No musical song has ever had as visceral an effect on me as Bitch of Living. Like I hear the opening guitar riffs and all of a sudden I am catapulted into a Latin classroom at top speed and I become a sexually repressed German student
Even though I thoroughly respect John Gallagher Jr for being the original Moritz in Spring Awakening, I kind of fell more in love with Gerard Canonico's interpretation of Moritz in this performance. He's so freakin' adorable, just as funny and just as crazy talented
I remember many years ago I wanted my mom to take me to New York to see this. Kind of glad we didn't.. lol. Id love to see it in person as an adult though! Still not with my mom.
One of the few shows I've ever seen that I thought the cast performing was as good as the original cast. Of course, some castmembers are the same, but not all. You can hardly tell. Thank you thank you.
I never thought that you could laugh so much during that play I read the book at school (in German) a few years ago and every single page was just incredibly depressing and somehow disturbing
letsHugElefanten Frank Wedelkind wollte ja auch selbst das sein Stück mit Humor vorgetragen wird. das steht bei mir im Nachwort. Ich glaube das Musical würde ihm gefallen :)
I thought I'd seen every SA posting on UA-cam but somehow I missed these. Never saw Matt Doyle as Otto at the same time Gerard was Moritz. Loved it! The talent was so stellar in the ensemble that no matter who was on for who, it was perfection. Thank you WendlaBergman for your diligence! Much appreciated. :)
@CheyennaNycoleGirl The characters of Wendla's mother, the piano teacher, the female teacher and pretty much every character's mum is played by that one actress (but they are not the same characters). Same goes for the male adult characters. They've purposely done this to reinforce the idea that in children's eyes, all adults are the same. Just like how they use handheld microphones to sort of bring the cliché teenage idea of singing with a toothbrush in front of the mirror to the stage.
Mortiz is such an awkward guy. And his jerky movements that end in awkward poses are awesome. I just who's I knew what the hand in the jacket pocket looked like from another angle.
Thank you for posting this! I didn’t really know about Spring Awakening until watching the reunion concert and I became obsessed! I’ve always wanted to see the whole play and thought I’d be able too.
The Moritz understudy in this video is Gerard Canonico, who's currently a part of the cast of American Idiot on Broadway. He's FIERCE. Thanks for uploading this, I've been looking for Gerard!Moritz for forever!
When they are singing it is like they are in the present day to represent the fact that the struggles that happen are continual no matter what time period, which is why they hold the microphones and are singing rock music
"Calls" doesn't have to mean telephone calls. People used to visit each other in person and if someone wasn't home the visitor would leave a "calling card." "Call" can just mean "visit."
Gerard's okay and all, but I saw Blake Bashoff live in the tour cast, and he was phenomenal. The only Moritz to actually make me cry, Blake was. Adore him!
@HannahRebeccaM That is Matt Doyle. He joined the cast in the summer of 2007 as a swing/Melchior understudy. He was later bumped up to Hanschen but continued to understudy Melchior.
@GPinzie I love her too! I have never seen any time where someone subbed for her. I'm sure she was out sometime, but I don't know when. It's like she did every performance as Thea - from the workshop till the Broadway show closed. She is brilliant! :)
@The29thStreet Yes they are. At Spring Awakening, there were stage seats on both sides (cheaper than out front actually), but a couple of those seats were occupied by cast members - 'chairs of rock' - who joined in on some of the numbers and would freak out some audience members who didn't know they were actually part of the show till they pulled out their mics and started singing & dancing. It was always funny to watch their reactions.
The upper circle is my favorite part, unless I can ger on the first 3 rows in the scroll. Then is just hard to see :p It's also the best part to film because no one sees you cos there's like, no light.
@lossie101 yes i agree with you! the only preformance of John's ive seen was on youtube and he was great cas hes JGJ obvs but i saw gerard as moritz when i saw SA and i fell in love with him. he made me fall so in love with the character and brought me to tears when he died i felt a part of me fall apart. he made me emotionally connect to Moritz. hes truly great
This is on Broadway? It seems small to me, I’ve never been there, but it looks like any other theater in Minneapolis or St. Paul... I’m disappointed lol.
Who's that understudying Martha? PS I also love Gerard. Not going to say he's any better or worse than any other Moritz, but he's every bit as adorable, sweet, awkward, and jittery as a good Moritz should be.
Ive never got the opportunity to see it live because I was ten when it came out even though I begged my mom. But I've fell in love with moritz . And even though John is phenomenal I love this moritz what is his name???
oh my god. i just saw lea michele, johnathan (don't kill me cuz i probably can't spell his name) groff, and JENNIFER FREAKING DAMIANO, all on one stage. i think i just died.
@mcflyrocks26 They're suppose to give a rock concert vibe.... for people who aren't fans of the musical, breaking out into song. I love all musicals, but I do like the concert feel, it's different.
There are two girls with braids in "my junk" so the one on the far left is Jen Damiano playing Martha and I think the one next to Lea ( Wendla ) is Remy Zaken who is playing Thea.
I KNEW SKYLAR ASTIN WAS IN THIS BUT I DIDN'T KNOW HE WAS THE SEXUALLY FRUSTRATED ONE WITH THE CURLER HAIR OMG
they're ALL sexually frustrated lol
jonathan trying not to laugh at moritz putting his hand in his pocket at 13:17 gives me life lmao
why did Moritz do that?
i think he was tryna act all casual aroun melchiors mom as if he was not just talkin about pussy lmao
+Corina Gaya yeah, I figured lol
corina gaya n
They got such amazing singers for this play. Very good casting. One of the best.
ITS A MUSICAL NOT A PLAY
Mairead Brown A musical is a type of play. A play without music is generally referred to as a "straight play".
Hahaha Moritz' reaction after Melchior said "It made an atheist of me" is classic.
Understudy did really well.
does anybody know his name? I like him better as Mortiz
+S Jess Gerard Canonico I'm pretty sure
Gerard Canonico!!!!!!!! Love him
I'm really late but yeah his name is Gerard canonico he's in a bunch of other really good things to he was rich from be more chill
from "my junk" into the essay is the best scene change ever
Jonathan groff can't keep a straight face because the guy who's playing Moritz in this version is HILARIOUS!
When Moritz calls Melchoir "melchy" I cried. How did I not realize this when I watched it the other 5 times?!?!?!?
No musical song has ever had as visceral an effect on me as Bitch of Living. Like I hear the opening guitar riffs and all of a sudden I am catapulted into a Latin classroom at top speed and I become a sexually repressed German student

The use of props are fantastic. The musical is AMAZING!!!!
"It's as if the entire world was mesmerized by penis and vagina!" -Melchior. "I am." -Moritz

Jonathan B sounds so good in The Bitch of Living
+Malia Desirae He sounds so good in everything tbh
oh my god. I'm in love with Gerard as Moritz.
Gerard is such a babe ARGH
Mortiz is such an awkward guy. And his jerky movements that end in awkward poses are awesome. I just who's I knew what the hand in the jacket pocket looked like from another angle.

9:50 SKYLAR FALLING OUT OF THE CHAIR OH MY GOD IM WHEEZING
The one girl that swoons for Moritz is pretty much me.
Exactly how Wedekind would have wanted it ... its tragic yeah, but he thought it's even more touching, if played, childish and innocent :')
i love that they just start jumping in "my junk" :D
Thats the audience.
They have stage seat and also the cast sits with them when they're not on stage.
We're totally doing "My Junk" in my school! xD
Can't wait to see my classmate playing as Hanschen! XD
The Moritz understudy in this video is Gerard Canonico, who's currently a part of the cast of American Idiot on Broadway. He's FIERCE.
Thanks for uploading this, I've been looking for Gerard!Moritz for forever!
13:18 oh my god Jonathan's face xDDDD
watching this in the library, probably not the best idea. oh well, these librarians will just have to deal with the brilliance of this production
I love how they manage the set changes! So creative and unique :-)
AAAAAAAH Doyle as Otto, Jenn as Martha, and Gerard as Moritz. Thank you for this recording!
At 1:47, Otto says "As if she'd return my calls." But did people even call each other in 1890's Germany?
When they are singing it is like they are in the present day to represent the fact that the struggles that happen are continual no matter what time period, which is why they hold the microphones and are singing rock music
"Calls" doesn't have to mean telephone calls. People used to visit each other in person and if someone wasn't home the visitor would leave a "calling card." "Call" can just mean "visit."
I don't know, but I think there were phones and telephone poles in the 1800's in Germany. There were phones in America then.
Marley Kate Well there's also a reference to a stereo in 'My Junk.' The songs are meant to represent the modern generation.
i love how it is like old timey and they pull out mics at every song :)
Bless you for uploading this, I've seen the london performance but I always wanted to see the broadway version
I love Melchior's mom. So. Much.
Gerard's okay and all, but I saw Blake Bashoff live in the tour cast, and he was phenomenal. The only Moritz to actually make me cry, Blake was. Adore him!
Jon Groff steals the show in this one :)
@HannahRebeccaM That is Matt Doyle. He joined the cast in the summer of 2007 as a swing/Melchior understudy. He was later bumped up to Hanschen but continued to understudy Melchior.
I actually love you for uploading this!
@GPinzie I love her too! I have never seen any time where someone subbed for her. I'm sure she was out sometime, but I don't know when. It's like she did every performance as Thea - from the workshop till the Broadway show closed. She is brilliant! :)
OHMYGOD THIS IS AMAZING, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR PUTTING THIS UP!
You did a really good job of fliming this :)
love this show, saw it a few weeks ago and havn't been able to get it out of my head ever since :) anybody know of any other musicals up on youtube?
@The29thStreet Yes they are. At Spring Awakening, there were stage seats on both sides (cheaper than out front actually), but a couple of those seats were occupied by cast members - 'chairs of rock' - who joined in on some of the numbers and would freak out some audience members who didn't know they were actually part of the show till they pulled out their mics and started singing & dancing. It was always funny to watch their reactions.
I love Moritz in the dance breaks :)
I love when they start to stomp! It makes me want to get up and stomp too.
haha at 13:18 you can see Johanthan Groff crack up. :-) it looks like he's trying to keep himself together there
I wish this version was the one with John Gallagher Jr. HES THE BEST
When they talk they sound like cute little english boys, but when they start singing they sound like american punk stars
The upper circle is my favorite part, unless I can ger on the first 3 rows in the scroll. Then is just hard to see :p It's also the best part to film because no one sees you cos there's like, no light.
Who monologues while trying to get off?
@rapidreadr73 omg you have no idea how grateful i am for this! thank you so much! i have always wanted to see jenn as martha
OHHH MATT DOYLE!!!! I love him!
@lossie101 yes i agree with you! the only preformance of John's ive seen was on youtube and he was great cas hes JGJ obvs but i saw gerard as moritz when i saw SA and i fell in love with him. he made me fall so in love with the character and brought me to tears when he died i felt a part of me fall apart. he made me emotionally connect to Moritz. hes truly great
Wait, are there audience members sat on the stage? If so, that's pretty damn awesome. Interesting choice. :')
I sang My Junk for an audition once.... fun to sing the entire song solo
i think i agree...oddly enough haha there's something about him that i like a little bit better than john gallagher jr. is he in anything else?
This is on Broadway? It seems small to me, I’ve never been there, but it looks like any other theater in Minneapolis or St. Paul... I’m disappointed lol.
Who's that understudying Martha?
PS I also love Gerard. Not going to say he's any better or worse than any other Moritz, but he's every bit as adorable, sweet, awkward, and jittery as a good Moritz should be.
Ive never got the opportunity to see it live because I was ten when it came out even though I begged my mom. But I've fell in love with moritz . And even though John is phenomenal I love this moritz what is his name???
i fucking love this!!!
Gerard is the PERFECT Moritz
Omg who ever is playing Mortiz is SOOOO Hot!!! So much better than the original. Love this SEXY Mortiz!!!!!!
YES! :)
oh my god. i just saw lea michele, johnathan (don't kill me cuz i probably can't spell his name) groff, and JENNIFER FREAKING DAMIANO, all on one stage.
i think i just died.
Frodo lookalike teaches a tiny angry man what love is
@mcflyrocks26 They're suppose to give a rock concert vibe.... for people who aren't fans of the musical, breaking out into song. I love all musicals, but I do like the concert feel, it's different.
Um... That's Sara from sorority wars. Cool, I didn't know she sung. :)
He's pretty good for an understudy. He's no John Gallager Jr, but still good.
when jonny b wright sings **shivers**
skylar astin :')
man i wanna be in this show soo bad
I fucking knew it was Gerard hell yeah
NATALIE GOODMANNN!!!!!
The one that is in love with his piano teacher
I love Lea Michele and Jonathan Groff!! :D
Is this what Rich meant when he said he was a loser in freshman year
I feel like towards the end of My Junk, nobody is watching Skylar. They really should be!
There are two girls with braids in "my junk" so the one on the far left is Jen Damiano playing Martha and I think the one next to Lea ( Wendla ) is Remy Zaken who is playing Thea.
Oh my gosh that first song 😂😶
@ThruAcceptingRules yeah she plays Martha a lot of people are out on this production.
What time period is this suppose to be in?
@TheBluefairy93 Only the best musical ever made!
The one with the two giant curls on top of his head..with the glasses
this is perfect
@gchimmel yeah. I do like John Gallager Jr has Mortiz since he originated but Gerard is still pretty damn good.
@verriefunnie
Full agreement. I can ignore the writing and watch the musical. That is all that matters.
@littlecoconutinc its the style of the show, its suppose to be like a concert feel
hahahaha just realized tht the dude in the back is motorboating tht chick lmfao!
The first time I saw this I was 11. And my mom was with me. -___-
who is Moritz? I love his voice
Gerard Canonico
@Zaninth11 The Moritz in this video is Gerard Canonico lol not John Gallagher jr.
Hope that helps! xD
Who plays Moritz in this recording? Because they're interviewing a very different actor in all the interviews =S
Who plays Anna here? Looks familiar!
@Jobrosforeverandever Thank you! :)
I love Moritz
Johnathon Groff
look at baby jen damiano
@verriefunnie You are very welcome :)
