I love how when the suit is being put on, you can hear a heartbeat. Then before the mask seals, there's nothing. After it seals however, the heartbeat returns. The death of Anakin, and the birth of Darth Vader.
Napalm Blaziken It's actually because he dies, and in the original scene (this one is cut to just show Anakin) Padmé dies, and when she dies, Anakin's heart starts to beat again. That's because Sidious stole Padme's life to give it to Anakin. Lucas confirmed it, I think
Napalm Blaziken But it's a very good interpretation too :)
Santiago Macedo Is it possible to learn this power?
@@mrdylanwintle Not from a Jedi
I can't hear any heartbeat at any moment
the "Where is Padme" line always concerns me because even though Anakin just got the suit on we always see Vader as this massive villain and after everything he will do and has done to that point, just to hear him be concerned is heartbreaking.
+MegaDrainProductions To me, that scene is the MOST powerful scene of all. Because in that particular moment, he lost EVERYTHING he was fighting and reasoning for. How much of a betrayal must it have felt for him, as he found out about Luke Skywalkers existence?
+MegaDrainProductions What, was he not supposed to ask if his pregnant wife who he had choked half to death and left on Mustafar was okay?
+John Balboa I think you misunderstood, just hearing Darth fucking Vader being concerned for another human being hurts because we recognize this voice as being really evil especially with the expanded universe.
MegaDrainProductions Yeah, but sith can be concerned. Jedi such as Anakin have been driven to the dark side in order to save loved ones or to seek revenge for their deaths. This is why it was forbidden for a jedi to fall in love. Vader's love for Padme was the only part of Anakin left in him. The "NOOO" is when Vader starts to reject his former self and is only driven by hate, especially against Obi-Wan. The moment when Anakin dies, this scene was meant to show the tragedy of Anakin. The emperor likely planned it, look at the way he smiles before Vader's "NOOO". He has now completely driven him to the dark side. From this moment on, he's the menacing Darth Vader we know.
+John Balboa But when Vader betrays the Emperor to save Luke, Anakin was somehow reborn.
The fact that Palpatine just smiles to himself knowing that Anakin's life is destroyed and that he will forever unwillingly be his slave.
Yeah that smile is so evil. Only someone like him could find joy in something like this
It’s sith-levels of evil. He _revels_ on inflicting excruciating pain to others and destroying everything/everyone through lies and deception

Star Jedi 951
I'm glad you agree!
So true
DarthWill3 Noooooooooooo!!!
Yeah 4th place isn't bad out of context.
This scene almost brings me to tears. Sidious destroyed Anakin and everything he had. The jedi order is destroyed, Padme is dead, his master is gone, his body is horribly scarred, his mother is also dead, pretty much everything he ever had and loved is gone. This all explains why Vader begins to construct a plan to kill Sidious, hell I bet Vader was filled with hatred every time he even thought about Sidious. And even more hatred every time he called him master
+SuperSix4 I feel like he was emotionally dead and broken until he learned of Luke and Leia.
Spider-Man I would agree with that
+SuperSix4 Well, killing Sidious (or himself) would be useless... that doesn't bring back all the people he loved. Besides, Sidious was a father figure to him.
+Елизавета Самусева but he grew to hate him after all sidious has put him through, all the lies he was told, he realized Palpatine didn't actually have the power to save padme, in fact rumor has is that he had arranged her death(which I think is false) but Vader did want to kill Palpatine and hated him immensely after he learned that padme was dead
+Елизавета Самусева but eventually when he learned Luke was his son he realized he still had a family and could overthrow the emperor like he originally planned
"She was alive. I felt it!" Is this perfect blend of Hayden Christiansen and James Earl Jones reactive vocals.

@@JM-bx2vg I did thought before that the original guy (David Prowse) knew that he was gonna get dubbed therefore making an attempt at sounding menacing would be unnecessary
i like how as soon as he asks about padme, you can see that palpatine shits himself with fear
Or he knew that he was pulling the final straw in Anakin's transformation into Vader, by telling him that he was responsible for Padme's death, ensuring that he would be forever driven by hate, hence why Palpatine smiles afterwards.
I think it was more him pretending to be sad while privately thinking "This is my favorite part" when he gets to seal the deal
@@fisher3317 I think he smiles because of the monstrous Sith lord he just created.
Even in the suit, Vader is immensely powerful and Sidious surely is kinda proud of him for surviving that accident and becoming so powerful.
I think he was more relieved that he didn’t have to tell Anakin he has no clue how to prevent death lol
I remember seeing this in 2005. The audience reaction was unreal. Every one gasped when Vader took his first breath.

I remember we all talked about his voice, probably because it was the first time heard and adapted better since 1983 for most, with modern speakers.

Yeah! The Phantom Menace, not so much, but that's just because of Jar Jar; He is given a smaller role as the prequels progress toward order 66. Hell, in this movie, he doesn't even get a line, he's just a background extra!

Why does everyone hate the "Nooooo" part? I mean he was just told that his love, his one and only, his everything, his life is dead. All of that gone forever. What do you fucking expect him to say? Lmao.
Exactly. The Nooo isn't meant to sound epic or menacing. It's the reaction of a man who has lost everything.
Exactly what I've been saying for 10 years now
A scream or furious release of anger would've been better in my opinion. Then the shot should've panned out so you see the building he is being transformed in, and destruction around it from Vader's anger. I would've liked that better.
+BruskPoetProductions I dont hate it, but I thought his body movement when he screamed it out was a little cheesy. Dropping to his knees or on all fours at the shock of losing his love would have added more dramatic effect to it.
+Kap Bab Given the fact that he just got new knees, he would probably topple over with a face-plant doing it.
Fear leads to anger.
Anger leads to hate.
Hate leads to suffering.

I just realized, after all this years, that Tarkin is present at 4:02, what a shot!
Young tarkin.
I did too notice Tarkin when I'd seen this scene. Peter Cushing is missed 😊
2:09-2:12
It’s the faintest sound ever but anakin does indeed say, “Padme, help me” as the mask is put on. It may take a few listens before you hear ir
Yeah I hear it to
I could never hear it. Until I used my new headphones haha
That's creepy
I noticed it also and I saw a video on it which proves he did try to say something.
woah, never heard that before...
I love the music at 2:27 it is very powerful and full of emotion. It shows us how much Anakin has fallen. From being a selfless teen and child that wished to go back to his homeworld to free all the slaves to becoming a disfigured and hateful person. That lost everything that he loved.
I always get goosebumps when Vader takes his first breath.
While I'm not a huge fan of the prequels overall, this scene is fucking beautiful. What makes it bizarre and haunting is the fact you hear VADER'S voice say things that only Anakin would. It just sounds so odd hearing Vader's voice be scared.
Thats the point mate ,a new hope is roughly 19 years later
Adam LeClerc well after revenge of the with in the long span to episode 4 Vader got smarter and stronger (which doesn't really show much in his rematch fight with obi wan)
A wild old Ben-core appears
The way he says “I felt it” sounds exactly how Anakin would have said it.
It really shows how much of a turning point for his character this was. He was emotionly broken after this, and that's what turned him into the Darth Vader we know from the Original Trilogy. Years of knowing little more than grief, pain, anger, and hate, all of which pertain to the Dark Side.
To think that “in your anger you killed her” may not actually be referring to the force choke but just Vader being on the dark side in general which was almost true. Does anyone agree with this?
I thought about that
Holy shit you might be right. Palpatine might have been playing words right there.
"In your anger, you killed her"
By being in the dark side, padme lost the will to live 0_0
Some believe Palpatine was stealing Padme's life force through her heart break and sadness and putting it in Anakin when he was making him Darth Vader. In the comics, Palpatine said to Vader after he fell on his knees after shouting "no" that Padme left pain for Anakin.
Oh shit, I never thought of it like that. That makes so much sense.
Yes it is because Padma was fine she lost the Will to live literally because of Anakin turning into Vader. Also Obi-Wan and Yoda don’t understand the super advanced technology they have. But it’s also the will that’s why Vader lived as his hatred compounded into ensuring he wouldn’t die as he forced himself to stay alive.
Darth Sidius smiled when Vader screamed out in pain. . IMO he never gave two shits about vader. He was like a recruiter fucking up young boys futures with power and honor talk to build his own army.
fuck boy origins
+Rogelio Rocha He didn't really lie, though. As far as he could have known, she died.
She survived his attack initially, but by the time of that revelation she had already passed.
+Austin James I theorize that Palpatine knew how to manipulate the Midi-chlorians into sucking the life out of Padme and into Vader
+Austin James dah sith
Palpatine literally watched over Vader for 30 years, he cared about Vader. He smiled because he saw that Vader achieved force scream out of his anger. Force scream is when a sith harnesses all of their anger in there scream and destroys everything around them.
3:50 is amazing because it finally links to Prequels to the Original Trilogy and the music is perfect
Yeah I know
The lights around the medical "stretcher" that vader is on at 1:40 resemble the symbol of the galactic empire.
I noticed the Kabbalistic symbolism myself...long ago...
Little things like that are why I love the prequels.
I know the last couple of seconds when Vader and the Emperor are standing together was truly nostalgic for those who grew up with the Original Trilogy!
3:49 I don't know why, but that moment with Tarkin and the sith was one of the best scenes in the trilogy. It kind of made the trilogy for me

"This is how it feels to be Anakin Skywalker. Forever."
-Matt Stover.
The part right before the "nooooo" is the best one.
When he rips off his constraints in anger and sorrow and tries to move around with his new limbs, but his movements are still clunky.
The heartbeat, his non-sith eyes showing its Anakin looking at the mast like WTF, and then "help me padme" with his burnt vocal chords... the detail in this scene is extraordinary
That scene when Vader and Sidious are watching the Death Star construction is one of my all time favorite scenes in the entire Saga.
Darth Vader is a work of art in himself - a sad, broken man whose idealism and selflessness are smothered by cruel reality. My compliments to George Lucas for such a unique personality. When I was a child, learning about Darth Vader was one reason why I reconsidered the black and white perspective of my childhood. In addition to other experiences, Darth Vader was a lesson why life is complicated and why I should understand others' perspectives, not just my own. People could do questionable things for justifiable reasons and vice versa.
The music when Vader is walking towards the window is great. It's a very sad, tragic take on the Jedi Theme transitioning into the Vader Theme.
It always gives me chills hearing Vader/Jones say Padme's name in this movie. Really binds the old with the new.
3:56
I fucking love this part, the music is so heartbreaking, illustrating the end of the Jedis, the Republic, the death of Padme and all, but at the end very powerful, this time illustrating the mightiest Empire taking place very quickly!
4:01 Thus Begins...
*_Rogue One._*
It's events didn't really happen until like 17 years later, but you're right!
Joe Humpston So this was like 20 years before ANH, and according to Rogue One it took them 15 years to build the death star. And the empire was already fully established with new tie fighters and star destroyers. Im thinking way too hard about this, this timeline is fucked.
The events of "The Phantom Menace" took place thirty years before the events of "A New Hope"; the events of "Attack of the Clones" took place ten years after TPM and the events of "Revenge of the Sith" three years after AOTC. Anakin was just 9 in TPM, 19 in AOTC and 22 in ROTS. So, by the time we get to the events of both Rogue One and ANH, Anakin, at that point, Darth Vader of course, would be 39. When ANH was being filmed, David Prowse, the actor who originally played Darth Vader in physical form, was 39. So, there we have ir.
Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"Noooooooo" way me too
Rogue one is the worst prequel in my opinion. Boring until the last 5 min. Darth Vader's costume is horrible, look at his neck in Rogue One. Jyn and her dad have different accents? I didn't get attached to any of the characters. It didn't take any risks at all, It was purely pandering to Star Wars 4-6 fans. Filled with stupid cringeworthy scenes. "Don't choke on your aspirations" Seriously? How so many people like this movie is beyond me. I think Disney has taken steps to delete and avoid criticisms.
4:10 It was at this point when a voice in my head said "The circle is now complete" the hairs on my arms stood up, goosebumps, and a chill coursed my body. this specific scene was so powerful I began tearing up and smiled

“Help me, Padme” or “ Padme, Help me” Listen at 2:08
The way the room crumbles around them and how Vader snaps off his restraints then takes his first heavy steps. A new dark life is created. Frankenstein's Monster suffering in unbearable pain standing right next to his proud creator marveling at his own magnificence.
You still don't have the rank of a Master
The tragedy of Anakin.
I love that even though Anakin has fully joined the dark side and officially completed his transformation into Darth Vader after putting on the suit, the first thing he asks about is Padme which really tells you that there is still a tiny part of his old self inside him cares for someone but when Palaptine tells him that he "killed" her in his anger, it not only cemented the empeor's evil hold over his new apperentice but also showed that whatever was left of Anakin Skywalker was now long gone
George Lucas stated, if not for his injuries, *Anakin (as the Chosen One) would have eventually become twice as strong as the Emperor.* But without his limbs and due to the severity of his injuries: *he's only about 80% of the Emperor's strength,* and the intricacy of his life support system makes advanced techniques like Force Lightning potentially fatal to him. The novelization says he can still feel the Force: but his power is muted, like a composer gone deaf or an artist gone blind.
Whatever people may think of the prequels (I'm not the biggest fan myself), I still remember that moment of absolute silence in the cinema before Vader took his first breath. I get goosebumps even thinking about it.
I grew up with Star Wars and that moment - that moment - will never be equalled. Ever.
Also, I like the 'Nnnoooo!'. I know I'm pretty much alone in this! However I love the symmetry with Luke's 'Nnnnoooo!' (which btw I find far more hilarious), and the Frankenstein trope - Vader freeing himself from the bonds of the operating table and taking those first two heavy steps...
Haters gonna hate but I totally dig it.
loved the nod to Frankenstein via pulling off of the table
+J macho Oh thank Christ someone else gets that! This scene is so maligned but I bloody love it. I'll never forget that moment of silence in the cinema before Vader took his first breath. Still gives me chills.

Glad you feel the same way I do about SW. Am watching the climactic duel between Luke and Vader in III right now. Cinematic perfection.
02:08 Say what you will about the prequels, but that scene alone was worth the money I paid for it at the cinema.
I know
This is more poetic than people actually give credit for.
The first lines Vader (while in his suit) says are about his wife; Padme. And the last lines he (before the mask was taken off) convey are about his son; Luke. Vader thought about his family from the first moment he donned the suit until the last.
2:09 "Padme help me" 😨
I never liked Star Wars too much...but this scene is so EPIC!
I'm glad people are finally coming around to this scene because it's actually pretty important. First of all, his love for Padme is the reason he did all this (also losing faith in the Jedi) so to not ask about her is ridiculous. Second it emphasizes the tragedy in all this. He's lost everything that mattered to him, his mother, being a Jedi, Obi-Wan, Padme, his lack of feeling towards other people and apathy towards his true identity as Anakin is complete. Yes, he became Darth Vader when Palpatine named him so but Anakin was also there. It's how Dooku was also Darth Tyannus. At this point there is no separation between the two. Anakin is truly gone and only Vader is left.
Third, it emphasizes the Anakin-Luke-Padme connection. Both mother and son believe there is still good in him and the last thing Padme said to Anakin was that she loved him and wanted to be with him. Anakin would be truly dead if he allowed Palpatine to kill Padme's child with him.
"She was alive, I felt it!" Love how he sounds saying that.
For the heartbeat. The heartbeat is there. It starts off relatively strong before it weakens, then cuts off entirely after the mask seals and the top of the helmet is placed on him. He breathes and the heartbeat returns. Right after, we see Padme die.
Darth Vader/Anakin Skywalker might be one of the most misunderstood characters of all time. He wasn't evil and hateful, he was angry and heartbroken.
The "no" scream was foreshadowed when Yoda was feeling Anakin's pain after Shmi died. It's right after Qui Gon's calling and before Vader's exhale. Masterpiece of a trilogy.
I like the detail of Sidious remaining perfectly fine while Vader crushes all the droids and machinery in his grief and rage. Good way to demonstrate his mastery of the force.
People are like why did he say NOOOOO. That sucked. But you will never understand the pain of losing the woman you loved with all your heart and soul. It's an indescribable agony

one word...
HISTORICAL!!!
What a peculiar scene...
In the Book of Sith Sidious states his intention to pick up where Plagueis left off and learn how to cheat death, going so far as to say "I will find and train new apprentices, but I will never name a successor."
But we see him here going in search of Vader, seeing him broken and defeated, and bringing him back to be rebuilt. We even see a small caring gesture on Mustafar. It seems so out of character for a Sith.
+Laughing Man Actually, the caring is just hypocritical, for Sidious just needs Vader as the most powerful apprentice possible. That is why he is so chilled as he learns of Darth Vader being still alive. He also has to fulfill the "Order of Two"-principles. Sidious remains as evil as it can get, as he tells Darth Vader of Padme's Death, without even knowing anything sort of.
+Pipp Priss right on. Evil as F**k
I also don't get why he would even save him. He used Anakin to destroy the Jedi and the republic, and if he knew Anakin would likely kill him someday, (as sith do) why not just find a new apprentice?
+Joel Rayburn Because he had an already trained one he could send out as an enforcer. Sidious knew there would be Jedi who survived who would either attack him or attempt to organize a resistance. While Sidious is completely capable of dealing with it, why bother when he can use Vader?
It's that final scene! So raw and powerful, filled with sadness and passion as we see the Deathstar being built with the three main Villains in the same shot assembling the original trilogy... DISNEY will NEVER climb that high to achieve what Lucas achieved with Star Wars
I grew up with the Prequels and my dad showed me the originals when I was young (Hell I even learned how to use a VHS when I was only 2 years old to watch the movies) and hearing James Earl Jones say "Padme" sends chills down my spine.
I just love the sinister tone that starts playing at 04:11. It gives you the feeling that the Jedi are all but deatroyed, The Grand Army of the Republic is now under the command of a powerful sith lord, and the Rise of the Galactic Empire.
2:16 no doubt the best scene in the Star Wars saga
I love the genuine concern you hear when he asks about Padme. You can hear his voice tremble a bit, filled with regret and remorse at what he did.
Us poor kids this movie was traumatizing especially as a kid/young teen. Vader tragic back story 11/10
I love how the Emperor takes two steps back when Vader says "I couldn't have. She was alive, I felt it". Apparently Darth Sidious was kinda afraid of Vader's anger and what it could do (for instance, the short earthquake in the room induced by Vader's absolute anger)
I feel sorry for Anakin :(
And in this moment, he forgot about himself and there have been times of Vader, and only in last minutes of his life, he remembered that he was Anakin.
I love Palpatine. "Something something dark side. Something something darkside."
You can hear him say padme help me right as the mask seals him in his suit. It's heartbreaking to see him go and become Vader cold and calculating.
I love this scene. It is very symbolic of what can happen to ordinary people. They betray everything they know and love and become transformed, masked by their own anger/hatred/despair which then drives them through life.

I agree but when he first breaths in the suit chills man chills
nightwing2016 batsvssupes yeah haha
+Digital West But then they would have to cut out James Earl Jones! haha
+Steve Ceja aha that buttery smooth voice...
+Digital West The entire point after that was to show he was still a person, who had emotions
this will always be a legendary part for all OG star wars fans
0:52 it would have been hilarious if Palpy slipped and rolled into the lava
It would also be hilarious if Anakin rolled into the lava
Something I like doing when watching Vader (movies, series, or comics) is to imagine anakin's expressions under the helmet, and what he would sound like without the suit. Pretty much everytimes he speaks, he'd actually sound like the faint "Help me Padme" right before the helmet is sealed.
