I love my exotic vet. She doesn't work everyday, but if I have a sick piggy I can email her and she will tell me if I need an appointment or if I can treat the piggy at home. I do have 2 other clinics that have small animal vets.

Excellent video. Short and to the point. Calling a vet right away is probably the best suggestion, something you’ve been advocating for a long time.

I agree totally with what you said here. It's VERY important to call the vet if they are sick.

You always have good informed advice, i always trust you. It doesn't hurt to look something up too, there's so much info online. But yes, in an emergent situation, vets are important. So sweet to see past piggies too 🥰🐹💕

Yes researching is great, just sadly every week I have people thinking I have some magic solution and breaks my heart that people wait around for info that can't fix the problem.

Our adopted piggie had four babies and we got them all used to the idea of Critical Care from day 1 so that in the event that one gets sick they won’t resist hand feeding. It worked and when the male developed heart disease before age 1 we were able to save him that first weekend when he stopped eating on his own. If in that moment he had resisted the Critical Care, he might not have had the strength to last until the proper meds combination relieved the fluid buildup around his heart.

I too think it’s crucial you get to a vet ASAP with guinea pigs especially.... like you said they can go down hill so fast. Also they are considered exotic so it was challenging to find an experienced, qualified vet. We also started looking for vet the day we brought them home. We took them within a few days of getting them just for wellness checkups.

@skinnypigs1 - I have a foster piggy that lost a foot from bumble foot. His previous owner didnt take him to the vet due to losing his job and $. By time we saw and answered his ad for help it was too late. However, we went too the vet hospital cause it was a Saturday afternoon and then our vet a week later. His other foot on the back is black and the vet suggested doing surgery to amputate it so both legs are the same. His leg is healing great where the foot came off. This all happened because the previous owner “THOUGHT” it was ok to wrap his leg up and foot with antibiotic cream. I guess he was just trying to do his best with what funds he had. However, could you PLEASE do a video telling people not to wrap feet or legs with self adhesive tape or medical tape etc. While they may think they are helping what happened in only 7 days was blood flow was restricted and piggy lost his rear foot and maybe both feet. Happy to say he is 85% better. Still on antibiotics and metacam for pain. It is very frustrating also here in the U.S. as only certain vets see small animals. So people should also be prepared ahead of time so they aren’t calling around. Even the first 24 Vet Hospital we called turned us away due to the doctor not being comfortable with small animals or as they say.... EXOTIC animals. It is absolutely ridiculous a vet hospital does not hire all around vets that can help these guys out. So please people do not wrap in anyway your piggys feet or legs and find a vet that is willing to see your piggy in an emergency or for any reason. 8 out of ten vets DO NOT see small animals in the U.S. Thank you for this video and all your other work! Great Information and content! 🙂

They just started seeing them at the vet were I live in the last couple years. I had two guinepigs and I caught Covid and I didn’t think to much about it my guinepigs live beside my bed. I woke up the next day my brownie had die and pudding had a nasal infection and respiratory infection I got him into the vet wishin a couple hours as soon as they’d see him they gave him a bunch of treat ment and I had to give him drugs 2-3 times a day for 7 seven days he’s been great ever since took me 1 month to find him another cage mate by the time I got brownie cremated and stuff I was 2grand deep and they were giving me freebies

Yesss this is so important! ♥ Always calling to your exotic vet first and/or going to emergency vet if situation has already gotten that bad.
And also, some might not think that some "little things" can also require vet visit pretty quickly before they turn to bigger things. For example I had hay in my guinea pigs eye couple weeks ago and it was that bad it was inside the corner of the eye (half of it were outside the eye and half of it were inside!! I never forget when the vet pulled that out since I thought it was only little piece). We couldn't get it out because it was so stuck, also you could tell it was hurting so badly and I couldn't tell if it had done some damage to the eye so I wanted to go check that to our exotic vet during the same day so it get treated immediately and our vet could see if the hay had done some damage. And it had done some damage. Now the eye is fully healed since it got the right treatment. ♥♥♥

    • @skinnypigs1

I have a have a guinea pig boar and I know he needs to go to vet. I have an appointment tomorrow morning I called every vet in my area tomorrow was the first. My question is my boar bear isn't eating I am using the Sherwood recovery food and a couple hours he is eating 3 to 4 syringes of a 3 ml syringe is this enough until tomorrow. If I keep doing this will he be okay until tomorrow.
