I started to listen to GG as a teenager like Tull, Genesis, Yes, ELP, Allman Bros, Hendrix, and saw them live too. 50 years later Dude, I still love them...kudos to you for enveloping them and their talents.
Love the message at the end of this reaction. Venture out and TRY NEW THINGS! This not only goes for music. It goes for food, art, books, and more. Do things you’ve never done, step out of your comfort zone. Live life for what it is: an ADVENTURE of discovery!
Phil Shulman is the lead singer on this, he left in 1972 and seriously his contribution to the group is woefully overlooked......this song in particular shows one of the many flavors these guys musically had. So very glad you dig them!
I played that song for my audition to get into the music program in college. Still one of my all time favorite. Check out the live version on Playing the Fool!
The live versions are often quite different from the studio arrangements. This song is a great example of that! Check out the live stuff! Everyone will tell you this
One of my favorite more "gentle" Gentle Giant songs. I hope you get to doing some reviews of "In A Glass House". Many flavors on that album similar to this. Love what you're doing. Carry on!
Chod, I'm 62 & pleased to tell you I delight in discovering new music to this day. I never really dug rap & hip hop till my youngest daughter did for me what we've been suggesting to you, so yeah, add another musical genre to love. You also reminded me that beforehand I mentioned it's ok to have a tie for top band between Yes & Zeppelin and for me my top three tie includes GG, much as I love Floyd. BTW you have shamed me into getting a GG t-shirt after all these years. That's an awesome freakin shirt.
Hey man, if you read these comments *please* I would love for you to check out a live video they did called ‘Runaway / Experience’, which is a combination of two of their most fun songs live. If not no problem and I’m just glad you’re discovering this wonderful band! I’m jealous of you hearing it for the first time
As you know, GG has a lot of music that really grooves. This tune picks up some of their Medieval atmospheres, but they can get a riff going and really jam! Sophisticated music deserves a serious listen.
💗 I love how they use a lot of different instruments. Right now in my life I am trying to fix damage instruments that I find at estate sales. While working on them, I learn a lot about them.
Ahh... Should`t have stoped! "Funny Ways" and "Why Not?" ought to be experienced in sequence! Kinda show GG`s prowess and capacity to intrincate and power up music! Geniuses!!!
I actually prefer the live version on their live album Playing the Fool. But I feel that way about all of GG. I do not know if there was a live video of this. One of my drum teachers once asked me if I wanted to play music for the rest of my life and actually get better. I said that I did. He told me that I needed to listen, learn, and play music that I didn't like, because the more broad my music vocabulary was the more musical my playing would be.
I have an idea you might get the band "Gong", They were usually considered part of the Canterbury scene due to their connections with Soft machine and with Steve Hillage who played with them after Karn I think. I prefer the more instrumental tracks such as "Isle of everywhere" as a route in. Jazzy and psychedelic at the same time and right there in the mid 70's Proggy sweet spot. ua-cam.com/video/CrL_SMDYhFc/v-deo.html
Oh Chod man you are right on the money, these guys are extremely and ridiculously talented. As mentioned below you must listen to the live versions of this, try this one - ua-cam.com/video/kzDCfnBhinw/v-deo.html as a musician myself I am really and continuously knocked out by the calibre of parts they write for each instrument involved in their tracks, I mean listen to the violin parts in this, absolutely beautiful, and that is high grade stuff my man as I know you definitely understand.. well done bud and good job selling the experience..
GG is so far ahead of Led Zepplin (spelling?) it's not even funny. By the way, that sounds like a GG cover band - not the GG I've heard in concert, both live and on YT. I'm almost positive it IS a GG cover band, because the mix is totally different from the same song as I heard it live and also live on YT. When GG plays the song, they hit those "my ways are strange" parts a lot harder - more distorted and loud guitar, bass, and the other instruments are louder, too. There were other things in this recording that showed it was a cover band, too - the violin and cellos parts were different. I'm not saying this cover band didn't do it well, but it definitely did not sound like GG. By the way, I greatly appreciate how you tell people to experience music outside of their own "zone."
A decent tune though not my taste! I know a few reactors love this band so I’m going to try to listen to more of Gentle en, I mean Giant before I have an opinion about them. Try reacting to more WHO tunes and they may grow on you!

I love Gentle Giant! I think you’d also like PFM!

Yes! And 'Acquiring The Taste' and 'Octopus' .... mmmmm good stuff!!!
In a Glass House, yes! And Three Friends in 3 reviews, 3 x 2 songs, to get the idea of this great concept album properly.

Another great reaction to a great song by a great band! I look forward to your reactions, m8.
Thanx again Chod and cheers from Australia!

LZ will always be your #1 Rock group. All the others bands/combos are in a different genre. Your allowed to have multiple favs.
Great music, great reaction, great message, cheers, Chod!
In addition to being a classic, this track is notable for having been extensively sampled on "Strange Ways" by Madvillain.
and many of you will know this song is sampled on Madvillains "Strange ways"
This was sampled on Madvillainy in the song Strange Ways, if you didn't know.
Live versions of Funny Ways - seek them out.
They're waiting for you...
I was a big early Genesis fan
And just happened to go to a concert with liked minded people.
I liked all of the songs on their debut album. And you haven't even reacted to one of my favourites "Why Not?".
Listen to PLAYING THE GAME, Gentle Giant on The Power and The Glory.
Good Choice Chod.
Gets deep down on this end.

Where did you find the GG Free Hand t-shirt?
It’s on their gentle giant website. They actually just released these
Pantagruel's Nativity
by Gentle Giant
This one is soooooooo much better live!
Why Not? Yes, try the track Why Not. Why Not!
You need to hear some modern prog.

Justjp has that T.
Took me about 3 or 4 times listening to Radiohead before I got it. Your ear has to be trained to hear something different.

Meh
Never liked crap or chip shop music. To be honest haven't listen to it much.
