that as soon as an she could she had it cut short.
My poor poor veronica
💔
It’s so sad how Hollywood can chew you up and spit u out smh
Can you please do a video on Sophia Loren, Gina Lollabrialla, Jimmy Stewart, Steve McQueen, and Robert Taylor?
Greetings from Scotland Laura Jane. Av always liked actor Debra Paget. Seemed to be typcast as a Native American chief's daughter. She did dye her hair blonde for an Elvis movie i think.
Quanto mi piaci 👑✌
Love veronica
her peak-a-boo hair style inspired Aaliyah's Swoop hairstyle.
What a phoney place Hollywood was
Beautiful name
Im changing mine to corrine ingrith lake
Beautiful hair color
jane russel next ? if you can
Paramount absolutely squandered her talents and wasted her in stupid flops. She was a wonderful actress, she even played Peter Pan onstage!!!!
You have quite a classic look yourself.
💯💋🇮🇹✌
