on the used market it's "only" about 1.3k now, because everyone is selling theirs and getting the 20-35. I just wish Fuji thought about this earlier and made this an F2.8 or F3.5 lens

Im not so sure, all my GF lenses need stopping down one stop to get the real 'bite' we want from 100mp so what the point in fast lenses

      it would be significantly weightier.
the best lens for wide medium format is hands down the H 23mm

Thanks Chris, Ive never been that happy with my 23mm performance so its interesting to see this, Ive regarded it as weaker than my GF zooms. I'll make sure its always at 5.6 or smaller after seeing this.

It is a very good lens but surprisingly the GF 20-35mm is actually even sharper 😮👍

I have the 20-35 and have rented the 23mm, and I have to say the 23 knocked it out of the park. Maybe it is sharper but the look of the lens was sooooooo beautiful

Who are you kidding, bad fuji autofocus never hits. See other youtubers telling the truth so better get any brand if you want to get an actual functioning camera

Another great review. I have the GF 20-35 and the 100-200 for my GFX50R. Both of those lenses are internal zoom and focus, perfect for my landscape work. I think of this kit as my digital 4x5. I highly recommend this kit.

Love watching these GF lens reviews roll out... seriously considering the 50R so these are very helpful! Did you record all of these at once while you had the GFX 100II? Would love to see a review of the 35-70 if possible as it can be found for about 400 quid second hand.

Oh excellent choice, beautiful camera. Moved to that from an a7rii, and while I do sometimes miss the size, af, and ibis, not nearly enough to make me reconsider. Realistically all the gf lenses are going to out resolve the 50mp sensor with the exception perhaps of the 100-200 which is probably at home on the 50. Haven't had any issues with the 35-70 either, and as a side note try out the Tamron 35 f1.8 adapted if you can. Turns it into the poor person's Leica q3 lol

Great work. A big fan of your channel! Just bought into the gfx system and very interested in native mount lenses that are either compact or fast. If possible could you consider reviewing the Astrhori 40mm 5.6 and the Mitakon 65 1.4? There are some reviews out there but never any test charts.

I am morbidly curious how photos taken with a f1.4 medium format lens could look like

    • @gavinjenkins899
      @gavinjenkins899 Рік тому +1

The crop factor is 0.79, so it's about 2/3 of a stop bigger. So it would look like... a f/1.2 lens on full frame. On an ACTUAL medium format camera (smallest is traditionally 645 which is twice as much bigger vs full frame than GFS """medium format""" is), it's about 1.5 stops more, so on 645 it would like an f/0.95 or so lens on full frame. On 6x7 big boy medium format, it would look more like 2 stops, so like a f/0.7

Yeah, DOF doesn't actually get THAT much thinner on digital medium format, especially since most lenses for it aren't any faster than f2.8...
To my knowledge, the thinnest DOF you're going to get without either a) shooting macro or b) "cheating" (e.g. stitching multiple shots to increase the effective size of the sensor), is just getting one of those long yet fast primes like the Nikon or Sigma 105mm f1.4 or 135mm f1.8 (Samyang also)... or a 200 f2.0.
When DOF is that thin, it's really all about perceived DOF... which is why longer can help to bring distant backgrounds closer. f1.8 actually has the same DOF whether it's at 20mm or 135mm, so long as the subject keeps the same size on the sensor... but the 135mm will make the background heaps more apparent, so the DOF appears to be thinner (really, the OOF areas are just more obvious).
If you really want thin DOF without spending tens of thousands, I would recommend an f1.4 lens from somewhere, and stitching some shots.

@@photovideomusic DoF doesn't get thinner at all on digital medium format. DoF is determined by the lens and distance to subject, not the size of the image plane. Depth of field has an inverse squared relationship with focal length. So if you double the focal length, your depth of field gets 4x thinner. This is irrespective of all other details including distance to subject and f-stop.
DoF has a squared relationship with distance to subject. If you double your distance to subject, your depth of field gets 4x wider.
"f1.8 actually has the same DOF whether it's at 20mm or 135mm, so long as the subject keeps the same size on the sensor" This is true, but it is true because to keep the image plane size the same for various lenses, you need to change the distance to subject. DoF is proportional to distance^2/focal length^2. If you double the focal length, and you double your distance to subject, this ratio remains a constant, so the DoF remains constant and the subject keeps the same size in the image plane.

Most of these GFX lenses make almost no sense to me. They're all absolutely enormous when compared to their FF equivalents, plus they're pretty spenny. Imagine an 18mm f/2.8 launching at this price point, size and weight for FF, no one would buy it. I get that you want something to resolve your 100mp, but it still seems a bit much to me.
