2018 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 GTS Car Review

- It’s a classic. And starting at around $122,000 a bit of a bargain. How’s that possible when the Porsche 911 GTS costs $15,000 more than the Carrera S model? Because it gives buyers $22,000 worth of kit. It’s like Black Friday every day of the year. Tom Voelk drives the 911 Carrera 4 GTS model.

About Tom:
Tom Voelk is an award-winning automotive contributor to The New York Times. His podcast was the first to win an Emmy Award. He also married way out of his league. Now, stop reading this promotional copy bragging about Tom's photography and editing skills and watch a couple episodes. It's much more interesting.
Wasup Tom. Amazing video. I owned a Cayman S & was totally satisfied & iin love as you were. Unfortunately, I sat in a 911. Then I drove one. I looked at my Cayman S & shed a tear. I had to divorce her for my 911 4S. It's not the 4GTS I wish I had, but your video personally hit home with me in more ways than one.
I'll take one of these because unlike most super cars today, this one still gives you a option for a stick.
Thanks for your hard work Tom. I really enjoy watching your car reviews!
I would trade-in my mother-in-law for this car anytime
Bong Lim ..is she good looking? Lol
Excellent review as always, Tom!
Great review! Love your videos
I have to say i bought this month and the automatic gear box is awesome
Well i hope you can have one too. Cheers Mr.Tom 👏🏼
Interesting to see people bashing Alcantara interior. I think it's beautifully elegant and refined but also sporty and racey at the same time. I love the "Natural Leather" option as well but Porsche only offers it in 2 colors.
Starting at 122000 usd? Here in Portugal is 50000 usd more (at today’s exchange rate). It’s infuriating and outrageous! PS - I love your writing and your videos. Greetings from... you guessed it... Portugal!
Beautiful car! My favorite other than the Turbo. Can't wait for you to review the upcoming 911 T with the 370 HP base engine.
this guy has a perfect voice!! Very nice to listen to. He speaks very well also, he should get a Porsche GT3
I own the GTS and you don’t need the lift kit I’ve never once scraped the front end.
I have a 2018 GTS without the lift as well. No problems after 750 miles but I live in a very flat area. I was just in California and I thought it might be useful there.
See Tom smile... 👍🏻
Great review! Love your shoes
Amazing review, Mr. Tom Völk
good reviev but better will be with automatic gearbox in my pov anyway this car is my target now .THX Tom Voelk
Good review thanks from the UK
my dream car... black rims, blood red body and interiors.
At 3:14 it looked like you were going to bounce out of the car. lol
Joe Egan bruh i came here just to write that 😂😂😂😂😂 good job.
Yes, I thought so too!
The GTS lacks like 200 HP from the Portofino and that one is also a cabriolet. Not to mention that Ferrari is also more upmarket than Porsche.
More realistic competitors would be the SVR, GT-S or an R8.
I’ve noticed... I haven’t seen you try a Porsche 911, Boxster or Cayman with the PDK. (Or have I missed a couple reviews with the PDK).
The Turbo S had the PDK. Just luck of the draw with press cars. Personally, I would buy the PDK in a heartbeat.

Question answered.
great video !! and massive detail.. thank you for putting this together. I enjoy watching your channel Nick, and am a fan. I have a 2019 991.2 GTS Cabriolet in Chalk. with about 42k. in options. sticker 171k. would you like to do a video with my 911?!!
Who the hell is nick
This guy named is tom voelk
Tom, I know you liked the seats, but the driver's seat seemed to move around quite a bit, almost bouncing. Did you notice that at all or am I seeing things?
Everything was moving around a bit. That was a bad patch of road with frost heaves and potholes.
So, do you actually buy all them TP's for your review or just borrow them from your local costco?
Can you please review the new Land Rover Discovery? Really want your take on it...!
Sorry, I don't think it will happen anytime soon. My next LR will probably be the Velar.
I wonder how noticeable or unnoticable the turbo lag is on these 2018's. Some say it's barely noticeable. And is not abrupt. No sudden hit of power. Fairly gradual. Like a naturally aspirated 911 (GT3). Porsche should bring back another "more affordable" naturally aspirated 911. Maybe positioned about the Carrera T.
I picked up my 911 4 GTS in mid March, just in time for the Portuguese government to keep the population in their houses, so it has sat in the garage for the most part. Oh well, it will keep for more normal times, if they ever return. Looks great in the garage.
I've driven in Portugal once LOVED it. Here's to normal days.
@@DrivenCarReviews It's a challenge but I love it too. It is said that things like speed limits are merely suggestions. In fact 20 kph over the 120 limit is okay, but I love the twisty roads best, especially down the mountain from Sintra to Cascais. You're right about the GTS bargain aspect since I configured a 911S with the kit on my car, and it came to >200,000 euros including massive taxes.
Tom - Was this GTS in Dolomite Silver or GT Silver?
It was 3 years and 150 cars ago. Don’t remember. Also, video is a very poor way of judging paint. You really need to find an example in person and see if you like it.
Hi Tom, Some drivers report dual-clutch gearboxes aren’t as smooth during low-speed town driving as their makers claim them to be. So is that right? Have you had any previous experience?
I understand that Ford has had some issues with that, especially in the Focus. The times I've had a Porsche PDK I've had little to complain about.
Driven Car Reviews Thanks for replying, I always follow your reviews, keep your great work up!
Yes it does happen occasionally. I have a VW GTI with the DSG. You might experience a small amount of clunkiness in stop and go traffic or in a parking lot, but 99.9% of the time a dual clutch is fantastic. I would never buy a performance car without one!
I have a 991.1 carrera s and yes, the pdk is a little bit sluggish when driven slow. But when driven spirited it is a wonderful gear box. Faster the gear turns faster the gear engages.
What Colour is it?
whats pete carrol doing here
At 3:13, it looked like you were in a bouncy castle.
I really like what Porsche is doing this cars are amazing but, still a miata can do many of the things this one does for a lot less, but the interior does look great
There's that chestnut "it's more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow" and as a Miata owner, I can say that's the truth. In everyday driving on public roads, especially the city, the Mazda is a joy to drive. But out where you can push a car, the Porsche is another dimension. If only I had the disposable income...
So you'd be happy to take a pistol to a gun fight while the bad guys are using assault rifles. Good for you.
yeah I guess it has more with the amount of zeros in your bank account than the amount of horses in the car
Life is always about never having enough, what's new? I think it's safe to assume that the majority of Porche owners have the disposable income for expensive toys. If you were a multi-millionaire, I think your tune would change quite quickly.
bongmistt you dont have to be a multi millionaire to be able to afford a porsche
"Lateral grip in corners is per killian". I can't understand what you mean, would you explain that?
Lateral grip is Herculean.
TVNYT oh my! Hehehe 😂😂😂 Thanks bro! 👍👍👍
I’d have mine WITHOUT rear steering and WITHOUT front end lift
The reviewer is so likeable #nohomo

Where do I send my $911 to?
Well, I suppose the folks in Puerto Rico need it more than me right now. On top of it, you'd get a tax credit. Thanks for thinking of me!
take a shot every time he goes between 3rd and 4th
And more valuable than an Ivy league education...
PDK- no way! Manual- don't care if it's slower. It's about involvement.....old school.
67tomcat if I was getting a rwd gts then yes manual but for the 4wd I'd get the PDK
He is bouncing like crazy lol
turbo charged or NA?
Alex Hong NA
Isaiah Martinez it's a 991.2 911 so turbo
Jaikar Chatha oh yeah i forgot they switched all 911s to non NA. Sorry not much into Porsche
Isaiah Martinez no your good and not all the gt3, gt3 touring and gt3 rs are all naturally aspirated
Hey @Tesla. Model S,3,X review by Tom is a must.
Ha! Just try getting a car from Tesla, especially the 3. I doubt it will happen.
this thing is HOT.
Love that car! And I'm glad Porsche brought back the manual transmission.
ZL1 1LE would destroy this
There is no android auto as no android peasants could afford this Porsche
always, AWD
Might as well just buy gt3
r56mini umm the gt3 is like 30k more expensive. Sure they have the money but this will be better for daily driving
GTS is much more usable as a road car or daily driver.
I find Android Auto an odd omission. I guess all Porsche drivers have iPhones lol
There are other cars who leave out Apple so Porsche isn't alone here. But yeah, in this day and age both phones should be supported.
Great review..."Yeshua/Jesus is the way"
Tom, have many people noted that you speech inflect like Stephen Colbert, especially with the long "s" sounds?
Or is it just me??
That's a new one on me. The normal comment is that I look like either Pete Carrol or Anderson Cooper.
Better than Carol Burnett or Alice Cooper, I suppose. Have you considered dying your hair blue? You could say you play sax for Green Day
I'm a keyboard player, no sax for me.
57 PEOPLE AGAINST POSCHE ARE DRIVING THE CRAPS AMERICAN CARS BOOOOOO
the car is fast but fucking bland tbh
The amount of alcantara inside and black wheels is so cringy
Fortunately for you there are options to change it.
Joe Black - I think the opposite. I like the black wheels but hate the alcantara. Disgusting material!
I'm not a huge fan of alcantara, but I don't mid it and I absolutely love the black wheels, although I'd probably get the Carerra S wheels in black because the center lock wheels would make it much more difficult and costly to have 2 sets of wheels/tires for summer/winter. In any case, I think the GTS looks much sportier than other 911 trims and that's a good thing, it should have a meaner look. But this kind of stuff is entirely based on individual preferences. There is no right or wrong look for a car. It's all in the eye of the beholder.
Black wheels are extremely douchey.
+omg I love it when people state their preferences/opinions as though they're some sort of verifiable facts. It's just your personal preference dude, nothing more, so there's no need to get 'douchey' about it.
cant even finish the video after watching the Singer....seem disingenuous and sterile after Singer. smh
First
And well deserved
