Welcome to this week's video! Today I thought I'd do a popular tag -
My Experience at University. However, mine will have a bit of a different spin as I'm now a full time online entrepreneur! Spoiler alert I loved University! But I also want to share with you some tips about lessons learnt, and how I think you should approach the experience. Thank you so much for watching, and of course don't forget to subscribe!

    ❤ FAQs:
    ↣ Are you a full time UA-camr?
I work full time online as a 'Digital Nomad' which means I get to travel the world with my fiance (Ed) and not be tied to living in any specific country. I do Freelance PR, teach courses on Udemy (check out my profile here - www.udemy.com/u/louisecroft/) and of course blogging and UA-cam.
↣ What does Pauper To Princess mean?
My passion is all about living like a fabulous Princess on a little Pauper budget. I visit beautiful countries, and buy fabulous clothes but I'm always looking for a way to save money and be thrifty!
↣ When did you start blogging?
I created my blog in 2012 when I was living in America. I was thrifting so much that I wanted to start sharing my outfits online and inspiring other people to look in charity shops. Now it's become all about my Digital Nomad journey and what it's like to be a female nomad.
    ↣ Where's your accent from?
I'm from the South of England but I currently live out of a suitcase travelling all over the world.
↣ Where is your favourite place in the world?
I fell deeply in love with Gili Air when we visited as a paradise getaway, but Chiang Mai is my favourite place to live. Plus of course, there's no place like home (Dorset in England).

I think it's a pretty common view these days that universities are not fully equipping young people with the knowledge and skills that they need to truly prosper. We hear a lot of employers complaining about this.
I personally graduated a few years ago having completed a web development degree. I feel massively let down by the way the course was run. First year of uni should have been seen as a crucial springboard for moving onto the second, but having to do a generic set of modules did us no justice. I had to do modules like systems analysis, computer architecture and photography - they had no direct relevance to building websites. In fact, only a couple of the modules we did in first year were relevant to building websites. From the off, there was barely (and I mean barely!) any teaching about HTML and CSS - or learning the difference software packages like Dreamweaver. There was very limited tuition (what are tuition fees for?!) and it had the feeling of an Open University degree.
I can only speak from my perspective, but since graduating, I've genuinely come to realise that training sites like Udemy are the way to go if you want to learn web development. Holistically speaking, going to university is just as much about the social life and independent living as it is about academia. But skills-wise, learning from video tutorials has been the best way of acquiring knowledge I've found.

Definitely would NOT have gone to uni if I could have my time again. Or I at least wouldn't have done the degree that I chose to do. I definitely agree that at 17/18 most people are too young to make any big decisions about their future (unless you're dead set on being a doctor/lawyer or something like that). There's definitely too much pressure on those who are ambivalent about their career path to rush and pick something, anything!!

Could not agree. If in doubt I'd definitely recommend people go for broad options that don't limit their future choices. What do you think you would've done instead...? Go straight into Marketing work or something else?

I'm not even doing what I went to school for, I realized overtime that I wanted something that would give me more freedom to do what I want and now I've started my own drop shipping business. I don't have that 9 to 5 mentality. I wish I had started a long time and not gone to college. I thought it was the only way for me, and the pressure my goodness, it is too much. I just want to travel and not have to clock in somewhere and be under someone. The many opportunities to be an entrepreneur and be successful online are amazing. I love this type of hustle!

I am pleased with my university degree too. I definitely have not used it in a traditional sense as I am originally a biologist, but I do use it everyday, and have just started a Masters, which I never had in the plan.

Haha you're such a boffin 😝 I was such a nightmare at uni/education in general. You're lucky to have/have always had that mindset

Yes major boffin!! So thankful it's always suited me, but definitely think it's a "born that way" type of thing so other people shouldn't be pressured to pursue the same path!

Really good video! It was good to hear your views on your University experience.
I feel like I had the same experience! I managed to do 3 placements and other external projects while I was there. Learning presentation skills, essay writing, management skill etc.. I'd say University was the best years of my life :)
I made a video just like this a few months ago actually! :)

Awesome!! Will have to go check out yours :D It's still so rare for universities to offer multiple placements but I am so glad to have found one! Sounds like it served you well too :D

Interesting insight, lots of great practical advice and such a difference to my own experience. I won't bore you with the fine details but being from a forces family by 19 I'd racked up five schools and two colleges, was late getting UCCA and PCAS forms in so went through clearing which meant getting the Daily Telegraph on a specific day which listed various Uni's and courses. An hour on the phone resulted in two offers, the cheapest (no fees) was duly accepted. Three years of abject poverty, living in bedsit accommodation in quite frankly appalling conditions, I worked every single holiday without fail, either labouring on a farm, or warehouse work, and in second and third years during term time I joined the OTC which was great experience but also another wage earner. The course was ok, it was general, and in a pre internet era (class of '94 woo hoo) there isn't a single person I kept touch with for more than a year after graduation. If I were that age now, if I'd have gone to uni it would either have been because of parental pressure and expectation, but there'd be a good chance I'd have found a way to have made a fortune online by now.

Wow - what a journey! Sounds like you definitely paid your dues. Interesting to think what we could've done with a 4/5 year head start instead of going to uni....

A university should teach you the ability to think independently. You also benefit from the generic modules as they broaden your horizon. I work for one of the companies you mentioned in the video and I had an amazing university experience in Edinburgh. Your advice to experience as much as possible while at uni is valuable.

So glad you enjoyed the video! Yes I totally agree that university isn't so much about exactly what you learn, as the skills/mindset/network/experiences. I had a wonderful time!
