Why do filmmakers hate UA-cam? James Cameron has hired someone immediately after watching their UA-cam video. But if you’re posting your artsy film on UA-cam, and working with UA-cam’s “retention rules” doesn’t that mean you can’t make your film the way you intend?
We honestly don’t know if UA-cam is a good or bad place for new filmmakers, but we wanted to explore these ideas with Sven Pape. He has edited films that have been to Sundance and Cannes, but he is best known for his UA-cam channel ThisGuyEdits. Sven is the rare content creator who has a foot both in the UA-cam world and in the traditional film world. And so we wanted to have the conversation.

A perception orchestrated by... *gasp* Vimeo! Oh and all traditional media platforms slowly losing audience share to UA-cam. Love this channel--every intro is an absolute banger and gets you hooked for the full conversation. Terrific insights from Sven!

You can use a preview of the video as a hook. You can either have the preview as a separate video or right before the beginning of the film. As soon as the preview is done, the video can start.

There’s a pretty clear few reasons why UA-cam is not taken seriously:
1 - There is no barrier for entry. ANYONE can upload something, and there doesn’t appear to be any curation of who gets to produce anything.
2 - Movies are, generally, perceived as art while UA-cam is perceived as CONTENT. Both have crossover, but often don’t.
Your little sibling’s cat video taken on a random cell phone shot with no clear motivation, meaning, or direction gets 25 million views. It changes nothing about a person’s life except for getting a slight chuckle.
Additionally, look at the most popular channels on UA-cam vs the most popular films. What do Mr Beast and Marvel have in common? Where do they differ? Look at the most respected UA-cam creators vs the most respected filmmakers: Scorsese vs Dude Perfect (?). The platform seems to appeal to different sensibilities.
However, if I were in film school, the process of making films - from pre to post production - gives less opportunity to practice and hone your craft. I sense that there is less opportunity to get better at what you’re doing because you may be doing it less than someone rigorously editing videos for 1-2x/week release.
3 - Not paying for the content you watch, and it’s effect on the viewer’s expectation. Great films seem to reward viewers patience. Great UA-cam videos seem to reward viewers impatience - and impulsivity. If I don’t pay to watch these videos, why should I wait and see what happens next?
    Click.
And how do I know I can trust that the person who is making what I’m watching can be trusted to make something intentional and worth watching?
I love making videos and am learning so much all the time. I consume resources like your podcast rabidly. Thanks for making stuff, it has been a huge influence on my journey!

6:22 I feel like this has already happened! At a much smaller scale though. I immediately thought of channels like Marble Hornets...granted their videos catered to the horror game/found footage niche so it didn't garner as much interest, and when the channel was still posting, it was around the time when UA-cam content creation wasn't even a true concept compared to how we see it now. I think they were ahead of their time.
That channel is a great example of crafting a narrative from short-form videos that makes you want to watch more and dive deep into the lore

    *unpopular opinion*
Filmmakers focus on making long format stories that they want to last for decades that are watched time and time again and shared with friends, family, date nights, loneliness and much more. People see Beasts 50 Million views and only focus on money and likes, a couple of the videos may be continuously viewed but the majority of them will not even be remembered. The quality may say authenticity to some but for others it may say "i dont really care about quality, i just want views" if everybody copied what he does the uniqueness of his style would become generic. i think it works for beast because his niche, his personality and him and his friends are all elements that cant really be replicated. we shouldn't focus on algorithm and money, chase making something timeless........in my opinion lol

The only thing I wanna clarify here is that UA-cam Originals actually did pull from a lot of outside talent. Most famously was Cobra Kai with Jon Hurwitz. Originals largely failed because the UA-cam ecosystem had people trained for a different kind of consumption method & the main value draw of UA-cam RED (now YT Premium) at the time was the lack of ads for normal YT videos. The main value proposition was ad free viewing experience & most people were plenty entertained by what was already on UA-cam. They also largely had their long form content habits formed on other platforms. It was an uphill battle for change people's viewing habits without cutting into the bottom line for UA-cam's other content.

Well this throws light on the different expectations that the traditional platform and the digital platform build to fulfill us. What I think is missing and is rightly pointed out by hiller's example in dark knight is that silent exposition that requires a keen sense of attention.Good movies do that without us realising the fact that we are crying at a scene and all the built up tension is released. What i took away from both your experiences is that UA-cam is actually a private experience but we act as if it's public in our psychology rather a theater is a public experience but people cry that bringing their family to decorate the occasion isn't that strange? We need a decorated private experience that can happen on UA-cam which hasn't been figured out yet. Let's try our best future editors 🙏🙏.

I think an episodic format might be a good way to feature a movie on UA-cam. Similar to what Marvel did with their limited series. 6-8 12-20 minute videos, cliffhanger at the end that seamlessly goes to the next video.
Would be cool if UA-cam made a short films section, similar to what they’re starting to do with podcasts.

Great podcast! While UA-cam is a great place to put up your content, I just wish it to be more content creator-friendly and handle copyright issues well. There are many folks whose videos were taken down by UA-cam just because some "fake, duplicate" creator requested them to do so and claimed copyright.
Twitter is often filled with such complaints and UA-cam "can't do anything" as per their "policy". Hope this scenario changes soon.

in photography at art schools / university there was a quite similar discussion around 20 years ago between commercial/fashion vs reportage, art photography. The commercial side was deeply hated and trashed, they all wanted to do 1:1 what the Bernd and Hilla Becher did, Gursky or the typical social porn photography ( white dudes going to then still super poor East Europe or to a tribe in Africa or rural India and doing reportage about how awful this is… with their Leica or Hasselblad (important everything else they saw also as trash). Shure after they finished art school - no one was able to do it as a photographer - no one needs another Bechers or Gursky. The money was in the commercial world, where photographers with an artshool background where non-existent.
