This was the last Song Gene recorded on 1. October 1971, only 11 Days before he passed away. This Song shows how beautiful soft Gene sung till the last Day.
Why Haven't I Got This Recording By Gene Vincent my Hero (since the 1950's). I have almost every thing else he recorded. I'll Be 80yrs this Month and he is still my Hero. To me, He was a Balled Singer more than a Rock n' Roll Star.
I too listen to Gene almost every day He is and was loved by so many Fans I truly hope he knows just how much. He and Billy Fury whom Gene knew well and Eddie Cochran, they were the Greatest. A GREAT SOUND IN HEAVEN . Love you Sweet Gene.
The fact that this was Gene's last recorded song sends shivers up my spine. It reminds me of Buddy Holly's last "I guess it doesn't matter anymore", Chuck Willis's "Hang up my rock'n'roll shoes" and Otis Redding's "Dock of the Bay" - extremely moving... And when you think that when Gene got back home from recording this in the UK, Marcie, who is featured in the song, had stripped him of everything he owned and that he died days later at a trailer park as his mother tried to bring him "Home". Rest in peace, beautiful spirit.
This is a very hard to find song by Gene Vincent. Gane was the greatest of the original 50´s Rockers. And nobody present or past can or could perform a ballad as Gene. Youre music will live for ever. Thank ypu Gene for all the lovely music.
TOMBANCROFT : this song was recorded on october, 1st, 1971. On october, 12th Gene left this World for a better Place. He had been divorced (for the fourth time)for less than a year at the time of this recording. But he had also found a new love named Marcia and I think he really loved her and her kids. Gene devoted his version of this song to her, only to find when he came back to the States dying that she was gone with all his money, furniture and guitars. She even took his record player. Sad but true.
Words fail me. Distant drums indeed. He deserved so much more. Thanx yr lovely details. Was greatly dismayed to hear of his passing at the time. With it the era
@@pauljoseph8691 Listening to this tune very much shows Gene spite of what he was feeling inside what you are hearing is a broken man finally coming at peace after years of destructive hell he's endured since the passing of his friend Eddie Cochran that formed a very special friendship. Gene arguably never got over the loss and years of pills and drinking his body literally took a disastrous turn that would catch up to him. In the final six weeks of Gene's life he was starting to find peace within himself which after years of self destruction he was starting to sober of being a better person. it ended abruptly October 12th 1971 while visiting his father he collapsed.
Rest in peace gene we still love you and this for ever we could meet yoi maybe for new fortune and fame and in paradise where thou are thou will be our sheppard i ll remember you in the alambra of bordeaux back in 09 1967 love for ever au revoir mais pas encore a dieu
The genius of Vincent comes out here. Comparing Gene's version with Jim Reeves', I suspect that Gene was singing it from memory, as many words are different and he mixed the lines to his liking, eliminating parts of the original. I'd be interested to know if this session was spontaneous or if he was singing a re-write? Thanks for uploading this great song allowing me to hear it for the first time, otherwise sadly I'd never have heard it...just as it saddens me that I will never hear the songs Buddy Holly would have written had he lived past age 22.. As I listened, I vaguely remembered hearing some of the words back in the 60's, [Mary, merry me], but if the record had been by Gene Vincent, I would have bought it for sure!
+IYoungDaddyO Gimme a break! Compare Gene with Jim Reeve's?! Are you from Mars ore running away from some asylum? Gene IS a rock steady connected to 50's Rock And Roll and the # 6 sets of the Blue Caps (Sept '56 to Mid-Nov 1958) made him, well not the biggest star in US coming to Billboard but he/they sold lots of records, in the 50's, Lots of performances (some of the 'Caps couldn't endure it, too much, too tough, too crazy, booze & pills, and left to get sane) Gene of course continued from early 60's (In Europe, UK, France etc.) until he got home only to die in stomach ulcer - I've read.
This was about Vietnam in the 1960s (original singer Jim Reeves did not live to see how far this war woudl go) but can now be about Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya. When will man learn that war is not the answer?
I havent heard this for time, i was given a copy of it by a guy who looked like acted like in fact could have been uks Gene Vincent thanks Tam cambridge
This can't be compared with the faintest of his Capitol records. The first 3 or 4 were outta this world coming to Rock'n'Roll at that time (and some great smoochers too). They (Gene & Blue Caps) were baaaaad ass, creating some of the best Rock And Roll in the 1950's. Sorry to say but this not the Vincent I knew from the 50's.
The world and the music market had changed between the 50s and early 70s. So it's no surprise Gene changed. What did not change was the high standards he had for his own music which remained through his stylistic changes.

Großartiger, einzigartiger Gene Vincent! RIP! 🕊️

I never cared for this song before but Gene made everything into gold. I love it, thanks silverfox!
Have you not heard the Jim Reeves version ?
And you must remember Gene spent his whole recording and preforming life in AGONY due to his leg injury .On that alone he is a true HERO and LEGEND.
Beautiful!!!!!! Loved all his music.

Merci de partager c'est bon groupe c'est vraiment super et bonne fête de fin d'année j'aime
Belle chanson de Gene on apprécie sa voix exceptionnelle
"Distant Drums" should have been recorded at "The Day The World Turned Blue"-sessions. It´s sad it wasn´t cause it suited Gene so well.
.....between Gene bringing the rockabilly thing to Britan, and blues guys touring, ROCK AND ROLL was perfected........
Very good song
Franz ramos superbe interprétation !. inimitable .

Can anybody say who that is standing between Johnny Kidd and Gene Vincent at 1' 31 '', please ?
Thanks.
...!
Anyone know why Gene changed the name from the original 'Mary' to 'Marcy'?
I'm another who had never heard this before until Silver Fox posted it.
I've read that Gene had a girlfriend named Marcy at the time he rcorded this.
A totally different interpretation to Roy or Reeves better ....?
Wasnt this song in the movie Moana 😆😆😁😄😃🎸
Jk
PS : this track has no drums !!!
sounds a bit buddy holly on this.
