    Short, clear concise! Bullets definitely penetrated more boards than I ever woulda thought!

      There are actually researchers who found a way to treat wood so that it was actually very good at stopping bullets without being heavy, and once the technology becomes more available, it may be an economical choice.

      So all I need to do is penetrate 1/2 inch of plywood and hit an apple to know if it’ll defend me? Good to know. If all you have is a .22lr , use it.

    What's funny about that that's like construction grade plywood right? I made a door for a couple out of African mahogany and African mahogany marine grade plywood. I shot that door with 762x39 AK-47 and it was proof. When you build a door you make it like the letter H. You always leave horns on, and then you cut the horns off to the size of the opening of the door. I shot those horns and gave it to the guy to let him know what the what the door it would stop. So basically the density of the wood makes a huge difference. Soft pine goes through hard African mahogany stops.

    • @funbro1
      @funbro1  Рік тому

      Yes, different woods will hold up differently just like different woods will support different loads. That is awesome that your door held up so well, I would be curious how it would hold up to this round.

    I remember when I was a teenager, my dad asked me what tree I thought the 30:06 we had been shooting would not shoot through? I picked a big beech tree about 3 to 4 feet in diameter (not circumference). I thought surely 3 to 4 feet of wood would stop any bullet. We moved back a few yards (we were in the woods far from any human habitation) and he let me shoot the big beech tree square in the middle. The bullet hit the tree dead center and when we walked around to the back, there was an exit hole dead in the center. The ammo we were shooting was surplus black tip armor piercing ammo from WW 2. Later I tested it against concrete reinforced with 1/2 inch steel rebar every 2 inches. The concrete was about 5 inches thick. It went through this also but was stopped by a second layer of the same concrete placed 4 inches behind the first. There we found a perfectly shaped boat-tailed spitzer tungsten steel penetrator about 27 caliber a little over an inch long. There was no trace of the copper jacket. Bullet construction has an even bigger effect on penetration than velocity.

      One little lnown fact about beech trees I have found is as they get bigger they tend to be hollow inside and not show evidence like nost holloed trees.

    Thanks for the video. 😞 Question: what if you took welder's cloth and covered the front and back side of 3/4" plywood with it using fiberglass resin and then shot through it? Would that reinforce the plywood creating a barrier for home safe rooms? Seems the cheap method is 2 sheets of 1/2" plywood and 8" of small, dry, rocks between the cavity. Layering would look like: 1/2" plywood, then 2x4 framing (flat profile) attached to 2x6 boards, then 2x4 framing, then another piece of 1/2" plywood and the entire cavity filled with rocks.

    Would have been nice if you mentioned what guns you used, especially for the 22 lr. Barrel length makes a significant difference on velocity.

    • @funbro1
      @funbro1  4 роки тому +1

      Also would have been nice to tell what kind of powder was used in each casing and how much. But I’m sure there is something else that someone will think of. That and many, many other things make a significant difference on velocity. Thanks for watching.

    Wait. What kind of gun was used? Was it a shorty pistol, or a rifle. I'm focused on the 22s. Have seen a few other videos of 22s going through 1.5" of wood, truck doors, come out the other side and go through multiple water jugs, etc.
    Hard to understand why in your vids the 22s went barely .75 inches or so. I wonder what velocity ratings / brands were used.

    • @funbro1
      @funbro1  6 місяців тому

      The 22 was from a Ruger 10/22. Don’t remember what brand the ammo was but it was nothing special. I’m sure it may penetrate more if something different was used but I doubt that it would make a huge difference. Thanks for sharing.

    Those are silver tips. They have a mild steel core. The hardness is about 120 on the Brendel scale. The black tips are the AP rounds. Also the ones you have look like Bulgarian surplus and is usually 147 grain bullet. Have you pulled a bullet and weighed it? Never heard of surplus being as heavy as you mentioned.

    It would be interesting to sandwich plywood with say 1mm steel. 1mm ain't much vs guns but sandwiching different materials could mean a difference... or not 😂.
    I would love to see if there is difference between 2 layers of plywood (effective against .22s and nothing more) vs 2 layers with 1mm steel plate in between them (plus possibly scaling it further in layers, sandwiching plywood with 1mm steel).
    Or 2 plywoods layers with 1mm steel on the back (and further scaling).
