I'll never forget the day they added StarTropics to the Virtual Console. I was the same way with the TurboGrafx too! My friend Dylan got Bomberman 93 and it blew our minds that there was a 16-bit console that supported 5 player. The Secret of Mana port also supported 3-player, which at the time we just could not comprehend. Virtual Console was so magical back then.
Back in those days I could barely afford any Wiiware or VC games as a kid. So I'd always be teased by the selection of awesome games. You sound like you had just about everything!
just wait until Larsen or whoever is making the freeshop equivalent for the Wii, then we'll have access to everything hosted on the mariocube repo (which I might've linked in the discord server, I forget)
Matt Kimura Damn son, you fuckin missed out. I saved up my money, asked my parents, and I'd all sorts of this and that to get that Wii Shop points. The best part is that money STAYED there until I did my reasearch on what was worth my money. Here are the ones i remember buying -Paper Mario (ahhhhh, so good) -Cave Story (soooooo good) -Super Mario 64 (The best) -Ace Attorney (ANT DUDE DIDNT EVEN TALK ABOUT MY BABY) -Bit Trip 1 and Runner And the crown jewel of the Wii Shop channel Legend of Zelda Majora Mask (Initiate Witch Climax) I later hacked my Wii and got all the rest for free but maaaan. Thems were to good ol days of Strategizing your Wii points and spending only on the top tier shit. Games that had demo were always given the right of way first, ( Thats what sold me on Cave Story)
One of my favorite features of the Wii VC was of you bought sonic and knuckles and you had sonic 3, 2, or 1 you could virtually connect the cartridges and play S3&K, blue spheres, and knuckles in sonic 2! Good times, good times...
My Wii is unfortunately buried underneath stuff and I can't be bothered to set it up, because I'm lazy. But I am fully aware of what the Wii Shop Channel paved the way for future consoles and it is upsetting to see it go. R.I.P. Our sweet prince.
Man Wii Shop Channel closing just makes me feel sad the Wii is one of my oldest consoles and the Wii Shop channel closing just makes it feel like the Wii is dead
Mkwii64 Bup Benjigoo FINALLY, someone says it. Wow. Its like no one has ever heard of hacking. I did that years ago and I have a torrented a digital copy of the entire Wii Shop channel (30+ gigs). I can just swap in and swap out any game I want in minutes. Plus Wii, GC, and every game Pre-PS2 era on demand.
I would recommend Lit - a puzzle/horror game where you use the wiimote as a flashlight and other tools in order to escape rooms in a school infested with monsters. You can only move in pathes of light and occasionally there is a boss fight.
Thus is the reason why I hate the Games as a Service business model. Even the Digital Distribution model of gaming, I just really hate it as you can't keep a game if your nintendo console is stolen or if the online steam servers close down. There is no guarantee if you can play those same games 10 to 20 years later after release.
TBoneTony My son broke the Wii... Lost all the digital content linked to that system. Its a pretty miserable system Nintendo uses. With Sony I can play the games on any compatible console as long as Sony continues to offer the service. Much better.
Actually... I think it was overrated, I mean, remember how big of a deal it was, and most of it was spending $5 on NES games, which can be emulated for free.
i think you had this confused. the Virtual Console is the overrated thing here with its retro games like the NES games. Wiiware had the kind of games that you wouldn't normally see anywhere else like the Rebirth series of games from Konami, Muscle March, etc. i would love to see more games like that for the Switch, especially when some of these games weren't even made by indie developers at the time. in other words, more smaller downloadable only games from the big developers/publishers such as Bandai Namco, Konami, etc.
Kyle Marchbanks Or even better, you know what I feel like doing while sitting in front of a nice warm fireplace? Watch a quality ad free streaming service called VRV

The Boss Stage1 You're saying that because everything related to Wii and DS will die out by 2019. That would be very coincidental. The Switch won't die out by then since the Wii lasted for 12 and a half years. Switch is very successful and the 3DS family is still going on strong after nearly 7 years.
Fortunately we have the Bit.trip Saga and Collection, some of the WiiWare titles are on the eShop and, well, we still have 1 month to acquire the things. Man, let’s go pick up Pokémon Rumble everyone.
I am incredibly sad that Fast Racing League will be left on the Wii! The much better remake of the Wii U sequel Fast RMX is on switch, but the original will be missed!

I remember That Bonk Series of Games you talk about was a gonna have a Revival called Bonk: Brink of Extinction on Wii Ware, but they Hudson went under.
Great video man. I haven't been on wii ware or even the wii for that matter in like 8 years. Every weekend I bought 2 games. And did that for a long long time. Spent a lot money and time on there and even though it's been 8 years I will miss it now. Thank you for the trip down memory lane!
I remember Muscle March. My school’s video game club even had a tournament on it. That was right after the Octodad Co Op tournament. My school had some very weird competitions.
It upsets me that People made A bunch of Shovelware Titles For Wiiware... The Wii had such titles like MegaMan 9 And 10, Galaxy 1 And 2, Xenoblade, Kirby’s Return Too Dreamland, And more worthwhile Games...It deserved better than a Title like Muscle boys or whatever that last one was called ...
Train #4 You take that back you heathen. "MUSCLE MARCH" was a fun ass game and it was a great time with friends. You cannot even imagine the laughter that ensued.
I love you for this video, bringing back so many memories and games I had forgotten. Now I have to get an emulator so I never forget again. Great vid, imma sub because you are amazing
Wii U Virtual Console may have had better customization, but this is probably the best Virtual Console, if I recall it had much more games than the Wii U's. Goodbye WiiWare, you will be missed. ;(
Platinum Warpstar While I did like the fact that the e-reader levels were added to the VC Release of Super Mario Advance 4, as well as Donkey Kong 64 finally getting a VC Release, I've now grown to despise the Virtual Console for the Wii U and the 3DS to a lesser extent, specifically the North American versions. While the Wii U's VC had some standouts like the aforementioned DK64 and E-Reader levels in SMA4, there weren't any games from the Sega Genesis, Master System or Saturn, nor were there any Square Enix titles like the DS remake of FF3, FF6, (both the faux FF3 SNES version and the GBA version) or even Dragon Quest. The only Square Enix title we got was Final Fantasy Tactics Advance and even _that_ was a joke, since it was the first FFT game that Cloud Strife appears in. The 3DS Virtual Console, being focused mostly on handheld console games, was better... but not much. Along with the old familiar Game Boy and Game Boy Color titles, we actually got Sega Game Gear games, even though there weren't much of those. Plus, we also got surprises like the first Shante game, the Gen 1 and Gen 2 Pokémon games with their connection features intact and the elusive NES/Famicom games, Recca and Mysterious Masamune Castle. Speaking of NES, however... while it was great to have NES classics on the go, the problem with NES games on the 3DS VC was the fact that the ability to get the same game you purchased on the Wii U's VC for your 3DS at no additional fees wasn't considered at all. You'd pretty much spend at most 15 bucks to get Super Mario Bros on both your Wii U and 3DS, if you were *that* kind of person. Plus, it's kinda redundant to have Kirby's Adventure on the 3DS VC when there's already a 3D port of that game. Adding insult to injury, was the lack of any Square Enix title, despite their track record proving very decently on the 3DS with Bravely Default and those rhythm games, resulting in a very mediocre Virtual Console for both 3DS and Wii U... But you you know what really pisses me off about the whole thing? Well... remember when I said "specifically the North America versions"? Well that's because when I looked at the Japanese version of Miiverse when it was still around, not only did I discover to my horror that not only were there Final Fantasy games on the Japanese Virtual Console for both the 3DS and Wii U, but *PC* *Engine* games on the latter console!? *WHAT!?* And yes, I am aware of the Turbo GraFX (which was the PC Engine's name in North America by the way) games that did get released for our Wii U Virtual Console, but it was too little, too late, as people had moved on to the Nintendo Switch by then. The only times we _did_ get Square Enix titles alongside the first party Nintendo titles, were with the NES and SNES minis respectively, and those keep selling out instantly due to people being asshats! Yeah... I take back that "lesser extent" I made earlier as the 3DS VC doesn't get off any easier than the Wii U's VC. Both of them were a joke, even in spite of stuff like Restore points, secret frames for GB, GBC, and DS games, surprising title inclusions and other bits and bobs... Geez, that comment ran *way* longer than it needed to...
Platinum Warpstar It was gonna be a simple paragraph reply... but I had a lot more gripes with Wii U and 3DS Virtual Consoles than I thought and just needed to get it off my chest.
I think 3DS VC is worse. The Wii U virtual console at least have GBA, Nintendo DS and Nintendo 64 games, 3DS only have up to SNES, and it doesn't have many essential SNES games that are available on Wii U (like Super Mario RPG or Yoshi's Island). Maybe I think like that because I'm not a fan of the NES, nor the GB (there are some games that I enjoy form those consoles but less than 10 from each one).
yeah I definitely agree with you there, all of the VC games were already on WiiWare before, but back when the Wii U first released, there WAS no Super Mario 64, there WAS no Super Mario Bros. NES, there WAS no... well there was Super Mario World and F-Zero I think but those were like the two only games at the time compared to the HUNDREDS of VC games on the Wii, and I also hate that you can basically buy VC games that are available for both systems on one console, the Wii U and 3DS CAN connect to each other, why couldn't it have been like a one buy unlimited access deal or something? Honestly what is also a pretty big tease to me is that the GBA games were not on the 3DS, but the Wii U, I hated that decision, and also there was no excuse for "Oh the 3DS couldn't handle GBA emulation." we were shown before that the 3DS can clearly handle GBA games, due to those free games deal WAAAAAAY back in the 3DS's lifetime, I mean, it was cool seeing those games get rereleased for free on 3DS for a limited time, but why couldn't more have come to the 3DS? Oh, and of course, like you mentioned, the Square-Enix & Final Fantasy games being exclusive to Japan, wow. But yeah I did like the save states and the SMA4 E-Reader levels and DK64 release, that was probably the best part about Wii U VC though, unless if you like playing small handheld games on the big screen. Well my reply was an essay as well xD
One of my favorite WiiWare games I remember playing a lot back then was a game called You, Me and the Cube. It was an interesting puzzle game that involved balancing characters on a bunch of cubes without them tilting it too far.
I'm torn. On the one hand, I could buy the titles I want before the service shuts down. On the other, I could just pirate then after the fact, since I modded my Wii.
One of my all time favorites is the Bit.Trip Series. Every single one of those games were classics, they were fun, new, and innovative. I even got in contact with the creators and won a runner-up prize for their art contest. I cannot wait for Runner 3 and to see where it goes from there.
he forgot wario ware diy showcase. it was an 8 dollar expansion with 4 more stages, (wario man, dribble and spitz, kat and ana, and 18 volt) more comics, and more records and you could transfer microgames from the ds to the wii and vice versa.
I would have to disagree with your talk about the Wii U VC not being as good. We finally were able to get games like Mother 1 and Mother 2 plus almost every worthwhile non-Pokémon DS game, a great selection of Wii titles, and some N64 titles. I LOVED the Wii U VC even more than the Wii’s. It’s the best in my humble opinion when compared with Switch and the Wii.
I started watching this video 3 hours ago. Made it exactly 4 minutes and 39 seconds before I paused the video and opened up the Wii Shop on my console. Immediately got lost browsing forgotten titles. Added Wii points, downloaded Paint Splash and proceeded to make some drawings that look like they were done by a 3-year-old. Good times, Wii Shop, good times.
Hush Roll Sadly Cave Story + is a thing...... And Cave Story 3D.... And now Cave Story for Switch. The Wiiware version is my favorite, dont get me wrong. It was the first Offical version, and the one I set my best time for Speedruns. Hell Speedruns on the Wii were the best.
jasonrulesalot. In response to the orginal comment that there really isnt a reason to play the Wiiware version of Cave story. Its been outclassed by Cave Story Plus in content l, Cave Story 3D by portability, and Cave Story + for switch by everything really. There isnt a reason play cave story Wii besides using the wii controller (which feels hella great)
2la84me1 I haven't actually played the game, I wouldn't know how much added content there is in other versions. I just know that if I can, I'll play most games on a CRT instead of a flatscreen, even Ocarina of Time even though the 3ds remake is "better"
It was fun while it lasted... Soon the Wii U will be next because not many people play it now. The same reason why Nintendo Wifi connection for Wii and DS shut down years ago. People can argue all they want but I know this is a fact because I asked the lady who worked at Nintendo via phone call at that time and she said the number of Wii and DS players online "declined rapidly." This will be the same or at least similar reason for the Wii U even though it didn't sell well.
That would be...werid...because like the 3ds, wii u, and switch...my nintendo account is like connect with each other and such :/ i have all 3 connected together so my funds are shared together from all 3 different systems. If they did the same thing like they just did with the wii...were you can only LOOK at games but cant ADD funds (from set date till date closing like explain in the video)...then like...i could just add funds from my 3ds or switch and bam i have money on my wii u. :/ just my opinion on the matter
I loved exploring the shop channel for the last time recently. A lot of dumb fun was had getting games that might not have been worth their price, but I'm still okay with having payed for anyway. I think one feature I loved the most was the imported games available through virtual console, which brought us games like Pulseman and Puyo Puyo 2 available on western markets for the first and to my knowledge only time. Also, I'm glad you talked about good and bad games that most people seem to have forgotten instead of talking about Pokemon Rumble like basically everyone else
You snuck in a reference to Nirvanna the Band The Show at 2:22 those specific games in that specific order. It's definitely a reference to their Update Day video!
Two of my favorite Wiiware games were Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King and My Life as a Dark Lord. My Life as a King being a city management simulator with RPG elements while My Life as a Dark Lord was a literal tower defense game where you added floors to your tower filled with hazards and monsters to fend off waves of adventurers from getting to the top. Both games were a blast to play, with My Life as a King being super relaxing while My Life as a Dark Lord can get super hectic at times. Both definitely get recommendations from me.
Funny thing about Bonsai Barber, if you didn't play the game for a while, the fruits and vegetables would send a letter to your wii menu saying they miss you and you should return. I found out about this like three months after my last play
@Costantino Mottola From my understanding the WiiWare port has exclusive stages not found in the Steam version, not to mention that the WiiWare version let you change gravity at any angle instead of just at 90 degree intervals.
One of the things that i'm most interested in is 2000-2010 gaming, I was born in the mid 2000s, so by the time I was about 6, we were already in the 2010s. Videos like this are the types that i like to watch, but when i watch them i feel like i'm missing out on something big. especially ones about the wii
Can we not let them do this again? I was fine with Miiverse, but the Wii Shop Channel does not feel like a good idea to remove. Well, unless this will only affect the Wii, but something about that still does not feel right.
Man, the Wii's online features were so much fun while it lasted. The first WiiWare games I remember are _And Yet It Moves,_ a really fun physics based indie platformer, and _Fluidity,_ a game where you control water with the Wiimote and solve puzzled and stuff. The Wii still is my favorite console to this day, whether or not it was as powerful as its competitors.
Honestly, Super Smash Bros Brawl is the only Wii game I remember more clearly than muscle march. BTW, I achieved Muscle God, completed the game and got so far in endless mode that I had less than half a second to react to walls.

Great video man. I haven't been on wii ware or even the wii for that matter in like 8 years. Every weekend I bought 2 games. And did that for a long long time. Spent a lot money and time on there and even though it's been 8 years I will miss it now. Thank you for the trip down memory lane!
“And there goes the tennis racket”
Ahhh the Wii 😭
I remember Muscle March. My school’s video game club even had a tournament on it. That was right after the Octodad Co Op tournament. My school had some very weird competitions.
Octodad's Co op really is something.
It's the end of an era. We'll miss you, Wii Shop Channel, and your weird, weird selection of titles.
Tristan Emmons ENJOY YOUR MASSAGE !
Pokepark 2 video when?
.wad is the future for WiiWare
I am so glad you mentioned the BIT.TRIP series! I hold those games very dear to my heart.
If you think the Wii had alot of shovelware, you should see the PS2.
Remember Sturgeon's Law: 90% of everything is crap.
Train #4 You take that back you heathen. "MUSCLE MARCH" was a fun ass game and it was a great time with friends. You cannot even imagine the laughter that ensued.
Muscle march was actualy an amazing and extremely creative game
I mean the level design
I have never seen something like that before
Bless you for telling me about Muscle March before it's too late.
*I was literally playing some games on my wii 5 minutes ago*
StavrosGiGabait I could only imagine that you were yelling at your Wii saying "DON'T LOOK!"
StavrosGiGabait Dude, same. XD
It's legacy and impact will live on just like the consoles before it, right??
Why
Woooah this is like an entire script for a review or something xD
Alright lemme read this
Platinum Warpstar It was gonna be a simple paragraph reply... but I had a lot more gripes with Wii U and 3DS Virtual Consoles than I thought and just needed to get it off my chest.
Bless you for 1. mentioning SBCG4AP and 2. Using Mario Land 2 music for the outro.
But The question is...WILL WE EVER GET A NEW WARIO LAND GAME
Crash Schwarzenegger If only treasure could make a new wario world though
Let’s start a riot
The very concept of Let's Catch is insanely fascinating to me.
Aw man I really wish StrongBad got a complete release for Switch. That would be fantastic.
Voan Siam It's on Steam for cheaper fwiw
*Patrick Tow* Yeah but playing on the computer isn't my thing, a Switch compilation with all the episodes would be fantastic.
*pilgrimsoft* Still wish my PS3 works, it could still play digital games but just doesn't read disc anymore.
"Hey Strong Bad, i have a low polygon count!"
If I’m gonna be honest, I really liked Family Pirate Party. 10:57
Me too!
Before the Wii shop channel is gone I'm buying Rondo of Blood
I find the lack of FAST Racing League in this video highly disturbing.
I never got to play fast racing league because it wasn’t released on the australian store 😭
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King is a game that I spent soooooo many hours playing!
I remember Bit. Trip so much!
Commander Video will never be forgotten
Back when 98% of Nintendo's game lineup wasn't ports
Or remakes.
Their launch wasn’t as remaster ridden than PS4 at least. Still not a good omen for gaming’s future however.
Callinater I mean they were more like dual releases
So you think that games should be left in the dust? I don't think so.
Noah Cg3 If that's all you get from this, that's okay.
Pretty shortsighted, but okay
I started watching this video 3 hours ago. Made it exactly 4 minutes and 39 seconds before I paused the video and opened up the Wii Shop on my console. Immediately got lost browsing forgotten titles. Added Wii points, downloaded Paint Splash and proceeded to make some drawings that look like they were done by a 3-year-old. Good times, Wii Shop, good times.
"There's no reason to buy cave story on the Wii"
If you want to play cave story on a CRT with vibrant colors and no lag, then there is a reason"
Why not
Hush Roll Sadly Cave Story + is a thing......
And Cave Story 3D....
And now Cave Story for Switch.
The Wiiware version is my favorite, dont get me wrong. It was the first Offical version, and the one I set my best time for Speedruns. Hell Speedruns on the Wii were the best.
2la84me1 what do u mean by sadly
jasonrulesalot.
ExciteBots Trick Racing was just really fun for me, I was pretty glad to see it appear in this video
ElectroBlastLuigi You asked the lady.
Yeah, especcially because they stopped production of the Wii U before the switch even released
fucking nice comment solid 8/10
That would be...werid...because like the 3ds, wii u, and switch...my nintendo account is like connect with each other and such :/ i have all 3 connected together so my funds are shared together from all 3 different systems. If they did the same thing like they just did with the wii...were you can only LOOK at games but cant ADD funds (from set date till date closing like explain in the video)...then like...i could just add funds from my 3ds or switch and bam i have money on my wii u. :/ just my opinion on the matter
The number of Wii players declining is bs
"This is a really enlightening experience." (A demo for a game called Liight appears)
I should probably buy all the Konami Rebirth games before it's too late.
“i got into a fight with one of my friends”
“N i c e”
Always a great way to end the day with an antdude upload
The only legit way to buy Sonic The Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles IS GONNA FADE
AhMaJambe! What about the steam release?
Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis collection?
Or are you talking about Sonic 3 & Knuckles as a full game?
AhMaJambe! Sonic Mega Collection and Plus have Sonic 3 and Knuckles
Sonic Classic Collection has it along with Sonic 2 & Knuckles
You're all right '-'
I really like the declaimer. THIS how it is done right IMHO. Thanks for the memories =)
Nintendo fans knows no bounds? WRONG! we know one Bound! EARTHBOUND!
Scott the Woz did an entire chronicles series on the Wii Shop Channel. Wow...
I’m a simple man, I see Quote and I click
I play Cave Story on Sega Genesis. Some guy is porting it and is almost done. I have a flashcart that lets me play ROMs and homebrew on the OG system.
9:46 is that... is that jacksfilms?
JNcubed12 It sure does look like him
You snuck in a reference to Nirvanna the Band The Show at 2:22 those specific games in that specific order. It's definitely a reference to their Update Day video!
2:20 on is a reference to Nirvana The Band The Show The Adventures.
Specifically, "Update Day".
I was browsing the comments to see if somebody was gonna comment on it. Glad I'm not the only one that noticed!
I’ve found my people
I love how tame the smutty games on the Wii were when compared to the full frontal porn games on the switch
Talk about Crash Nitro Kart pls? YOURE THE KIRBY AND THE CRASH GUY REMEMBER?!
I thought Caddicarus was the Crash guy?
Two of my favorite Wiiware games were Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King and My Life as a Dark Lord. My Life as a King being a city management simulator with RPG elements while My Life as a Dark Lord was a literal tower defense game where you added floors to your tower filled with hazards and monsters to fend off waves of adventurers from getting to the top. Both games were a blast to play, with My Life as a King being super relaxing while My Life as a Dark Lord can get super hectic at times. Both definitely get recommendations from me.
Im so damn depressed...I never got to get anything from Wiiware or just the Wii shop in general
Splat Tim Well friend let me introduce you to "Haaaaacking". I did it years ago and Ive never looked back.
The only game i got was super mario rpg xD
I can't believe you referenced Nirvanna the Band the Show's Update Day video. Bless!
Bit Trip was my childhood!
Nothing more to say...
10:01 OH MY GOD! I FORGOT THIS EXISTED!
Yet another part of my childhood, though not as much. It's also not the better game, but much nostalgia.
Funny thing about Bonsai Barber, if you didn't play the game for a while, the fruits and vegetables would send a letter to your wii menu saying they miss you and you should return. I found out about this like three months after my last play
Does anyone remember Yet it Moves? That was an awesome Wii Ware game.
matthew alexander this game was also on Steam but whens Jett Rocket on Steam
TempestMask1000 theres the excuse to save money (i dont belive it) wc24 i understanded because you have to focus on other consoles
You should. It's not easy to keep up a server with millions of people and ALSO a server that nobody uses and is just as expensive.
