Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 лют 2025
- The best of Japan vs the best of USA high school boys volleyball. This is by far the best high school match I ever played in, a five set battle between arguably the best high school volleyball team in America, Punahou HS and one of the top high school volleyball teams in Japan.

So much entertainment in one video. Got to see high level volleyball and hear the punahou 2007 gossip
Bro... Japan's libero doesn't wear a different shirt but DIFFERENT SHORTS!!!
THIS IS NEXT LEVEL VOLLEYBALL!!! 🏐🔥
When you're blocking and you're trying to focus on the ball while glancing at spikers' movement and you only see the top of people, wearing the same shirt as a libero actually gives you some slight advantage.
I think that's kind of unfair for the opposite team.
is that legal?
Don't think it's legal
Maybe it depends on the league, and perhaps Japan has slightly different rules. I can see this as something that is illegal but not really enforced, especially as this is an international game and no ref wants to say, "You can't play because you're wearing the wrong shirt". I doubt USA really cared either.
Crazy how fast you guys adapted to Japan's explosiveness. You guys scored so much points at the end of the first set just from defensive plays! Both teams played extremely well!
@@themckibbinbrothers Still very impressive you guys got consecutive stops on them though, especially during the first set. Props to you guys!
@@themckibbinbrothers seemed like height was also a big factor (japan ran out of juice/strength; being they are shorter.. takes too much energy to get the same results/jump/spike). Such a great video nonetheless. Crazy to see how good these highschool teams were esp. Back in 2006!
@@yajstylez stupendous really, and they've gotten even more refined now
both the US and Japan
Their level of defensive discipline is something I can only DREAM of ever achieving.
@@themckibbinbrothers I have a question about defense. I notice that the teams triple block, but doesn’t that leave a big gap in the corners. Couldn’t the hitter just tip deep into the corner for a point? Or is there something I’m missing?
@@jacobneffeasier said than done I thought you were the one
hitters that tip or roll into deep corners usually have a telegraph that they aren't about to swing hard , especially at this level. The defending team will be able to read it and pick it up most of the time. There are times when it can be a useful attack though.@@jacobneff
What an impressive game, literally high schoolers. USA’s blocking, serve receive, and defensive tenacity is unreal!
The ball control and combinations from both sides is unbelievable...especialy for HS players! Thanks for sharing this and all the videos! For volleyball and specifically the AVP to grow we need personalities and stories to go along with the talent and you and your brother are at the top of the list in both! Well done!
What age do you think they were at the time?
one of the most entertaining matches of hs I've ever seen. I come back to watch this every couple months and it never ceases to inspire me. Even the handshakes at the end are fun to watch
Pretty sure both these highschool teams could beat my current college club team
This match is insane!!! The passing and arm swing of japan’s #1 tho! This was cool to watch
Im just genuinly surprised by how beautiful and refined the Japanese volleyball form is.
And how aware and intelligent for the blocks and the sets r amazing
Yeeeeees, yeeees, yees, finally, 4 days of waiting have finally paid off!
Trying to imagine what was going through 16 year old Riley's head @5:11 when the outside gets set with absolutely no block 'Oh shiiiiiiii-'
I wish I could pull off attacks consistently at that speed, thanks a lot for posting this it really helps give me a goal to get to
#4 on the Japanese side is hella impressive. Smart hitter at such a small stature. This is some high level high school volleyball right here.
the speed of the HS Japanese team's offense, especially in transition, WHEW! Them boys were coming to get y'all. Way to fight back!
this 30 min took almost an hour to watch, cuz i had to keep rewatching japans plays. Great to see the full game! Were you guys influenced by their combination attacks mid-game? Like "Yo we can do tandem's too!" kinda thing
17:33 is the coolest attack ever!!
9:49
;)
I've been reading the comment section and all I can say is that you now have a new subscriber (me), very few people on this platform takes some of their time to reply to the comments and to see you doing it is like... WOW, you are an amazing volleyball player, right now I'm coaching a team of teenagers and watching your vids helps me a lot. Keep the good work, greetings from Tijuana, Mexico.
That is some insanely good volleyball. Thanks for uploading!
Hey man, this was a really interesting video to watch, I am the captain of my year 9 high school volleyball team and I will definitely have to show our team this video. Seeing these high-level athletes compete using their combined skill and knowledge of the game is really inspiring!
Japan had crazy offense and defense schemes but what’s even more insane was how fast you guys adapted to them and even started using combo plays later on.
this match was just so good. Volleyball was designed for exactly this much back and forth
The Japanese setter is amazing. Fast sets on HS level. Damn.
He should have used his middle more, he kept on running the full combination so at the end it became predicable, but his control is awesome... They needed a faster middle short attack, hitter should be in the air already when the setter gets the ball, I think they would have been unstoppable...
Damnnnn!!!! Straight 🔥🔥🔥🔥 from both teams. Crazy how it was only highschoolers. Need more international games like this.
It's amazing to see this level of volleyball in just highschool these guys are running a lot of complex stuff that you would see at national level my school doesn't even have a damn net for us to play
That ambidextrous attack at 12:48 was pretty cool.
The girls having a completely typical high school girl conversation during the whole match is hilarious. Also whoever is on the camera did a great job.
It's crazy Taylor Crabb didn't make varsity given how good he is, what a stacked team.
Was there really a touch at 26:37? By who the blocker or defender? The video quality is surprisingly good for 2007, but I can't see a touch and your whole team thinks it's out.
Usually when an opponent is better than you thought you tend to unravel pretty quickly and not play well, the fact you guys adjusted mid-game is really impressive.
Ah, another masterpiece
Your videos are so interesting and wholesome. You give off a great vibe! Earned yourself a tennis player’s sub! The level of play is INSANE!
The outside hitter's swing on this play at 9:06 is absolutely insane - a standard out of system choice to go to him but he hit it above the 3-man block and as a 5'6" man I can only dream of doing that
Japan had finesse but Hawaii had scrap. Such a cool matchup
This was a great matchup. Both teams did so well.
Im more impressed by their endurance. With so much fast attacks going on and having to run back and forth to spike, they were something else.
The most dynamic junior volleyball I've ever seen
It is insanely unfortunate high school boys volleyball is not more prominent in the south. Especially with as big as beach is getting down here. Also crazy to watch this in comparison to beach. It's almost not even the same sport.
9:20 Now we wanna hear the story of Adam Morris...
Japan's top high school teams have arguably gotten better since then. Fater pace and quicker sets and even better passing.
HAIKYU SEASON 1 SPOILER WARNING!!!
Something really great is how this reflects Haikyu in that team Japan’s plays started to become easier for y’all to anticipate: just like in season one when Hinata’s attacks were no longer able to surprise and confuse the opposing teams. 19:50 shows how y’all didn’t become faked out by the bic (back row quick/pipe). The block was calm and VERY well executed. Thanks for sharing! Y’all took out the tiny giants!
@@themckibbinbrothers oh! Spoilers! Haha sorry. Hope y’all get to catch up to season 4. Things get HYPE!
I'm Japanese and I'm not good at English, so I used translation. So it may be hard to read ...
After investigating, I found that in 2005, the selected team from Hiroshima Prefecture won the National Sports Festival held every year in Japan.
(In Japan, high school students can play games as selected members of the prefecture only at the National Sports Festival)
So I thought that it was the winning member or the Hiroshima selection of the next lower grade that was in the match.
And I think that many of Hiroshima's selected team members are still the strongest Soutoku (崇徳) high school's players in Hiroshima.
I didn't get much information when I looked it up, so it's just my guess, but I hope it helps.
So it looks like you were playing against their national champion HS team.
Thank you for sharing this with us. This was an awesome story and awesome game!
Super glad you posted this. Was going to ask if it was a possibility in the other video. It's a shame video camera's weren't as good in our younger years, because this really is a great match.
Also, any tips on dealing with shoulder impingement? Been seeing a massage therapist(proper physio one) every 3-4 weeks for the past 2 years, but all it takes is a a few hard games of beach and I'm back to barely being able to lift my arms above my head.
Does your physiotherapist already make you do shoulder external rotation workouts? I think strengthening the rotator cuff (edit: and related back muscles) and learning to activate it while hitting really helps in this regard. Even my technique is poor, but I just wanted to suggest a general area you could target if you aren't already.
For most of us, our hitting arm is also our dominant arm. And if we spend a lot of time at a desk writing, using a mouse, etc., that side gets weak. My physiotherapist already told me that my right (my dominant/hitting side) shoulder blade sits farther away from the centre of my back than my left one even when my arms are completely relaxed. This means that my right rhomboid, and maybe even lower trap, is weak(er). So I try to do rotator cuff exercises regularly.
@@themckibbinbrothers @UVjoint
Thank you both for the quick responses.
I do have a circuit of exercises I perform to try and help strengthen my shoulders, though admittedly over covid here I've been slacking.
Volleyball has started up again and after 3 days of matches in a row, I can no longer lift my right arm to chest height so.. time to start broadening my exercises and approaches to dealing with this.
Thanks!
The sets are so nice dawg
That Haikyuu video was wild just like the match
Wow that was one of the best matches I’ve seen
Looking forward to battling again in 2021!!!
Amazing Haikyuu real match !! I did not expect they would be so good as block as well ! Impressive
Yamaguchi float serve. @12:33.
that setter from japan is absolutely amazing.
Hell yeah can't wait to watch this after watching your haikyuu video!
That number one dude from Japan is nuts, I wonder where he is right now?
That was awesome 😎
the amount of goosebumps and times i said wow in this match.
The spike at 22:44 was so cool that I literally had to rewatch it.
@@themckibbinbrothers Unfortunately no, the one right after by the Japan team, although yours was pretty good too.
Again, just wow 😲
And wish you threw in some more fun trivia 😁😉👊
basically the Japanese plays higher level of volleyball, every chance they get, they have to find a way to decieve the high wall block, on the ohter hand, the Hawaii team, the spikers could easily hit over the Japanese block. which is why i think the Japanese plays better
Okay but they lost🗿obviously a team played better than the other if they lost
@@Josh-sh6oy how? A team can play worse and still get lucky tf 😂
They just ran a faster offense, they didn't play better or harder or anything. The only person that could hit over the Japanese block was one of Hawaii's outsides. Hawaii won because they played better defense and blocking despite Japan's fast offense and they made less errors at the end.
@@esosaobayuwana5994 theres not that much luck involved in a international match between two of the best highschools in each country. Also, again its just common sense that the team that won played better 😐 otherwise you know, they would lose🤦♂️
@@Josh-sh6oy right, but you're acting as if a team cant get lucky and win even if they play worse overall, idc how little luck you think there is in a game of any caliber, theres still luck, tf
Got a question was their any future national team players on this japan team?
He said that he doesn't have any info on the team members.
as their play style and uniform, they might be from the Ohtsuka high school. If they were, probably they did not have any players that joined the NT in the future because most of their starting members were under 180cm...
@@bunnyso553 but this is 2006 maybe they grew in height possibly
Imagine being the red and having to keep a straight face. Lmao 😂
Their plays are so polished it baffles me that they are highschoolers
Punahou has always been a perennial powerhouse and still is to this day. I played OIA back in the 2000s. ILH has always been on the top.
You and Eric killed it.
Lol, Ilama ignoring the whole match and breaking out into a rendition of the Barney song at 15:17
This position. This timing, this angle,...BOOM!!!
These boys proved Haikyuu to be even more realistic, but it's crazy how many do jump serves that age, really incredible
i been waitin for this😁
@@themckibbinbrothers yessir!!😤
One day I'll get my sets to look as crispy as Riley's
i just watched USA vs Iran 0/3
Iran has been killing it tho
Love how you made this video as like a culmination of all your story videos! Very cool seeing it all come together!
@@themckibbinbrothers they were all so good! Yall do a good job of producing vids. . . My favorite might be Rise of the Unrecruited
The defense for that Japanese High school team is at another level 😳 I wish I could’ve had that defensive awareness in high school 😂
At 3:46, 3:50, and 6:45 those were awesome ups 🤯
@@themckibbinbrothers their No# 1 was like Daichi! 😂
Japan did pretty good with having that faster game plays and running more tricky plays
@@themckibbinbrothers but you guys pulled through and still managed to win so good job 👏
Very nice game. Japan is the worlds best in floor defense. This video took 2006 over a decade ago.
game four was fucking wild at the end on god
That dolphin dive tho!! 18:45

I'm so tired of Adam Morris and ALL his drama!
Man, this video makes me want to play so badly again. Sucks that halls are still closed here due to covid :L
can you colab with Erik shoji
While in my school all volleyball matchs were like that first match in haikyuu with hinata's amateur team
*Chef's Kiss*
You ever just watch something and think "yea if I tried that I'd probably die"?
Yea if I tried that I'd probably die.
what a spectacular game !! Sadly, I don't have any video of my years of playing (I still play with 40 years old😉)
@The McKibbin Brothers how old were you when this happened
The height difference is pretty crazy
Can I have the link of full match, pls?
Would be crazy if you battle against a team doing something similar in a 4 vs 4 at the beach. Idk if would work but would be wow. Anyways, this match was intense, two great teams.
@@themckibbinbrothers You guys are the bosses here, hope I can watch you guys playing, greetings from Brazil :))
7:40, 9:54, 16:42, 18:01, 20:03, 20:55, 21:17, 22:28, 24:49
Japan was too stuck on setting to the outside. If they would of spread it more to the opp they would of had you guys. Definitely good part on you for keeping up the pace. Congrats.
That one handed set by Japan to save it from becoming a free ball for y’all at 6:14 was just like the season 1 set where Kageyama sets with one hand for Hinata to get the game point
ua-cam.com/video/-mz_cdXHv7c/v-deo.html
i wish Erik Shoji can react to this
Do you have any tips for me to try and convince my parents to let me do volleyball
But wait....I thought Karasuno had a black jersey..? GREAT MATCH btw
Have you played anybody that was like unstoppable like Ushijima in the anime?
Ushijima's power and height is more western and international style. If you want both power, height, strategy and speed watch Higashiyama play in 2020 and 2019, Ran Takahashi hits at 325cm (average international contact height) and their the other 4 hitters hit at 305cm. Higashiyama, I'd say is way better than the team we just watched. The setter is more consistent on all hitters' max contact in both traditional and unorthodox combos, the libero can run a fast emergency offense. And they have 5 competent hitters who can hit hard and manipulate the block instead of just 2 like this team (11 and 1). Higashiyama defense is also better, the middle make way less mistake even though this team has already make few.
Hello 👋
As a setter, i wish i have those spikers
As a spiker, i wish i had these setters
@@seifeldin. i can be your setter
The reason punahou won is simple. It comes down to the ability to adjust to what the other team is doing. In the last set japan wasn’t able to adjust. Japan was definitely more athletic and much faster but Hawaii’s ability to respond and calmness won them the match.
@@themckibbinbrothers yes, many don’t understand how mental volleyball is. Teams will make small switches to try to throw the other team off. Start placing balls instead of just trying to kill the ball. And it’s the team who can make those adjustments that will win. Height is only one of the many factors in volleyball.
I tried to search up if the Japanese team played in the "Haruko", which is the nationals for high school volleyball in japan, in 2005, 2006, or 2007. I realized from this video that their uniform has only one kanji character, which is their school name, on the left chest. I checked all the schools with only one kanji character that played in the Japanese nationals in 2005, 2006, and 2007 but there was no team with a red jersey or a jersey similar to the one in this video. So I don't think the team in the video played in the nationals back then.
There are many good teams that are not able to play in the nationals because there is a lot of competition(for example Yuji Nishida, who plays for the Japanese national team, couldn't reach the nationals). I'm a Japanese speaker by the way, so I was able to do this search. If the video had a higher quality, I might have been able to read their school name.
This match could have gone any other way any time. It was so neck and neck...
Does anyone know how high the net is in this game?
I think the Japanese highschool team here is most likely Toa Gakuen ( 東亜学園高校) a power house school that has an iconic red uniform
more important question is why the hell is she with adam morris
That´s some real Nekoma stuff on team Japan! :D
what the hell is this, even the background characters are super athletes
japanese players attacks are focused on everything leading up to the attack while american players seem to focus more on the hit itself both effective the high tosses allow the bigger americans to take more time in the air and pick there spots
I just like hearing the girls behind the camera gossip the whole time😅
