Common Snapping Turtle, The Best Pet Turtle?

  • The common snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina) is my favorite turtle. It might be my favorite animal. Sure, they aren't as cool looking as alligator snapping turtles or the mata mata, but their awesome appearance along with their intelligence and personality just make them so incredibly special. But is the common snapping turtle a good pet? Is this monster turtle the best pet reptile for you?

    A friend of mine had a snapper named Bubba. She rescued him from some folks selling him for meat. He had a huge gash on his neck from the wire hanger they had wrapped around it to carry him. She nursed him back to health and he became the most gentle turtle. You could hand feed him worms and he would take them oh so gently. He was eventually released into a turtle sanctuary in his native habitat. Thank you so much for this very sweet and informative video!

    Now I know you said that the bite force isn’t THAT strong but I’ve had a lot of experience handling and feeding snapping turtles and I’ve seen a snapping turtle easily decapitate a fish. It’s not really just the bite force, more like how sharp that beak is and that they won’t let go.

    An older friend of mine was washing his hands off the edge of a dock after fileting some fish.
    He was bitten by a common snapping turtle, which took off most of his pinky and did severe damage to his ring finger.
    I realize this evidence is anecdotal and second hand, but I just wanted to share that they can, in fact, sever a digit.
    But still, seems like a solid pet.

  • @sheepdogsherlock1311

    I love my Common Snapper, when tamed they'll never bite, and they act more like a puppy than any other turtle and they are more interactive than an alligator snapper. They are also more hybrid than most aquatic turtles so they do fine on land walks. I still wouldn't recommend them as a pet for how easy it is to not properly care for them, but I love that I'll have a life long pet. I hatched my own, I'd not reccomend taming a wild turtle.
    Just to clarify a couple points in the video. Snappers do not need to bask like other aquatic turtles, so UVB isn't as vital as their diet satisfies that need. Mine loves to bask under a heat source (no light). They may be lazy swimmers but they are good swimmers in my opinion. Mine will inflate herself to float or sink as needed. Common Snappers aren't exactly as quick as fish are so it's a bit unnatural to feed a whole fish diet which I avoid with so many bones. But as a protein source mine loves cuts of fish, crawdad tails, and scallops.

    "He's like a hamburger." LOL forever. I just love you, Clint. I wish there were so many more people like you. You make me laugh and learn and your RESPECT for these animals as autonomous beings makes me so very happy. I have an adult Carolina mantis that I am ACHING at the prospect of losing in a month or three here, and I have always tried to respect her decisions. Only held her once to save her from an ant invasion.
    I can boop her (gentle touch, back leg or "mantisbutt") and she kind of pearlclutches like WELL I NEVER, but she does NOT run or threat-display (you know that I AM CORNHOLIO thing mantises do, lol?) So I don't press the issue or do it very often. I offer her my hand gently and calmly and she checks me out busily with those antennae but has no desire to stand on my hand. BUT--she doesn't run away, as she's learned I won't hurt her, and I'm so honored by that!
    A previous mantis would stand on the "door" on purpose so I'd open it and hold her--she'd eagerly trot into my hand! They all have their own little personalities and moods and reasons and boundaries, and I love and respect that YOU love and respect that, is the point of this ramble. They don't owe us anything . We owe THEM the best care and respect and love we can offer, and IMO that HAS to include letting them say NO unless there's a serious pressing danger.

      Big Z's Animal Adventures just because you haven’t lost a finger doesn’t mean they can’t. Alligator turtles can for sure, and I have personally seen a common bite a fairly large fish in half. With the bite force and the shearing beak it would be more than capable of removing a finger that ended up in its mouth. Every bite wouldn’t do it, but some probably could.

    • @bigzsanimaladventures4781
      @bigzsanimaladventures4781 3 роки тому +2

      @@Tinyvalkyrie410 no that's just incorrect. Their beak is sharp enough to cause lacerations an some pain but they don't have enough jaw strength to break bone. A fish sure their bones are thin an brittle. An alligator snapping turtle easily could but a common snapping turtle is just not possible. Maybe a large enough male could maybe break a finger although highly unlikley. Ive worked with reptiles my whole life and im a senior in college in zoology an herpetology I know far more about reptiles then you or the guy who's comment I replied to. Do some research before believing every old story you hear

    • @Tinyvalkyrie410
      @Tinyvalkyrie410 3 роки тому +7

      Big Z's Animal Adventures you are making assumptions about the knowledge of the people you are talking to without justification. I am a biophysicist and have significant experience with reptiles from working at zoos, an aquarium and two rescues. Humans have been shown to bite off fingers on many occasions, and they have to crush and rip... a turtle cuts, which requires much less force. Even if we assume they cannot break bone, they certainly could slice through a joint. As I said, not every bite would, but a lucky one absolutely could.
      Edit: for anyone still curious, it has been well established that both common and alligator snapping turtles eat other turtles, including shells, in the wild. If a turtle can regularly crack open a turtle as a snack, I definitely wouldn’t trust them with my fingers.

      @@herlocksholmeshasautism I agree. My grandma has another red-footed tortoise (his girlfriend) and I left him at my grandmother's for a while. When I came back Kohki (his name) introduced me to his girlfriend. He would not come when I called him, he started "clicking", as if calling me to come and meet his mate. When I approached him, he started rubbing his face against her shell. Super cute PDA. And then he approached me and gave me a peck (touched my fingers with his beak as he usually does). Of all the turtles I've caught in my life the common snapper, definitely, has the most interesting personality ... and I've caught a butt load of all the turtles in my area... from just hatched to as big as the seat in your truck. The older they are, the most blessed I feel I am to meet them and save them...

    They're cool to look at and their adaptations are amazing to study. That being said, everyone has an opinion. That's why they're are different herps for different people. I have two sliders. Love them. They're very sociable and goofy. Keeping a snapper would be the last on my list. I know people who love large snakes. I do not. They're a pain in the ass to me. I love my corn snakes because they have a calm demeanor, beautiful morphs, and their size is so easily manageable. Different herps for different people. Very nice video.

      I worked at our local zoo and some ducks and geese laid eggs and hatched out in one of the ponds. After awhile we noticed that their were fewer and fewer babies in the pond. At first it was thought that the hawks and other raptors were catching them until a group of children and their parents watched a common snapper snacking on them. It was so elusive that they had to drain the pond to catch him. It was awesome.

    The waterfowl are prevalent on the lake I kayak and sometimes they are "victims" of motorboats. Once in a while, I will find a couple of Snapping turtles feeding on the dead. They are always a welcome sight to me.

    So I've shared this video a bunch of times because I live in their native range, and they are probably second only to our eastern box turtles to be most commonly in the road, in a dangerous place, and needing to be relocated. I occasionally see debates on social media about how best to handle them, (often people swear by picking up even big turtles by their tails 😢) so I share this with a "skip to" time for handling.
    I actually just moved a snapper off the road the other day - my first turtle this spring. He was little bit bigger than nipper was in this video, and the most well mannered wild snapper I've ever met. I wanted to take him home.
    But thanks for being you and thanks for sharing awesome, informative content!!
