I appreciate that HungryBox is going out of his way to lookout for the Smash community, especially the youthful one with empathy. Going out of his way to provide Japanese subtitles to inform the opposite side of the world of the same community how unfortunate these actions have become. You'll come to realize the players as a person tend to always be sweethearts who just play with the most disliked character.
Why are the TOs and social media representatives not doing enough to stop online hatred. Like HB said "Hate the character not the Player". Even if you can't do that, the least the community can do is to leave the hatred at the game
he knows more than anybody about mass hate from the smash community. I think it's very kind of him to give light and support people when he could just step out of it and watch from the sidelines since hes "in the clear"
every time this shit happens, i feel like hbox dies a little on the inside, because he's been in this situation before. It's kind of disappointing that the smash community will never learn, and its shit like this that's why i was warry of competing in the fgc community as a whole.
Yeah, the traditional FGC is generally a bit more chill, although anything focused on competition brings out toxicity in some people, so being a bit wary is very understandable.
I don't know why people act like this is a Smash or even Fighting games thing, any sport does this to some degree. Competition makes people competitive.
I’ll be honest . The FGC, as a whole, is nothing like this . The FGC isn’t perfect but they’re typically more mature . The smash community is very child like . They act like My Hero fans
What makes this even worse is that a lot of times the ones acting like this are grown adults. It’s pathetic And I can’t believe someone really told you to kill yourself over a video game… a VIDEO GAME.
You know the meme.. "You would never survive in a COD Xbox 360 party" So these same people were kids then, and are adults now. Just found a different scene to migrate to since all of their online accounts are banned
Glad to see this made. It's been crazy to see people calling HBox out because he has a personal dislike of a character in a video game and equating that with helping the harassment of talent that he's been nothing but supportive of seems a bit off. It's like people forget that this is someone who has been closer to those player's shoes than almost anyone else. Crazy that Coinbox gets blamed for this too lol. It's crazy to hear people get mad when the fact is that online Steve is a fucking nightmare for TO's. Would be the case even if he wasn't top tier. Hope things can get better for Acola soon.
The Japanese subtitles are a nice touch. I wish there was more subtitles that translate between japanese and english or any language as a matter a fact
This is the kind of behavior that puts smash players on the fringe of the FGC. The community has always prided itself on being a unique product; yet when someone doesn’t fit their mesh of “unique,” they’re outcasted. People need to do better, truly.
Yeah... I love smash but I don't go to events or locals as when I tried to the vibe was just so bad even for bigger ones. I play tons of games in tournaments in the FGC but despite smash being my favourite to play I won't compete in it as it just doesn't feel as chill/welcoming. Just trying to get practice on a setup before my pools felt like pulling teeth whereas any other game (at the same event, even, as they ran more than just smash) I could sit down play and easily have a blast. I have other friends that also like smash and want to get better but had similar experiences to me in their own regions for various reasons. It just feels like everyone makes drama out of nothing lol As a result most of my friends that DO compete within the FGC have a pretty negative view of the smash scene, whether or not they actually tried to get into it. Stories like these really don't help.
I think smash grew up in a real unique place where the rules of play were always up for debate because unlike other fighters no matter what we at least have to make a stage list and fight over it. I feel like smash will always be a bit more toxic of a community cuz of that. I mean ultimate has the biggest stage list and yet has no more legal stages than any other one… it’s depressing. Yoshi’s story banned cuz it’s not perfectly level… y’all are dull and annoying *to me* yknow?
Not even Sakurai deserve the hate, he just made a game that is fun and a celebration of videogames as a whole. And with this whole situation... I dont feel this community deserves another Smash game, not for a while at least, it just keeps reaching new lows and digging themselves more and more. Im sorry for the pessimistic point of view, I really wish this situation gets resolved and the community grows and matures.
I'm kinda starting to understand why Sakurai wanted Brawl to be hyper casual. He probably didn't want people to sweat so much over a game he made for pure fun.
@@wanderingwobb6300 your right but i doubt that these younger kids would be harassing acola the way that the older players do. sad part is that not many people think before their actions offline
He didn't do it himself; he mostly used deepl to translate his words into Japanese. He just tweaked some of the lines cuz original translation was inaccurate
They shouldn't even be angry at Sakurai.... They should be angry at themselves for: 1. Sakurai is the one that bought them smash in the first place. 2. Sucking at Smash and not having the courage to actually do something about it. 3. Not understanding how to respect a human being. 4. Not understanding that their mentality will kill the community long before any broken character could...
I think pro players constantly saying “Acola isn’t the number 1 because he only win with steve” contributes to this a lot. Viewers just see their star saying so and obviously they’re gonna say it to Acola themselves that he’s not good because that’s how people can interpret it. If you think acola isn’t number one that’s fine, but don’t cite him playing steve as the reason.
But it is part of the reason. Steve isn't the reason Acola is a top player but he plays a big part in why he is #1, which is his consistency. Steve is just too strong that your opponent has to outplay you for the whole game for you to lose. While if he used someone like Aegis, he could just get outplayed in a couple instances and lose the set. Nothing wrong with using Steve when he is allowed and I actually think he shouldn't be banned at any major but watching Sparg0 and Acola sets against eachother its clear who is more skilled. The difference maker is the character but people need to realize that's part of being #1, choosing the right character to get you there. Cloud and Aegis just ain't it
Hazmat required around this thread, sheesh. Shark's point stands - stance on Steve notwithstanding, the disgust should rest *solely* on Steve, not the players that play Steve. Hbox made that abundantly clear, I don't see how y'all can justify ANY of this "well ackshiyually" nonsense. If you're gonna hate players for playing busted characters, get outta competitive - 'cause you have reason to hate everyone getting past first round - and shut up before you actually get Smash completely demolished with sportsmanship sour enough to make Hbox's much-earlier days look saintly in comparison. Saying "x isn't the best because they play Steve" is an invalid view. I'd even counter with "x isn't the best because they won't play Pichu" being just as invalid of a point. Let people play what they want in the places that allow it. Let the players be players without a hundred-thousand cops all over the place. I'm glad I didn't get in in the first place with this kind of low being this prevalent. >_>
Back in the turbo days, if you played Akuma you were an asshole to be shamed until you stopped picking him, because he was obviously broken. He was soft banned in Japan and hard banned in America. Top tier players SIMPLY WOULDNT PLAY WITH YOU if you picked him if he wasn't banned. Now we have an obviously broken character, with no patch support, and TO's that wont man up and ban him like they did with Akuma, and then wonder why people are pissed that players are abusing the tourney scene with what amounts to a boss character which is destroying viewership which, by the way, fucks the tourney scene over even more because Nintendo isnt giving ANY patch support, OR local support. So its nintendo, doing nintendo shit, and this is making it Bayonetta all over again. So yes, if you love the game but you keep picking a busted ass character which has been shown to lower viewership, destroy tournaments and overall make the game into an unfun mess to watch, literally taking from the game itself, well, you don't deserve to be insulted, but I aint shaking your fucking hand. And it doesn't help that he says "why is no one else picking him" is the least self-aware least knowledgeable take on fighting game history from a kid who competes in high level tournaments. I blame mostly the TO's, followed by nintendo, but acting like the player has 0 shit to do with it, would have destroyed the Street Fighter 2 scene back in the day. Without shaming players by denying practice matches, and even walking away from tourney sets, and especially without shaming the TO's, Akuma would have killed the FGC tournament scene back then really fucking quickly. This is even happened AGAIN in the HD remix. So, I don't understand why you guys are pretending this isn't a fucking thing, when it's been a thing since the FGC first started out.
@@TerryDax This is why smash will never be the best fighting game Like King Of Fighters And Street Fighter. When there's a ridiculously broken character in those games people aren't afraid to shame you into not playing it and TOs will step up and ban him. but in smash your wrong for not liking the character. Imagine If Akuma and Rugal weren't banned in tournaments. I love Rugal hes the coolest boss ever. But im not going to pick him in tournaments and expect not to get booed. Man smashers are just soft. I can't blame Sakurai for this either. Hes not the one finding new tech for this stupid character.
After the uh...*Thing* I've been in a video about, I talked to Acola off stage a little bit after the tournament (through his translator). He was such a nice a person and nothing like people paint him as purely because of his character, the kid may play someone controversial but you can't deny he's a prodigy and he's a kind person on top of that! Don't harass people, especially if they're teens that don't even know how to go about defending themselves against these grown ass adults throwing hate around.
In what way? The player exclusively plays a character that carrys them, and they know exactly what they're doing. They're to blame for people disliking them just as much.
It's not only twitch chat. He's mentioned multiple times that it's upsetting when he sees people shitting on him when he's casually scrolling through Twitter. Obviously not wanting to see Steve hate is asking for too much, but why is it so hard for people to leave the discussion to the character alone?
Telling people to separate the player from the character will do nothing. Everybody that’s harassing players for playing steve knows exactly what they are doing, literally just read the comments and replies for proof. The mentality they have is “bully them till they drop the character or leave the community”, and for the most part its grown adults. Actually the most pitiful people in existence, and these types of players for some reason rarely seem to get banned.
If certain characters and playstyles cause you to no longer enjoy a game, just stops playing the game and do somthing you actually enjoy. People seem to think that tournaments will be as fun as playing with your buddies but thats just not the case. The stakes being so high(probably flew out there, scheduled off multiple days of work and thus losing money, and of course wanting the cash prize and the GLORY) is obviously going to cause people to play to win, by any means necessary. These adults want to change the community to fit their interests by any means possible instead of just growing up and moving on. Its sad
I think this is also part of a much bigger issue. So many people have been desensitized to threats online and I dont think many people realize how serious these threats are to someone who has a platform. Top Players are someone you can recognize in public, so a death threat is pretty scary because there's a real possibility of them being attacked.
I think there are two major steps that should take place. The problem is that there is no combination of words, that will convince bad people to not be bad on mass. Anybody who has a large enough following will 100% have people harassing them. Step one is videos like this one. Letting people know it's not cool. That will minimize good people joining in. It will have the opposite effect on bad people though. Step two and the most important one, is a good group of mods and strong modding/filter tools that allow him to filter out the bad people easier. Another step, that isn't really viable because Acola is a child, is growing tougher skin if you plan to be famous. This is something that takes time and is most likely very difficult for a child. If you break down publicly because of harassment, the bad people will feel great about the suffering they caused and ramp it up to get even more reactions, that is why this is an important step. It's just not really viable for a child though.
hbox out of everyone has been harassed all his career for playing jigs and is one most or if not most successful smasher in terms of content ect, respect
You know what really sucks? So many people were so happy to see someone like Steve join smash bros. Hell, Steve even helped sell more units of the game by being included. The fact Sakurai did so well to program so much of what Minecraft is, for this character is amazing. So what happens? Players refuse to learn how to adapt and all you see online is rage. You took something that is amazing and super cool to see..and make us all look like ungrateful pests. The more people play a broken character the faster players will learn how to beat them... how to make strategies to take them down. My heart goes our to the thousands of people who felt joy when a game they love got representation... only for them to get dumped into the flames.
@@milesv5579Plenty of players adapted. Just look at how far onin fell on the rankings he's still good but people just learned to play steve and learned what characters beat him.
What makes it sad is that if they rose to the top that quickly with pretty much any other character (besides the almost universally controversial characters like Sonic, min min, kazuya, and rob), they would be fan favorites and celebrated. See Jmook in melee
Right now, Hungrybox, with his newfound platform and following, is telling the Smash community not to do to a kid what they did to him. They should think about that.
I see things like this and I think, "This is why Nintendo, a company that is supposed to be family friendly, is better off keeping its distance and not getting involved with the Smash community." I am sorry to hear that Acola has to tolerate that for playing a video game, that is supposed to be fun, by the rules.
I can sympathize with Akola a little on this. I’ve been going to locals a lot recently, and I play Kazuya and Steve, which are two of the most hated characters in the entire game. When Steve’s not banned, I counter pick people with Steve. When he’s banned, I go all Kazuya. I’ve had people yell at me, scream at me that I’m not good, and I genuinely think someone even caught themselves almost telling me to kms just because I hit them with a single 2-hit EWGF kill confirm. I’ve learned to play into the hate, but I can’t imagine how hard it must be for an actual kid to go through something multiple times the intensity. In their immaturity, the teenagers of the Smash community will always express intense toxicity towards someone just because they hate playing against the character they play, and it’s starting to get widespread and genuinely concerning.
this is why i want to change the next smash game. i want a new smash game to be quite literally "perfect" in a fighting game like smash. don't let these ghouls ruin the experience and dictate what character you want to play in smash. kazuya is not even top 5 and yet people still whine about him and ewgf. it's just a poorly designed 'juggle' move. this community is gonna learn one day to stop harassing players.
@@smashbrosgoatUnfortunately, with a community mostly built up of teenagers, they won’t learn until years down the line when the damage has long since been done
I think the "That player was carried by this character" sentiment is the more damaging sentiment since it blurs the line between the character being broken and the player having skills. I can understand why some characters are broken, but at the same time, you think the person who uses said broken character did not work hard to make his broken character's playstyle viable?
Yikes, didn't think the Japanese scene would jump in like this. Although I like Smash Bros, I fear for the point where the community formed around it will act as Gatekeepers and Deterrents. Not to say the Smash Competitive scene is the only fan base that exists but they tend to come to mind the most. As they say, "one rotten apple spoils the whole barrel."
Smash hype was dwindling after the last batch of OP dlc characters but the cherry on top was the non-stop scandals and allegations. The community is doing this game no favors with no one caring about smash anymore you only have try-hards and toxic hyperfixators
As somebody that would love nothing more than for steve to be removed from smash; behavior like that is absolutely appalling. Hearing about this makes me wish I could meet acola/onin just so i can show them it's possible to respect them as people even when you despise the character they play
The consequence will be the person will probably stop playing the game and will hate the community going forward. It's not a good outcome for the player and that really bad luck for the community overall.
@@-.Outlaw.- you're assuming these people play smash in the first place. Wouldn't surprise me if these are just trolls that go around Stirling thebpot in various online communities
And the community still wonders why Nintendo doesn't respect them. This is far from the first time something like this has happened and no one will hold these people accountable. This isn't even a community. It's an embarrassing shit show.
Shit like this is exactly why I myself stopped playing ANY Smash Bros title. Yes, I’m counting fan games like Crusade. If I have to see one more player suffer just for wanting to play as their favorite character in a fictitious video game, I will personally sell every Smash title I own (and that’s ALL OF THEM) for one million dollars on eBay. And the sad part of that is someone out there will PROBABLY buy it from me considering how garbage this community has gotten…
It really is the worst community, its such a shame because its a great game with good people there too, just so much anger, pettiness, toxicity. A lot of these people are socially inept shut-ins and that plays a huge role in why they act so childish. You meet them in real life and its like everytime they live up to all the stereotypes its crazy. They are the sole reason Nintendo is so disconnected from them and supporting esports in general. Who would want to interact and support a community like this?
Smashers need to understand that there are indeed reasons Nintendo has not supported the community. The ones who make trouble do not represent the entire community, but they do affect how the community is perceived. There’s just too much drama that pervades the Smash community for Nintendo to see it as worth investing in
When first I saw hatred of a character turn into hatred of the player, it was some time after Pound 2019 when I heard news about the infamous crab incident online. Fast forward to a couple years later and I see stuff like this happening in the Smash Ultimate community. I asked myself, “Why does this keep happening? I thought we have progressed past this point...” and the reason why is because Super Smash Bros is a game franchise that will attract younger audiences. While we obviously can’t be expected to raise these young players ourselves, what we can do is educate and explain to them the basic respect you should show when competing and spectating. It won’t be perfect and there will be toxicity from trolling and whatnot, but we can definitely help minimize it to the point where it won’t be affecting current top players. Especially any new players who may be driven out of the community because of this. One thing we can all definitely agree on is the fact that NOBODY wants to see players being threatened or harmed just because of the character they play. What happened to Hungrybox at Pound 2019 should never have to happen to a player ever again in competitive smash.
I think the whole hate on steve this , ban steve on that , is nurturing hate and toxicity in the community and everywhere else and in turn will affect the players , whether you like it or not it will , I think it should stop , stop with the dramatisation with steve the whole banning him at tournaments , because at the end of the day steve isn't a bayonetta or meta knight , it only has a very atypical play style and players need to learn how to cope with it , or just play steve instead , that's how it is steve is hype af anyways
Acola has always been one of the nicest kid known to be in competitive Smash, and yall bullied him over a funni block man ruining your little party game. Its embarrassing how many grown ups decides bullying a kid is better than stop and realizing maybe this is getting too much if they feel the need to do so.
to call it little party game to people who dedicate their lives to play it competitively and even earn money lets me know you have little respect for smash as a whole anyway so why even be here
@@xailoc sakurai/nintendo didnt intend to make a competitive game to be played in tournaments. i agree the harassment is not welcomed but im saying if hes so bothered he needs a break or parents need to help not the internet
Reminder: The boy who played Anakin Skywalker in the first prequel movie has been diagnosed with schizophrenia because a bunch of man children didn't like his performance and that poison leeched into his personal life and at school. He is a paranoid, husk of a human being and the cause here is similar. Just imagine if that was you or a little sibling or your kid. Some of these people think they are hard and tough but if they think that way odds are they have never had to deal with emotional abuse on all sides like these people have.
He's just playing the game well by choosing Steve - if he's not banned, then he's making the right choice by choosing him. Imagine if people got pissed off and called you an awful person because you counter picked stages, because that's "not fair". That's how dumb you guys sound when you harrass them.
“An overpowered character in a fighting game can only go as far as the person playing them is what I like to think”, because without people like Salem, jake, Onin, and Acola who pioneered Steve into actual competitive smash, we would never be having the discussion about steve in the first place. Because for the first 1 and a half years no one took the character seriously because the character was from a game everyone thought was more childish than the game they already play, how does that make any sense? This is horrible behavior for a community and I never really comment on videos ethier. The smash community is 3 major Mishaps away from collapsing into anarchy.
Still don’t understand how you can hate Steve when you were a puff player in melee. Like what? If people banned puff from tourneys you would find it extremely unfair and targeted towards you. How is it any different for Steve?
I admit I'll stop watching a tournament match with steve if he's sweeping everyone, especially if it's grand finals and a steve is clearly stomping the other player. I'll look at the end of the video to confirm it and move on to other videos. I don't care for steve. I also understand that it's a fairly broken character and can fully separate steve from the player using him. I think most gamers at some point have used a strategy, or character, or class that gives the best results with the least amount of effort. I've never played smash ultimate but I can still tell that it takes a large amount of effort to learn steve and learn the game to get to the point where you can win tournaments. Attacking a player because they're using the best character is both pointless and idiotic.
What has to go through somebody’s head in order to personally hate someone because of a video game? I don’t know how character choice at all translates to the person themselves besides playstyle. Big props to the people who call out the harrassment
Smash can't ever catch a break and yet the community keeps shooting themselves in the foot over and over. I love Smash as much as the next person but it's becoming more difficult to even root for the community, which is honestly tragic. Either reform needs to happen or there won't be a soul left in the community in the next few years.
The more stuff like this goes on, the more Nintendo keep seeing this as a justification to put a stop to it all. As much as I want the Smash scene to thrive, stuff like this would turn me off too, as a company. Doesn't mean Nintendo are right for the things they did to their fanbases. Just stuff like this is why Nintendo AND the internet despises the mention of competitive smash. Can't move forward if the community is always two steps back.
I’m so happy ever since I quit. I encourage you all to quit too because the Smash community is a lost cause. Everything Nintendo or other parties did to hurt the community is 100% deserved due to all of the terrible individuals that exist within.
We can be really disgusting. Rage and frustration come from losing the tourneys or money or the so craved title. But we really should practise more patience. Throwing controllers at and even physically hurting a player after losing match aren't unknown in this community that we just laugh away. But we showed we can stoop to a lower low and bully a kid until he feels disgusted with himself. WE REALLY SHOULD STOP THE TOXICITY, SPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO THE PLAYERS. 😔❤️ Edit: thanks Hbox for speaking on this, hope it can reach the people. Discussions like this are so necessary. Nobody should feel any bad kinda way because they are playing a certain character in the game.
Here is my take: The majority of the community has wanted character balance changes if the game is to be continued to be treated/available as a tournament game. S@kurai and co. haven't complied, other than reinforcing that this is not designed as a tournament game, but more about general funfactor, but that excuse just doesn't cover for what is perceived as their inaction as listening to the community, while taking advantage of the advertising and press of tournaments to showcase their product. So I see it as frustration from many members of the community, since they have no apparent recourse or likely possibility to get necessary change, that is elevating into doing the only thing they think they can, by lashing out at whomever continues to use such characters. It's not right, but I get why they do it - to drive those characters off the leaderboard unless they are adjusted in relation to other tiers. At the same time, to play devil's advocate for a moment, Steve players know the controversy - so do GnW players - so do Sonics, etc etc. But they aren't changing characters or bowing out [with the exception of Onin but he did return with the same decision], and that's because those players are choosing to win over the negativity surrounding them. That is a conscious choice they are making, and no, not every single Steve is a lifetime Minecraft superfan...it's about the W. Anyhow, a better way for the community to force their will, rather than targeting players, is by nullifying the character(s) in question as much as possible. That's why I favor bans. That's why I don't begrudge spectators or players jeering characters or being vocal about displeasure at tourneys. I think there is more value in say, walking out on a Grand Finals as a crowd, or top players refusing to participate/play in certain tournaments, or grouping together and holding alternate tournaments counter to "official" majors that don't coincide with what the community wants. Because in the end, it's all about the money and sponsorships. Reduce/cut that off, and then the development team/backers won't have a choice but to start to listen, because ultimately, making money either by sales or by advertising influences their thinking.
Thanks for the video, from Japan While I think the Japanese subtitles are a nice gesture, if you really want to express something to the Japanese community you should pay someone to actually translate instead of using AI translation ( not a particularly good one either) Many times it had you saying the opposite of what you actually were trying to express (often in pretty offensive ways) and others it was unintelligible. Kind of just makes it feel like the subtitles are there to make you look good to non-Japanese speakers, not for Japanese speakers to understand you
Anyone who disrespects sakurai and gets genuinely angry at him, needs to be put in a mental institution, because he is like the most cool guy I can think of. He’s kind, smart, and genuinely just a good guy, so don’t be shitting on sakurai. But I would agree that the developer just went a bit far for Steve 💀
its strange how smash has been around for many years, having literal surges of misconduct and harassment, and it never gets better. maybe we need to step up, as players and the community, and start calling people out on their toxicity. because toxicity is being normalized in video games, and whoever said that's ok is completely wrong.
There’s no reason to hate the person for playing a character. Most people might hate, but at the end of the day everybody’s a human being, and nobody deserves to be talked about horribly like that by anybody. i’m sure everybody deals with other personal things even before they pick up a controller and they go to tournaments etc. so on and so forth we don’t know the other stuff they go through throughout the day before picking up a controller and playing one of their favorite games they enjoy.
steve was put in the game and is a tool to get wins like every other character, and he just so happens to be the best one in the game. dosent mean you should hate someone for picking the best tool.
Is steve really on the level of smash 4 bayo or brawl meta knight? They weren't banned but they were way more oppressive than Steve (Though I do think Steve is broken just not that broken)
I always felt that. I hate wolf with every fiber, and there is some hate for steve as well when he can do some bonkers shit. But I never tried to take it out on the players, hell, i would try my best to have a good time with any player, even play more against those characters cuz I wanted to learn to beat them so badly. In my community, its never been a problem. I even hear from the younger side how much they hate certain characters and how they'll even keep that anger for the players sometimes. Hell, sometimes i get it because i play Roy. But i always try to diffuse by playing it down, or spell out my characters weaknesses and just go from there. Its a game first. We should all be having fun, even if we're trying really hard to win.
Can we talk about how no-life Smash players are? I mean, harassing kids and being one of the communities most responsible for gamer stereotypes. It's not the gamer shower meme, it's the smash player shower meme. Get a job, touch some grass, hit the gym, stop scrolling past midnight, etc. because this is disgusting.
How do people do this? I cannot fathom harassing someone OVER A VIDEO GAME. I love smash, I care about this game so much. I hate that Steve is in the game. I would NEVER harass someone for playing him. I can get frustrated, I can be discontent, attacking the player is just disgusting
The thing I’ve noticed on why that happens is it’s common to tie a character to a player as a avatar. But that’s for the hype which a lot of players in smash have a hard time to understanding that once the stocks are done, and the game is done we’re all Human beings. Especially with a game with a younger audience you could actually lead to something tragic do the less developed brain. If you hate Steve hate Steve.
Yeah, don't send hate to the player, better send hate to the developer, cause that's more moraly correct lol. Jokes aside, all of this makes me so sad, at least Hbox is doing all he can do to lookout after the smash community.
As a life long born and raised god gifted hater, its not that hard to separate a character from the player. You have to separate them. It is so unbelievably easy to be considerate and not attack people and players personally. Golden rule guys, talk shit all you want, but make sure the shit talk is that, shit talk. We're all here to do the same thing guys, we all know steve is broken, minmin is cringe, sonic stalling for 7 minutes is boring af, rob is stupid, g&w upB is cheesy af... None of that should ever diminish the respect you have for players. We're all practicing combo routs in the dark at 4am with the same end goal in mind. No one is better a better human here than anyone else, get good, be respectful, and please enjoy game.
Mark my words, this will not stop. It’s nice to do a video to try and prevent it, but it doesn’t matter, it won’t make a difference. If you’ve decided that going after the player is ok, you’ve already discarded logic. So why do we think logic will work? The smash community is THE worst gaming community I have ever had the displeasure to witness. If you have faith in this community, you simply don’t know enough about it.
Hungrybox I ask of you to make another video the same one.. but the only difference is the title. I think it would grab more of the japanese audience or at least put some words in the thumbnail for them.
Now Miya has confirmed pulling out on all future Steve banned tournaments/majors. No Steve, No G&W. Big win for the viewers, but not for the competitive scene/players.
To be honest what I feel sad the most was you actually had a moment with acola in Japan. Even participate for UA-cam show and thought had good moment together but behind always in front to argue about Steve ban and I was very shocked you stood up for it. I know you are not mean to point player but people are very easy to misunderstood. I hope you can support this community to not lose talent player like acola.
the only problem i have with the dlc characters is that you have to pay for them and i feel like it shouldn't matter if you play a certain character as long as you play by the rules it has no reflection on the kind of person you are
I think this kind of antisocial behavior comes from people who genuinely have no life outside of smash. Someone playing a character they don’t like is the worst thing they can think of a person doing with their very limited imagination. This is their version of a war crime. Deeply unhealthy mindset that for whatever reason the smash scene seems to attract.
I said this in the last video made on this. No one ever wants to change. Unless the game truly dies, or Steve gets a universal worldwide perma-ban, these kids will continue to suffer for their character choices. There's no grey area on this, and it sucks. Kinda glad I found Magic the Gathering and distanced myself from smash.
Smash is literally the most childish community of all time. Imagine this kind of behavior toward a literal teen, mainly coming from a bunch of man children.
I mean the man had dead crabs thrown at him just for doing his job, it's not like that kind of empathy comes out of nowhere in these scenes
Why are the TOs and social media representatives not doing enough to stop online hatred. Like HB said "Hate the character not the Player". Even if you can't do that, the least the community can do is to leave the hatred at the game

It just feels like everyone makes drama out of nothing lol
As a result most of my friends that DO compete within the FGC have a pretty negative view of the smash scene, whether or not they actually tried to get into it. Stories like these really don't help.
sorta doubt it's unique
I think smash grew up in a real unique place where the rules of play were always up for debate because unlike other fighters no matter what we at least have to make a stage list and fight over it. I feel like smash will always be a bit more toxic of a community cuz of that.
I mean ultimate has the biggest stage list and yet has no more legal stages than any other one… it’s depressing. Yoshi’s story banned cuz it’s not perfectly level… y’all are dull and annoying *to me* yknow?

I'm kinda starting to understand why Sakurai wanted Brawl to be hyper casual. He probably didn't want people to sweat so much over a game he made for pure fun.
Disgusting that that part of the community never learns and acts like children
The problem is that a lot of the smash community is children which is in stark contrast to the rest of the FGC.

They shouldn't even be angry at Sakurai.... They should be angry at themselves for:
1. Sakurai is the one that bought them smash in the first place.
2. Sucking at Smash and not having the courage to actually do something about it.
3. Not understanding how to respect a human being.
4. Not understanding that their mentality will kill the community long before any broken character could...
5. Sakurai doesn't much care about the competitive scene as long as it doesn't affect casual players.
Cloud and Aegis just ain't it
Playing steve IS a big part of the reason. What do you mean? lmao
My expectations for the smash community was non existant after the numerous scandals and previous cases of harassment towards MINORS but fucking hell!

It just never stops man
Telling people to separate the player from the character will do nothing.
Its sad
I love the Japanese subtitles that are there
Keep it going Hbox
Try and support the scene man
🤡

And this is why Nintendo has no problem attempting to ban Smash Bros. in tournaments.

Whats sad is that it was only a matter of time before Acola would get the same treatment as Onin. Hate the character not the player

I think the whole hate on steve this , ban steve on that , is nurturing hate and toxicity in the community and everywhere else and in turn will affect the players , whether you like it or not it will , I think it should stop , stop with the dramatisation with steve the whole banning him at tournaments , because at the end of the day steve isn't a bayonetta or meta knight , it only has a very atypical play style and players need to learn how to cope with it , or just play steve instead , that's how it is

Edit: thanks Hbox for speaking on this, hope it can reach the people.
Thanks for the video, from Japan
While I think the Japanese subtitles are a nice gesture, if you really want to express something to the Japanese community you should pay someone to actually translate instead of using AI translation ( not a particularly good one either)
Many times it had you saying the opposite of what you actually were trying to express (often in pretty offensive ways) and others it was unintelligible.
Kind of just makes it feel like the subtitles are there to make you look good to non-Japanese speakers, not for Japanese speakers to understand you
He's probably just not educated on how bad machine translations are. There's no need to assume what he's doing is in bad faith.
Agreed. As a Japanese guy myself, I can confirm that the subtitles are misleading at times.
@@knic__8799 People really find any reason to hate I stg
Anyone who disrespects sakurai and gets genuinely angry at him, needs to be put in a mental institution, because he is like the most cool guy I can think of. He’s kind, smart, and genuinely just a good guy, so don’t be shitting on sakurai. But I would agree that the developer just went a bit far for Steve 💀
seriously why did this have to be even said
Jigglypuff is dummy THICC.
Change my mind
Jigglypuff is quite literally all ass
FOR REAL THO😩😩😩😩
You ain't wrong, she's a literal balloon lol
its strange how smash has been around for many years, having literal surges of misconduct and harassment, and it never gets better. maybe we need to step up, as players and the community, and start calling people out on their toxicity. because toxicity is being normalized in video games, and whoever said that's ok is completely wrong.

I hate bans just play the fucking game and adapt. You think they updated fighting characters back in the day?
fax
You're telling the internet to consider other human beings. I support your endeavor
Yeah exactly. People act like this and wonder why Nintendo avoids any interaction with the competitive smash scene.
The community has never learned from Smash 4
How do people do this? I cannot fathom harassing someone OVER A VIDEO GAME. I love smash, I care about this game so much. I hate that Steve is in the game. I would NEVER harass someone for playing him. I can get frustrated, I can be discontent, attacking the player is just disgusting
calling this a "community" has to be a bad joke
Cry
It is a community. That's why when someone does something that is actively harming it, they try to push them out....
I should get these kids some sponsors.
アジア人差別をやめろ
To be honest what I feel sad the most was you actually had a moment with acola in Japan. Even participate for UA-cam show and thought had good moment together but behind always in front to argue about Steve ban and I was very shocked you stood up for it. I know you are not mean to point player but people are very easy to misunderstood. I hope you can support this community to not lose talent player like acola.
Seeing this kind of thing happen. I wonder why nintendo does not support the compettitive scene.
Y’all make it sound like the haters aren’t also teenagers and minors
the only problem i have with the dlc characters is that you have to pay for them and i feel like it shouldn't matter if you play a certain character as long as you play by the rules it has no reflection on the kind of person you are
Is steve at Meta Knight or Sm4sh Bayonetta levels?
Sonix, Riddles, Onin, Acola... These dudes don't deserve any of the shit they get man. Same for Hbox back then.
I seriously don’t understand why HBox had to make a video about something that should be common sense at this point. Disappointing..
They are children........
