Nine years ago, I started a lemon tree from seed. Is this finally gonna be the year at fruits and Flowers? Let's talk about. It's. Let's take it back nine years. It's 2014. Plant fanatics didn't exist yet. The American Fig company didn't exist. I didn't even know I liked plants back then. I decided, for some strange reason, I was going to start a lemon tree from seed. And I did. I looked up a video and I can't remember whose video exactly it was. I'll have to look that up. But they were showing how to do the paper towel method of starting seedlings. And I put a little lemon seed into that paper towel. It sprouted. And nine years later, you are looking at what started everything. My love of plants, the American Fig Company, Plant Fanatics, all of it came because of this lemon tree right here. And for those of you who don't know, we actually just built this greenhouse. It's pretty massive. And in the years prior to this, I had to bring this lemon tree either into my garage or I had to bring it into our first greenhouse that we built, which was only ten foot by twelve foot, and it had like six and a half foot ceilings. So obviously I had to chop this thing back like hardcore in order to fit it in those locations. So it's lived a very rough life. And because of that, it hasn't fruited and flowered yet. However, now that it's in its new location and it can really spread its wings, I do believe that this year is going to be the year that it's going to fruit and flower. Now, when I say that this tree's life was rough, I mean it. I hacked it back so many times. I mean, if you look in here closely, you can see all of the times that I've had to cut it back severely. And not only that, but at one point in time when this thing was in the garage, I didn't have any heat in the garage. And we're on the line of zones six and seven, so it can get pretty cold, it can get below zero here. And it was in the garage and it got really cold and it completely defoliated. There was nothing left on this thing. And I thought it was dead. I thought it was a goner and it was only a few years old at that point. But to my surprise, in the spring, it fully recovered. And so I now know that this lemon tree is relatively cold hardy, which makes me even more excited to have it. Now, I believe that the lemon that I took the seed from was a Lisbon lemon. I'm not 100% certain of that. And this could be a little bit different variation depending on where that lemon came from. If there was cross pollination that took place, I just don't know what the fruit is going to be like on this. However, I didn't do it for that reason. I did it because the tree means a lot to me and I'm dedicated to growing this thing, whether it fruits or not, it's going to continue to have its place, because, like I said, this is what started everything. Now, over the years, I have put this lemon tree into a bigger pot, but I found that it kind of got rough to carry it back and forth because that's what I was doing all the time, was constantly going back and forth every year, and it was just getting heavier and heavier. So what I decided to do instead and make my life a little easier is on multiple occasions, as this tree has gotten root bound, which it's done many times, it's not grafted onto a flying dragon root stalk or anything. It's on its own roots. It wants to be a full size tree. So what I've done is I'll pop it out of this container, which I'll make a video on for those of you who are interested in this subject. And I root prune it, I take the roots back pretty significantly, which would scare most people. They probably think their tree would die. However, every time I've done root pruning on this tree, it has responded extremely well and it pushes out tons of growth. Everything looks happier and healthier about it. So root pruning is not a bad thing if it's done correctly. And like I said, I'll make a video about that in the future, so stay tuned for that. But the point is, if you're growing a citrus tree from Seed and it's going to turn into a big tree. Now, if you're growing maybe like a Meyer lemon from seed, and it's coming somewhat true to seed, it tends to be bushier. But this is definitely not a Meyer lemon. It's turning out to be a real tree. I mean, this thing would be tall if I let it go to its own devices.

Nice. This plant is the reason I started following your channel, Chad. I started my lemons from seed in November 2018 so they're 5 years old now. I started an avocado tree at the same time and it's about the same size as your lemon. I don't care it ever fruits, I just love the tree.

Thank you! There’s so many people interested in the subject, and too many of the seasoned growers who discourage those who wish to grow things from seed. Without seedlings, there would never be any new varieties. It would be the same plants everyday with no movement forward. Everyone has different passions and desires. So these videos are for those who wish to go against the grain and grow seedlings. 😀

Can't wait for the update. My love for plants started pretty much the same. Or at least grew stronger in this same way..

Your story reminds me of a little of my own. However, I got my seeds from my mom traveling to Vietnam and brought back a whole lime fruit for me. Anyway, that was a very long time ago. After probably 4 years I got fruits and every year thereafter. Good luck with yours.

What I did with my greenhouse was I put in 4-in a.d.s pipe two and a half feet down for geothermal I didn't think that was deep enough so I thought two holes five and a half feet down and ran solid 3 in all the way down and up to connect them to the existing. Then I filled it up with stone and found these great Rubbermaid cylindrical trash cans about three and a half feet tall by 2 ft wide. I popped holes through them implanted my Meyer lemon in one and my navel orange in the other. I plan on doing that two more times putting other citrus in ground for the winter. I'm going to put rope handles on each of them. That way I can pull them out in the summer.

I planted seeds from a Meyer lemon last winter and ended up with 6 seedlings. One, I planted outside (an experiment), one I up-potted, the other 4 I still have in their red solo cups. The up-potted one is 2 feet tall currently. So jealous of your greenhouse!

You should do low stress training with the branches drill holes in the pot and us wire or string to pull it down 👍

I really think that is a good idea and I have started the same thing with my lemon in a 5 gallon bucket with holes drilled all through it my lemon tree is only a year-and-a-half and it is already about 4 ft tall and a trunk diameter of abt an inch and a half I remember seeing a posting that it's all about node count before the citrus tree start to bloom so I started pulling down on the main branch and I got six new branches popping then the other two branches started catching up and I will be bending them down. I also heard that it releases a hormone to fruit quicker I really think this is the key.

I've even given 1 of the smaller, 8 yr old trees to my brother, we planted it in his yard this yr, his house is a south facing wall 4 feet from it to block the chill/frost. I pray it works, I hear lime is the least hearty of the citrus.. I'll update u on the frost situation and it's survival this winter in central Al.

I started a mandarin from seed 3 years ago. I'm in zone 7 so every time I bring it in for winter it eventually loses most of it leaves added a grow light but didn't seem to help . It does bounce back when I put it outside but really I don't think it will ever fruit. Looking forward to the root pruning it will probably help
