Ah yes Supertramp...the group NEVER mentioned with the best ? I will go to my grave wondering what is wrong with people and their taste in music. SICK ! Tramp fans know what I mean.............Peace and Love
Can't wait for "Rudy" from this album. I'm a fan since the middle 70's and never been disappointed by Supertramp! I love also their two next albums "Crisis? What Crisis?" and "Even in the Quietest Moments" wish contains gems too!
A story with a beginning and an end about a man ( Rudy ) sung by the two great voices of Supertramp. A slow build up resulting in a climax ending slow again. A real masterpiece.
Definitely would like you to react to the whole album, as it is fantastic. Indeed their best. Great reaction. For me, it is top-tier Supertramp. 5 golden records.
Thanks! Very tempting, people are building it up for sure...yea I may wanna reconsider my 4 rating, but just know that unfortunately when I'm giving the rating, I've already forgotten a lot of the song, just too much to remember in 1 listen, especially these more complex masterpieces! Plus I don't have their whole body of work in my mind to compare/contrast it to...
Other great songs by them are 'waiting so long' and 'don't leave me now ' from their final album in their original setup (with Roger Hodgson) 'Famous last words'. You really should listen to them live on 'Paris'. You'll hear them at their absolute best.
I have been fortunate enough to have seen Supertramp “The Tramp” Live 3 times. Their live shows are a spectacle and brilliant. Each member is a musical genius. Rick Davies is my favorite keyboards player and John Helliwell is favorite Sax player. He is a blast to watch live. The bass and drummer are awesome and Roger’s guitars are superb. The only live show I put above Supertramp is Pink Floyd, who I have seen 4 times.
@@retroreactions.... I'm 69 and have been going to shows since 1967, most all the greatest legendary bands in over 300 concerts. I've been very fortunate.
This would be my second favorite song by them next to the title track of this album... Check out "Crime of the Century". "Dreamer" is another great classic as well.
@@retroreactions.... well, that's up to you. It's not a conceptual album as such, but there are at least four all-time great classic songs on here. "Bloody Well Right" coming up right after this, is one of them.

For me this album is their best, then Even in the Quietest Moments the Breakfast in America third. Saw them live four times. Up there with Rush and the Eagles for top live act
Love your insights Brandon. Rick Davies and Roger Hodgson (singer on School) were so talented and creative on their keyboards that it's barely noticeable that there's very little guitar in their music - although Hodgson is also extremely talented on the guitar when he does play, as in Goodbye Stranger.
This is 'The Logical Song's alter ego, being the experience of a non boarding school, whereas in The Logical Song "they sent me away". Spot on with the conformity, I was 16 when the album came out and it still resonates. Unfortunately the British education system has now swung back to cookie cutter schooling after a more child centred period in the 90s.
Supertramp another great band indeed ... if you get a chance, please react to 'Golden Earring', Dutch rock band, released the album Moontan in 1973 - the song title -RADAR LOVE
I've been a Supertramp fan since I was 15 (36 years ago) and this song has always been a favourite of mine. The blend of elegance, emotion and depth is intoxicating. I can't count the times I've let rip to this masterpiece. 1 suggestion for the future (if you haven't already done it) the title track of Brother Where you Bound? Featuring David Gilmour! 😁 Keep up the good work
@@retroreactions.... Yup, it's the 1st album released after Roger Hodgson left so they needed a guitarist. The title track is long and, I think, really awesome. Epic and very interesting. I look forward to hearing your reaction 😉
I like how you are really getting into the actual sound. Reactions are so much better when they're not just "wow I like it." You are doing a deep dive, and I appreciate that.
I went to see the band live when they were touring the album "Crime of the Century " (I think 1974?) at Newcastle City Hall because of the single "Dreamer" that's on the album and School was a standout track on said album, now at 66 it's good to see young people getting to appreciate it.
This song I am familiar with and quite enjoy, but Roger Hodgson's explanation of its meaning stands out most to me: "...it’s what they don’t teach us in schools that creates so much confusion in our being. They don’t really prepare us for life in terms of teaching us who we are on the inside. They teach us how to function on the outside and to be very intellectual, but they don’t tell us how to act with our intuition or our heart or really give us a real plausible explanation of what life’s about." Man, how badly did those British teachers from Hodgson's and Roger Waters's generation treat these poor kiddos?! I know many of those schoolmasters were WW2 vets who had a difficult time integrating back into society, but that's no excuse to take it out on the next generation. Yikes.

Hi there, Brandon! I had this album. Always liked this song. If you haven’t heard tracks from their Breakfast in America album, beyond their hits, you should investigate. It’s considered prog, but it’s more accessible to people like myself who can’t get into super prog bands like King Crimson and some of ELP and Yes.
Good evening! Really great song...Seems I missed so much to discuss the first time around. I've heard the 4 famous tracks off the Breakfast album so far. I assume the rest is just as good...
In the movie Little Darlings, the Piano instrumental is extended and it is imho the best part of this awesome song. The first album I ever heard this on was from their Paris tour and that entire album is probably their greatest work...but again, in my oppinion.
Great opening track from a prog album masterpiece. These guys were exceptionally talented & their style completely unique. Every song is phenomenal, impossible to recommend favourites because they all are, enjoy the album. 😊
SUPERTRAMP, "SCHOOL". Despite the time apart from Crime of The Century, too Breakfast in America. The two albums blended with each other perfectly. more "CRIME OF CENTURY" definitely worth your time and enjoy if you choose.
One of the greatest prog rock songs from the beast that is Supertramp. They say that Crime of the Century is not a concept album but there are elements of it within, making it similar to the likes of Pink Floyd's album "Another Brick in the Wall". The album has existential, anti-establishment and the quest for self-fulfillment themes and is best listened to from beginning to end. "Rudy", the main character is disillusioned and disinterested in the idea of conformity rather than an expected education in "School"; these feelings lead him to further rebel in "Bloody Well Right". As we move through the songs, shy Rudy is unable to fulfill his dreams and becomes further and further disillusioned with life and humanity, diving into escapism and eventually madness. As morbid as this all sounds, it is meant to be taken in a satirical fashion as a warning to this possibility and to prevent this, humanity needs to concentrate on what is good about us and what we are capable of: Love, compassion, selflessness.
I’m new to the song reaction videos on here; just a few months maybe. I’m glad I came across your channel. I think your process and analyses are unique and follow my own in the way I feel and think about music. Most songs resonate first musically and then lyrically; although there are exceptions. The majority of people who try first reactions either talk through the song and attempt to be comedic or comment on aspects of the video instead of the song. Either way, it’s obvious they totally miss the mark. There are a few who do well. Also, you’re the first to have commented on a post; 5 months out, yet! Cheers to that! Fan here; subscribed. I’m working my way through your repertoire, as it were. Lol. I look forward to your future posts.
Hello again David! I'm glad you found my channel too! Thanks so much for your support and compliments. I'm trying hard here to have a great channel! Hope you find many song picks that you like in my past reactions. Have a wonderful week, and see you soon.....in the past!!! 🙂
This album is to be listened song by song in order. Hodgson and Davies apparently denies that it is a conceptual album but for me it is following Rudy in his struggles moving along. If you continue with the next song on the album Bloody Well Right and moves on song by song you can decide for yourself. The next album Crisis What Crisis and then Even In The Quiets Moments are not as monumental as Crime of The Century but for me also very good album and them of course Breakfast in America. Actually the following two albums after Breakfast in America are well done
@@retroreactions.... it definitively is. A song that you can just listen to alone is Fool’s Overture. Almost 11 minutes, well worth it. The song is from the album Even in the Quiets moment. The title track from that album is nice as well… but then I’m a big Supertramp fan since mid 70s, and rate all songs between 7-10 so… 🤷♂️ (note, their first two albums from 1970 -1971 called Supertramp and Indelibly Stamped ain’t worth to dig into before you’ve listen to the others in full. They swapped all members else Hodgson and Davies after these albums and then came the unmistakable Supertramp sound)
@@retroreactions.... You've just done School which is a fantastic opener for an album and I like the way that on vinyl it seques in the next track so well. It's difficult to score this album as it's one of my all-time greats, so I like it all, but having said that, the sixth track 'Rudy' is a standout for its deeply touching story of someone feeling alone and inadequate in a big wide world.
AT LAST! All reactions to Supertramp I've seen are all to some song from "Breakfast in America", which was their best-selling album commercially, chiefly due to "The Logical Song", which was a huge hit. Don't get me wrong, it's a very good album and I like it a lot, too, but "very good" is not the same thing as "masterpiece". The title of "masterpiece" goes to two other Supertramp albums: "Crime of the Century" (where "School" is from) and "Even in the Quietest Moments" (though I find the album between these two, "Crisis? What Crisis?", very unfairly underrated, with precious moments like "Lady", "A Soapbox Opera", and "Another Man's Woman" with its terrific jazzy ending --- not to mention that "Crisis? What Crisis?" has one of the best cover pictures ever!). I can't wait for you to do "Rudy", arguably their best song ever and definitely the most complex; the simple but hypnotic and extremely effective "Dreamer"; the charming and elegant "From Now On" (I still remember it every Monday morning!); and the epic "Fool's Overture", which made me and all my friends floored on the first listen back in the day! Oh, and the trademark falsetto vocalist is the great *Roger Hodgson,* who later left the band, though Rick Davies with his piano and his tenor voice did a great job, too.
I'm different than the rest LOL, well mostly because I've usually already heard a lot of the huge songs that they get to react to...Darn hate when they split up....thanks for the info....alot of ST ahead for me!
@@retroreactions...., at least it was an amicable departure, without any acrimony and maintaining the mutual respect between Rick and Roger. No bitter rivalries, no resentment, no accusations. It was just that they had drifted apart, Roger had other plans both musically and in his personal life, and both felt that the old chemistry wasn't working any more. Rick and his bandmates Doug Ferguson (bassist), Bob Siebenberg (drummer), and John Helliwell (sax player) still made a couple of relatively successful albums without Roger before retiring. Roger still tours a lot, but the repertoire is still almost solely old Supertramp, not much of solo works. Rick has been bravely fighting cancer for some years; he's almost 80 years old now and unfortunately it seems that he won't be here for long, but I'll always be thankful for his awesome musical legacy.
Tough to do on a reaction channel without huge cuts in the music, but one day, after Ive reacted to any others off it, I will listen on my own straight through.... thanks!
🎼From this album two great songs you need to listen "Hide in your shell" from Roger and also "If everyone is listening". Try also the next album "Crisis! what crisis? " from 1975 that were a bit underrated who got some of the same ingredients than this album. Main known songs "Ain't nobody but me" but I really prefer the Roger song "Soapbox Opera" and I advise you strongly "Lady" that got a Dreamer feel, as well as "Another man's woman" by Rick, in a Rudy mood 😎 On the next "even in the quietest moments" you heard this main title and the Fool's Overture. Check also the famous "Give a little bit" one of their most played song, particularly in live. Then another long song called "From now on" by Rick Davies, I must admit I love even more is last piano song called "Downstream". And finally don't forget the spiritual, "Babaji" by Roger 🙏🎶
I plan to cover their entire discography! Here's my ST playlist in case you missed any!: ua-cam.com/play/PL7SqQkBAxc6auYQTxn4UJjl__7lQ7rxyb.html&si=N13jwLPAFQIx8Ect
Sure, and I forgot talking about Breakfast in America, who got the obvious songs "Logical song" (not on your list) you already listened? , but also "Gone Hollywood", a great opener with a progressive feel. "Lord is it mine" a wonderful deep piano Ballad from Roger. And of course the unavoidable "Take the long way home" that you may have heard somehow 😎
Yes, I've heard Logical and Long Way MANY times, love both! But Goodbye Stranger was my favorite for years before I started the deep dive here on the channel. I added your votes for GH and LIIM....
Oh, thank you Retro for reacting to one of my all-time favourite songs!! Please do also check out Supertramp's debut album (playlist: ua-cam.com/video/uQSl-FyiwDs/v-deo.html), a prog masterpiece, little known by the masses. I suggest you listen to it all, paying special attention to Words Unspoken, Maybe I'm a Beggar, Try Again. It's a debut album, so, yes, they were searching for their identity, and/but you can already hear the roots of the distinctive Supertramp sound. Enjoy, my friend.
@@retroreactions.... You told me in your response to my 1970 kid -> 80s music comment a couple of days ago (comment I wrote under your Genesis, Home By The Sea Reaction vid) - hence my wink ;) I wouldn't have known otherwise: you look younger than me :/
Indocrination....(the message) this was their version of Floyd's the Wall...😳 anti-establishment boys. I always thought Hodgson would have made a great Jesus at the end of Godspell...🤣 if I would have got another synth it would have been called Roger...😏
This album and Even in the Quietest Moments are among my favorite albums. Unfortunately, they lost me with Breakfast in America, which was far too pop for my taste.
Thanks for the feedback. I can't seem to figure out what causes that. I played this video right now on my studio speakers at maybe 30% volume and it was fairly loud. I know when I watch one of my videos on my cell phone the output is much less. This video was created close to the start of my channel, so I hope I've resolved the issue. Now when I edit I make sure everything sounds fairly loud when the knobs are turned down again to about just 30%.
Horrible HORRIBLE place to pause, it totally obliterated the mood, the groove of the song. An easy way to fix that I’d to go back about 10 seconds after you pause; yes, it really matters.
Some have suggested to go back 5 seconds...either way I will be implementing that. Hard to know where it is appropriate to pause when you have never heard the song..
@@retroreactions.... - that’s true, but that is precisely why you have to do it. But there are so many transitions and surprises in music that an ill-timed pause can really destroy the flow. In this case, there was a glorious, slow build up to an awesome piano solo that was totally lost. No pauses would be best but going back 5 or 10 seconds would have helped.
It is hard to pause in School 😅 you'll have to follow the golden rules. But yes this section is one of their most iconic progression to that piano solo, please come back to it and enjoy. All little sounds matters, and the engineer Ken Scott did record this with great talent too.
Well, time to learn more about this ultra talented band! Thanks so much for watching and thanks to those who suggested this album! 🥰
Another genuine reaction. Small request: before you play the rest of the song after pausing it halfway, could you rewind the song for 5 seconds?
Might be difficult to do, since I have bad far-sightedness and people want me further away from the camera, but I will keep it in mind and maybe try it out. Thanks!

Looks like there is a lot to explore! Thanks as always...
Will add Overture to the list...thanks for the heads up on the first two albums...
You need to add the 60s, particularly mid to late. You're missing a lot if you don't. Mid 60s to mid 70s is my favorite era for music. Good reaction.
Well, my next themed week will be a 60s week, hopefully 14 songs at least, and I will do it a few times a year minimum!
@@retroreactions.... I'm in.
I'd deffinitely recommend you do a deep dive on this album (Crime of the Century). It has many outstanding tracks.
So many are saying....which are your favorites from the album?
@@retroreactions.... You've just done School which is a fantastic opener for an album and I like the way that on vinyl it seques in the next track so well. It's difficult to score this album as it's one of my all-time greats, so I like it all, but having said that, the sixth track 'Rudy' is a standout for its deeply touching story of someone feeling alone and inadequate in a big wide world.
Great thanks....I have Rudy on the list, sounds amazing thanks!
Wow, thanks again for the insight
Finest use of playground scream in music.
Ha yea!
This song is influenced by early Genesis. He sounds like Peter Gabriel on this track.
This isn't an album of individual songs. Each is connected thematically and the whole album needs to be listened end to end. Old school, if you will.
Main known songs "Ain't nobody but me" but I really prefer the Roger song "Soapbox Opera" and I advise you strongly "Lady" that got a Dreamer feel, as well as "Another man's woman" by Rick, in a Rudy mood 😎
On the next "even in the quietest moments" you heard this main title and the Fool's Overture.
Glad you enjoyed. I had heard their sound was completely different on the first couple albums, even different band members...
@@retroreactions.... On the surface, yes. But with your ear, depth and age (;)) I'm sure you'll identify those roots.
Haha, OK you know the secret that I'm ooooold! Shhh LOL...
@@retroreactions.... You told me in your response to my 1970 kid -> 80s music comment a couple of days ago (comment I wrote under your Genesis, Home By The Sea Reaction vid) - hence my wink ;) I wouldn't have known otherwise: you look younger than me :/
And good for you, bud! I looked (and felt) like a 16 yo kid until my mid forties, then rapidly aged - physically: I'm still that 16 yo kid inside.
Indocrination....(the message) this was their version of Floyd's the Wall...😳 anti-establishment boys. I always thought Hodgson would have made a great Jesus at the end of Godspell...🤣 if I would have got another synth it would have been called Roger...😏
Do I smell a new purchase ahead? hehe
@@retroreactions.... 🙄 nope...I'm saving up for a telescope now...😏
Nice! Can't wait to see what name it gets LOL....
@@retroreactions.... 🤣🤣🤣 I've already got one 😳.. Carl.. (Sagan) 🤣🤣🤣
You missed the clarinet in the beginning
hmmm, on Spotify it starts with the harmonica....is there a separate intro piece?
This album and Even in the Quietest Moments are among my favorite albums. Unfortunately, they lost me with Breakfast in America, which was far too pop for my taste.
Volume is turned down way too low...
No pauses would be best but going back 5 or 10 seconds would have helped.
trying to make 10 seconds rewind standard here...
It is hard to pause in School 😅 you'll have to follow the golden rules. But yes this section is one of their most iconic progression to that piano solo, please come back to it and enjoy. All little sounds matters, and the engineer Ken Scott did record this with great talent too.
