I appreciate seeing the highs however I think it’s also good to showcase the lows and normalize it. When we go through challenges it can be so discouraging and can scare us out of things. You were right on point with what you said about the highs and lows when owning a business. I have owned my current business since 2002 and talk about a roller coaster!!! I've gone from 17 employees before the market crash in 2008 to 3 employees immediately after the crash and losing one million dollars a year in revenue. As a business owner you learn to do what it takes to stay afloat in difficult times, enjoy the excitement in the good times and just keep marching forward.
I loved the slow down at the end Heidi! As a fellow entrepreneur, owning a business is the hardest and best thing I've ever done. It's been almost 4 years. Social media makes it easy to think its al rainbows and butterflies but I love your transparency here!
Thats the worst when companies ask you to complete a project for them. I understand you want something more than a resume, but ask for their portfolio of their favourite work. Asking for a project is like asking them to work for free, and how do they know you wont take their ideas and use it as your own. You wouldn't ask a contractor to do a sample deck before paying them to one - you would ask for references or pictures. Just my opinion as I have been through this exact process before.
We don’t ask for something that is very time consuming. We ask them to complete something small to make sure they would be a good fit, see their creativity, and if they care enough to complete that small project since it pushes them to think outside the box. It’s completely voluntary but is a huge part of our hiring process. The reason for this is because we have hired people in the past who over exaggerated their resume and past experience and it’s not fun for anyone. 😅 What they turn in is nothing really we can use because it’s based off of older collections but I understand your point of view! If someone turned in a cool idea that we would actually use for a future collection and they weren’t hired for that position for some reason…we would approach them to pay for that idea. ❤️

Yes!!! We need to see the lows!!! Reading Jamie Kern Lima’s “Believe It” made me realize that while I am passionate about business and still want to own my own…. I DO NOT want to ever be the CEO of a multi-billion dollar brand like It Cosmetics. I am willing to work hard, but not kill myself over my business hard. Seeing what she went through made me realize that if I do own my own company, I want it to be small and enough for me to reach my own personal financial goals for retirement….not be a billionaire. I think women see entrepreneurship or being the CEO of their own company as a black and white “have to have it all and be it all” type thing, when in reality - everyone should have their own personal goals that match what they’re willing to put in or give up (or not put in or not give up time and energy wise), for their business! I really don’t think people realize how hard you have to work to build a successful brand, and it’s important to see that… so important. More of the last bit of this video pleeeeaaasssee!! Love it!! My job I work at my boss is the owner and he's having his lows and having employees come and go and he lives two hours away and has to come down a lot when employees quit and he's been having a hard time with people just yelling at him and blaming him and etc, he's full time with insurance and the business I'm working at and it just seems like a lot for him and feel bad, so yes I would love to see how the lows are running your own business
