That's what I though! But it didn't matter when I increased powder still sooty with Longshot, what worried me was how noticeably sharp the recoil was compare to Unique and other powder. Going to chronograph and see if anything is out of ordinary. Unique gave me 1086 avg with 4.4gr, CSB1 powder gave me 1056fps (I like it) and low ES of 18 fps only. Going to test other powders mostly I am looking for subsonic load ~1000 fps and good accuracy.

The relative that lives one house over says she can hear it while in her house! but I never got any complains, after all the other neighbor kids would throw firecrackers months after 4th of July that I had to finally tell them to stop. My worst fear is scarring the shit out of mailman or Amazon delivery 😄😄😄
Yes! I am in fact swamped and to make matters worse I broke my lathe chuck.... it cost me $552 to buy a used replacement from eBay which is getting shipped, I just pray it's going to be problem free. Nice idea. Straining the sand would make it easier. Some 1/4" hardware cloth will catch anything bigger than a .22, but 1/8" cloth doesn't work very well if the sand is even a little damp.
That's was my next step, I got to hit the recycle yard and find a strainer / hardware cloth, but I am very glad I dampened the sand, the dust flying earlier was nasty stuff I rather not breath.
im no expert, some chambers are more forgiving than others and some of my lighter loads had more soot due to not enough pressure to create a good brass/chamber seal my buddy's 9mm scorpion has alot of factory brass turn out like that... ??....keep us posted on your progress 👍
This was my though, usually the soot indicator is that there is not enough pressure to seal the chamber so I increased powder from 5.0 to 5.2 and it got way worse! I actually shot with Unique 4.3gr and cases were clean! Was surprised given I read so much how Unique is dirty. Also I should point out with Longshot I felt noticeable recoil increase. Going to chronograph when I get a chance and go down to 4.8. Hodgdon has data for 135 and 145 but not 140. 145 has max load of 4.9gr and seating at 1.150, mine was at 1.130" but 135gr has max of 5.5.
Ok, so here's short update. I've tested at 4.9gr and got 2 cases that were "clean" (minimal soot) and 1 that was sooty, stepped down to 4.8 and got all 3 sooty but less recoil and cases ejected closer. I think I'll load a box with 4.9 and run some through chronograph but I've tried another powder also (CSB-1 Maxam) and got clean cases, it's also shooting very soft so my guess it's not going very fast but I kept upping charge until it started cycling but case is full and it appears like it's starting to compress powder.

Sooty cases? Not enough chamber pressure. Run your charge up..but not over max. I’ve used Unique and a few other like powders.
