It wasn't for me, but the first I played was the top 3D-like view. To each their own, I say. Also, the fanbase and demographic is always changing.... especially when it comes to Zelda. Most ppl don't/didn't care for the RPG elements. Lanterns and oil. The side scrolling. EXP etc... The overview map with no proportioning. The 3 lives and start over with nothing. Bosses that force you to battle in a really akward manner. Let's be honest....those boomerangs are there to make the game last longer in an unfair way. The grind isn't fun either. I didn't care for it, but it was still a solid game overall for the NES. It sold well, but the overhead 3D-like view... won. Zelda 2 still sold like crazy then...and the value holds today. I guess it was just too different from the original game...and its predecessors...so there's really not many people left to defend Zelda 2 that were fans. You have to realize that a Zelda fan from the 80's.... is different from a Zelda fan from the 90's...2000's...all the way to today..... since they still make them. It's getting to be more action based with open world exploration now. Maybe those type of fans will start to dominate the scene. Idk.

I actually like Zelda 2. Just because it's difficult doesn't mean it's a bad game. Managing how to spend your magic effectively makes it a lot of fun.

It’s not the greatest, but you don’t need to dump on it even though it is an incredibly difficult game without rewind and save states on the switch
